TIDBITS® BRINGS YOU MORE UNUSUAL WORDS, Part 2
by Kathy Wolfe This week, Tidbits continues with its lexiphanicism — showing off with big words! It’s time to learn more about these whatchamacallits and thingamajigs. • Those who love cats are ailurophilists, while those who love dogs are cynophilists. People who love all animals are referred to as philotherialists. • Misogamists and misopedists often go hand in hand. They hate marriage and children, respectively. Gamophobists don’t hate marriage; they’re just afraid of it. • Stop, thief! Look at the wide variety of terms used to describe these crooks — brigand, snaffler, kirkbuzzer, efter, ladrone or footpad. The snaffler is mainly a horse thief, while the kirkbuzzer robs only churches. The efter steals from theater customers while the performance is on, and ladrones and footpads are muggers who thieve while on foot. A specialized pickpocket who targets only churchgoers is referred to as an autem diver. • The Latin suffix “-aster” refers to anything with a lesser status,

One of the worst, in my opinion, is the cellphone. Make sure you clean it regularly by wiping front and back surfaces with a soft cloth dampened with alcohol. We touch our phones with our hands, and press them into our faces. It’s just smart to keep them clean.” -- W.D. in Indiana ¥ Grilling season is in full swing. A great way to clean the grill surface is by using a wad of aluminum foil. It can be pressed into the grate to get all the gunk off, both before or after grilling.

251-923-6278 jtcompanies.net Age Has Its Rewards Now that summer is here and we’re all out and about more often, we need to find ways to cut our expenses. There are discounts available in more places than you’d suspect. Asking for discounts locally can be a bit difficult if you’ve never done it. No one wants to stand in a checkout line talking with a cashier about your age while others are waiting, but I’ve discovered the easiest way to get started: Make a list of all the places you generally go: grocery stores, retail shops, theaters, restaurants, hair salons, bookstores and anywhere else. Call them all up and ask whether they offer a senior discount. Ask what the specific discount age is, because some places use 55, or 60, or 62 or
Jambalaya Sausage Kebabs This bayou blast offers up smoky, savory flavor -- stacked with kielbasa, veggies and Cajun-spiced rice. Precooked sausage helps you get the meal on the table in about 30 minutes. 8 (12-inch) wooden skewers or 4 long metal skewers 2 small (about 6 ounces each) zucchini, cut diagonally into 3/4-inch-thick slices 1 red pepper, cut into 1 1/4-inch pieces 1/2 small Vidalia onion, cut into 4 wedges, keeping wedges intact 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 1 package (16 ounces) light kielbasa or other fully cooked smoked sausage, cut diagonally into 1-inch chunks 1 large stalk celery, chopped 1 package (8.8 ounces) white rice, fully cooked 1 medium tomato, chopped 2 tablespoons water 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. Meanwhile, soak wooden skewers in water 15 minutes. 2. In large bowl, toss zucchini, pepper, onion, 1 tablespoon oil, and 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning. Alternately thread vegetables and kielbasa onto skewers. 3. Place skewers on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until kielbasa browns and vegetables are tender-crisp, turning skewers occasionally. Remove skewers to platter; keep warm. 4. In nonstick 10-inch skillet, heat remaining 1 teaspoon oil over medium heat. Add celery and remaining 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning. Cook, covered, 5 minutes or until celery softens, stirring occasionally. Stir in rice, tomato and water. Cover and cook 3 minutes or until rice is hot. Serve rice with kebabs. ¥ Each serving without rice: About 320 calories, 18g protein, 9g carbohydrate, 26g total fat (8g saturated), 2g fiber, 76mg cholesterol, 1,160mg sodium. ¥ Each serving rice: About 85 calories, 2g protein, 17g carbohydrate, 1g total fat (0g saturated), 1g fiber, 0mg cholesterol, 150mg sodium.
even 65. Ask if there are any restrictions. For example, grocery stores often limit the senior discounts to one day a week. Movie theaters might give the discount only during matinees on certain days of the week. Once you have your list of places that offer a senior discount and know what to expect, you’ll be more willing to ask for it. If you’re about to travel, ask about discounts for various modes of transport, as well as for rental cars and motels. If you’re a member of AARP, the opportunities widen. Go online to discounts.aarp.org and click through the offerings. You’ll find shopping, dining, entertainment, home, technology, travel and more. Be sure to click on Local and put in your ZIP code for offers near you. Fifty percent discounts aren’t out of the ordinary. Once you start using the discounts you’ve earned, be sure to ask everywhere. You’ve earned them!

