A Note From the Editor In the midst of some recent business challenges and tribulations I found myself firmly planted in a chair, frustrated and emotional. I began to pick apart all of the aspects of the overwhelming problems at hand and eventually reverted to identifying the things and people for which I was thankful and grateful. Although “thankful” and “grateful” are often used interchangeably, there is a slight difference in definition. Thankful is defined as feeling or expressing gratitude, being appreciative. The definition of grateful is warmly or deeply appreciative of kindness or benefits received, being thankful. Although they are both adjectives, thankful is typically applied to “things” while grateful refers to “people” and their actions. After processing these thoughts I was quick to shake off my earlier frustrations by simply picking up my own work. As I leafed through the pages I realized that I held in my hands dozens of reasons to abandon my own self-pity and be thankful and grateful for the following customers that enrich my life on a regular basis: I am grateful for a barber who, when giving my son his usual buzz cut, gives him a temporary Mohawk or old man cut just for laughs. I am thankful for the fresh seafood-filled cooler that is carried out to my car each time I visit, no matter how busy the seafood market is that day. I am thankful for snug eyeglass frames, after the screws are tightened free of charge by my favorite optician. I am grateful for a pedicurist who gives special attention and care to my “bummed up” big toe. I am thankful for freshly cut grass every Monday and for landscapers that treat my outdoor items with care. Thanksgiving Day is a reminder on the calendar that we should pause and be thankful for the blessings in which we receive and, when you surround yourself with wonderful people, it is an easy task. Some days life feels like a swift kick in the gut and others leave you standing in awe, wondering how you could ever be worthy of so many blessings. I like to start my daily gratitude with the three amazing humans that live under my roof, for when all else fails we can absorb ourselves in one another and be perfectly grateful. Be blessed, Audrey Chambers Editor

Ever wonder how you’ll get years of tarnish off a flea market find? Here is a method that should help make it a bit easier, less time consuming, and uses less polish. You will need the following supplies. Silver cleaning supplies Aluminum foil, baking soda, stainless tongs, rubber gloves, large stainless or enamel pot, water, 4”deep aluminum roasting pan, clean soft 100% cotton cloths, eye protection, wooden spoon, measuring cup and a well ventilated area. We will show you two (2) methods. One for cleaning small and flat items such as serving pieces, small trays and flatware using a 4” deep aluminum roasting pan (see below) For either method: Work in a well ventilated area. First, wash your silver items in warm water with a mild detergent such as Ivory dish soap. Washing first, sometimes removes a bit of the tarnish. In any case, we have found items washed first seem to clean up faster than those that weren’t Working in a well ventilated area boil some water in a kettle or large pot. While your waiting for the water to boil place the aluminum pan in a stainless steel sink, sprinkle a light but even layer of baking soda on the bottom of the pan; Place the items into the pan, put on your gloves and eye protection. After the water has boiled gently pour it over items in the pan until they are completely submerged into the water, sprinkle just a tiny bit more baking soda into the water. You should see the water produce a bubbling effect and you will smell the chemical reaction; like rotten eggs. Wait a few minutes (3-4) then lift the items from the water using tongs; gently dry with the soft cloth. If the item is clean enough, wash again with a mild detergent, dry immediately, and enjoy. If most of the tarnish has been removed but, the item needs some just a bit more cleaning use some silver polish according to the manufacturer’s directions. Note: If you have a porcelain sink you should do this outside since the chemical reaction could potentially harm the surface of the porcelain.) Method 2 for taller items: We used this method for cleaning sugar bowls, creamers, and 4” tall candle sticks. Wrap the item in aluminum foil, making sure the foil has direct contact with the item in at least 2-3 places. Make a few slits or punch a few holes in the foil to allow the liquid to flow in between the item and the foil. Set the foil wrapped items aside. Place a stainless or enamel pot on the stove. Place the foil wrapped items in the pot. Fill the pot with enough water so that the items are completely submerged. We used some glass pebbles to weight down creamers and sugar bowls. If the water rises too close to the top when the items are completely submerged

2

use a deeper pot. Turn on the stove and heat the water until it’s hot, then pour approximately 1/4 to 1/3 cup of baking soda into the water, turn down the flame and let the items simmer for about 10 minutes. If you would like to check the progress put on your gloves and remove an item from the pot with the tongs. If it needs more time re-wrap in the foil and place back in the pot with the tongs and add another sprinkle of baking soda. Once a total of 15-20 minutes has passed the items should be done. Carefully remove them from the pot. They may look sort of milky. We were completely alarmed at this, see photo on right. Gently wash in warm water with a mild detergent and then dry with a soft cloth. If the item doesn’t shine up, use some silver polish. This sounds like a lot of work, it really isn’t and sure cuts down on the overall polishing time. We do not recommend this for heirloom items or those extra special pieces.

