Independence Day is the most important national holiday in the United States. It commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which broke the formal ties between the colonies and Britain after the American Revolution had begun. Canada observes its equivalent of Independence Day, the establishment of its federal government, on July 1. Now known as Canada Day, this holiday was previously known as Dominion Day and Confederation Day and commemorates the British North America Act of July 1, 1867, which gave Canadians home rule. • The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament. • In May 1775, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. While the overall state of Social Security wouldn’t be affected that much, it would be a burden for those who’ve done the hard work all their lives. So says a report by the American Institute for Economic Research. Think about it: Those of us who’ve done physical work all our lives want to retire earlier. We’re tired and need a break. A researcher examined records for a period of 21 years and found that: --Less than 5 percent of workers in white-collar professions retire at age 65. This group includes lawyers, scientists, managers and administrators. --Those who do manual labor, the blue-collar workers among us, retire at age 65 at the following rates: 32 percent -- foremen, machine operators
Picnic Chicken This walnut-crusted baked chicken is delicious hot or cold. Olive oil nonstick cooking spray 1 3/4 cups (about 8 ounces) walnuts 1 cup plain dried bread crumbs 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon up to 1/2 teaspoon of ground red pepper, also known as cayenne 2 large eggs 8 medium (4 pounds) bone-in chicken breast halves, skin removed 8 medium (1 3/4 pounds) chicken drumsticks, skin removed Choice of sauce 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Grease two 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch jelly-roll pans with cooking spray. 2. In food processor with knife blade attached, process walnuts with 1/4 cup bread crumbs until walnuts are finely ground. In medium bowl, combine nut mixture, salt, ground red pepper and remaining 3/4 cup bread crumbs; stir until well-mixed. In pie plate, beat eggs. 3. Cut each chicken breast half crosswise into two pieces. One at a time, dip breast pieces and drumsticks in beaten egg, then into walnut mixture to coat evenly, pressing firmly so mixture adheres. Arrange chicken in jelly-roll pans; lightly coat chicken with cooking spray. 4. Bake chicken until golden brown and juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, 30 to 35 minutes, rotating pans between upper and lower oven racks halfway through baking. 5. Serve chicken hot, or cool slightly, cover and refrigerate to serve cold later. Makes 12 main-dish servings. ¥ Each serving: About 311 calories, 16g total fat (2g saturated), 113mg cholesterol, 468mg sodium, 10g total carbs, 32g protein.

They’ll still retire, but their Social Security each month will be less than it would be at full retirement age. The current debate is whether raising the retirement age would have any benefit to the Social Security program itself. One study that showed raising the earliest retirement age from 62 to 65 would have only “modest effects” on the health of Social Security. On the other hand, to keep working requires that one have a job. It’s shown that the unemployment rate for those age 55 and older is the highest it’s been in 60 years. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress. • Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, John Adams originally thought it would be celebrated on the second. Here is what he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God.” • The signing of the Declaration was not completed until August 1776, but the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. It was not declared a federal holiday until 1941. Today, it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States. • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it. • The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. Some accounts claim that it was The Liberty Bell sounding from the tower of Independence Hall on that day that summoned citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration, which was given by Colonel John Nixon. • Within a few years of that first commemoration, the Fourth of July was observed throughout most of the new nation. • The first two versions of the famous Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1846, when, according to legend, it cracked as it was being tolled for the celebration of George Washington’s birthday. • In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the sea, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France. • An elaborate Fourth of July celebration was held in Philadelphia in 1788, following the ratification of the Constitution. • The first public Fourth of July event at the White House occurred in 1801. • The first Independence Day celebration west of the Mississippi occurred at Independence Creek, Kansas, and

was celebrated by the explorers Lewis and Clark in 1804. • Several important U.S. projects were started on Independence Day. Work on the Erie Canal in New York State began on July 4, 1817. Construction of the first railroad in the United States, the Baltimore and Ohio, was started on July 4, 1828. July 4 was the date selected in 1848 for laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. • Two American icons who were instrumental in ensuring the country’s independence passed away on July 4. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day in 1826. • The patriotic poem “America the Beautiful” was published on July 4, 1895, by Wellesley College professor Katherine Lee Bates. • The July 4 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened its flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, New York. • Now, every July 4, a group of 20 steely-stomached individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s on Coney Island for the world hot dog eating championship. At 12 noon exactly, crushed by fans and media, the competitors begin the historic 12-minute contest. • Several places in the United States have “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents. Other places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these. There is one place named “patriot,” Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202. • What could be more fitting than spending July 4 in a place called “America”? There are several such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents. • On July 1, 1867, under the terms of the British North America Act, Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick united to become the Dominion of Canada. • Canada Day became a statute in 1879 but was initially called Dominion Day. There are not any records of early celebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day, except for two years. In 1917, it was used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Confederation. It was also a backdrop for the dedication of the Parliament Building’s Centre Block, which was being constructed. • The government extended celebrations beyond the Ottawa region in 1980 by sponsoring the development of festivities on a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks to commemorate the day. • It wasn’t until 1982 that Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day.

