TIDBITS® BRINGS YOU SOME BRAIN-Y FACTS
& Party Rentals
by Kathy Wolfe It’s amazing to ponder that a small three-pound organ controls a person’s entire body! Take some time to consider these facts about the human brain, brought to you this week by Tidbits. • There are about 100 billion neurons, or nerve cells, in the brain, which gather and transmit signals. That’s about the same number of stars there are in our galaxy! It’s these nerve cells that compose what is often referred to as “gray matter.” About 100 trillion connections exist among those cells, and not one neuron touches another one. These connections are known as synapses, and they allow the information to flow from one neuron to another. Each nerve cell can have up to 40,000 synapses. • Changes in the synapses are associated with learning and retention of information. Each time you form a memory of some type, a new connection is created. When synapses deteriorate, memory loss and changes in brain function often occur. Studies indicate that people who perform mentally stimulating tasks are

To keep it safe, use a water bucket for spent sparklers. Another idea is to have an adult stationed at the bucket. The children must “turn in” a used sparkler to get a new one. Kids love to hear the “sizzle” when the hot metal touches the water, their feet won’t get burned on hot sparklers underfoot, and there will be no stray sparklers in the grass hidden for later.

¥ “Keep a globe or world map in your living room or family room, along with a dictionary. This way, you can look up the meaning or spelling of a word if you hear it on television, and you’ll be able to reference the map for places mentioned. I consult mine often.” -- P.A. in Florida ¥ “I use the large pails of kitty litter. They have a lid that can be removed completely, but also have a pour spout. I save my empties to collect rainwater. I remove the lid and set them out to catch water when it rains, then put the lid on so that the water does not attract mosquitoes. I use it to water my flowers between storms.” -- A Reader, via email ¥ “Purchase a variety of wooden frames from secondhand stores or tag sales, and paint them all one color. It makes a statement when you hang them all close together on a wall. We created a nice large display this way, and it was very inexpensive to do.” -- E.M. in Arizona ¥ Create your own charging station: Find a wooden box large enough to hold a multistrip power connection and pretty enough to sit on the counter. Drill one hole in the side to fit the plug. In the top of the box, create holes through which you can fit your electronics connecters (cellphones, iPods, camera, etc.). All the cords will be stored in the box, out of sight.
WE STAND BEHIND OUR FENCES
251-923-6278 jtcompanies.net Baby, It’s Hot Outside High summer temperatures can take a toll on seniors. Our circulation isn’t what it used to be. Add in some of the drugs we take that might have a diuretic effect, and dehydration can be a potential danger. The trick is to stay hydrated -- and cool. Staying hydrated means to drink enough water. Other drinks don’t count because sugar and caffeine drinks can be dehydrating in themselves. If you leave the house, take a water bottle with you. Ask your doctor how much you should drink per hour during heat waves, and follow his advice to make sure there is no conflict with any medication you’re on. Set a timer if you need to remember when to drink more water.
1. Spray 9- by 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line pan with plastic wrap. 2. Using 2-inch (1/4 cup) ice cream scoop, arrange 8 alternating scoops of sorbet (2 scoops of each sorbet) in 1 layer in pan. Place plastic wrap on sorbet scoops and press mixture down to flatten and eliminate air pockets; remove plastic wrap. 3. Repeat to make 2 more layers, alternating sorbets within each layer and from layer to layer, and making sure to press mixture down each time. Cover and freeze until firm, at least 6 hours. 4. To serve, uncover pan and invert onto platter. Wrap towels dampened with warm water on bottom and sides of pan for about 20 seconds to slightly soften sorbet. Remove pan and plastic wrap. Garnish loaf with coconut, raspberries, and mint. Makes 16 servings. „ Each serving: About 125 calories, 1g total fat (1g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 15mg sodium, 26g total carbs, 1g dietary fiber, 0g protein. If you have air conditioning, use it. If you have fans, use those. If you don’t have fans, call your local fire department (on the non-emergency number) or your town offices and ask whether anyone is giving away fans. If you don’t have a way to stay cool, spend a few hours at the library, senior center, the mall or movie theater, especially in the afternoon. Even three or four hours per day in a cool environment can go a long way to keeping you healthy. Close the curtains on the sunny side of the house. Open windows for a breeze. Wear loose, light-colored clothing. If you must wear a hat, be sure the top of your head can breathe. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from glare. During heat waves, it’s a good idea to do a phone check on elderly friends to be sure they’re handling the heat. Ask them to check on you a few times a day as well.