Just For Fun! Monthly Horoscope

You reserve the right to change your mind when it comes to matters close to your heart. You have to accept that you are being led to believe that you are entitled to recognize how your needs change and what you believed to be suitable or appropriate is sometimes no longer so. It also works the other way around. You have the right to pursue a plan of action you probably vowed you’d never pursue. That was then, this is now. By doing so, you are addressing your most important need. You would not be able to get second chances to make first impressions during the month ahead. As quick as people are to make instant assessments of you, you ought to tread carefully in this time period. It’s likely you’re being watched or monitored by a person or organization you’re keen to impress. Trust that, where you might believe you didn’t meet certain expectations the first time, an opportunity to set the record straight and impress them will present itself. Some luxury items would be purchased for the house for this month. But it would burn a big hole in your pocket!! The present planetary positions for the month ahead have vey special plans just formulated for you. A boost to your finances will help facilitate the pursuit of a creative opportunity you’ve been unable to give much consideration toward of late. Where things romantic are concerned, there does appear to be a need to alleviate tension between you and a certain person. Get some time to show others what you are capable of doing. Soon, where love, money and creativity are concerned, you really will have something to smile about. There’s a difference between being efficient and effective for this month. If efficient you would be all day involved with paper shuffling and list making. If effective you would be able to demonstrate to others what true, indisputable progress you have made. It’s time to assess where you’re giving effort and accepting results that fall short of those you’d like to be seeing. It might be time to turn up the gas and pursue a certain plan with a bit more vigour and determination. You probably sense pursuit of a particular plan is far from over. In the same way some fish refuse to let go once they’ve sunk their teeth into something, you too are not ready to throw in the proverbial towel or accept defeat where something is concerned. Where you’ve experienced rejection from one source, another option is likely to present itself. Be bold enough to ask for what is due for you. This is more a period of reckoning than listening for your Pisces. One by one, your list of confusing and uncertain things is becoming smaller and smaller, particularly for this month ahead. In more than one area of your world, it’s finally becoming clear where you stand. Pieces of information are coming together to help form a much clear-

8

er picture now than was the case even a matter of weeks ago. A few developments will require brave acceptance on your part but the overall picture now is one of long awaited clarity and reassurance.

predictability. A more interesting but challenging option involves swallowing pride and taking a brave step to ring a change or two. It’s the latter option that might be proving to be irresistible for now.

The sky speaks clearly about sensible and productive allocation of your very valuable time for the month ahead. Your list of duties and obligations has increased lately and is likely to increase for a little while longer till around the end of the month. An out-of-the-blue development would probably help your spirits to soar high up in the air. Trust that, despite your waking hours being accounted for, there are several people who want to lend a hand. Be willing to accept whatever help is offered now for this month.

During this month you need to understand no matter how hard you act on a certain thing only that which is destined to happen shall materialize. Might this attitude be one you’re considering now. You could be thinking along unnecessarily excessive lines to make something happen. Trust that a pleasing development will occur with a much more sensible and minimal approach.

A balance needs to be met now between what brings you pleasure and what you don’t want to do. Be aware that, once pleasure has been had, you’ll still have to face something that doesn’t inspire or motivate you. Although it won’t go away, you have absolutely no reason to fear it and once confronted, the issue will disappear permanently. This is the time when new things come into your life. It would be a new house or a new assignment in your workplace. Make sure that you get the best one for now. You can probably easily identify a repetitive and tedious situation that you know, in your heart of hearts, is going to continue repeating itself unless you take initiative to change it. An easy option involves leaving it as it is and accepting what comfort is available through

This month there would be a mixture of something sweet and something bitter in your life. You’re aware now of something that could cause discomfort but are ignoring a likely way alleviating it. Take advantage of help that is being provided for the time being. The month brings favourable results in your study area. Health needs to be tackled with caution and beware of skin ailments that might haunt you for quite sometime during the course of this month. Leos possess unique leadership qualities. You can, with little effort, receive support and admiration from others during the course of the month. This presents you with the need to recognize the influence you can have and you’re being looked toward now for leadership and answers. At least one person believes you can provide both in a particular area. If you’re willing to accept the challenge, then you will benefit personally in several ways through doing so.

