HIGHWAYS AND HEDGES We are living in a wonderful time when those of us who attend church are waking up to the truth that our service to God is not to be limited to what we do in and for our church. A truer test of our religion is what we do for poor and lonely and hungry and suffering people wherever we can help them. Some churches seem to exist only for their own self-preservation. Spirituality is defined as being faithful to attend all the services, support the building program, pay the minister, sing in the choir, and so on. Other people who don’t subscribe to their precise interpretations are considered to be “outsiders” who must be convinced to think exactly the way the insiders think. Ministerial success is defined by how many people they can get to assemble together. “Full-time Christian service” means church work, and you must be either a preacher or a music director or a youth minister or an evangelist for the church. Whatever else you do to serve God through your work or in your community is not really considered much of a ministry at all. It certainly is not worth mentioning in church if it isn’t directly linked to the programs of the church. In my opinion this is idolatrous, silly, and also very sad. But this is a wonderful time, because many who so long have slept safely in their pews are now waking up! A better way is emerging- one that is more realistic, more unselfish, more helpful, and (I believe) more Christian. I will share just a few examples:

Recently my son called me on a Sunday afternoon. “Dad, our church did something this morning that blew me away!” He then told of how the church had given every person an envelope, and in each envelope there was cash- anywhere from twenty to a hundred dollars. The leaders then told them to use this money to help someone in need. “It must be someone outside of your own family,” they added, “and do NOT put the money back into the church!” Well, that “blew me away” too! It does not matter that this particular church is not of my “denomination.” They have set a great example for all of us by teaching all of their people that every one of them can be used to bless other people. This same church also gives away over a thousand bicycles to poor children at Christmas. Another church in my town is building a medical clinic for those who can’t afford the prices at the hospitals and doctor’s offices. Patients are charged only what they can afford to pay, if anything. Generous and unselfish doctors (yes, there are some!) either discount or donate their services to help make it happen. What an awesome project and a great ministry this can be! Many of our churches (including where I attend) are involved in caring for the displaced families and homeless people of our area, and putting them up in the church’s facilities from time to time. Once a month we provide the best hamburgers you ever tasted for men from the half-way house, sharing a meal and ministry and fellowship with these our friends who were just released from jail. A church in Birmingham has had forty of their families sell their homes and move into the inner-city area for the purpose of living

Page 21

their lives among the poor! The greatest and most radical example of this that I have ever heard of is Shane Claiborne of Philadelphia. He, and several young couples just out of college have given up their desires for a lucrative career and chosen instead to live homeless lives in the ghetto. In his book “The Irresistible Revolution” he tells of people who come in as tourists from churches to observe what he is doing. When the church folks ask what their “outreach program” is, Shane answers, “It’s amazing! You guys just keep coming in here!” (Think about it.) I’m sure there are many other examples in your town and mine, where people from church are climbing out from those pews and pulpits to enter the world where they are called to tell and to show the love of God. A divine voice is calling us into the suburban subdivisions and the grimy ghettos, into the board rooms and the bar rooms, into every life wherever His grace can reach, which is, indeed, into every life. Nobody is too good, and nobody is too bad to be included. When we finally get to wherever we have been sent, we will find that He has been waiting for us. He was already there. It has been more than half a century since as a child I sang this song in Sunday school, but it goes, “In the highways, and the hedges, I’ll be somewhere a-listenin’ for my Lord!” I liked the song then, but I need it more now. And I really hope to see you somewhere in the highways and the hedges. [ Condensed from “Broken Roads to Grace” by Jim Lee. Forward

We need to go to God for everything—for wisdom, strength and guidance, but there comes a time when he says, ”Ok, go forward. You activate your faith, you say you believe me, show me your works with your faith.” Moses had prayed and then God told him to do something. “Speak to the children of Israel, he said. Lift up your rod and stretch forth your hand over the sea and divide it so the children of Israel can go on dry land through the midst of the sea.” What if Moses had just kept on praying and said, “No, Lord I’ll pray, you do it.” But God says, “ You pray and go forth and I will make the way. You are my vessel that I want to work through, now move, be obedient, go forward.” Do you feel trapped? Do you have a red sea facing you? It seems like an impossible situation? God can and will make a way for you when you are obedient and step forward. He tells us to ask and we will receive.
So pray in faith and believe by taking action. The answer often lies in the midst of your problem.

Dear Sir, I am glad to hear that you will go home. I have had a good time every day for your favor. I cannot thak you enough. I am sorry that I must be apant with you. wish you are my dear friend and my leader in a long time. Will you kindly give me a letter, after you go home. My address is following. Tsukada Nenokichi, 115 Takasago-machi, Adachi-kn, Tokyo , Japan Care of your health, Please give my compliment to your family. May you be happy. Your truly, Tsukada Nenokichi

This letter was written and given to Emil “Joe” Salzmann by a former Japanese Prisoner of WW II in Okinawa . When Joe was stationed in Okinawa during WW II he was in charge of the camp’s Radio Station, WXLH. One day a small group of prisoners were left in Joe’s charge to work and they were not cooperating. About ready to “kill em all”, Joe said something “bad” in German and one of the prisoners answered him back in German. They became friends. Nenokichi made a pencil sketch of Pauline (the pretty young thing that would be Joe’s wife and best friend for 61 years) from a small photo that Joe carried. This is one of the stories that the Baldwin County Heritage Museum has been able to collect and preserve for future generations. BCHM is located at 25521 Hwy 98 E, Elberta , AL 36530 . Hours of operation are 10am-3pm, Wednesday-Saturday. Admission is Free. For information about making a donation or becoming a member or volunteer stop by, call 251-986-8375, email bchm@gulftel.com or visit www.baldwincountyheritagemuseum. com. You can also find the museum on Facebook. All tax-free donations should be mailed to P.O. 356, Elberta, AL 36530 and will be acknowledged with our gratitude.