The theologaster is a shallow theologian who has no deep spiritual thinking. • Pregnant women often have to endure allotriophagy, that craving for strange foods. Hopefully, they will choose items that are salutiferous, meaning conducive to health or wellbeing. • If you shilly-shally, dodder, quail, haw, demur or shrink before making a decision, you merely hesitate. Let’s say you’re diffident, gelid, reticent, chary or delitescent — you’re considered rather reserved. Now if someone calls you a miscreant, wastral, garmin, reprobate or varlet, consider yourself insulted. You’ve been labeled a scoundrel! • What do the words coquelicot, tilleul, smaragdine and smalt have in common? They are all names for different colors! Coquelicot is a brilliant poppy red; tilleul is a yellowish-green color; smaragdine is emerald green; and smalt is a deep blue. Speaking of colors, there is an actual name for those who fear the color purple — porphyrophobia. • Good words come in small packages! To aby means to make amends or atone for an offense. A wen is an enormously congested city. To soften something by soaking is to ret it. That broad sash we see wrapped around a kimono is an obi. And kir is a drink composed of black currant syrup and white wine. • Don’t confuse philalethists with philatelists. The former are lovers of truth, while the latter love collecting postage stamps. • How about that really boring person you meet at a party who has absolutely no conversational skills? This dull dude is a macrologist, and he frequently engages in battology — wearisome redundancy and trifling talk. He’s enough to give you a bad case of drapetomania, that uncontrollable urge to run away! • Some folks are famous for mentimutation — the act of changing their minds. Some might actually have hypobulia, which is an inability to come to a decision. • Do you have big feet? You’re sciapodous! How about great big ears? You’re macrotous! Maybe buck teeth, too? You’re a gubbertush! Is there a noticeable gap between those buck teeth? That’s called a diastema. Let’s add a buccula to the mix; that’s a double chin. • Everyone knows a breedbate, an individual who seems to enjoy starting arguments and stirring up controversy. Breedbates are occasionally suggilated — beaten black and blue! And how about that lazy loafer you know? He’s a drotchel, scobberlotcher, ragabash, lobcock, lollard or sluggard. • Over the baize and into the side pocket! Baize is the green felt-

like cloth covering your pool table. • At one time or another, everyone has had the misfortune of sitting behind a milver, a person who chatters non-stop through a movie. Related terms include pleniloquent (one who is full of talk) and blatteroon (a constant talker). Many of them have a cacoethes loquendi, that unquenchable desire to talk. No matter how you say it, you just wish they’d shut up! (Several of them are probably somniloquent as well, meaning they even talk in their sleep!) • The longest word in the English language is pneumonoultra microsocpicsilicovolcanocon-iosis, a disease resulting from over-exposure to ultra-microscopic silicone dust. Inhaling the dust found near volcanoes is a major cause of this disease. If this word frightens you, you may have hippopotomonstrosquippedaliophobia, the fear of long words. • When the time comes to absquatulate, it means it’s time to pull up stakes, to decamp and flee. • There are numerous kinds of beggars — A toothless beggar is a mumblecrust. One who pretends that his tongue has been cut out is a dommerer, while a female beggar who borrows or hires several children temporarily to arouse sympathy is an autem mort. There’s a whole new generation of beggars. The beggar whose parents are beggars is a palliard. If he bangs on a dish or cup to attract your attention, he’s a clapperdudgeon. No matter how you say it — mendicant, cadger, bezonian, panhandler, sponge, supplicant or gaberlunzie — He’s still a beggar. But, only a beggar monk can be a gyrovague. • What are you afraid of? If you are an epistaxiophobic, you are afraid of getting a nosebleed. Astrapophobics hide under the bed during thunder and lightning storms, while nosocomephobics have a fear of hospitals. Those suffering from pnigophobia are afraid of choking on fish bones, and koimetrophobics avoid cemeteries. Most people wouldn’t see anything unusual in being a little selacophobic or afraid of sharks. • When thinking of someone you know who is a workaholic, remember the technical term for someone who loves work is an ergophile. • Pity the poor fellow who’s married to an objurgatrix! His wife is a nagging, carping, fault-finding battle-ax of a woman. Other terms of endearment for this special lady include termagant, shrew, beldam, virago, harridan and xanthippe. • Something that causes cancer is said to be carcinogenic. Cariogenic items are much less serious — They cause dental cavities.

