by Patricia L. Cook Whether your favorite melon is watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew or an exotic variety, this is the season for enjoying melons in the northern hemisphere. This Tidbits explores melon facts, figures and entertaining trivia.

• All melons belong to the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae, which is the family that includes cucumbers, squash and pumpkins. Because they grow on long, trailing vines, melons require lots of garden space. Generally, given adequate room, melons are easy and fun to grow.

• Along with the long vines are leaves that provide shade during the day, protecting the developing fruit from the hot sun. Melons need hot sun and a long growing season to grow to maturity. Also, melon blossoms need bees for pollination.

• Melons are divided into two groups with watermelons in a class by themselves. The other group is muskmelons. Watermelon seeds are spread throughout the middle of the melons (even “seedless” have some); muskmelon seeds are concentrated in a

Last year the AARP sued the Department of Housing and Urban Development because of tactics that were being used to scam seniors in reverse mortgages.

Now Consumers Union, the group that brings us Consumer Reports magazine, is asking for stricter oversight of reverse mortgages. While reverse mortgages can be a lifesaver in certain situations, for most senior homeowners that particular route is full of potential danger.

Mortgage origination costs can be astronomical, draining away the equity. Scammers tie home-equity mortgages to other financial products.

And, it learned, homeowners were found in default if they failed to pay property taxes or homeowners insurance.

The biggest concern, however, is if only one spouse’s name is on the paperwork. You can’t take a reverse mortgage unless you’re age 62. If only

2. Place pork chops on grill over medium heat. Cook pork chops until lightly browned on both sides and chops just lose their pink color throughout, about 10 to 12 minutes, brushing with mustard sauce remaining in bowl and turning them occasionally. Place pork chops on 4 dinner plates; garnish with parsley sprigs. Serve with Glazed Peaches, if you like. Serves 4.

3. Glazed Peaches: About 10 minutes before serving, cut each of 4 medium-size peaches in half; remove pits. In small bowl, with spoon, mix 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar with 1 tablespoon water. Place peach halves on grill over medium heat and cook 5 to 8 minutes, brushing peaches with brown-sugar mixture and turning peaches occasionally, until hot and lightly browned. ¥ Each serving (without peaches): About 280 calories, 12g total fat (4g saturated), 54mg cholesterol, 630mg sodium, 15g carbohydrate, 26g protein. ¥ Each serving of peaches: About 65 calories, 0g total fat (0g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 5mg sodium, 16g carbohydrate, 1g protein. one spouse is that age, then only that person’s name goes on the paperwork. If that older spouse dies, the younger spouse can be evicted from the home if he or she can’t come up with all the money to immediately pay off the mortgage.

Consumers Union is asking for a number of safeguards: ¥ Ensure that the loan is suitable for borrowers and won’t put them at risk. ¥ Establish a fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interest of the homeowner. ¥ Outlaw deceptive marketing. ¥ Prohibit mingling a reverse mortgage with other financial products. ¥ Strengthen the pre-mortgage counseling that homeowners are required to have. ¥ And the big one: protect the non-borrowing spouse.

• If cantaloupe is your favorite, and you are wondering where they fit, they are muskmelons. North America (N.A.) cantaloupes are not true cantaloupes!

• True “cantaloupes” originated in Cantalupo, Italy. They are hard-shelled melons, with wart-like growths on their hard green skin. True cantaloupes are not grown much outside of Mediterranean countries.

• N.A. cantaloupes are actually muskmelons. While all cantaloupes are muskmelons, not all muskmelons are cantaloupes! Some other muskmelons are: Honeydew, Casaba, Crenshaw and Persian types like Bender, Montreal and Banana. While you may not be familiar with all of these, many of the less traditional types of melons are now being cultivated in North America. Be adventurous and try some new melons found at your grocery store or farmer’s markets.

• The leading states for producing N.A. cantaloupes are California, Arizona, Texas, Georgia and Indiana. The world leader today for watermelon production is China.

The United States is number four.

• The leading states for producing honeydew melons are California, Arizona and Texas. The honeydew is one of the few melons that will continue to ripen after picking.

Another name sometimes used for honeydew melons is “temptation melons.”

• This is probably not surprising news, but more than two-thirds of all melons grown in the United States are grown in California. Florida and Georgia are the top states for watermelon production. Many of our melons are imported, usually from Mexico and Chile. The United States imports more melons than any other country.

