by Blue Sullivan America is a country full of would-be inventors. For most, it’s as simple as discovering a problem that no one’s ever solved and coming up with a creative and inexpensive solution. Here are just a few of the countless TV marvels that have been advertised on our sets since this phenomenon began. • A good example of the whole “discover a problem, discover a solution” method of inventing is the “Snap-It Screw.” It’s a method of replacing the tiny, and difficult to handle, screws that hold eyeglasses together. • The “Snap-It Screw” was invented by Nancy Tedeschi. “The old saying that necessity is the mother of inventions is what inspired [it],” said Tedeschi. She meant it literally, as it was her own mother who inspired the invention’s creation.

High-Tech Learning Some of us have to wait until our grandchildren show up to teach us how to use a new high-tech device or navigate a social-media site online. But we could learn it for ourselves with a bit of instruction. With that in mind, AARP has created a series of how-to books to lead us step by step through some of the things that interest us. Here is a sample of what they offer for seniors: iPad: Tech to Connect, Pinterest for Dummies, Genealogy Online, Facebook, Tablets, Excel 2010, Outlook 2010, Laptops for Dummies, Word 2010, e-Readers and more. If you want to look at all the books, go online to bookstore.aarp.org. Click on a topic of interest, but look at Technology to learn more about the books above. Other categories include food and cooking, money, health, travel, self-help and some excellent home and family selections. You’ll find e-books, if you prefer, if you have a Kindle or Nook, print books and even free downloads. You don’t order the books through AARP -- instead they come from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, BooksA-Million or Indie Bound. Another site with technology books for seniors is Visual Steps [www.visualsteps.com]. Here is a small sample of what it offers: iPad for Seniors, Social Media for Seniors, Google for Seniors, Internet and Email with Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Microsoft office 2010 and 2007, Photo and Video Editing and so much more. Senior Sleuth Guides [www.sleuthguides.com] has a free book that’s worth reading, “The Senior Sleuth’s Guide to Technology.” It covers topics such as home computers, the Internet, health and medication, independent living, communication and travel. It provides a good overview if you want a place to start learning more.

Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are fork-tender. Drain; cool slightly. 2. Meanwhile, in large serving bowl, combine vinegar, sugar, mustard, pepper and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. 3. When potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut each into quarters or eighths if large. Add warm potatoes to dressing in bowl; gently stir with rubber spatula until well-coated. Let potato mixture stand 30 minutes to absorb dressing, stirring occasionally. 4. Gently stir mayonnaise and celery into potato mixture until evenly coated. For Any and All Distribution Needs or Questions Please Call (251) 229-4519 • Aug 29 - Sept 5, 2012 • Tedeschi’s mother was overseas doing volunteer work when a hinge screw in her glasses broke. Left with no other immediate remedy, Tedeschi’s mother pulled the pin out of one of her earrings and placed it where the former hinge had been. • “She wore this dangling bead from the hinge of her glasses for about a year. She traveled to several foreign countries with it in, and people would literally stop her on the streets and ask her where she got this charm,” said Tedeschi. “My mom came to me and said, ‘You have to invent charms for glasses.’” • For Tedeschi, inventing the “Snap-It Screw” was the easy part. The difficult part was doing all the things necessary to produce and market her new invention. She had to set up patents all over the world. She had to set up a factory in China and a warehouse in Seattle, Washington. She had to spend countless hours marketing her idea to retailers. Today, the “Snap-It Screw” is a success, and Tedeschi says that despite all the hard work, she wouldn’t change a thing. • “Bling To Go” was invented by Abby Appelt during a period where she was forced to use crutches. She felt the dull metal could use a little pizzazz. So she created some decorative wrap-on decals to give her crutches some personality, and her invention was born. • Appelt said, “When I wore my crutch décor, I had people stop me, literally everywhere I went, complimenting me on how awesome my crutches were!” • As Appelt notes, people decorate a million different things with stickers, so it made sense to do likewise with crutches. • “Bling To Go” works on crutches, canes, walkers and bed poles. It’s a medical grade product that can be sanitized and cleaned, so it presents no health hazard to the user. The company’s slogan is “express your health,” and they back up their words by being active contributors to several physical and emotional health charities. • Perhaps one of the more peculiar and innovative creations making the invention circuit is the “Bogdon Bass.” It’s a standing bass guitar whose main component is a cardboard box! • The “Bogdon Bass” is literally a large cardboard box sealed with tape, with a wooden neck and vinyl strings. It can be played with or without an amplifier. Because of the use of these materials, it is lightweight, inexpensive and recyclable. • This peculiar instrument was invented by a man named Chris Badynee. He named the instrument after his father, Bogdon. • “The inspiration to make my Bogdon Box Bass was that I had the desire to own something that I couldn’t afford, so I made one myself,” explained Badynee. “All I wanted was a natural-sounding upright bass for my own home recordings of songs I wrote.”

