TIDBITS® RIDES A ROLLER COASTER
iphone
www.originaloysterhouse.com
by Janet Spencer A team of seven people went to California in order to set the world record for the most roller coasters ridden in 24 hours. The group rode on 40 different roller coasters at eight different amusement parks in California, starting at 5:00 p.m. on October 14, 2000 and ending at 5:00 p.m. the next day. Come along with Tidbits as we ride the world’s tallest coaster! • From the days of the first roller coaster ride to today, a competition to build the tallest, longest, scariest roller coaster on earth has pushed the industry forward into new realms. In 2004, this competition spurred Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey to announce that they were building the highest and fastest roller coaster on earth. They named it Kingda Ka, after the 535-pound Bengal tiger who resides at the park, although some people joke that “Kingda Ka” is actually Swahili for “OhMyGawd what a ride!” • In 2005, Kingda Ka opened for business, claiming the title of both the fastest and the tallest roller coaster on the planet. The coaster cars rocket to the top of a 456foot tower, accelerating from 0 to 128 mph within 3.5 seconds, before a stomach-clenching cork-screw drop Turn To Page 3 For More!

Caramel-Nut Brownies
We tested this brownie recipe with several different brands of caramels and, to our surprise, had varying results. If you want the caramels in the baked brownie to be soft and gooey (our test kitchen’s preference), buy a brand that lists sweetened condensed milk as its first ingredient. If you prefer the caramels to be firm and chewy, buy a brand that lists corn syrup or glucose syrup first. 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter or margarine 4 ounces unsweetened chocolate 1 cup granulated sugar 1 cup packed light brown sugar 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup (25 to 30, depending on brand) individually wrapped caramels, each cut in half 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 13- by 9-inch metal baking pan. 2. In 3-quart saucepan, heat butter and chocolate over medium-low heat until melted, stirring frequently. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in sugars and eggs until well-mixed. Stir in flour, walnuts, vanilla and salt just until blended. Spread batter in pan; sprinkle with caramels. 3. Bake brownie 25 to 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from edge comes out almost clean. Cool brownie in pan on wire wrack. 4. When cool, cut brownie lengthwise into 4 strips; then cut each strip crosswise into 6 pieces. * Each serving: About 220 calories, 12g total fat (6g saturated), 43mg cholesterol, 140mg sodium, 28g carbohydrate, 1g fiber, 3g protein.

Page 3 Fat Cat
Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly Issues 44/45 November 07 & 14 of 2012 back down to earth. A second 13-story hill gives riders a few moments of weightlessness before the ride is over, less than 60 seconds after it began. • The secret to Kingda Ka’s thrill is all in the launch sequence. Whereas standard older roller coasters employ a cable system which slowly and laboriously winches a car to the top of a hill, the Kingda Ka uses space-age hydraulic engineering to launch a car in exactly the same sort of way an aircraft is launched from an aircraft carrier, with similar thrust and G-forces involved. The system is basically a high tech catapult, with a giant hydraulic launch system delivering 12,500 horsepower in a single colossal blast – twelve times the horse power of a Formula One race car. Eight military grade 500-horsepower hydraulic motors – which took a year to construct – charge up the accumulators, forcing hydraulic fluid into the chambers under great pressure. When a trigger is pulled, the pressure is released and the car is launched at rocket speed. It’s similar in many ways to blowing up a balloon and then letting it go. Kingda Ka is one of only two roller coasters in the world that uses this technology. The experience has been compared to being in a jet fighter, or being a drag racer. QUICK BITS • It takes only ten seconds to go from launch to being 456 feet in the air on top of the tower. • The highest point of the ride is 45 stories tall, which is about 4/5ths the height of the Washington Monument. It’s tall enough that the entire Statue of Liberty would fit under the main arch with 100 feet to spare. • On foggy days, you can’t see the top of the tower from the bottom. • The ride cost $25 million to construct. • The entire track is just over 1,000 yards long. • Fittingly enough, the very first passengers were the engineers who built it. • The