Too many veterans Spouses and family members of veterans who need services and benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs are often the ones who have to deal with the paperwork. Having a source for information and assistance can be immensely helpful. A fairly new website is shaping up to be a onestop source of information for the spouses of veterans. “The Veterans Spouse, Resources for the Family” at www.vetsspouse.com was started by two women, one the wife and daughter of career military veterans, and the other the wife of a soon-to-be veteran. While the site is just now up and running, it’s loaded with information that can help you. Here’s a partial list of contents: --How to file an appeal, along with a sample letter. --A template for general letters, along with a link to correct addresses to send them to. --A simplified guide to burial benefits. --Information on caregiver benefits and lots of links. --Eligibility for the death pension. --Clothing allowance for veterans with a prosthetic or special cream medication, with link to application. --Substitution of Claimant: If a veteran dies during the benefits process, another person, a family member, may apply to continue the claim. --Fiduciary appointment, when the VA decides it will appoint someone else to handle a veteran’s finances. --An Overview of Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). --Child-support information (No, it’s not protected. Veterans must pay court-ordered support.) --How to handle apportionment (garnishment of benefits). Check out VetsSpouse.com and bookmark it in your browser so you’ll know it’s there when you need it.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Information you need might be coming in sporadically, but at least what you’re getting is valuable. Continue to wait until more is available before acting on that career move. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You continue on an upbeat cycle, and with that strong Taurean energy you should see favorable results from your hard work. A pleasant surprise awaits you in your private life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A misunderstanding needs more time to be worked out. Don’t give up on it just yet. Remain open to providing explanations, if called for. Another friend offers good advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Fast action can correct a seemingly minor problem that has taken on some unexpectedly difficult aspects. Stay with it until it’s resolved. News on a more positive note is due soon. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some snags could cause delays in those plans you’re eager to see put into operation. But be patient. The Clever Cat will soon have good reason to celebrate a job well done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to let that Virgan sensitivity dissuade you from being the hardheaded realist you should be at this time. Your goals are in sight. Stay focused on them. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A more positive aspect opens up, allowing you to make some important changes in a personal situation. Remember to seek balance and avoid extremes as you proceed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good week to get out and enjoy the fine times you missed while you were so deep in those workaday projects. Be sure to share it with that special person. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Work and play are in balance this week. However, expect news that could tip things toward the workplace for quite a while. But all to a good end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re more productive on the job than you have been in some time. That’s good. But be careful not to overlook some situations developing in your private life. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ve been doing a lot for others (as usual). But now it’s time to focus on your needs, including finally going on that long-delayed trip you’ve been hoping to make. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s all smoothly going on ‘twixt you and that very special person in your life. But a colleague causes some disruption on the job that you might be called on to help settle. BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to the needs of others. But you’re no pushover. You would make a fine teacher, psychologist or minister.

