A team of determined volunteers have worked over the past several years to add an important historical piece of Baldwin County ’s heritage to the grounds at the Baldwin County Heritage Museum . The outside part of this structure is complete and the inside is display ready. Over the next few months volunteers and staff will work to set up a display of goods and equipment as a tribute to early General Stores in Baldwin County . The museum is looking for photos of early general stores, especially inside shots, from the area. Also on the wish list are items such as signs, containers, barrels, crates, sacks or supplies that came from any general store that once operated in the Baldwin County area before 1950. Volunteers are also needed to help move items already in the museum’s collection from the Main Building to the General Store. If you are able to help with any of these requests please contact the museum at 251-986-8375, email bchm@gulftel.com or mail PO Box 356 Elberta , AL 36530 . You can also visit the museum Wed-Sat 10am-3pm at 25521 US Hwy 98 E Elberta , AL 36530 . Admission is Free, donations are welcome and appreciated.

EVERYTHING IS UPSIDE DOWN I have often been contacted by people who wanted to tell me that something I had said or done had been a great blessing to them. Of course it is always gratifying and encouraging to hear those stories. But wait… there have also been quite a few failures and offenses and inconsistencies in my life. Many times I have wondered if the only real ministry I could ever have would be to serve as a bad example. Am I a great and effective leader and spokesman for truth and for God? Am I a gift to people, a blessing from above, a profound and thoughtful man of truth and faith and love and spirituality? Or am I a hypocrite, a shyster, a phony, unworthy and unqualified and unable to really help anybody? The truth is that I am human... which means that I am neither of these, but at times I can seem to be both of these. And here is the ironic, paradoxical thing, which I hope that I can explain without confusing anybody: When I think that I’m the good guy- that’s when I’m the bad guy. When I think that I’m the bad guy- then it is more likely I could be the good guy. If I start to think of myself as good and obedient and right and righteous... if I start to think of myself as “God’s gift to poor dumb sinners”... I am not the solution to anything. I am the problem. My arrogance will know no bounds. The people I hurt will be many. And I will think that all of them are wrong, but that I am right. Of course I don’t want to be like that. But it comes

pretty quickly on the heels of pride. On the other hand, if I can remember that I am just a messed up person... often weak, often wrong, often sinful and always unworthy, and if I can honestly and humbly remember that, then I can help somebody along the way. And I won’t even know that I’m doing it until I hear about it later. Steve Brown has often said, “The best thing you’ve got going for you spiritually is your sin... when you know about it. And the worst thing going against you spiritually is your obedience... when you know about it.” Saint Paul put it this way: “I glory in my weaknesses and failures and reproaches, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me- for when I am weak, only then am I strong.” The old spiritual song said it so well: “Not my brother, not my sister, but it’s me, oh Lord- standin’ in the need of prayer.” And Walt Kelly’s “Pogo” said, “we have come face-to-face with the enemy, and he is us!’ It should be no secret that nobody but nobody has a handle on the Almighty. If you have a God that you can totally understand and control, he is much too small to be the real thing. Some things will always be a mystery. Some things we will never get right. And as long as we live on this earth, there will be areas in which you and I will really fall on our face. Accept it. We’re not home yet. And until we really are home, we remain as fallen people in a fallen world, and most of the things about us and about our relationship with God are upside down

Page 21

from what we have always thought. Whenever I go through the Christian section of a book store, there are always many books on how to let God fix the difficulties of our lives. God is used as a fixer of all of our problems, a remover of the obstacles, an automatic cure for whatever bothers us, and a very good servant who runs our errands. Here’s a radical thought: What if He were the sovereign Lord over all? What if He actually wanted us to live for His glory? What if He knew that I could magnify His grace more beautifully if I sometimes failed in my great plans, and couldn’t always handle my problems? What if it really is all about Him instead of all about me? Do I get myself in trouble if I say that Jesus did not come to give us all the answers, or to fix our jobs or our marriages or our finances? Is it possible that He didn’t come to give me great success, or to help our football team to win, or even to make your church grow? Is it just totally preposterous to think that He didn’t come to lower taxes, to take over politics, or to fill the Supreme Court with conservatives or liberals? Could it be that He didn’t even come to “bless America”, or that He is not necessarily an American at all? What if He is really bigger than all of this, and we are just here to try to do his will and glorify his name? I know that’s a crazy thought. Excuse me... I don’t know what I was thinking. A Note From the Editor

What is the good, acceptable and perfect will of God? Lord, we want to know your perfect will. Help us to be diligent in getting in your word, for in it lies the answer to all things. There is something you have to surrender called self, your fleshly desires, then you can be obedient to God. You have to get the word in your mind before it can get into your heart. One way is to meditate on it, and get it stamped on your heart. Read it, digest it and speak it out loud. A writer once said he read the New Testament out loud on his knees, three times all the way through and he was never the same. He said revelations of God’s word became so clear. When reading his word, let your eyes see it, your mind comprehend it and then speak it out loud. Yes, see, comprehend and speak it out loud. The Bible says, “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.” When it gets stamped or rooted in your heart, abundance will come forth. You have heard the saying, ”You are what you eat.” This applies spiritually as well. Let us feed on the right kind of food for the body and spiritual food to know the perfect will of God.