Researchers have determined that stress interferes with transmission, and nerve cells actually shrink from the effects of stress. Deterioration has also been linked to drug use and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as the chemicals in certain pesticides. • Information is processed by your brain at speeds up to 268 miles per hour (120 meters per second). There are more electrical impulses generated in a single day by the brain than by all the world’s telephones. The brain’s energy is sufficient to illuminate a 25-watt light bulb. • The two hemispheres of the brain are bridged by the corpus callosum, tissue that enables the two parts to communicate. This part of the brain is 11 percent larger in those people who are ambidextrous — able to write with both hands. • The cerebellum, located at the base of the skull, coordinates muscle movements and balance. Impairment in this area results in the loss of ability to walk or reach out and grab something. • Your brain uses 20 percent of all the blood circulating throughout your body. It flows through the 100,000 miles of blood vessels in the brain. All it takes is eight to 10 seconds of lack of blood to the brain for you to lose consciousness. • The brain also uses 20 percent of all the oxygen we breathe. It can live for four to six minutes without oxygen before damage begins to occur. Lack of oxygen for five to 10 minutes will result in permanent damage. • The horseshoe-shaped hippocampus is crucial in the process of transferring short-term memory into longterm memory. It’s responsible for forming, organizing and sorting memories. • The brain begins to shrink in mass by about 0.25 percent a year after age 30. By age 80, as much as 20 percent of the nerve connections in the hippocampus may have been lost. Only 30 percent of 80-year-old brains perform as well as those of young adults. • Wernicke’s Area and Broca’s Area are both important in the area of language. While Wernicke’s is responsible for comprehension of speech, Broca’s is involved in the production of speech. If Wernicke’s Area is damaged, a person loses the ability to understand language. He or she can speak clearly, but the combination of words makes no sense. Those with an impaired Broca’s Area understand language, but can’t properly form the words to produce speech. • If you’re having trouble focusing on a task and can’t complete a sequence of movements or solve a problem, you may have an impairment of the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex. This area can also produce

mood changes, changes in personality and social behavior, and an inability to interact with others. • Talk about using your brain to its full potential! Ben Pridmore is a world champion memorizer who memorized 96 historical events in just five minutes. It took this accountant just over 26 seconds to memorize the order of a shuffled deck of cards. His trick is to create associations between the items he is memorizing. •E ver wonder why you can’t tickle yourself? It’s because your brain is able to distinguish between unexpected touch and your own touch. •R esearch confirms that brain waves are more active when you are dreaming than when you are awake. If you’re average, you’ll have between four and seven dreams a night over the course of one to two hours. • Think about it! The average brain does just that — It produces about 70,000 thoughts on a normal day. •C ertain scents can trigger memories, for example, the smell of roses might bring a family member’s funeral into vivid focus. This is because the olfactory nerve, the one that registers smells, is very close to the amygdala, that part of the brain connected to emotions and their memories, and also to the hippocampus, an area associated with memory. If these areas are damaged, the ability to identify certain scents can be affected. • Want to increase your brain power? Reading aloud promotes brain development, as do music lessons, which boost the brain’s organizational ability. Children who learn two languages by the age of five will develop a denser gray matter. Those who grow up in a stimulating environment can have up to a 25-percent greater ability to learn. •D o all you can to keep your brain healthy! Avoid stress, which has been shown to affect brain structure and function. Studies show that artificial flavorings and preservatives also have a negative effect on IQ. And a seven-year study reported that those who eat seafood at least once a week have a 30-percent lower occurrence of dementia. • The third leading cause of death in America is by stroke. This occurs when blood supply to a part of the brain is disturbed, the result of a blockage, such as a clot, or by a lack of blood flow, such as a burst blood vessel or hemorrhage. The function of the affected area is severely affected, including inability to move limbs, understand speech or see. •A n elephant’s brain may be larger than a human brain, but its percentage of total body weight is much smaller. The human brain is about 2 percent of total body weight, but the elephant’s is just 0.15 percent.

