A Note From the Editor The month of September brought a frequent, and quite interesting, visitor to the beautiful white sands of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach - the moon jellyfish (pictured below). On our late afternoon walk we encountered hundreds of washed up jellyfish ranging in size, from saucer to dinner plate, and enticing beach goers to pause, investigate and snap photos. These jellyfish are, in fact, visually amazing with their slightly opaque, gelatinous flesh and pink lining. It’s no wonder this is the jellyfish depicted and set into motion in dozens of Spongebob Squarepants animated episodes. Marine life art and photography is certainly my favorite genre. Our area provides a wide variety of subjects that may be interpreted in any medium. I’ve had the pleasure of viewing many blue crab in oils, acrylics, glass, wood carvings and beadwork, just to name a few. Local and regional artists are sure to find their muse along our coast. The 42nd Annual National Shrimp Festival provides the perfect opportunity to lay eyes upon beautiful, one-of-a-kind local, regional art specific to the Alabama Gulf Coast. Approximately 200 booths of arts and crafts will be on display and available for purchase during the course of this four-day event, rendering hours of entertainment for the art enthusiast. The Shrimp Festival will also feature over 80 hours of musical entertainment, a showcase of the culinary arts with 50 vendors offering up culinary favorites and new dishes for sampling, the annual sand sculpture contest, 10K and 5K races, the all-new Outdoor World, Shrimp Festival “Idol”, and a relocated activity area specifically designed for children. Don’t miss out on this amazing attraction October 1013, you’re sure to find something for everyone! Be blessed, Audrey Chambers Editor

Homemade Baby Wipe Ingredients: Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Ingredients1 300x225 Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe Easy and Inexpensive! •1 roll of heavy duty paper towels (Note: I use Bounty for wipes. I don’t use them in my kitchen, but cheap paper towels do not work for wipes… I’ve tried) •Rubbermaid #6 or #8 container- (Old wipes containers, plastic shoe box containers, old plastic coffee containers or empty gallon plastic ice cream buckets also work. ) •1 3/4 cups boiled water (or distilled)-cooled but still warm – (can just use regular water if you use them in less than a week like we do) •1 Tablespoon of pure aloe vera- check the ingredients •1 Tablespoon of pure Witch Hazel Extract •2 Tablespoons of Liquid Castille Soap (I use Dr. Bronner’s) •10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract or 2 capsules of Vitamin E (optional) •1 Tablespoon of Olive or Almond Oil (optional) •Essential Oils of choice (optional- I use 6 drops each of orange and lavender)
How to Make Homemade Natural Baby Wipes Homemade paper towel baby wipes 300x225 Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe Easy and Inexpensive! 1.Cut the roll of paper towels in half using a sharp knife 2.If using a plastic shoe box or old wipe container, accordion fold the wipes into the container. If using a Rubbermaid #6 container (I highly recommend), place the wipes, cut side down in container. 3.In bowl or quart size jar mix the water, aloe, witch hazel, castille soap, GSE/ Vitamin E and oil and stir. 4.Add essential oils if desired and stir. 5.Pour over paper towels in container and let absorb- this takes about 5-10 minutes. 6.Flip the container over to make sure wipes are well soaked. 7.If using Rubbermaid container, pull the cardboard roll out from the inside This should also pull the innermost wipe out and start them for you. Depending on the brand of paper towels you use, you might have to experiment with the amount of water to get the right amount. 8.Use as you would regular wipes, and smile, knowing you are not causing your beautiful child any future health problems! 9.Note: If your child has extremely sensitive skin, you may need to leave out the essential oils or use calendula or chamomile.

Reusable Homemade Wipes If you like the disposable wipes you make, you can make reusable ones also. Just cut up old receiving blankets and t-shirts into 8×8 squares. fold them into old wipes containers and pour the same mixture (above) onto them or spray on each wipe with a spray bottle before using. These are an even cheaper option, and I am working on using these all the time. This has been one of my most fun homemade discoveries. These wipes are definitely kid approved. Every time I change the baby, the older two hover around the wipes to smell them, and usually try to steal one, which they use to clean things. (Guess I’ve instilled this a little too well). We inadvertently discovered that these wipes also clean tile, counters, leather, and flooring well, but they leave residue on stainless steel.

ew i v e R k o o B “Kindred and Wings” by Philippa Ballantine Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Centuries ago, the Valaeri race on the world of Cahaero was nearly wiped out by a genocidal ruler. Talyn, a displaced and desperate Valaeri survivor, accepted a life of exile and hatred to became the ruler’s pet assassin. After 300 years of butchery, she thought she was deadened to all emotion ... until she met Finn, and had to cast
him away. Finn himself is finding out that he’s not the simple orphan bard he always thought he was, and is much more vital to this world’s future than he ever could have imagined. Now he is on a journey to locate his captive brother and uncover his own buried past, but he can’t seem to forget about Talyn. Theirs are but two of the paths soon to converge in a momentous confrontation that will become the stuff of legend, when long-buried secrets of past and present come together to not only reveal the truth of that terrible day long ago, but also to prevent an even worse catastrophe from destroying them all. Ballantine has a talent for subtle world building. Rather than dumping all the elaborate backstory at once, she reveals it piece by piece in ways that feel organic and natural. And this is truly an excitingly unusual world. Gods and monsters walk Cahaero and the spaces around it, manipulating mortal and immortal residents alike for their own hidden purposes. Uncertainty and chaos lie in the very bones of the constantly changing earth, but they are to be welcomed and celebrated as much as feared. “Kindred and Wings” continues the epic tale begun in “Hunter and Fox,” which together make a compelling, imaginative fantasy duet. This satisfying sequel puts a period to one chapter of this world’s history, while leaving the door open for new adventures.
