by Kathy Wolfe The word “black” doesn’t mean just an object’s color — It has cultural and psychological meanings as well. This week, Tidbits explores a variety of areas where we see both the color and the word. • Those items that are black do not reflect any rays from the visible light spectrum. Rather, they absorb the frequencies of all color pigments. The presence of all primary colors creates black. The absence of these results in white. • Most of us are aware of the superstition that if a black cat crosses our path, bad luck is on the way. However, in Great Britain and Ireland, that feline is a symbol of good luck. The Scots even believe that a black cat near their house means prosperity is imminent. The Japanese also look upon it as good luck, and that ladies who own one will have many suitors. The Germans are very specific about the black cat’s route — If it crosses your path from right to left, it’s a bad omen, while a left to right course signifies future favorable times.

251-923-6278 jtcompanies.net Hiring a Caregiver Through an Agency When you hire a caregiver for a family member or parent, how do you know who or what you’re getting? If you hire someone through an agency, you would expect that it’s done all the background checks. But can you trust the agencies? AARP posted on its website the results of a study done by Dr. Lee Lindquist of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Lindquist discovered that only half of placement agencies do any background screening or testing of caregivers. Only one-third do any drug testing or check out qualifications. And only one-third send supervisors out to check on caregivers. Scary, isn’t it? Lindquist developed a list of 10 questions to ask agencies if you’re considering using them to hire a caregiver:

heat; add tomatoes and chives. Saute 2 to 3 minutes, until tomatoes are hot and skins start to split. Season with salt and pepper. Serves 4.

¥ Each serving: About 46 calories, 4g total fat, 4g total carbohydrate, 1g protein.

1. How do they recruit caregivers and what are their requirements? 2. What kind of screenings do they do? What level of background check? Any drug testing? 3. Is there any training, such as certification in CPR? 4. How are the caregivers insured? Are they bonded? 5. What skills do the caregivers have? Are they skilled in transfers, dressing and bathing? 6. How does the agency assess these skills? Do they reply only on the applicant’s word? 7. What is their policy if caregivers can’t do what is stated in the contract? 8. If you’re unhappy with the care, will the agency provide a substitute? 9. Is there a supervisor who will evaluate the quality of the care? How often? 10. Is the supervision via phone or home visits? Your best bets: Look for a caregiver through your church or support group. Ask others for recommendations. Contact seniors service agencies for recommendations.

For Any and All Distribution Needs or Questions Please Call (251) 229-4519 • July 25, 2012 • If you drive a black vehicle, supposedly you are empowered and not easily manipulated. You also love elegance! • To the Japanese, black is the symbol of nobility, age and wisdom. Contrast this with their view of white, which represents serfdom, youth and naïveté. In light of this, they award the black belt in martial arts as a symbol of achievement and seniority, as a sign that the individual has “blended the mind and body into one, into a unity within oneself and with the universe.” • Black History Month has been officially observed since 1976, when President Gerald Ford called on all Americans to recognize February as a time to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” • The ancient Aztecs viewed black as the color of war because black obsidian glass was used to make the cutting edges of their battle swords. Black also represented the institution of religion, because their priests wore only black. • Traditionally, musicians in the orchestra pit wear black attire. This is not only because of the formal look, but more so, not to draw attention away from those performers on stage. • The wearing of black clothing while in mourning dates back to the Roman Empire in the western world. However, in Japan, the color of mourning is white. • In the field of astronomy, a black dwarf is a star that has burned out, while a black hole is an area in space created from a collapsed giant star that has run out of fuel. Matter and light cannot escape the intense gravitational pull of a black hole, the weight of which is estimated at a million times as much as the sun. • Old-fashioned black licorice gets its flavor from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, a legume related to beans. But the candy’s color comes from the addition of molasses to the batch, not from the licorice plant’s extract. • There was the “Man in Black” and there were “Men in Black.” Country music icon Johnny Cash earned his nickname by wearing his trademark black clothing, including a long knee-length coat, differing from his country counterparts who dazzled in rhinestone suits. Cash said he wrote his 1971 hit “Man in Black” on behalf of the “poor and beaten down” and “the prisoner who has long paid for his crime,” as well as soldiers killed in Vietnam, “the lives that could have been.” But initially, Cash and his band mates wore black shirts because it was the only matching color shirt they all had! The first “Men in Black” movie premiered in 1997; it was a science fiction comedy about a secret agency that