braking system, done with magnetic fields generated by 473 magnets, means there’s no friction to wear parts out. It’s silent, efficient, and fail-safe. • The roller coaster has four cars, and each car seats 18 passengers. About 1,400 people per hour take the ride. BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE So where should you sit to get the best ride? Depends on what you’re looking for. Sitting in the very back of a coaster train yields the wildest ride since the last car is being pulled by the weight of the front cars, making for some nice whipping action, especially if they are long trains on steep hills. However, sitting in the front has benefits too. The very first car will hang over the first drop waiting for the rest of the cars to crest the hill before the big plunge. Front cars also have better low-G
moments when the train is going over the top of low hill, leading to better stomach-lifting airtime. The ride is usually smoothest in the middle of the train, a good spot for beginners. SAFETY CONCERNS • Two weeks after the grand opening, a bolt unexpectedly sheered off, damaging the brake system. Custom-made bolts were ordered and installed to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again. • In 2009, the roller coaster was struck by lighting in the middle of the night when the park was closed. It suffered serious damage and was closed for repairs. • Because it is so close to the Jersey Shore, the coaster is capable of withstanding hurricane force winds. Nevertheless, damage occurred during Hurricane Irene in 2011, and the ride was closed for repairs once again. • No one has ever been killed while riding the Kingda Ka. The odds of being injured on an amusement park ride are 1 in 23 million. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, in 1999 over 600,000 people were injured on bikes, just under 100,000 on trampolines, nearly 50,000 while using golf equipment, while 7,260 were injured on amusement park rides, and only 138 of those people needed to be hospitalized. Most injuries are due to people failing to follow rules rather than equipment failure. OUCH! Kingda Ka does not operate when it’s raining, because being hit by raindrops at 128 mph is not fun. G-FORCE FACTS Normal earth gravity has a g force of 1. Astronauts in orbit float around in zero g’s. Jet pilots black out at 10 g’s. On a roller coaster, g forces decrease on the way down a hill (making you feel lighter) and increase on the way up (making you feel heavier). At 3 g’s a 100-lb person feels like they weigh 300 lbs. On the way down a hill riders may feel 0 g’s, although most coasters only go down to about .2 g’s, making a 100-lb. person weigh 20 lbs. A typical roller coaster offers a maximum of 3.5 g’s. More than that makes the ride too much. That’s about the same g forces as astronauts feel during a space shuttle launch. Three coasters outside the U.S. generate over 6.5 g’s. ONE-UPPED Kingda Ka was the world’s fastest roller coaster until Formula Rossa opened in Abu Dhabi in November 2010, which reaches a speed of 150 mph, reaching that speed in 4.9 seconds following launch. The hydraulic launch system is identical to the one used on the Kingda Ka. However, Kingda Ka still retains the title of the world’s tallest roller coaster.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Frank” has been classified as obese by the veterinarian. Frank doesn’t look that fat, and he moves around fine and plays a lot. How can the vet call him obese? Trying to get him to exercise more doesn’t work, either. -- Susan J., Phoenix DEAR SUSAN: Cats, like people, sometimes put on weight so gradually that it’s the scale that sounds the first warning, rather than looks or lack of activity. Frank may not seem too fat, and he gets around just fine, but that good health won’t last if the weight stays on him. He has quite a bit in his favor. It sounds like Frank is a healthy cat who stays active. You can encourage this activity by increasing the amount of time you play with him -- if you dangle a cat toy in front of Frank for five minutes every hour so, increase that to 10 minutes each time. It’s also very important to follow the dietary guidelines set down by the veterinarian. Usually a pet diet involves reducing the amount of calories taken in each day. That means serving smaller portions at feeding time. Food treats must be avoided as well, so the extra calories don’t go straight to your cat’s midsection. Keeping Frank’s weight down now will help prolong not only his life, but the quality of that life. Being obese will eventually lead to a host of expensive health problems -- diet and exercise cost mostly time and patience.