• After assembling what he thought was just a silly idea only he’d use, Badynee was shocked by how good the makeshift instrument sounded. “[It] sounded so fantastic that I had to tell someone. So I filmed a 60-second video and posted it on the web. I got 1,000 hits on Youtube in less than a day.” • The video became a bit of a viral sensation, and Badynee was asked by “Good Morning, America” for the right to show the video on their program. • Almost immediately after the video was shown on television, Badynee received requests to buy a “Bogdon Box.” He brought in his uncle and a couple of acoustic technicians to help him perfect it. Once they got the instrument exactly right, they began selling it on Ebay to a huge response. Hundreds were sold, almost as quickly as they could turn them out. • Badynee took the profits from those sales to protect and patent his invention. Eventually, his belief in his invention paid off in praise, when his bass was given a rave review in “Bass Player Magazine.” • A well-known invention marketed via television infomercials is the Snuggie. This blanket with sleeves solved a problem most people didn’t even know they had. • Since it covers your entire body but keeps your hands free thanks to its armholes, Snuggie wearers stay warm while still retaining the ability to take sip of their drink, change the channel or turn the page of a book. • The Snuggie was introduced in 2008 and was an instant success. By 2009, 20 million Snuggies had been sold. But there was actually a similar product already on the market, The Slanket, invented by Gary Clegg when he was a college freshman. • Because it is difficult to patent a textile product, Clegg had not patented The Slanket, so the makers of the Snuggie were able to make and market their product legally. • Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it’s a safe bet that Clegg felt something other than pride when he first saw the Snuggie.

Backyard Summer Olympics

Share the spirit of the 2012 Olympic Games by testing your own athletic skills and sportsmanship with a mini Olympics in a park or your backyard. Invite friends, neighbors and cousins to join in. Start by selecting several “events” to include in your summer games. If your kids enjoyed a favorite race or athletic competition in youth programs or camp, encourage them to teach it to the group. Be creative so that all abilities can be included in the spirited fun. Here are some ideas as participants “go for the gold.” On your mark. Get set. Go! Relay races Before you begin, tell the kids that the Olympic Torch Relay is a variation of relay races. Lighted on May 10, 2012, in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Flame was carried and passed along by torch bearers until it eventually reached London for the official start of the 2012 Olympic Games. A traditional relay race is done with teams of two or more people. It’s a great lesson in teamwork, because all members must work together to finish. Place two sets of “bases” at either end of the yard as markers for your race. Give one member of each team a balloon, which has to be patted into the air continually as the runner goes down the yard, around the far base and back to the starting base. On return, the balloon is patted to the next player, who repeats the activity until everyone has had a turn.

Running and swimming Let judges watch as kids and their friends do a quick dash across the yard or a lap across a pool. Make time cards, and hold them up for each competitor, just like the real Olympics. Jumping Place a flat marker in the middle of the yard. Each competitor should get a running start and jump from the marker. Before the athlete moves from the landing spot, a designated judge should measure the distance from the marker to where the athlete landed. Scores can be given based on how far past the marker the person jumped. Creative events --Give hula hoops a whirl and see how long participants can hula-hoop or how many they can keep going at one time. --See who can throw a paper airplane or wiffleball the farthest. Share the gold Make paper gold medals for special awards. Giving children praise for hard work, good behavior and sportsmanship helps them view themselves in a positive way.