Inspiration for Father’s Day
by Chris Benjamin “The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.” Proverbs 23:24 What an awesome responsibility and joy it is to be a father! As we reflect on what this day means, let us take time to acknowledge our Heavenly Father. The One who comforts us in times of need and rejoices in our times of happiness. In His presence, all worldy problems dissolve away as His loving kindness surrounds us. Fathers take this special day and use it to realign our priorities with our Father in heaven. He has sent us to be the good shepherds of our families. We must be the best providers and protectors of the ones we are charged to love unconditionally. How are we to do that? We have to seek God and his strength and wisdom to accomplish this mission. Turn to God in faithful prayer, seek His truth in the bible, and put our faith in righteous action. If we center ourselves in God and continually seek His ways, we will not fail to deliver worthy lives. I encourage all fathers to take time to learn about each individual in your family. Find out what makes each one unique and do something special for each one. Do something that says, “I am your father and I love you unconditionally. Never will I stop. We are together in this life and the next.” It is a difficult task to stay centered on being a godly father in our society. But it is what we are made for and called to do for God’s glory. Fathers, we can accomplish great things when we unite as faithful servants of God. Stay strong and know that we have the ultimate strength waiting to come to our side when we call. Look to the day when the Lord comes to call on us fathers with happy hearts, because we know we have been good shepherd’s to His children. Happy Fathers day!

Party Favors Hide Dinosaurs Inside Every preschooler I know loves outdoor summer fun, birthday parties and anything to do with dinosaurs. Put that combination together, and it’s likely that a dinosaur-themed party will be somewhere in your parenting repertoire during the early years. So save this recipe and use it when it’s time to create sandy triceratops party favors. These surprises inspired by another place in time are something the kids will never forget. If there are older kids in the family who have already earned their degree in the dino phase, let them get their hands in the mix and help you prepare this sand-goop recipe to make triceratops party favors for their younger brother’s or sister’s party. Once this sand clay is off the stove and has cooled (yes, you’ll be cooking sand!), mold it around plastic eggs containing little plastic or rubber dinosaurs. If you don’t have plastic eggs, mold the sand clay around the toys to form a ball. Anyway you do it, let them dry a few days until hard. On the day of your party, pass one out to each child, or hide them in your yard for guests to find in a treasure hunt. Invite them all to follow you to the sidewalk. Tell them to tap-tap-tap their eggs against the concrete. The eggs will break after a few tentative hits, and voila! Your party guests have just hatched a slew of baby dinos into the world! Perfect for a “birthday” favor. SAND CLAY RECIPE Put 1 cup clean sand, 1/2 cup cornstarch, 1 1/2 teaspoons powdered alum (in the spice section of your market) and 1/2 cup water in an old cooking pot. Stir with hands or a spoon. An adult should then place the pot on the stove, turn heat to medium and continue stirring with a spoon. As it becomes warm, it will begin to liquefy. Continue to stir for 2-3 minutes until clay thickens. Remove from heat and spoon mixture onto cutting board. Let cool. Make above-mentioned party-favor eggs or enjoy molding the clay into shapes and characters. There are probably as many ideas as there are grains of sand between your fingers!