Put Stamp on Fall With Real Apple Art Some of my kids’ best and least-expensive art supplies have come from nature. Acorns, leaves, shells, pinecones and sticks all have provided inspiration for a plethora of family craft and decorating projects. Now that apple season is here, it’s a perfect time to get your creative juices flowing and use real apples to stamp out some original art. You can stamp apple prints onto brown craft paper or recycled brown grocery bags for lovely homemade wrapping paper, gift tags and book covers. To create wearable art to celebrate fall, stamp apple prints with permanent acrylic fabric paints on a sweatshirt, T-shirt or cotton infant wear. Stamp fabric napkins, place mats, potholder and dish towels, too. There’s really no end to objects that can sport an apple stamp or two. Here’s the fun: Slice an apple in half vertically. Pat it dry with a towel and remove as much moisture as possible. For a handle that young kids can grab onto, poke a fork into the outside center of the apple. Pour craft paint in squeeze bottles onto a paper plate. (Use fabric paint if stamping clothing.) Dip the cut side of the apple into the paint. Press the apple gently on a paper towel to absorb some of the paint, and then press the apple firmly onto the paper or fabric. Stamp as many prints as you like by dipping and printing. When your apple prints are dry, dip a toothpick or small paintbrush into some green or brown paint and paint a slender stem and a leaf onto your apple print. Or, glue a real stem on a print or two for an original look! Notes: --For a group project, look for cheaper bruised fruit at apple orchards. --If you cut an apple widthwise around the circumference, the seeds form a perfect star shape. Remove the seeds and stamp out the natural design. --If using fabric paints on fabric, an adult should heat-set the prints with an iron according to product instructions after the paint has dried.

Women Vets Getting Better Health Care
The gap between the health care received by men and women veterans is closing. So says the Department of Veterans Affairs. According to its website, women’s health care through the Women Veterans Health Program focuses on a number of areas: Comprehensive primary care: The plan is to include gender-specific care at every VA site, including physical rehab, maternity care, acute and chronic illness, disease prevention and screening, and more. Women’s health education: The VA is training more and more health-care providers to work specifically with women. Reproductive health: The VA is increasing its coordination of female-specific treatments to provide a full range of medical services, including Pap tests, birth control, mammograms and breast cancer care. A recent press release by the VA says that it leads the nation in breast cancer screening rates with 87 percent of eligible women veterans receiving screening. It has 45 facilities with digital mammography, and mobile mammography in rural areas of the country. Special populations: Women veterans who live in rural areas or are homebound can take advantage of mobile clinics, e-clinics and homebased services. Older women veterans can take advantage of treatments for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoporosis and menopause. If you’re a female vet and you haven’t hooked up with the VA for any of your health care, check it out. You can start online at the Women Veterans Health Care website: www.womenshealth.va.gov. You can apply online and fill out the VA Form 10-10EZ. Look for the video that will walk you through the enrollment process. Or you can call the VA Health Benefits Call Center at 1-877-2228387 if you have questions about enrolling or any other benefits. At the website you can locate a facility in your area. For a non-emergency, it’s required that you be scheduled for an appointment within 14 days.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty continues to impress everyone who needs reassurance about a project. But be careful you don’t lose patience with those who are still not ready to act. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Pushing others too hard to do things your way could cause resentment and raise more doubts. Instead, take more time to explain why your methods will work. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be more considerate of those close to you before making a decision that could have a serious effect on their lives. Explain your intentions and ask for their advice. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might have to defend a workplace decision you plan to make. Colleagues might back you up on this, but it’s the facts that will ultimately win the day for you. Good luck. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat’s co-workers might not be doing enough to help get that project finished. Your roars might stir things up, but gentle purrrsuasion will prove to be more effective. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you care for needs help with a problem. Give it lovingly and without judging the situation. Whatever you feel you should know will be revealed later. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you’re to be admired for how you handled recent workplace problems, be careful not to react the same way to a new situation until all the facts are in. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Rely on your keen instincts as well as the facts at hand when dealing with a troubling situation. Be patient. Take things one step at a time as you work through it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your curiosity leads you to ask questions. However, the answers might not be what you hoped to hear. Don’t reject them without checking them out. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be careful not to tackle a problem without sufficient facts. Even sure-footed Goats need to know where they’ll land before leaping off a mountain path. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Appearances can be deceiving. You need to do more investigating before investing your time, let alone your money, in something that might have some hidden flaws. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your recent stand on an issue could make you the focus of more attention than you would like. But you’ll regain your privacy, as well as more time with loved ones by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re a good friend and a trusted confidante. You would be a wonderful teacher or a respected member of the clergy.

Directions Prepare the sloppy joes: In a large saute pan over medium-high heat, combine the canola oil, bell peppers, jalapeno and onion; cook for 5 minutes. Add the beef and pork; cook thoroughly, breaking up the meat as it browns. Add the garlic. Depending on the amount of residual grease, you may need to drain some of the fat from the pan. Deglaze with the red wine, then stir in the remaining sloppy joe ingredients (except the rolls) and season with 1 tablespoon each salt and freshly ground pepper. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. If the sauce gets too thick as it simmers, add up to 1 cup water to adjust the consistency. Toast the rolls and set aside.