• Most historians believe that watermelons originated in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. Melons seeds in ancient tombs indicate that melons were in Egypt about 4,000 years ago.

• Some botanists believe that watermelons are not actually melons but should be considered cucumbers.

One of the reasons they say this is because muskmelons easily cross-pollinate with one another forming new hybrids, but watermelons will not cross-pollinate with other melons.

• Watermelons are 92 percent water, hence the very appropriate name, and the reason it is advisable to buy heavy melons. They contain approximately 6 percent sugar and are rich sources of vitamins A and C. Even though most people only eat the red (or yellow, or other special colors) part of the watermelon, every part is edible.

• Watermelon is used more like a vegetable in Asian countries. In Chinese cuisine, watermelon rind is often stir-fried, stewed and pickled. The seeds are often baked for a snack. The Chinese eat more watermelon than any

other people.

• The Japanese have produced cube-shaped melons by growing them in glass molds. The melons cost much more than regular melons but fit in refrigerators more easily. Pyramid shaped melons are also occasionally seen. Since these don’t really fit better in a refrigerator, other than the fact that they won’t roll, the reason for these is probably just the novelty.

• There are more than 500 varieties of watermelon worldwide, but only a few are grown commercially.

Some of the common varieties sold in large numbers are Jubilee, Desert King, Sugar Baby, Peacock and Huck Finn.

• Melons, probably muskmelons, since they were available in Egypt many centuries ago, are mentioned in the Bible. The Hebrews who wandered in the desert eating “manna” missed their melons (Numbers 11:5).

• There are many melon festivals held celebrating local produce. One festival is the Milan Melon Festival in Milan, Ohio, held every Labor Day Weekend. This year’s festivities, the 53rd annual event, will be September 1-3. There are usually over 50,000 fun-loving people gathered to eat watermelon, muskmelon and more.

Festival specialties are watermelon sherbet and muskmelon ice cream.

• The Hope Watermelon Festival in Hope, Arkansas, “Home of President Bill Clinton, Governor Mike Huckabee and the World’s Largest Watermelons,” originally started in the 1920s but ended in 1930 because of the Great Depression. Restarted in 1977, it has been held every August since. The festival is where the Bright family has presented many world-record giant watermelons.

Ivan and Lloyd Bright presented a 200-pound (91-kg) watermelon in 1979 that held the world record for four years. After losing to a Tennessee farmer, they regained the title in 1985 with a 260 pounder (118 kg). In 2006, the “Guinness Book of World Records” certified Lloyd Bright with another record for a 268.8-pound (122-kg) watermelon.

• Cavaillon, in Central Provence, France, claims to be the “World Capital of Melons.” Their specialty is the Charantais melon, which is a small, round, striped melon with orange pulp.

• Because of reversed seasons in the southern hemisphere, the Chinchilla Melon Festival in Australia is held in February. The biennial event will be February 1417, 2013. The festival has many components including: melon bulls-eye, melon skiing and melon ironman.

Homeless veterans are frequently at a disadvantage when it comes to getting services and help.

Stand Down events are held specifically to assist homeless veterans. While Stand Downs can be held almost year-round, most communities and organizations host events during the summer. If you or someone you know is a homeless veteran in need of any services, now is the time.

Services provided at Stand Downs include assistance with food, shelter, clothing, health screenings and benefits counseling for both VA and Social Security. If a veteran needs referrals for jobs, drug- or alcohol abuse or housing, they can find that, too. Events run from one to three days, depending on location.

Many people, volunteers and groups step forward to host the Stand Downs -- community homeless agencies, the Department of Veterans Affairs, veterans service organizations -- all for one purpose: to help homeless veterans.

Being First There is a peculiar desire in all of us to be first in something, and there are very few activities we can engage in that exemplify that characteristic more than in sports or journalism. (Even politicians don’t want to win all the time ... there are some jobs you just don’t want.)

Through the centuries, numerous maxims have been handed down regarding this unceasing need to be first. “First come, first served,” “There can only be one,” “If you’re not the lead dog, the view never changes,” are but a few that immediately come to mind.

Often, being first is associated with winning. “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.” That comment, of course, gets challenged by many deep thinkers who would like to see people evolve a little bit. In many situations, the drive to be first can lead to lots of collateral damage, such as a stampede.

A few weeks ago, the mediaverse was all atwitter when CNN announced, wrongly, that the federal healthcare bill had been repealed by the U.S. States Supreme Court when, in fact, it did just the opposite. Instead of being first with the news, CNN lost credibility and are last in the cable news game.