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November. Thanksgiving at Plymouth In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers—an assortment of religious separatists seeking a new home where they could freely practice their faith and other individuals lured by the promise of prosperity and land ownership in the New World. After a treacherous and uncomfortable crossing that lasted 66 days, they dropped anchor near the tip of Cape Cod, far north of their intended destination at the mouth of the Hudson River. One month later, the Mayflower crossed Massachusetts Bay, where the Pilgrims, as they are now commonly known, began the work of establishing a village at Plymouth. Throughout that first brutal winter, most of the colonists remained on board the ship, where they suffered from exposure, scurvy and outbreaks of contagious disease. Only half of the Mayflower’s original passengers and crew lived to see their first New England spring. In March, the remaining settlers moved ashore, where they received an astonishing visit from an Abenaki Indian who greeted them in English. Several days later, he returned with another Native American, Squanto, a member of the Pawtuxet tribe who had been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping to London and returning to his homeland on an exploratory expedition. Squanto taught the Pilgrims, weakened by malnutrition and illness, how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, catch fish in the rivers and avoid poisonous plants. He also helped the settlers forge an alliance with the Wampanoag, a local tribe, which would endure for more than 50 years and tragically remains one of the sole examples of harmony between European colonists and Native Americans.

In November 1621, after the Pilgrims’ first corn harvest proved successful, Governor William Bradford organized a celebratory feast and invited a group of the fledgling colony’s Native American allies, including the Wampanoag chief Massasoit. Now remembered as American’s “first Thanksgiving”—although the Pilgrims themselves may not have used the term at the time—the festival lasted for three days. While no record exists of the historic banquet’s exact menu, the Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote in his journal that Governor Bradford sent four men on a “fowling” mission in preparation for the event, and that the Wampanoag guests arrived bearing five deer. Historians have suggested that many of the dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods. Because the Pilgrims had no oven and the Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall of 1621, the meal did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts, which have become a hallmark of contemporary celebrations.

Thanksgiving Becomes an Official Holiday Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well. During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress designated one or more days of thanksgiving a year, and in 1789 George Washington issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation by the national government of the United States; in it, he called upon Americans to express their gratitude for the happy conclusion to

the country’s war of independence and the successful ratification of the U.S. Constitution. His successors John Adams and James Madison also designated days of thanks during their presidencies.

ing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate.

In 1817, New York became the first of several states to officially adopt an annual Thanksgiving holiday; each celebrated it on a different day, however, and the American South remained largely unfamiliar with the tradition. In 1827, the noted magazine editor and prolific writer Sarah Josepha Hale—author, among countless other things, of the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”—launched a campaign to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. For 36 years, she published numerous editorials and sent scores of letters to governors, senators, presidents and other politicians. Abraham Lincoln finally heeded her request in 1863, at the height of the Civil War, in a proclamation entreating all Americans to ask God to “commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife” and to “heal the wounds of the nation.” He scheduled Thanksgiving for the final Thursday in November, and it was celebrated on that day every year until 1939, when Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week in an attempt to spur retail sales during the Great Depression. Roosevelt’s plan, known derisively as Franksgiving, was met with passionate opposition, and in 1941 the president reluctantly signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

Parades have also become an integral part of the holiday in cities and towns across the United States. Presented by Macy’s department store since 1924, New York City’s Thanksgiving Day parade is the largest and most famous, attracting some 2 to 3 million spectators along its 2.5-mile route and drawing an enormous television audience. It typically features marching bands, performers, elaborate floats conveying various celebrities and giant balloons shaped like cartoon characters.

Thanksgiving Traditions In many American households, the Thanksgiving celebration has lost much of its original religious significance; instead, it now centers on cooking and sharing a bountiful meal with family and friends. Turkey, a Thanksgiving staple so ubiquitous it has become all but synonymous with the holiday, may or may not have been on offer when the Pilgrims hosted the inaugural feast in 1621. Today, however, nearly 90 percent of Americans eat the bird—whether roasted, baked or deep-fried—on Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Other traditional foods include stuff-