monitors alien activity in New York City. Clint Eastwood was chosen to play the lead character, but after he turned it down, Tommy Lee Jones was put in the role opposite Will Smith. Smith didn’t want the role of “J,” but his wife talked him into taking it. A sequel came along in 2002, and MIB III opened in the spring of 2012. • More tea drinkers sip black tea than any other type; it equals 90 percent of total tea consumption. Although black, oolong, green and white teas all come from the same shrub, black tea is more oxidized than the other three. Green tea undergoes minimal oxidation during processing, and white tea is made with no fermentation whatsoever. White tea has the least caffeine, just 1 percent of what a cup of coffee contains. Black tea contains 20 percent of coffee’s caffeine. • If you’ve been denied a particular privilege or recognition, you’ve been blacklisted. The term also applies to those who have been rejected from work in a certain field, or one who has been ostracized from elite social circles. The word dates back to the 1600s, when England’s King Charles II compiled a list of 58 judges who had sentenced his father Charles I to death. When Charles II regained the throne 11 years later, 13 of those on his “blacklist” were executed, 25 were sentenced to life in prison, and the remainder escaped. • Some clubs hold secret ballots to determine whether an individual should be admitted. Those who vote against the person’s admittance “blackball” him. • If you’re bitten by a member of the Latrodectus genus, most likely you won’t die. Although the venom of the black widow spider is quite potent, it usually only results in muscle aches, nausea or difficulty breathing, although it can be fatal to small children. And the spiders generally bite only in self-defense, for example, when a person sits on them. The female, famous for consuming the male after mating, is more than twice the size of her mate and has venom three times more potent. She can grow up to about 1.5 inches (37 mm). Not every female will have the trademark red hourglass on the abdomen — Sometimes there are two red spots, sometimes no markings at all. The male can often exhibit the hourglass as well, although its marking is usually yellow or white.

Summer Fun With Seashore Shells Hunting for treasures at low tide along a favorite beach is one of life’s simple pleasures for tots, teens and adults alike. There’s so much to see, smell and discover in nature’s giant sandbox -scampering crabs, colorful seaweed, seagulls, jellyfish (they may sting you!) and all those shells. If you’re lucky, you’ll find lots and lots of shells to hand pick and bring back home for a lasting souvenir of the day. Here are some simple lessons and activities that you can do with your young kids and grandkids when you get home. For those who aren’t hitting one of the coasts this summer, look for bags or baskets full of shells at neighborhood tag sales and thrift stores. Some specialty toy and craft stores sell them, too. CLEAN If you have just collected shells at a beach, wash them in a bucket with mild detergent and set them out in the sun on a towel to dry. Use old toothbrushes to scrub the sand out of crevices. Let school-age kids try a science experiment with broken pieces. Place a piece in a jar and cover the piece with vinegar. Set overnight. Did it disappear? Explain that shells are composed of calcium carbonate. The acid in the vinegar dissolves the compound. EXAMINE Sort them by type in piles, and find their names online or in a field guide. Challenge your preschooler to arrange the shells from each pile in rows from largest to smallest. Talk about how the surfaces feel and use adjectives to describe colors and features. Use a magnifying glass to observe details. You might be surprised to discover the colors of the rainbow inside some. Abalone shells have brilliant, rainbow-like hues. PUT SEASHELLS ON DISPLAY Create a bowl full of memories, and keep it on an end table or on the center of your dining-room table for everyone to see. For a dramatic display, use a large, low pasta serving dish with edges. Fill it half-full with clean sand, and arrange shells and other favorite mini seashore finds on top. Set flat shells such as scallops or clams upright in the sand. For added attractions, tuck in a travel postcard, a trip photo in a small Lucite frame and a tiny sailboat or other purchase from a souvenir shop.