I imagine the phonies and wannabes are chuckling up their sleeves right now. No longer do they have to worry (if they ever did) about getting caught lying about their alleged military service or medals earned. The Supreme Court has deemed that it’s just hunkydory to lie about those things, and they struck down the Stolen Valor Act. The Stolen Valor Act made it a crime for people to say they’d earned a medal in the military or that they’d served when they hadn’t. Didn’t matter whether the lie was put in writing or just stated to one or more people -- it was a crime under the Act. The Supremes bent over backward, it appears, to find reasons to overturn the Act. They chose to lean heavily on the “free speech” aspect, deciding that it was an infringement, and that it’s just fine to lie and claim earned medals and service. There is one clause in the court decision that leaves some slightly open doors: that it’s possible “to achieve the Government’s objective in less burdensome ways.” The way I read this, if a bill can be drafted that couches the problem in a slightly different way, perhaps the same objective can be reached: nailing those who lie about medals or service. If you agree, pick up the phone and call your congressional representatives. With enough pressure, someone somewhere will draft another version of the Act. If you need incentive, Google the images of “Xavier Alvarez” and take a look at him wearing a chest full of medals he didn’t earn. Read about his claims to a room full of people that he was a 25-year Marine Corps veteran, a helicopter pilot who rescued POWs in Vietnam and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. He never even served.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A turn in a relationship upsets the amorous Arian, who is puzzled by Cupid’s romantic antics. Be patient and considerate. The confusion soon will sort itself out. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for travel-loving Taureans to take off for fun-filled jaunts to new places. And don’t be surprised if Cupid tags along for what could be a very eventful trip. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You appear to be of two minds about continuing a relationship that seems to be riding roughshod over your emotions. A frank talk could help you decide one way or the other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Stepping back from a relationship problem provides a new perspective on how to deal with it. Meanwhile, watch your words. Something said in anger now could backfire later. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A changing situation makes the Big Cat uneasy. But hold on until things settle down around the 4th. Meanwhile, continue your good work on that still-unfinished project. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A decided improvement in a workplace situation results in an unexpected, but very welcome, added benefit for everyone. Personal relationships also improve. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Money matters remain a bit unsettled but soon will ease into the kind of stability you appreciate. Meanwhile, an expanding social life offers a chance to make new friends. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Use an unexpected roadblock in your monetary dealings to reassess your financial plans and make changes, if necessary. It soon will be smooth sailing again. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Aspects of love are strong for both single and paired Sagittarians. Professional dealings also thrive under the Sag’s clever handling of difficult situations. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Set a realistic goal and follow it through to completion. Remember: You’re more likely to impress the right people with one well-done job than with lots of jobs left undone. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You like to plan ahead. That’s fine. But be prepared to make some changes because of an unsettled period that influences your aspects through the 4th. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A brief phase of instability affects your usual work cycle. Use the time to catch up on chores around the house or office. Things settle down soon after the 4th. BORN THIS WEEK: You love being the center of attention and probably would be a big success in show business.