Riviera Blvd. Foley, AL 36535 Phone: 251-943-7100 Service times: Saturday night @ 6:00pm and Sunday @ 9:00am & 10:45am ¥ It is still not known who made the following sage observation: “Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity.” ¥ If you are an aficionado of the word game Scrabble, you probably know that there are only five words that can be played using a q but no u. In case you’re not in the know, those words are “faqir,” “qaid, “ “qoph, “ “qindar” and “qintar. “ ¥ In 1774, surveyors in Maryland marked off a parcel of land by mistake. The error was immortalized when the town that grew up on that land adopted the name Accident. ¥ The English word “mistletoe” comes from an Anglo-Saxon phrase that means “dung on a twig.” It seems that the branches where mistletoe is often found have white splotches on them, which some say resemble bird droppings. ¥ The martial art that is known today as karate actually originated in India and spread to China before becoming popular in 17th-century Japan, where it was dubbed karate, which means “empty hand” in Japanese. ¥ These days you’ll rarely see an elected official with a beard, but facial hair wasn’t always considered to be a liability in politics. In fact, it’s been reported that Abraham Lincoln was inspired to grow a beard while he was running for president in 1860 because of a letter from an 11-year-old girl. Grace Bedell wrote to Lincoln that a beard would make him “look a great deal better, for your face is so thin. All the ladies like whiskers.” ¥ When the United States bought Alaska from Russia in 1867, the going price was 2 cents an acre. *** Thought for the Day: “Nothing gives an author so much pleasure as to find his works quoted by other learned authors.” -- Benjamin Franklin
A Note From the Editor “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” - Plato. I think this is one of the most important statements in history that applies to modern man even more now than in the days of Plato. In his time, people had arguments face to face with words being spoken in person rather than by phone, text or email. The modern age has given some people a false sense of swelled up courage when it comes to confrontation by technology. I’m a low key, passive person but when I received an email that infuriated me this past week I saw red and envisioned myself having a face to face screaming match with the sender of the email. After the wave of hot-faced anger I found myself taking a deep breath and wondering, “what in the world could have brought on this email?”, and the mental list began to grow. In the end, I was able to resolve that the sender, on this day, was facing a hard battle and I resolved to respond with a message of “I’m confused and hurt but will continue to be kind”. Turns out the sender was in the midst of fighting a hard battle and I was so glad I dug deep and found a way to pause and respond with kindness. The devil delights in anger and hot tempers and, even though quick negative reactions can’t always be foreseen or prevented, I encourage everyone in a heated moment to take a deep breath and ask, “What hard battle are they fighting?”.
Wishing everyone a wonderful week, Audrey Chambers

Chip Shot – Bump and Run By Bobby Eldridge
I’m golf shot shot
going to describe two very different shots to you. One is called a pitch with loft, and the other is called a chip with run. Now what’s the difference?
Well, first of all, sometimes the pin is in a situation where you have to go over an uneven lie, or you have to go over the edge of a bunker, or you have to go over a little tree and you need it to stop a little quicker. So, you take out your loftier golf club, your lob wedge or your sand wedge. Put the ball in the middle of your stance, a little weight left and swing your arms up and down. And after it hits the green, it will slow down and stop because it has so much loft on it. Now, for a chip shot, or a bump and run shot, it’s the same golf shot, but it’s done with a pitching wedge, or you could even use a 9 iron.
For Tee Times Please Call: 1-800-807-8915 or 251-986-8633 Pro Shop Hours 7 am to 5 pm
69 $49 $ 49 $44 $
In this situation, the pin is in the back of the green and there is no trouble in front of you. So, you put the ball in the middle of your stance, put a little weight on your left leg, and swing your arms up and down. But because you did it with a pitching wedge, the shot takes off flatter and runs more.

Now, some of you get confused because the pin is in the back of the green and you want it to run, but if you use your sand wedge or your lob wedge. That won’t happen. That won’t run. So, make sure in the future when you need a running chip shot, use a pitching wedge and put the ball in the middle of your stance. And if you really want it to run a lot, put it in the back of your stance. Try to change the golf club. Control the distance you want the chip shots to go by your club selection, not by the length of your swing. A chip shot or a bump and run shot is also useful from the fairway or any place around the green that you don’t have any obstructions. Sometimes you can be much more accurate by simply bumping an 8 iron up the fairway and letting it roll onto the green instead of trying to pitch it with accuracy. Usually your alignment will be a lot better using this tactic because much more of the shot occurs on the ground.

