3745 Gulf Shores Pkwy, Gulf Shores, AL 36542 Granito’s House provides high quality granite countertops, cabinets, and flooring to customers throughout the Gulf Coast.

Our friendly and courteous staff guarantees excellent customer service.

It all started that shocking Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, as 183 Japanese warplanes attacked America’s Hickam Field, Pearl Harbor, in Hawaii. The devastating results were 2,433 deaths, the destruction of 18 U.S. warships and 188 airplanes. The surprise attack left the nation stunned as President Roosevelt called the United States to war. With American men enlisting in the war effort, the work force quickly diminished. Who would “man” the assembly lines in the factories to produce the many needed items for the current war? Filling a gross shortage of manpower, through the factory gates flooded an army of woman power. Mothers, daughters, secretaries, wives and even schoolgirls picked up the factory duties the men had left behind. Continual appeals were issued from government sources throughout the war, with articles and ads placed in magazines to get women’s attention. Such titles as, “Women, you could hasten victory by working and save your man,” abounded. The Magazine War Guide recommended that all published magazines participate in a “Women at work” cover promotion to emphasize not only defense and factory work, but all kinds of employment opportunities for women. One of the many slogans shouted, “The more women at work, the sooner we win.” More than six million female workers helped to build planes, bombs, tanks and other weapons that would eventually win World War II. They stepped up to the plate without hesitation and gave up their domestic jobs to accomplish things that only men had done before them. They became streetcar drivers, operated heavy construction machinery, worked in lumber and steel mills, unloaded freight and much more. Proving that they could do the jobs known as “men’s work” created an entirely new image of women in American society, and set the stage for upcoming generations. ABSURDITY IN MY FAMILY My father was a good man who tried his best to take care of his family. I loved him and I miss him. But I want to tell you briefly about three other very special men who greatly affected my young life. I never knew the name of the first one at all. The second man I only knew by his first name, and the third one I only knew by his last name. But all three of them touched my life in unusual ways at unusual times. I am so thankful that these men came into my life when they did. Yet, incredibly, my father did not want to know them, see them, or hear about them. I know it sounds strange, but he absolutely refused even to listen to the stories that I am about to tell you. The first one came into my life and back out in less than a minute’s time. I was a seven year old boy, somewhere in a lake. It was the middle of a hot summer. Somehow I got out into water that was over my head, and I couldn’t swim. I remember gasping for breath, bouncing my feet on the muddy bottom of the lake, and reaching up, with my hand no longer able to reach the surface. All sounds of the other people swimming faded away into quietness as I went under into the darkness. Nobody was aware that I was drowning. Absolute panic began to seize me. Just at that moment, this man came through the water with a “whoosh”, and immediately took me in his incredibly strong arms, carrying me safely to shore! He then sat me down at the water’s edge and quickly disappeared. I remember that I never had the chance to even thank him before he was gone. God bless that young man who literally saved my life! I never knew his name at all. But I remember that when I got home

and told my father, he didn’t even want to hear about it.

him will never go away.

The second man was just called “Ernie”. I was twelve years old, and had a job in Constantine’s restaurant in Birmingham. Ernie was the cook. What was so special about Ernie the cook? Just that he was the first adult to ever talk to me and treat me like I was an adult! He spoke with me, on my own level, not “at” me like I was just a dumb kid. With him I felt valued and appreciated. Ernie worked there for many years, with a quiet confidence and maturity that earned him respect from everyone. After I left that job, I even came back a few times, just to see Ernie. But strangely, when I told my father that Ernie was my friend, he strongly disapproved. Dad never even wanted to meet Ernie.

Unfortunately, my father felt differently.

The third man who had such a great effect on my life was known as “Mister Meredith”. I will never forget the day we met. I was seventeen, had just finished high school and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. I was flown to California, and Mister Meredith met us at the entrance to the Coast Guard base in Alameda. He was six foot three, 230 pounds of muscle and steel. He asked me my name, and I told him, “Lee.” He bellowed, “You mean Lee, SIR, don’t you?” My father had instructed me NOT to call him “sir”, so I said no, I don’t mean “sir”, just “Lee.” Mister Meredith picked me up and shook me until my teeth rattled and my heels kicked against my butt. He asked me if I wanted to live to see another day... and I whimpered, “yes, sir!” From that time on, through the next three months of “boot camp”, Mister Meredith taught me strength of character, endurance, and discipline. He was my company commander, and he was the best. I learned so much from him, and he must have forgiven me for that first time we met, because he let me live. And I know that if I saw him today, I would still call him “sir”! The respect I have for