Being second really has little worth in our society. Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon. Who was the second guy? But it’s better to be right than first in something. If Neil Armstrong and the moon crew were off on their calculations by just a fraction, they would have ended up hurtling into space, lost forever.

Charles Lindbergh became the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and he did it without a front windshield (the term “flying blind” applies here). Amelia Earhart attempted to fly around the world, and we all know how that ended ... uhh, actually, we don’t.

In June we watched Nik Wallenda walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. Some thought he was the first to do so, but we know he was not. Popular theory has Emile Gravelet doing the stunt first in 1859, but nobody can really be sure. What we do know is that he was the first (and only) tightrope walker to cook an omelet on a wheelbarrow filled with hot stones and then lower the frying pan to passengers floating on the “Maid of the Mist” below him.

The first person to win a marathon was a Greek soldier, but it wasn’t a game for him ... he was delivering a message from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens -- 26.2 miles.

Upon delivery, legend has it, he died.

So remember, when you’re breathing your last breath, make sure you can say that whatever it was that drove you in life, it was worth it in the end.

A golf ball is made up and constructed according to rules set forth by the United States Golf Association (USGA). These rules state that a golf ball must be in the shape of a sphere, 1.68” in diameter at the smallest, and a maximum weight of 1.62 ounces.

The golf ball is then tested by specific equipment put out by the USGA. With these proper tests, the ball is not allowed to generate velocity of over 250 feet per second. This equates to approximately 170 mph, and a temperature of 75 degrees (F).

Who is “Iron Byron”?

The USGA also has a very detailed robotic hitting machine which golf balls are tested with. It is known as the Iron Byron.

Each ball must not travel greater than the distance of 280 yards, with a tolerance percentage of no more than 6%.

What is the purpose of these guidelines? It is to prevent professional golfers from using non-standard golf balls that may travel farther than other balls. In other words, it is a checks-andbalances system to ensure that nobody is cheating with a ball that may have been purposely manufactured to fly at greater distances.

Of What Is A Golf Ball Made?

A well thought out design is engineered into every golf ball you play with. Each ball is either a two-piece or three-piece design.

And not every golf ball is made of the same material. Less expensive golf balls are typically made from a synthetic rubber substance known as surlyn.

Then there are golf balls made out of synthetic balata, which are often used by more experienced players who desire a ball that is softer and generates more spin. This type of ball gives the player better control with steering their shots. Most beginner and amateur golfers stick to the two-piece balls, as they have less spin, thus minimizing poor shots.

Q: I’ve seen ads for a spray-on leak fixer that’s advertised for leaky gutters, damaged shingles and other problem areas. What’s your take on this? Should I order a can? -- Jerry in Sedona, Ariz.

A: My first thought about this kind of fix-all product is that it may be a great help as a temporary patch, but a damaged gutter or shingle eventually will need to be fixed properly. And major damage, such as a ripped or cracked gutter, probably won’t hold up long with a spray-on patch.

I haven’t tried the product in question, so I could, of course, be wrong about its capabilities. However, there are other spray-on rubber brands available at hardware and homeimprovement stores. None that I’ve seen claim to fix leaks and large cracks; they’re advertised as sealants and as spray-on nonslip surfacing. They also cost much less, on average, than the product being advertised on television, especially with the cost of shipping and handling removed.

If you decide to purchase the product, I’d say it would likely work best as a sealant for gaps around things like air conditioning ducts and where pipes emerge from the wall.

Using it to patch areas or objects that bear weight -- like the joints between gutter sections, cracks in a deck’s wood flooring and so on -- is probably not a good use for the product. For patching the roof, I’d be very careful about using it: Eventually, a leaky area of the roof will need more permanent repairs. Replacement of damaged shingles or flashing, as well as repair of the damaged area, could be hindered, not helped, by the presence of spray-on rubber.

Alabama Gulf Coast Christian Academy was founded in 2006 with 21 students but is quickly approaching 100 students in grades PK3 – 12 for the 2012-2013 school year. While there are waiting lists for certain grade levels, there is still room for new students in most of our classes. We have purchased a classroom set of laptops and plan to use the school’s existing Wi-Fi service to bring the computer lab to our classrooms. We have also hired a certified Art teacher to our staff for the 2012-2013 school year to further serve the needs and talents of our student body.