Veterans of wartime service are eligible for a pension if they meet certain criteria: age 65 or older, can’t work, service during a certain period, have limited income. These criteria must be met, especially the limits on income. I hate to think it, but a number of veterans are cheating the system, and financial planners are helping them. The Government Accountability Office has unearthed no less than 200 companies that sell estate-planning services designed to help veterans who have too many assets to qualify for the pension benefit. Of those, the GAO investigated 20 companies that help establish trusts, set up annuities and transfer assets (that’s currently allowed under law). Of course these companies charge a fee, from hundreds to many thousands of dollars, for their advice -- advice that might not be in the veteran’s best interest. A bill is making its way through Congress that would require stronger oversight of the benefits money. For example, depending how the final version of the bill reads, there could be a “look back” of three years. That means the veteran’s finances and assets will be scrutinized to see if he or she transferred any assets during that time to make the income look smaller. If you’re tempted to transfer assets to make it look like you qualify for the pension (even though it’s currently legal), be careful. If you apply for Medicaid, it does a 60-month look-back. If you’ve transferred assets, your Medicaid longterm-care coverage could be delayed for a long time. If you put assets into an annuity, thinking that you’ll have a monthly income from it, you might be locked out of it for years. One afternoon, I noticed there was a crowd gathered around him watching with great anticipation a magic trick being performed. I arrived just in time to witness his grand finale: pulling a bouquet of flowers out of thin air. The surprise on the kids’ faces -- and mine -- was a sight to behold. Immediately, experiment with it to discover its unique properties. Squeeze it, hit it or let it drip through your fingers. Or, place it on a cookie sheet, press it flat, roll it in a ball or let it go. It’s amazing! If you have a bowlful, set plastic toys on it and watch them sink like they’re in quicksand. For another surprising experiment, let it evaporate in the sunshine to discover cornstarch once again. Add water and you’ll have another batch.

By Richard Myers The grip is your only connection with the club so it follows that a good golf grip is an essential component of a good swing and good golf game. Placing your hands properly on the golf club helps you better control the position of the club’s face at impact. During the swing your body turns to create power. Since the body is rotating, the golf club must rotate at the same rate. In other words, the body and the club must turn together as a team. A fundamentally sound golf grip helps you create both power and feel. The action of your wrists is a source of power so gripping the club too much in the palm of your hand reduces wrist action. Since our fingers are the most sensitive parts of our hands, placing the club more in the fingers rather than in the palm increases the amount of wrist hinge, which results in longer tee shots and more feel. Regardless of the type of golf grip you choose, a sound golf grip involves light grip pressure. Gripping the club too tight can cause thin, weak shots that slice. A lighter grip also enhances wrist hinge. This light pressure also increases the amount of clubface rotation, improving your chances of squaring the club at impact. The Vardon overlap, sometimes called the overlapping grip, is the most common golf grip. Most golf instructors use this grip popularized by Harry Vardon around the turn of the 20th century. To correctly use this grip, take the little finger on your trailing hand and place it between the index and middle finger on your lead hand (for right-handed golfers, the lead hand is the left). The lead hand thumb should fit right along the lifeline of the trailing hand. The next most common golf grip is called the interlock or interlocking. Several top players, including Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, use this grip. This grip locks the hands together. You might, however, find that the handle migrates to your palms which reduces wrist action and, therefore, power. People with small hands, weak forearms and wrists, and beginners often prefer this grip. To use the interlock grip, take the little finger on your trailing hand and intertwine it with the index finger on your lead hand. The lead hand thumb should fit in the lifeline of the trailing hand. The ten finger grip (sometimes called the baseball grip) is the least preferred golf grip among instructors but it does have its advantages. It can be good for beginners and people who experience joint pain, have arthritis or small, weak hands. To position your hands properly using a ten finger grip, start with a perfect lead hand grip. Place the little finger of the trailing hand close against the index finger of the lead hand. Cover the lead hand thumb with the lifeline of the trailing hand.

Mosquito Madness Part One Summer is here and with it comes backyard barbeques, outdoor birthday parties and water games to keep cool. It also means the mosquitoes are out and hungry for tasty humans and animals. Can we ever stop the spread of mosquito born viruses or the angry, itchy spots where those little vampires have sucked us dry? Some things you can do to keep the population of mosquitoes down is by eliminating standing water. This can be in old tires, large outdoor pots or decorations, stumps, culverts, clogged eaves, cans, birdbaths, pet/water troughs, children’s toys, cemetery urns, ponds, plugged drainage culverts, construction sites, etc. Remove the water, change it every couple of days or treat it, depending on its size. It’s important to be aware of problem areas and treat them immediately. The first step in mosquito control is eliminating breeding grounds; a concentration of future bloodsuckers is easier to treat than biting adults. Using approved larvacides is recommended for larger bodies of water or stagnant water sites such as ditches, large bird baths, and ponds to stop the next generation. Keep grass and weeds cut, as the adults like to hide in these areas. Make sure to use EPA approved repellents and larvacides; these items can be found at Household’s Do It Yourself store located on Hwy 59, across the street from Hoods.