The Affordable One-Day Denture Service on the Gulf Coast Dentures and Extractions in One Day!

Camp Lejeune Claims Get Green Light Fifteen presumptive illnesses are now covered for those who served at Camp Lejeune, N.C. The problem at Camp Lejeune was the drinking water. From the 1950s to the 1980s, the water contained volatile organic solvents (trichloroethylene, or TCE; tetrachloroethylene, or PCE; vinyl chloride) and benzene (a component of fuel), which are carcinogens. For years the Department of Veterans Affairs denied claims for subsequent cancers and other illnesses. For a short time, claims were decided on a case-bycase basis, but getting benefits wasn’t easy because it required proving the link between drinking the water so long ago and illness. Now not only will veterans be covered, but their families will as well. The devil is in the details, however. Family members will only be eligible for reimbursement for previous care after they have “exhausted without success all claims ... against a third party.” Veterans who served at Camp Lejeune for not less than 30 days are covered for the following illnesses: esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, myleodysplasic syndromes, renal toxicity, hepatic steatosis, female infertility, miscarriage, scleroderma, neurobehavioral effects and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Sen. Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has released 8,000 documents related to the water contamination at Camp Lejeune. The link to those documents is: www.judiciary.senate. gov/CampLejeuneIndex.htm. Your best bet is to read them side by side with an excellent explanatory page done by Mike Partain for The Few, The Proud, The Forgotten website: tftptf. com, then click MCBLC Timeline of Events, then scroll to Partain’s link. You’ll be dismayed by what you read. However, the good news is that we now have benefits for presumptive illnesses caused by service at Camp Lejeune. The shame of it all is that the government has known for many years that those wells were contaminated.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You feel obligated to return a favor. (Of course, you do.) But heed advice from those close to you and do nothing until you know for sure what’s being asked of you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your loving reassurance helped revive a once-moribund relationship. But be wary of someone who might try to do something negative to reverse this positive turn of events. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a wonderful matchmaker who can bring people together to form long-lasting relationships.