He ran for mayor of Carmel, Calif. He defeated the incumbent mayor in a landslide, and he kept the position for two years. His salary? A whopping $200 per week. ¥ Often these days you’ll see someone carrying a tiny dog around with them, but you might be surprised to learn that this is not an entirely new fashion. In ancient Rome and Greece it was not uncommon for a noble lady to carry her tiny Maltese dog around in the sleeve of her robe. ¥ In the early days of motion pictures, Will H. Hays became known as the “Czar of Hollywood.” He presided over the earliest incarnation of the MPAA, charged with ensuring the morality of movies. Some of the changes the so-called “Hays Office” insisted upon were removing the image of a cow’s udder from a Walt Disney cartoon; and removing any direct reference to adultery in the 1935 adaptation of the Tolstoy novel “Anna Karenina” -- despite the fact that Anna’s affair is at the heart of the novel. ¥ Those who study such things say that a woman’s sense of smell tends to be better than that of a man. *** Thought for the Day: “I think that I am better than the people who are trying to reform me.” -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Page 20 For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call Tidbits® of Baldwin County (251) 229-4519 • September 12, 2012 ¥ Be sure to comb the leftovers from back-toschool sales. Pick up supplies that will need to be replenished as the school year moves on. Also, there are many imaginative pencil cases that can double as travel jewelry and makeup bags. Often you can pick up several at a good price. ¥ “Just after Labor Day, our family starts to think about who will host holiday dinners and such. We do it in a lottery. Whoever just hosted is exempt if they want to be. The rest of those who’d like to host a holiday event put their names in a pot and we pick out names. The events are the usuals, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, but also a cookie-making party and the children’s party. It’s better than one

person always having to do it, or always getting to do it.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts ¥ If you’re getting your outdoor furniture ready for storage, here’s a great cleaning idea. Load it all in the back of a truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and clean with the pressure hoses. Let dry and it’s ready. ¥ “Dust books with a vacuum assist! I put the leg of a panty hose over my vacuum wand and secure it tightly. Then I dust my bookshelves, holding the wand close by to suck up the dust that gets disturbed. It’s less messy, I think. I still dust from the top down.” -- L.K. in Ohio ¥ To make your own disinfecting wipes, cut paper towels into four squares each. Saturate with a half alcohol, half water mix and store in a plastic freezer bag or a diaper-wipe container. You can use these to clean telephones and doorknobs during cold and flu season.

The Baldwin Business Council invites Baldwin County business owners and representatives to our Fall Open House and Breakfast. Dear Business Professionals, The Baldwin Business Council is throwing a party, and you are invited! We are a group of diverse business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals who have learned that working as a team runs circles around trying to go it alone. We meet once a week and share ideas, give referrals and help each other grow our businesses. In just the past year we have passed more than 154 leads resulting in $160,000 in business within the group. There is a sense of camaraderie, accountability and laughter as we learn from each other, as well as from our special guest speakers. September 26 is going to be a great morning in our group for two reasons. First, we are inviting anyone who wants to promote and grow their business to visit our group and try it on for size. It’s a great way to meet other Eastern Shore professionals and learn what the BBC is all about. We’ll even toss in a free breakfast and a priceless view of our bay. Secondly, we have the privilege of hearing from noted speaker Lee Lawson, President and CEO for Baldwin County EDA We sincerely hope you consider putting this casual invite on your calendar. Our goal is network The Baldwin Business Council meets every Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. at the Lake Forest Yacht Club. Join us and network with other local business owners and representatives and learn the benefits of membership in this dynamic group. Join our team and grow your business one referral at a time!

with other professionals and looking for opportunities to help grow our businesses. If that sounds like something you could benefit from, consider yourself welcome. We hope to see you there! Carl Winners, President Baldwin Business Council Lawson previously served as vice president of economic development for the Baldwin County EDA from 2006 to 2008, during which time he was responsible for marketing and the recruitment of new jobs and corporate investments. Before accepting the position of president for the Baldwin County EDA, Lawson worked as an economic development representative for PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in Andalusia, Ala. During his time at PowerSouth, Lawson managed PowerSouth’s domestic and foreign economic development efforts for its 39 County Alabama service territory. Lawson has also held positions with the Jefferson County Economic and Industrial Development Authority in Birmingham and the Madison Chamber of Commerce in Madison, Ala. “Lee’s economic development experience and successful working relationships with local and national business leaders will be an asset to the future success of the Alliance. We are looking forward to having him as a part of our team” Joe Bullock, chairman of the EDA stated. Lawson is a native of Montgomery, Ala. and a 2003 graduate of Troy University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and public relations. Lawson is married to Regan Ware Lawson of Mobile, and is the father of three-year old Knox and one-year-old Greer.