Page 4 For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call Tidbits® of Baldwin County (251) 229-4519 • July 25, 2012 When Rain Barrels Violate HOA Rules Q: I keep a very nice lawn in the front and back of my house, along with a small kitchen garden and several flowers and shrubs. To water it -- especially in this dry, hot summer -- I try to use “gray” water as well as water collected in rain barrels placed under my downspouts. Recently I received a notice from my homeowners’ association that the rain barrels are against the rules and will have to be removed. How can I convince them that these are not just environmentally friendly, but also the reason I’m able to keep my yard green and growing as required by the HOA rules? -- Red-Taped in Roswell, Ga. A: While I’m not an expert in dealing with homeowners’ associations, my first thought would be that you should review the most recent copy of your HOA’s rules. You’ll want to find out what rule or rules the association is referring to, and if rain barrels are specifically mentioned. You’ll also want to find out what your rights are as a member of the HOA, how you can appeal the notice, how long you have to comply and whether you can get that deadline extended. Several years ago, a friend of mine renting in a townhouse community related a story to me. The condo association only allowed owners to be members, not renters. And it had set up, early in the community’s history, rules that only owners could access the community amenities like the pool and clubhouse. The trouble was, more than 80 percent of the residents were renters -- meaning very few actual residents could use those amenities. My friend took action, attending association meetings every month and speaking each month, until she convinced the association to vote on whether to allow renters to use the amenities. The vote passed easily. I’m relating the above story as an example of what can be accomplished through persistence when it comes to these associations. Talk directly to the HOA, and talk with members of your community about the rain-barrel issue. What’s really bothering the association about your rain barrels? Is it an aesthetic issue? Is it worried about mosquitoes hatching in the rain barrels? There are solutions to the problem -- such as moving the rain barrels out of sight of the street, camouflaging them behind shrubbery and covering the barrels to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. Get out the word, too, about the environmental benefits of using rainwater, as well as the cost savings from doing so. Chances are many homeowners will agree with you -- but not if they don’t know about the issue. HOME TIP: HOAs can be either a headache or a boon to homeowners. Be aware of your HOA’s rules and bylaws, and be a participant in the association to advocate effectively for changes or improvements to your community.

When I first heard the news item, I was outraged: Over the course of three days, 75 American flags were stolen from a veterans cemetery. Upon further investigation, I was chuckling ... almost. In New York, in the Civil War section of the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, flags had gone missing, and people were justifiable angry. Only the flag portions were missing, not the wooden poles, which remained pushed into the ground. The latest theft was discovered just hours after a meeting of local officials, veterans and police to address the topic of stolen flags -- because it had happened before at the same cemetery. Something had to be done. Upon learning of the new damage, police set up cameras to attempt to nail the culprit in the flag thefts. What they found on the video had them scratching their heads: A woodchuck, also knows as a groundhog, was seen pulling down the flags and hauling them away, minus the wooden pole. Extending the investigation, police used a special camera to go down into the burrows and tunnels the woodchucks had dug, and sure enough, there were remnants of the flags, used as bedding. A look around the Internet reveals that woodchucks have been notorious for stealing flags (and flower arrangements) in cemeteries. In Bernville, Pa., woodchucks stole 40 flags -- in 2005. So it’s been going on for a long time. It’s suspected that there’s a chemical put into the flags that attracts the woodchucks. While the loss of the flags is good news for flag manufacturers, who will no doubt benefit from additional flag orders, they need to do the patriotic thing and change that chemical. Perhaps the addition of mint or another scent will deter the varmints from snatching flags.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A strong social whirl brings a new round of good times to fun-loving Rams and Ewes. Cupid also is busy aiming arrows at single Lambs hoping for a heart-to-heart encounter. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A romantic incident could take a more serious turn if the Divine Bovine considers meeting Cupid’s challenge. Meanwhile, a professional opportunity is also about to turn up. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A bit of hardheaded realism could be just what the Twins need at this emotionally challenged time. Face the facts as they are, not as you want them to be. Good luck. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Many opportunities open up. But you need to be aware of their actual pros and cons. Check them all out and make your choice from those that offer more of what you seek. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A more stable situation begins, allowing you to feel more secure about making important decisions. Meanwhile, be sure to meet your project deadline so you can move on to other things. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. A new personal relationship thrives as you learn how to make room in your busy life for this wonderfully warm and exciting emotional experience. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A new contact opens some doors. That’s the good news. But there’s a caution involved: Be sure you protect your rights to your work before showing it to anyone. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A former colleague might seek to resume a working partnership. Ask yourself if you need it. If yes, get more information. If no, respectfully decline the request. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Good times dominate your aspect. So why not have a party to celebrate a loved one’s success? And do invite that special person you want to know better. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The shy side of the Sea Goat soon gives way to your more assertive self. This should help you when it comes time to speak up for yourself and your achievements. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new period of stability will help you deal with some recently reworked plans. Once you get your current task done, you can devote more time to personal matters. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Things are finally much more stable these days, so you can restart the process of meeting your well-planned goals with fewer chances of interruption or delay. BORN THIS WEEK: You love being the brightest light wherever you are, and people love basking in your warmth and charm.

