A HOLLOW RESPECTABILITY A popular song by Aretha Franklin says, “All I want is a little respect.” If we are honest, we know that it is an understatement. We want more than just a little respect. We want recognition! We want admiration! We want to be the center of attention! Whether we admit it or not, we have at times wanted to be a star. It is not surprising that thousands of people line up for their audition to be the next “American Idol”. It is more than a little comical that many fancy themselves as the winner even though they obviously can’t sing. If we pay some attention to the lessons of life, we learn a little humility along the way. We realize that there are some things we will never have a talent for. We know that, even if we are good at something, there will always be somebody somewhere who can do it better. The boxer Muhammad Ali brashly proclaimed that he was “the greatest”. But even if he was for a while, it didn’t last very long. There was once a man who walked on this earth in freedom. He refused to play this game. People really tried hard to get him to go their way, but, though he was human, he seemed to just be made differently. His teaching turned everything upside down. He said that to be first we must be last. He said that in order to be great we must become the servant of all. He said that what we want to keep we must give away. He said that to be strong we must acknowledge our helplessness and weakness. He even said that to experience

life in a new way we must die to the old ways. And he taught that to become righteous we must see ourselves as sinners. Many of us profess to believe in this man enough to want to follow him, wherever he leads, throughout our lives. But it is a big order to change our whole way of thinking. Thankfully, some of Christ’s followers have finally begun to get the point, but we have a long way to go. Nevertheless, it is a start. Recently I was gratified to notice that the front doors of a local church are marked “servant’s entrance”. Can you imagine how powerfully different we would be if there were no “big shots”, and only servants, like He taught us to be? What would happen if we stopped competing, comparing, and counting? I am not exaggerating when I say that for most of my life the two things we always did in church was we counted the people and we counted the money! Sadly, the underlying truth was that we were measuring our success in those terms. We wanted to reassure ourselves that we were “succeeding in God’s work.” We wanted to be bigger. We wanted to see ourselves as important. We wanted a little respect. We were completely missing the point. We are specifically admonished to “judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes.” We are told that there is but one good judge, namely God himself. We are let in on the fact that His thoughts and ways are not the same as ours. Yet so foolishly we often measure our “success” in terms of numbers and dollars and budgets and bricks.

But when we finish playing the religious games, we begin to see that it is really entirely about grace. Our other “accomplishments” are irrelevant, inadequate, sad, and silly. When I finally saw the truth of radical grace, I didn’t have to convince anybody that I was righteous or successful. I became free enough to be really honest, because there was nothing to prove, nothing to protect, nothing to perform, and nothing to pretend! The grace of God is so much greater than all of our religious qualifications that it nullifies our need to even acknowledge them!

Perhaps we will get the point that what “good people” we are and what “good things” we do are really not that good at all. Who and what we are, if there is anything in us that is “good” at all, is because of something that we didn’t earn or pay for or deserve, but was given to us as a gift. “Amazing grace… saved a wretch like me.” But when I stop seeing myself as a wretch, I stop being amazed by grace. As I look into my own heart, I still struggle with wanting to be respected, acknowledged, and admired. My proud ego continues to be in a battle against amazing grace. It is a battle I hope to lose. Help When one is saved, you have many opportunities to grow. You can be helped now. You can go to church to learn more about Jesus. You can go to the alter to pray. Your needs can be met for he will meet them. He will meet you there. A person who goes to church has a better chance at being at home with himself and the universe; a better chance of getting along with other people, a better chance of fellowship with God now and eternally. A better chance of using his time, talents and money. You will have a better chance of making your life count for good and right. Of successfully dealing with the enemy, crushing sorrow and unhappiness. While there are waiting lists for certain grade levels, there is still room for new students in most of our classes. If you would like your child to receive their education in a close knit, friendly, family type atmosphere where God’s word is taught and emphasized in every subject, then AGCCA may be the place for you. Located in a quiet country setting at the corner of county roads 28 and 71 in Summerdale, AL, the school boasts of a quality Christian education in a family atmosphere. We strive to teach the whole child and instill a faith in God that the student will have with them long after graduation. Our theme for next school year is “Serving in HIS steps” taken from John 12:26. We have daily Bible classes and daily chapel services that will emphasize the idea of serving God. Additionally, this summer AGCCA had a school mission trip to Costa Rica where teachers and students were able to serve others in a foreign context for 10 days. At AGCCA we want to impress on our students that we have opportunities every day to serve God and serve others in His kingdom. In addition to serving God, we have also been earnestly working to prepare for the school accreditation process. We are excited to host our on site visit for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the National Christian Schools Association during April of the 2012-2013 school year. We feel that this accreditation will serve to further validate the excellent education that our students already receive each year. To coincide with SACS accreditation, we have also added a mobile computer lab to our school. We have purchased a classroom set of laptops and plan to use the school’s existing Wi-Fi service to bring the computer lab to our classrooms. We have also hired a certified Art teacher to our staff for the 2012-2013 school year to further serve the needs and talents of our student body. We would like to invite you to stop by our school one day and see the Smart Boards that are in every classroom in action, and say hello to our family of students and teachers. Please visit our website at www. gccacademy.org or call our office at (251)9892333 for further information about how your child could benefit from a quality Christian education.

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