Slurp and Savor Tasty Mango Salsa “The mangoes are falling,” chanted a chorus of excited young schoolkids in Haitian Creole while I navigated a rocky, muddy path in Haiti recently as a program volunteer with global health organization Medical Teams International (www.medicalteams.org). Sure enough, within seconds, a large, rosy-red and orange mango from a canopy of trees overhead landed with a thud right next to me. I quickly learned the kids’ way of biting into the outer skin (after I washed it), removing it with my fingers and then devouring the fruit slurp by slurp, first one half and then the other. There’s nothing quite as delicious as a treeripened mango. Now in season, beautiful vitamin- and mineral-rich mangoes are available at our local stores at reasonable prices. At snack time, remove the peel with a sharp knife and serve your kids long slices or chunks on a plate. Add other tropical fruits such as pineapple and papaya for additional authentic tastes of the Caribbean. For a highlight at your next barbecue, dice a mango and toss together with easy-to-find summer ingredients for this fresh and tangy mango salsa. It’s delicious as an accompaniment to grilled chicken breasts or fish such as halibut and salmon. Serve it as a side, or spoon it on top of the chicken and fish. It’s yummy with grilled shrimp, too.

KC Karma for Cano If you were tasked with picking three players from the American League to participate in the annual All Star Home Run Derby, the Kansas City Royals’ designated hitter Billy Butler’s name wouldn’t even cross your mind. No, if you were Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano, the winner of last year’s Derby who was charged with choosing the squad, you’d probably pick Prince Fielder, Jose Bautista and Mark Trumbo ... possibly Adam Dunn. Which is exactly what he did. And while the American League won the contest, Cano turned out to be the big loser that night. Last season, Cano won the Derby in truly grand yet heartwarming style. His father on the mound, he set a record by blasting home runs at will during the final round. The emotion between father and son resonated with players and fans alike. Presumable due to that episode, the powers that be in Major League Baseball decided to let the previous year’s winner choose the team of his choice. While that my seem benevolent to some, in most circles that’s also -- and more accurately -- referred to as being “thrown to the wolves.” Cano is a great baseball player. Who knows? He may become a Hall of Famer, but he certainly will win no awards in the public-relations department. He might perform at a high level 162 games a year, but he proved to have no clue how to play to his audience, and in the fiercely proud Kansas City of all places. Simply put, Cano didn’t select the hometown player for the contest, the aforementioned Butler. Frankly, as any knowledgeable fan of the game will agree, he didn’t deserve to be named to the team. And while Major League Baseball did the right thing for the best interests of the game by requiring a player be named from every team in the league, like an infield fly (baseball’s only intrinsic flaw), they didn’t see this controversy coming. Neither did the Yankee’s PR flacks. Beleagured Kansas City Royal fans made sure they got the message. While Royals’ owner David Glass, a Walmart executive, is content to put “break even” teams on the field, Royal’s fans are completely fed up. They took the snub as a slap to the face. and Cano’s remarks before the Derby insinuating the Yankee’s have more fans in the stands when they come to town, didn’t sit well with the Boulevard beer-and-barbecue set. Rabid fans listen to the two sports-talk stations in town like hungry raccoons in an apple orchard, feeding off each word. Reigning radio champion Kevin Keitzman fanned their flames, encouraging them to boo Cano -- and boo they did. It was more a statement of pride, that you can’t just come into someone’s house and disrespect the host, than it was of love for Butler (who is, don’t get me wrong, a very good and very classy ballplayer). The boo birds rattled Cano, who ended up hitting as many home runs in the contest as Butler did (zero). More than anything, however, they proved that there’s a reason why coaches fill out lineup cards and why fans control the All Star game. Call it Kansas City karma.

¥ It was German-American painter and lithographer Herm Albright who made the following sage observation: “A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.” ¥ It’s well-known that there were shortages of many items during World War II -- and caffeine was one. It was such a problem, in fact, that the chemists at Coca-Cola tried to find a substitute, even experimenting with a derivative of bat guano. The idea was nixed by an executive who was afraid of the public backlash if the truth ever came out. ¥ Just as a group of birds is called a flock, a group of frogs is called an army. ¥ Ever wonder why a barber pole has red and white stripes? It’s a rather grisly tale. At one time barbers did more than cut hair; they sometimes performed marriages and baptisms, served as dentists and even performed surgery. When engaged in the medical work, any excess blood was soaked up by white towels, which were often hung up on a pole outside to dry. As the wind wrapped the towel around the pole, it created a design of red and white stripes.