For customers I recommend and Install Microsoft Products. Platforms such as Windows Server 2008 R2, SQL Server, Windows 7 have more support and stability for the Business Environment. For my personal use I am moving more and more to the world of Open Source. That is why I choose Android for the operating system on my smartphone. I love it. The capability it provides to me in my business is awesome. However the more I use it I found that it started slowing down and battery time was growing shorter and shorter. This is being caused by applications that I use. When I check for email, look at Facebook or open my Browser and then close them, it keeps running in the background as a service just in case I want to use it again. Over time these services use up resources and battery power. I can reboot my phone but this is big hassle. I have come to rely on an app called Task Manger to help keep my phone running with any semblance of battery life or responsiveness. . The newer phones come with this app and it works great. I have set most of the apps so they quit running two minutes after my display times out. If you have an older Android you will need to use a third-party tool to have the ability to schedule the killing of tasks. You can do a search on the Internet for an article that reviews Android third party Task Managers and where to get them.

The 100 Million Dollar Man If you believe in capitalism, you know that you pay what the market will bear. In New Orleans -- particularly after Friday, July 13, 2012 -- the market has spoken. Drew Brees, 33, the record-setting signal caller for the New Orleans Saints, signed a five-year contract that afternoon that will pay him $100 million. That’s a record, too. According to the NFL, $60 million is guaranteed and it came with a $37 million signing bonus. Next season he will earn $40 million all told. According to Forbes, the Saints’ average ticket prices and their resale value make them the most sought after ticket in the NFL. Put another way, with an average ticket price of $79 at the Superdome, if the team sells out every game, almost every dollar from the box office would go into his pocket. That’s a lot of escarole. In a radio interview with former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, Brees admitted it was a lot of money, but assured listeners that it was a business deal, pure and simple. “I can tell you from the start of this negotiation, I have not once thought ‘Hey, I want to be the highest-paid guy.’ In the end, did the contract end up being that? Yes, but it was more about trying to objectively look at the numbers from the last decade for a top-tier quarterback ... and just trying to do what’s fair and justified.” Brees played on a single year’s contract last season and came within four points of going to the NFC Championship game. In other seasons he averaged $6 million per year -- still a lot but not nearly what he was worth. He considered last season an act of faith on his part. Fans might be skeptical -- every team has been burned by a player coming off of a career year. Still, it was some year. He set NFL single-season records with 468 completions, 5,476 yards passing and a 71.2 completion percentage. The Saints set a record for total offense and led the league in home attendance, where they went undefeated. New Orleans, despite its outlandish partying reputation, is actually a pretty blue-collar town. And Brees is the kind of guy you see walking around eating a sandwich in New Orleans (he owns a sandwich shop there) or pumping his own gas (as reported by TMZ on an apparently slow paparazzi day). He’s a self-avowed family man who just happened to win a Super Bowl. “I think it’s very easy to sit back and say ‘this is ridiculous,’” Brees admitted. “[But] I feel like with a contract like this, people can say ‘they are paying you what you earned or what you deserved.’ ... It’s just about representing our team and city the right way.”