How Secure is Data In The Cloud? Understandably, this is the main concern of most users who consider using cloud storage and backup. This why you should choose a web-based backup solutions that uses the highest standards to safeguard the integrity and privacy of data before it is moved to the cloud:
Chocolate-Almond Strawberries If you love strawberries as much as I do, then you’ve been watching the patch as steadfastly as I have (and it really doesn’t matter if your “patch” is in your backyard or at your grocery store). Strawberries With Chocolate-Almond Cream Sauce is the current “most favorite” strawberry recipe for you to try. 4 cups sliced fresh strawberries 1 (4-serving) package sugar-free instant chocolate fudge pudding mix 2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder 1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup reduced-calorie whipped topping 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1 tablespoon mini-chocolate chips 1 tablespoon slivered almonds 1. Spoon 1 cup sliced strawberries into 4 dessert dishes. In a large bowl, combine dry pudding mix, dry milk powder and water. Mix well, using a wire whisk. Blend in whipped topping and almond extract. Evenly spoon about 1/2 cup pudding mixture over strawberries in each dish. 2. In a small bowl, combine chocolate chips and almonds. Evenly sprinkle 1 1/2 teaspoons chips mixture over top of each. Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes. Serves 4. ¥ Each serving equals: About 158 calories, 2g fat, 6g protein, 29g carb., 398mg sodium, 2g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 Fruit, 1/2 Fat-Free Milk, 1/2 Starch.
Encryption Before data is moved to its online backup destination, it should be encrypted using 256-bit AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). This is a highly secure encryption algorithm, approved as safe enough for protecting U.S. government classified material, and widely used by banks.
Protect Your Business Against Data Loss • Backup All Your Computers Anywhere • Encrypted For Your Security • Remotely Access Your Files From Anywhere • PC Performance Unaffected
Cost-Effective - All-in-One Solution
nvDataSafe provides a simple solution that saves you time and money and securely ensures your data with AES-256 level encryption.
Secure Connection In addition to the encryption of the data itself, online backups should be transmitted over an SSL (Secure Socket Layer) connection. SSL protects your data from being read or intercepted en route to the online backup infrastructure. Studies have shown that there is a greater risk of a security breach by people that work for you than your data being stolen online.
De-Cluttering For Mental Health Q: My husband has claimed pretty much the entire garage with his workshop, tools and lawn-care equipment. A lot of it is necessary, but he just keeps collecting stuff. He’s got least three of the same screwdrivers and wrenches, and endless jars of old screws, nails and fasteners. I’d love to be able to park one of our cars in there. Or at least, you know, walk around without tripping over stuff. How can I get him to clean out the place without starting a feud? -- Carol T., Providence, R.I. A: Getting your husband to neaten up what’s become his man-cave can be a real chore. He probably sees as necessary what you see as extraneous: those extra sets of tools have a purpose, at least in his mind. Talk directly to him about it -- the trick being not to ac-

cuse, nag or cajole him. He may not be very receptive to your request that he give you enough space to park the car in the garage, but tell him that’s what you want. Don’t build it into an argument; he’s likely to just dig his heels in and not budge at all. Instead, try to get him to talk about what he’d really like to do with the space. It’s hard to work in a messy workshop; did he have any projects planned that he hasn’t yet started? Does he really just want a place to get away for a few hours? Find out what he wants, and see if you can work from there. One option you might bring up is that the extra tool sets and other unneeded items can be sold by throwing a yard sale or putting them up online on a sales or auction site. The profit can be used to buy an item for the workshop, like a power tool, a refrigerator or an old couch. HOME TIP: A tackle box is one way to store different sizes and types of fasteners like bolts, nuts, washers, and so on. It’s portable and allows for quick access to the items you need to complete a repair.

The first critter we’ll educate on will be the nasty Formosan Termites. They are quite content living here in the south with all the heat, moisture and southern hospitality. Less common than the Eastern Subteranean Termites in many regions that support termite activity, these blond, bigheaded, sharp mandibled, destructive wood eaters adore the living conditions found here on the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast (more prevalent along the coastline and Eastern Shore) as much as we do. Their colonies are several times larger than their counterparts, they can create above ground nests with a little help from homes with water leaks or moisture accumulation, and they create far more damage in much less time. There is an increase in termite activity in general, those Formosans in particular. The climate provides conducive conditions for them to work and grow uninterrupted. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance for the safety of buildings and dwellings to contact a local termite professional such as Household Termite & Pest Control for a complete inspection at no charge. Our goal is to give you control over your structure and take back the region we love so much.