Meanwhile, prepare the onion straws: In a medium sauce pot, heat the oil to 350 degrees. Whisk the egg and milk in a medium bowl. Mix the flour, cayenne pepper, paprika, garlic powder, 1 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper in another medium bowl. Cut the onion in half, then slice into 1-inch-thick half rings; separate into short straw-like pieces. Add to the milk mixture to soak. Once the oil is hot enough, remove the onions from the milk mixture, shake off excess and dredge in the flour mixture, 4 or 5 pieces at a time. Add to the pot and fry until golden brown; transfer to paper towels to drain. Serve the sloppy joes on the toasted rolls and top with onion straws.

ning back broke one tackle and faked out another defender, racing to the end zone for the winning score.
While a small batch of Alabama fans celebrated behind the end zone at Tiger Stadium, AJ McCarron found his parents at the edge of the stands. He lunged into their arms, his “I’m really, really pleased with that last drive,” Saban said. “That’s something I’ll never forget.” watery-eyed father furiously rubbing his son’s hair. Before the final possession, McCarron was 1 of 7 for 0 yards in the second half. All was forgiven when he guided the Crimson Tide on the lightning-quick 72-yard drive, connecting with Kevin Norwood on three straight passes covering 18, 15 and 11 yards The Crimson Tide quarterback was true to his word. against an LSU defense that was giving some room short. McCarron took one shot at With Alabama’s hopes of a second straight national title slipping away, McCarron shook the end zone, the ball falling to the turf when both the receiver and the defender fell off a dismal second half and guided his team right down the field. He read an LSU blitz down. and flipped a screen pass to T.J. Yeldon, who did the rest on a 28-yard touchdown with But, with a much shorter throw, he hit paydirt on the very next play. 51 seconds remaining that gave the top-ranked Tide a 21-17 victory over No. 5 LSU. McCarron had vowed he wouldn’t let his team lose to LSU in the game of the year.
“It was like clockwork,” McCarron said. “The whole offense just looked at each other Mettenberger, who had gotten much of the blame for LSU’s lackluster offense, sudand you could just tell in everybody’s eyes it was like, ‘We do this every Thursday, so denly put it all together for the Tigers in the second half. But LSU couldn’t overcome the nation’s top-ranked team and some dubious calls by coach Les Miles. what’s the difference here?’“ Alabama (9-0, 6-0 Southeastern Conference) now has a clear path to the league cham- The Mad Hatter kept reaching into his bag of tricks -- and kept getting burned. A fake pionship game in Atlanta, and remains solidly on course to defend its national title field goal was stuffed. An onside kick didn’t work. And going for it on fourth down in Alabama territory didn’t work out either. in Miami. “There’s just so many emotions running through me,” McCarron said. “Sometimes it can be a lot of pressure playing here at this university, especially with all the tradition of winning and everything. Just coming back and winning a game like that, and like coach (Nick) Saban said, it might be known as ‘The Drive’ for the history of Alabama. And just to be a part of it with my teammates was just truly a blessing.”
“I wish I had a couple of my calls back,” Miles said. “That’s the way it goes.” Mettenberger nearly bailed out his coach. He finished 24 of 35 for a career-best 298 yards, with 14 of those completions for 202 yards coming over the final two quarters. Landry had eight catches for 76 yards, and Hill rushed for 107 yards and a third-quarter touchdown that got LSU back in the game.