Sometimes you come across a shot during a game of golf where you really want to stop the ball and bring it back toward the cup. Perhaps there is a bunker ahead of the hole or a steep bank. Adding spin to your wedge shots will help you avoid these deadly traps and give you more confidence to attack those difficult pin positions. Read on to find out the simple steps you can take to create a great spin shot. Creating spin is very much to do with utilizing the grooves on the clubface. The ball needs to scrunch into these grooves and then pop out - if you’ve ever wondered what the grooves are for now you know. If there was a smooth face there is little chance that you could create any more spin than would naturally occur from your angle of attack. To ensure you get full use of this feature on your golf clubs and particularly the wedge make sure that the clubface is clean before you go out and play. Any debris left over from previous rounds will dampen the groove effect. You can purchase special brushes from your pro shop. The golf ball you use can have a significant effect on the amount of spin you can produce. Again, we are looking at the science of it all here. For the ball to compress into the clubface and make use of those grooves it needs to be slightly softer. There are many types of golf ball on the market and you generally have a straight choice between hard and soft. Hard allows more distance and soft gives you greater control. For the pros a softer ball is preferable because they know they can blast the ball far anyway. In any case an old worn out ball or one of poor quality will severely reduce your chances of creating spin. Look for a good ball and if in doubt ask in your pro shop for good quality softer balls. But beware - if you naturally have a very quick swing then you may end up spinning the ball too much if you opt for softer balls. The actual swing requires a steeper approach and hitting the ball before you hit the ground. It is at this moment on impact where you are really scrunching the ball into the clubface and ground ready for it to pop out as you swing through. Have a slightly open stance and set up with your hands ahead of the ball. The ball should be no further than the middle of your stance and moving it back may be even more beneficial as you want to be coming in at a steeper angle than usual. Ensure that your weight is over your front foot and your upper body is leaning slightly toward the target. If you don’t have a very quick swing try and up your normal tempo. Don’t force the issue as you could end up topping the ball but a quicker spin will really increase the rotation of the ball in the air. It is this level of rotation that will determine how much the ball sticks when it finally hits the surface of the green and if there will be any movement backwards. As you swing through the ball bring the whole of your body round - this technique is not all arms. This exaggerated effect helps increase the swing speed into the ball, which is what you want. Finally, observe how the greens are. The fact is that if the greens are very soft then you will not get too much spin on the ball. A more forgiving surface will just suck up all of the momentum. Much harder surfaces will not do this and you will have a greater probability of moving the golf ball once it gets to the green. Spinning the ball is not as mystical as it may seem. It has a bit to do with equipment and maintenance, a bit to do with conditions and a bit more to do with your set up to the ball. Keep it simple and you will see the rewards when a pin is tucked in a tight corner and you really want to attack it.

Brown Widow Spiders The most identifying features of these spiders are the widow hourglass and spiky egg sacks. Their colors can range from light tan to nearly black, with an hourglass in varying shades of orange. Many times they resemble a harmless house spider. The best way to know if it’s a brown widow is to see the distinctive hourglass on the abdomen, though that can be difficult to manage if they’re alive. The brown widow’s egg sack will always have spiky protrusions and the mother is usually nearby, lurking behind her messy web. They tend to stay outdoors but prefer areas fairly close to humans. They don’t like to bite people but will if in close contact. They may protect their eggs if threatened, but usually end up running for cover. They are venomous spiders but don’t deliver as much venom per bite as their black widow cousins. There have been very few instances of severe reactions to the bite. Some people have taken up hunting these prolific breeders to try and reduce the ever growing population. Wear protective gloves when searching for this spider. Use a longer item (like a stick) to remove the egg sacks and stomp them. Then you want to kill the maker of these eggs by directly spraying them with a pesticide for spiders which can be found at Household Termite & Pest Control’s Do It Yourself Store. Beware, they will play dead, so once they’re on the ground, step on them! Then clear away the messy webbing carefully as the mommy’s will hide under them. Always check the children’s outside toys, patio furniture, and debris piles. I have also encountered them in mailboxes, under stairs, firewood stacks, handle of garbage cans and in the grooves of eaves. The key is to be aware of their presence. Take time to examine suspicious places they may be hiding and where you find 1 egg sack, there are probably multiple brown widows in that area. If you suspect that your child has been bitten and the site hurts, take them to the doctor as a precaution. It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Contact a local professional if you feel the problem is beyond your control. Happy Hunting!