14

Beginning in the mid-20th century and perhaps even earlier, the president of the United States has “pardoned” one or two Thanksgiving turkeys each year, sparing the birds from slaughter and sending them to a farm for retirement. A number of U.S. governors also perform the annual turkey pardoning ritual. Thanksgiving Controversies For some scholars, the jury is still out on whether the feast at Plymouth really constituted the first Thanksgiving in the United States. Indeed, historians have recorded other ceremonies of thanks among European settlers in North America that predate the Pilgrims’ celebration. In 1565, for instance, the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilé invited members of the local Timucua tribe to a dinner in St. Augustine, Florida, after holding a mass to thank God for his crew’s safe arrival. On December 4, 1619, when 38 British settlers reached a site known as Berkeley Hundred on the banks of Virginia’s James River, they read a proclamation designating the date as “a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.” Some Native Americans and others take issue with how the Thanksgiving story is presented to the American public, and especially to schoolchildren. In their view, the traditional narrative paints a deceptively sunny portrait of relations between the Pilgrims and the

Wampanoag people, masking the long and bloody history of conflict between Native Americans and European settlers that resulted in the deaths of millions. Since 1970, protesters have gathered on the day designated as Thanksgiving at the top of Cole’s Hill, which overlooks Plymouth Rock, to commemorate a “National Day of Mourning.” Similar events are held in other parts of the country. Thanksgiving’s Ancient Origins Although the American concept of Thanksgiving developed in the colonies of New England, its roots can be traced back to the other side of the Atlantic. Both the Separatists who came over on the Mayflower and the Puritans who arrived soon after brought with them a tradition of providential holidays—days of fasting during difficult or pivotal moments and days of feasting and celebration to thank God in times of plenty. As an annual celebration of the harvest and its bounty, moreover, Thanksgiving falls under a category of festivals that spans cultures, continents and millennia. In ancient times, the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans feasted and paid tribute to their gods after the fall harvest. Thanksgiving also bears a resemblance to the ancient Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Finally, historians have noted that Native Americans had a rich tradition of commemorating the fall harvest with feasting and merrymaking long before Europeans set foot on their shores.

Grilled Crawfish with Spicy Tarragon Butter Ingredients 5 pounds live crawfish (Select or True Select) Kosher salt 3 sticks unsalted butter, slightly softened 1/4 cup hot sauce, such as Tabasco 1/4 cup chopped fresh tarragon 1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder Freshly ground black pepper Directions Cook’s Note: Select designates 12 to 15 crawfish per pound; True Select designates 12 crawfish or less per pound. Add the crawfish to a large pot of salted boiling water. Cook for about 30 seconds. Shock the crawfish in a bowl filled with ice water. Cut through the shell on the belly side the entire length of the crawfish. This will help the meat cook evenly. Remove the vein along the body as well as the sack behind the eyes. Rinse thoroughly. Combine the butter, hot sauce, tarragon and cayenne in a food processor. Process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Prepare a charcoal grill for direct grilling. Place the crawfish in a grill basket and grill until the shell turns bright red and the meat is opaque, about 5 minutes, shaking the grill basket occasionally. Meanwhile, melt the spicy tarragon butter in a saucepan or skillet. Remove the crawfish to a large platter or shallow bowl, season with salt and pepper and drizzle with the melted butter. Serve immediately. Total Time: 30 min ~ Prep: 25 min Cook: 5 min ~ Yield: 6 servings

ew i v e R k o o B “Fangirl” by Rainbow Rowell Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Cath is more than a little anxious about starting college. It’s hard living apart from her twin sister, Wren, for the first time ever, and even harder when Wren seems so excited about it. Everyone around Cath seems to be confident and capable, from her intimidating roommate to all the fellow English majors whose cool sophistication

she feels hard-pressed to emulate. So Cath retreats to the safe haven of her imagination. She’s an ardent devotee of the Simon Snow book and movie series (a thinly veiled riff on Harry Potter), and over the past few years her fanfiction set in that world has amassed an avid following of its own. But as school assignments and outside stresses begin to crowd her time, even that beloved escape begins to feel like yet another hungry maw demanding constant attention. Meanwhile, academic setbacks are making her question if she’s on the right track. She worries about Wren, whose drinking binges are reaching a troubling frequency. She worries about her dad, whose bipolar tendencies she fears will take over now that he’s on his own. And she worries about Levi, her roommate’s boyfriend, whose reassuring friendliness and heart-twisting smile is becoming more precious to her than she can admit. Cath is a great character, just as introverted, awkward and nerdy as she is intelligent and witty, more used to navigating imagined worlds than actual ones. Refreshingly, these traits are not derided and suppressed, but refined and even celebrated over the course of this coming-of-age tale. Yes, Cath will come to realize that real life can hold its own magic -- but, reassuringly, she doesn’t gain this at the expense of her imaginary adventures, but rather by learning to find the right balance of both.