So what did we learn? 1. Sorry USC, but Alabama is No. 1: I was like a lot of people when I assessed Alabama for 2012. The defense lost seven starters and six of them are in the NFL. The replacements would all be very talented, but I thought it would take a while for the defense to jell. Trent Richardson, the Heisman finalist, was gone. The schedule included road trips to LSU, Arkansas andTennessee, where the Crimson Tide was going to face pretty good quarterbacks. And then there was the whole issue of Alabama staying hungry after a national championship season. For all those seemingly logical reasons my preseason top three was LSU, Southern California and Alabama. But after watching Alabama dismantle No. 8 Michigan, the Big Ten standard bearer, with a machine-like efficiency that bordered on scary, the Crimson Tide has to be No. 1 until somebody beats them. They go to Arkansas on Sept. 15, and if Alabama wins in Fayetteville you can mark this down: Nick Saban’s bunch will be 8-0 when they visit LSU on Nov. 3. 2. Nick Saban is the best coach in college football, but Chris Petersen is not far behind: There is no way Boise State is supposed to go to Michigan State and be in a position to win the game in the final quarter. Boise played its first game in four years without quarterback Kellen Moore, the sport’s all-time winner. The Broncos were replacing nine starters on defense. Meanwhile, Michigan State was without starting quarterback Kirk Cousins, but the Spartans returned nine starters from what was the No. 6 defense in the nation a year ago. Still, Boise State led 13-10 going into the fourth quarter before the Broncos finally wore down under the pounding of Michigan State’s Le’Veon Bell, losing 17-13. Boise State’s only touchdown came on an interception return, but still the Broncos had a chance before their final drive was stopped with 6:32 left. That’s coaching and that’s why Petersen is 73-7 as he begins his seventh year as a head coach. Boise will now run the table and win the Mountain West. Then the Broncos will be favored to win the Big East when they join in 2013. 3. The SEC has some new superstars waiting in the wings: Here are just three to announce their presence this weekend. • WR Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee: The junior college transfer from Rock Hill, S.C. was rated as the No. 1 juco player in the country last season. His second catch for Tennessee went 41 yards for a touchdown and he beat N.C. State’s David Amerson, an All-America cornerback, to do it. Later in the game he ran 67 yards for a touchdown. This guy is a difference maker. • RB Todd Gurley, Georgia: The freshman from Tarboro, N.C., was one of the most highly-recruited players in the South and, along with fellow freshman Keith Marshall, was a reason Georgia felt it could say goodbye to problem child Isaiah Crowell, the SEC freshman of the year in 2011. Gurley touched the ball 10 times in the opener withBuffalo and had 227 total yards. That figure included a 55-yard run for a touchdown and a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. • RB T.J. Yeldon, Alabama: Mark Ingram won the Heisman Trophy in 2009. Trent Richardson was a finalist in 2011. Yeldon, from Daphne, Ala., will pay his dues behind Eddie Lacy this season but is destined to be Alabama’s next great running back. He had 111 yards on 11 carries in his first college game against Michigan. 4. When the four-team playoff arrives, quality neutral-site games will be more popular than ever: Alabama and Michigan headlined at Jerry’s World, but don’t forget Auburn-Clemson and North Carolina State-Tennessee in Atlanta. In an opening weekend filled with a lot of cupcake games, these three added a lot of spice and a lot of interest. And when we get to a four-team playoff in 2014 and strength of schedule becomes a major factor considered by the selection committee, I predict that a lot of teams are going to take another look into playing quality neutral site games to open the season. They pay well, and even if you lose you have time to play your way back into the national championship race. And if the selection committee has to choose between a couple of worthy teams for the final spot in the playoffs, a neutral site game against a strong opponent could be the tiebreaker. “We’ve heard from a number of schools about our games,” said Gary Stokan, president of the Chick-fil-A Bowl, which put on the double-header in Atlanta. “It’s going to be different when a selection committee picks the teams instead of the polls.” Nick Saban of Alabama certainly believes in these games. Saturday’s showdown with Michigan marked the third time in the past five seasons that he has opened the season with a neutral site game against a BCS opponent. Saban has already agreed to play Virginia Tech in Atlanta in 2013 and West Virginia in Atlanta in 2014. 5. It’s time to cut back on the “money games”: Nobody made Savannah State, a struggling FCS program that went 1-10 last season, schedule back-to-back road games with Oklahoma State and Florida State. Of course Savannah State did it for the money. It received $385,000 for playing at Oklahoma State and will get another $475,000 for going to Tallahassee on Saturday. And, to be fair, the reason Florida State needed to buy a game is that West Virginia bailed out on the Seminoles when it joined the Big 12. Florida State had to have a game and Savannah State has bills to pay. “We’re going to have to readdress that,” Savannah State coach Steve Davenport told reporters after the game. “You get paid for certain things but I don’t know if at the end of the day, some things are worth the payments you get.” You mean, like getting your football team really beat up for two good paydays? How about this? How about we just make the kids play in one of these money games a year? I’m sure these are great trips for the Savannah State players but 84-0 is not what they signed up for. Dressing to Win Your Golf Game By: Jimmy Bonner Golf is about patience, vision, and what you wear. That’s right, what you wear can have a major effect on your game. Golf is a unique game that doesn’t always spell out a specific dress uniform for golfers, but if you aren’t thinking about what to wear your game can suffer. Included below are some tips for golfers of any age, and a ability to improve their game by selectively choosing what they wear.