Perhaps you are wondering why my dad, a really good man in so many ways, would not even want to hear about these men. One had saved my life, one had been a great friend, and one had taught me so much. Yet my father who loved me told me not to honor them, befriend them, or show them respect. Why would he be that way? Would you like to guess? The answer.... an answer that is beyond all absurdity... was simply this: their skin was black. That was it. For no other reason than their color, Dad rejected these men who had meant so much to me. Over the years I have learned to appreciate the good that was in my father, while totally repudiating his ridiculous racial prejudice. He died in 1984, and even before his death many of those attitudes changed. But can I tell you one more secret? I have dreamed about this, and I have asked God to please let me do one special thing when I get to see my dad again. I want to introduce these three men to him. I want to say, “Look, Dad, this is the man who saved my life when I was drowning! And this is my friend Ernie!” And my father will give them a big hug and say “Thank You!” Then I will introduce my father to Mister Meredith. And my dad will look up at him and say, “Pleased to meet you, sir!” [ Condensed from “Broken Roads to Grace” by Jim Lee. A Note From the Editor

I was once a big worrier and God began to deal with me about it. I went to a revival at a church where my brother James and his wife attended. The guest evangelist called me up front. He said, “God wants you to stop that worrying. Every time he gets ready to do something you asked of him, you take it right back.” See, I wasn’t trusting God for those particular things. The Bible tells when we delight ourselves in him, he will bring it to pass if it is for our good. Then one night right after I got into bed and was so worried about so many things, God spoke this to me and said,”Leila, Leila, don’t worry, everything will be alright.” He said this three times. He sometimes brings that to my remembrance and I’m so thankful to him. The Lord continued to deal with me but mostly by his word and I’m learning more and more to trust him. Are you trusting him? Is it sometimes hard to believe that he loves you. Tell him you love him and know he loves you even though you may not feel it at times but you believe it because his word tells you. Refuse to tolerate any thought contrary to his word. Refuse to allow or tolerate worry.

Page 24 For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call Tidbits® of Baldwin County (251) 229-4519 • June 27 - July 4, 2012 to honor active military, veterans, honor flight participants, National Guard, VFW members, local police and fireman, families of active service members and those who have lost loved ones while serving our Country.

Beginning at 10 am, on the grounds of the Summerdale Church of Christ Guest Speaker: Dr. Barry Booth - Vietnam Veteran and Honor Flight South Alabama Chairman Live Music, Military Equipment Display, Kids Inflatables, Food, Drinks, Souvenirs and More....

Sponsored in part by The Snook Foundation Alabama Gulf Coast Christian Academy was founded in 2006 with 21 students but is quickly approaching 100 students in grades PK3 – 12 for the 2012-2013 school year. While there are waiting lists for certain grade levels, there is still room for new students in most of our classes. If you would like your child to receive their education in a close knit, friendly, family type atmosphere where God’s word is taught and emphasized in every subject, then AGCCA may be the place for you. Located in a quiet country setting at the corner of county roads 28 and 71 in Summerdale, AL, the school boasts of a quality Christian education in a family atmosphere. We strive to teach the whole child and instill a faith in God that the student will have with them long after graduation. Our theme for next school year is “Serving in HIS steps” taken from John 12:26. We have daily Bible classes and daily chapel services that will emphasize the idea of serving God. Additionally, this summer AGCCA had a school mission trip to Costa Rica where teachers and students were able to serve others in a foreign context for 10 days. At AGCCA we want to impress on our students that we have opportunities every day to serve God and serve others in His kingdom. In addition to serving God, we have also been earnestly working to prepare for the school accreditation process. We are excited to host our on site visit for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the National Christian Schools Association during April of the 2012-2013 school year. We feel that this accreditation will serve to further validate the excellent education that our students already receive each year. To coincide with SACS accreditation, we have also added a mobile computer lab to our school. We have purchased a classroom set of laptops and plan to use the school’s existing Wi-Fi service to bring the computer lab to our classrooms. We have also hired a certified Art teacher to our staff for the 2012-2013 school year to further serve the needs and talents of our student body. We would like to invite you to stop by our school one day and see the Smart Boards that are in every classroom in action, and say hello to our family of students and teachers. Please visit our website at www. gccacademy.org or call our office at (251)9892333 for further information about how your child could benefit from a quality Christian education.

Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31