This one was a struggle. Led by embattled quarterback Zach Mettenberger, LSU (7-2, 3-2) fought back from a 14-3 halftime deficit with an offensive performance that was Alabama has not been behind in the fourth quarter since 2010, and sure didn’t have nothing like their dismal showing against the Tide in last season’s BCS Championship much experience at playing with a deficit in 2012. The Tide arrived in Baton Rouge having trailed for a grand total of 15 seconds this season -- one play against Mississippi Game. -- and when McCarron took off on a 9-yard touchdown run with just 11 seconds left Freshman Jeremy Hill scored on a 1-yard run late in the third quarter, LSU’s first TD in the first half it looked like a repeat of last January’s national championship game. against Alabama since 2010 -- a span of nearly three full games. Then Mettenberger threw perhaps the best pass of his LSU career, hooking up with Jarvis Landry on a 14- But LSU was determined not to turn in another embarrassing performance like the one yard touchdown that put the Tigers ahead 17-14 with just under 13 minutes remain- in the Superdome, when a perfect season ended with a dismal 21-0 loss to the Crimson Tide. LSU was on the verge of putting the game away, driving into Alabama territory and forcing Saban to call his remaining timeouts. Page 12 Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly Issues 44/45 November 07 & 14 of 2012 5 Simple Steps To Great Putting Today
By: Michael Lewis
Putting is often the most neglected shot in the game. Too many amateurs practice their golf swing in the hope of better scores but do not think to put time on the practice greens. There is a classic saying often repeated, ‘drive for show, putt for dough’. It’s all well and good getting yourself to the green but if you’re not sinking your putts then your scores are never going to improve. Its time to start adding in some quality time with your putter. Before long you will reap the benefits and start to see your scores dramatically improve. Lets have a look at what you can do to putt better today. 1) You’ve got yourself to near or on the green. Its time to start thinking about the putt. As you approach check out the land around the green. This will give you some good reference points when trying to figure out the line of your putt. What is the general slope of the green? Are there any features such as water nearby - greens tend to slope off into the direction of water. 2) When you are on the green take the time out to really read your putt. Too many amateurs rush through this part and wonder why the ball gets nowhere near. Walk all the way round the putt to get a complete perspective. As you go past the hole take extra care to look at it and see if there are any cheeky breaks there. Take a look at your putt from a couple of feet behind. Cup your hands over your eyes to cut out any distractions if necessary. The path of the ball is determined by gravity so aim in accordance with the slopes ahead of you. Bear in mind that the harder you hit it the less effect a mild slope will have. 3) Grip the club with as much pressure as you would if you were holding a small bird i.e. don’t choke it. Take your glove off to get a better feel for the stroke. Your right (left hand if left handed) should be parallel to your target line. Favor the right hand in terms of grip pressure - this is the guide for your putter. 4) Stand so that your eyes are directly over the golf ball. Be comfortable and balanced in your stance. The golf ball should be toward your front heel. If it’s too far back then your putting stroke will be too steep - this often results in a mis-hit. 5) Create a triangle with your arms and shoulders. The technique of your stroke should be pendulum like. This promotes a smooth strike through the golf ball. Aim to accelerate through the ball to get solid contact and keep your head still throughout. Head movement can be deadly and will see the ball spin off line. Putt as if the hole is a further 10 - 15 inches further on - this should give you the right pace. The putting stroke is the least physically demanding aspect of golf but is probably the toughest shot to make in your mind. Believe you can make it and commit to the putt. If you are negative going into the putt then your body will follow your command and sabotage your shot. It doesn’t cost anything to be positive so block out those bad feelings. Go ahead and use these tips at your next round to improve your technique and watch those putts fall in one after the other.

The Local Company You Can Trust With Your Home
Benefits T•A•P saves money!
When added to existing
insulation or installed on its own, T•A•P helps keep comfortable air in the living area of your home. This reduces the required energy needed to heat or cool your home and, in turn, reduces your heating and cooling bills. T•A•P reduces noise! T•A•P reduces unwelcome noise from outside and helps create a peaceful environment inside the home. Insulated interior walls reduce annoying noises (such as toilets flushing and appliances running) inside a house. T•A•P controls pests! In addition to conserving energy and reducing unwanted sound, T•A•P also responsibly eliminates many common household pests. T•A•P is Green! With so many products claiming to be “green” these days, it is often difficult to discern which products truly are environmentally responsible. When viewed in the context of the entire product life-cycle (from production to operation to disposal), cellulose insulation is one of the greenest building products in the world. Cellulose insulation takes less energy to make than other insulation products, is made from 80%+ recycled paper, reduces a home’s carbon footprint by saving energy, and provides no postinstallation waste. T•A•P is the only product labeled by EPA to control insects that also bears an Energy Star label!
Testimonial CK - The Villas at Glenlakes I just wanted you to know how very pleased I am with your service. At the time you quoted my job, new insulation, you advised that I would see a reduction in my power bill. You were absolutely right. It has indeed been reduced.