Starting at the top of the body, wearing a hat has become acceptable in golf. In the 1980’s it was visors, in the 1990’s it was hats, and in the 2000’s it’s all about hats. Tiger Woods made a statement by always wearing his signature Nike hat, and it’s not just for style. Hats can help block out the sun, which can help you improve your shot. Hats are also good was to keep your eyes confined from other players. Got a secret putting trick that you do with your eyes? Now you don’t need to let others see it, because your hat obstructs their view. Hats also can help on colder days by keeping the head warm. When the temperature drops many golfers lose their focus, by wearing your hat and keeping your head warm, your focus can always be on the game.

Golf requires a collard shirt that is as far as many clubs will instruct you what to wear. While it is important to wear a collard shirt for requirement reasons, it is also important to be selective in the shirt you select. The number one thing for golfers to consider when purchasing a golf shirt is the room it offers in the shoulders. As most experience golfers will tell you most of the swing is in the shoulders. If you are wearing a golf shirt that obstructs this part of your swing, you can be in for a long day. Conversely golfers do not want to wear baggy shirts that may also interfere with their game. Choose a comfortable shirt that will fit normal.

Pants are also required on the course for gentlemen. Your pants should have pockets. This may sound elementary, but many a golfer has left the store mad because they don’t have pockets. You’ll need pockets for your score card, tees, wallet, and what ever else you choose to bring. Be sure to purchase pants that are light weight and made of a material that won’t irate you in the sun. For example pick light weight cotton versus a wool pant. Pants also should be a comfortable fit.

Shoes in golf maybe the most important article you wear to the course. For maximum tread you need to purchase soft spiked golf shoes. These are the shoes that have soft rubber spikes naturally built into the shoe, not the metal kind. Shoes should be comfortable, and fit very well. Fit is especially important in golf because if you walk the course in shoes that don’t fit, your feet will develop blisters. Blisters can distract you from your game, and put you in the rough quick.

Overall your golf clothing choices should reflect thought, and have a theme of comfort. You want to be able to perform your best, but if you’re just picking things out of the closet you may end up playing worse than you could with some golf specific gear.

Fleas We usually think of fleas as a dog or cat problem. However, they also bite humans and are transported by wildlife and rodents. Fleas can cause anemia, tapeworms and allergic reactions in domestic pets. Not to mention the itchy red bumps we humans have to deal with when they feed on us! Fleas can also transmit diseases such as cat scratch fever, which is administered through a bite or scratch of an infected cat, murine typhus which has mild symptoms that go away on their own and the plague, which is rare but does affect a few people annually. Adult fleas lay their eggs on a host which can then roll off onto other surfaces. They can be hard to find since they are so small and very fast. They also breed at a rapid rate (around 20 eggs per day), and can hatch in as little as 2-14 days! So an infestation can occur quickly if precautions are not taken. An adult flea can go a couple of months without a blood meal, while the pupae can wait up to a year to feed (yikes!). Once they’ve made your home their home it takes a lot more work to rid yourselves of these irritating parasites. Here are some steps to take in order to prevent infestations: Treat your pets with an EPA approved product such as Frontline, Advantix or natural product and bathe them regularly with Dawn dishwashing liquid (kills on contact) or a flea and tick shampoo. Check them if they are scratching excessively or if they have skin irritations as these could be signs of flea bites. Keep your home clean, vacuuming floors and furniture frequently to remove eggs, pupae and fleas. Remove the bag or empty the canister prior to bringing the vacuum cleaner back in the house. You don’t want to bring them back in! Cut grass regularly and remove food sources close to home to deter rodents, as they are flea carriers. If you have a rodent problem, resolve it right away to avoid the fleas that follow. Wash pet bedding, collars, plush toys and blankets pets use regularly and treat their favorite areas with a product that’s safe for them and your family. Natural products such as diatomaceous earth, nemotodes (live organisms that feed on fleas and other insects), and insect growth regulators can break the life cycle of fleas and keep infestations down. Household’s Do It Yourself Store carries many products you need to control and prevent fleas in your home. If you have an unacceptable amount of flea activity, schedule a visit with a professional immediately.