Success in anything is hardly possible without faith, and this is true of success in golf. One way to develop golfing faith is to study experts. Such watching builds up confidence that difficult shots can be made and that normal shots should be made. This causes man golfers to improve spontaneously, simply from the psychological lift that comes from a change in his attitude towards what can be done. Sometimes the improvement is permanent. Golf is a projection of life, and there are times in life when it is better to be realistically unrealistic. It is best for the individual golfer to believe that there is no limit to what he can do, for it is by such beliefs that he can continuously surpass himself. It is also best for the game of golf if all of us have faith that we can excel, though obviously everyone cannot be tops in a competitive game. The stimulus of this faith acting upon millions of golfers will help raise the level of present play. In the raising of this level, we shall experience the pleasure that comes when we share in the excitement of witnessing original methods break through physical and psychological barriers to new records. If a golfer cannot believe that he can be best, he must believe that he can be better. Even such a limited faith can lead him step by step to a brand of golf he might never have believed possible. No Transfer Of Training In previous generations, it was believed that the mind that was trained in one field would automatically be better fitted to do other things also. For instance, it was thought that training in mathematics would help you with Greek, that a good billiard player would automatically be an excellent putter, and that a polo player would have no difficulty in learning such a similar game as golf. Unfortunately, this is not true. Many experiments have shown that each new type of learning is almost always different from all other types. When there is some similarity, a portion of what one learns in one skill or game will carry on to the next, but this is not usual. There is one kind of learning in which substantial “transfer” can occur. This is the field of attitudes and principles. If I had attacked the problem of learning checkers with the same attitude I had toward chess, and if I had applied basic psychological principles to the process of learning, the results would have been approximately the same. All this comes under the general rule of “no transfer of training,” which when understood will help us avoid wasting time by practicing something which will not be of golfing benefit. In this connection, it is likely that there are few, if any, exercises that will materially assist the golfer. The practical application of this means that practice will not be efficient unless we practice the very thing we wish to learn, and unless we practice it under circumstances that duplicate precisely all conceivable factors that apply to the golfing problem. We see, as developing from this principle, that medal and match play, winter and summer play, friendly and competitive golf, windy weather and calm weather, flat or hilly courses, and indoor play all present changes in the golfing situation which the golfer has to learn as new skills. If we are thinking of individual shots, we see then that the ideal would be to practice a shot at the very point on the course and almost at the same time that it was missed. This is not practical, but he who is most careful in seeing that his practice shots duplicate his playing shots will learn the game most quickly. Remember to believe at all times that you can become a better player, and then practice every shot as a new skill and your game will definitely improve.

Mosquito Solutions Part 3 I don’t know about you but I’ve had enough of summer’s mosquitoes biting and leaving me red and itchy. It’s time to get serious about stopping them pre-flight. By now you all know that these nasty buggers are out to get you. So how do you fight back in a way that is actually effective? You’ve already eliminated the breeding grounds you can control. Those areas where water can be removed or changed has helped in lots of ways but there is still too much water around. The best step is treating stagnant water with a larvacide. This is the only chance you get to elimate a multitude of buzzing biters. This is due to them spending so much of their early days under water (see the life cycle picture below) in high numbers. So it’s important to remember larvacide, larvacide, larvacide.
For your protection we offer…… * Mosquito Control * Tick Treatments *Snake Removal * Bed Bug Remediation * Wildlife/ Nuisance Removal
There are many larvacides out there to help eliminate mosquito larva. It is critical to know how much to use per volume of water. Most larvacides are specific to their pest but must be used in proper concentrations. Contact a professional if you have questions regarding the amount to use for the body of water. The majority of larvacides pose no risk to people or animals when used properly. Did you know that mosquitoes don’t bite us for food? The only ones who actually bite are females who use our blood’s protein to feed her unlaid babies. So, we are the food for the next generations! Don’t be a victim, get your bug spray on before going outside so these females can take food from wildlife instead of humans. Larvacides and biting bug spray can be found at Household’s Do It Yourself Store on Hwy 59, across the street from Hood’s.
