TIDBITS® WANTS YOU TO THINK POSITIVE!
by Kathy Wolfe
During this time of year as we focus on being thankful, Tidbits urges readers to take a few moments to improve their emotional well-being and happiness by thinking positive! • What makes us happy? Psychologists suggest that each person has a happiness “set point,” which is a personal tendency to be very happy, somewhat happy, or not at all happy. About 50% of the explanation for a person’s set point is determined by genetic make-up, which helps to explain why some folks just seem to be naturally happier than others! It also helps explain why long-term levels of happiness appear to be resistant to many significant life events, both good and bad. Lottery winners initially feel “overjoyed” and people who have experienced a negative life event, such as a job loss or death of a loved one, feel “sorrowful,” But most of these individuals eventually settle back to their set point. Research confirms that personal circumstances, such as level of wealth and where we live, account for a measly 10% of happiness. • Are happier people more successful in their personal and professional lives? It appears so partly because happy individuals’ positive moods

No-Bake Macaroni and Cheese
Though our No-Bake Macaroni and Cheese boasts a full, rich flavor, this dish is as simple to prepare as boiling water. 12 ounces (3/4 of a 16-ounce package) penne or elbow macaroni 1 can (14 1/2-ounce) Italian-style stewed tomatoes 1 jar (12-ounce) Alfredo sauce for pasta 3/4 cup low-fat milk (1 percent) 1/4 cup firmly packed basil leaves, cut into thin strips 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon cracked black pepper Basil leaves for garnish 1. In saucepot, prepare penne as label directs, but do not use salt in water. Drain and set aside. 2. In same saucepot, combine stewed tomatoes, Alfredo sauce and milk. Over medium-high heat, heat to boiling, stirring constantly. 3. Return penne to saucepot; stir in basil, Parmesan cheese and cracked black pepper. Toss to coat well. Spoon mixture into large bowl. Garnish with basil leaves. Serves 5. ¥ Each serving: About 470 calories, 17g total fat, 44mg cholesterol, 635mg sodium
If you take your Social Security benefits early, you’ll be reducing by a significant margin the total amount you could receive. --The BMO Retirement Institute has produced a report, “Retirees Not Maximizing Social Security Retirement Benefits,” that outlines some of the facts: --For 60 percent of seniors, Social Security will provide the majority of income they’ll have during retirement. --If you take your benefits early, you’ll receive a reduced amount each month. For example, if you claim at age 62, you might receive $1,500. Wait until age 66 and that amount becomes $2,000. At age 70, it would calculate as $2,640. --If you claim early, that lesser amount stays with you for the rest of your life. (There is a 12-month period when you can pay back all the money you’ve received and start collecting
again later, at a higher rate. But if you don’t act within that window of time, you can’t change your mind.) --If you’re married and die first, your spouse will receive a lesser amount each month if you’ve claimed early. While you’re living, your spouse will receive up to 50 percent of the benefit, which will be smaller because you’ve claimed early. --When it comes to asking for advice before collecting Social Security, 62 percent of seniors haven’t done that. --While it’s possible to receive Social Security at age 62, the qualifying age for Medicare is still age 65. You could be stuck trying to pay for expensive health insurance with a reduced Social Security check. Before you apply for Social Security, get advice. Call and ask that the numbers be run for you showing how much you’ll receive at age 62 as opposed to later. You’ll be surprised at the difference.

Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly Issues 46/47 November 21 & 28 of 2012 motivate them to work enthusiastically toward their goals. They lean toward feeling confident, optimistic, and energetic, they have a positive perception of themselves, and others find them more likable. Happier folks seem to perform better in job interviews and secure better positions as a result. They also tend to have less absenteeism at work. • Level of happiness also affects an individual’s health. Data indicates that happier people have lower levels of hypertension and lower blood pressure. Those who use humor to cope with difficulties have stronger immune systems, and are less likely to get sick. They have fewer doctor visits, use less medication, and are much less likely to experience substance abuse. • Do you think you’d be happier if you just had more money? Not so, say researchers! Income actually has a weak effect on levels of happiness. In the workplace, employees seem to gain more satisfaction from their rank, position, and sense of achievement than they do from their pay. Surprisingly, spending money on others – as little as $5 a day – creates a boost in happiness levels. • Wondering what you can do to increase your happiness level? Since 40% of happiness is subject to self-control, a person’s deliberate choices and intentional activities can amp up cheerfulness and contentment. High-quality social relationships contribute to life satisfaction, and research indicates that married people are generally happier than single ones. Socializing with cheerful people increases the likelihood of being happier. • Think happy thoughts! The average woman has 60,000 thoughts a day – can you believe that 48,000 of them are negative? Avoiding “negative self-talk” can improve attitude and enhance happiness. Rather than saying, “I’m not good at this,” try, “What can I do to get better at this?” Substitute “That’s too difficult,” with “I’m going to give it a try.” Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones allows you to focus on all that is good in life. Keeping a journal listing three things that went well each day produces satisfaction and contentment as well. • Having an “attitude of gratitude” is one of the best ways to possess emotional well-being. Counting your blessings causes you to consider all that is valuable in your life. Gratitude during the bad times actually helps you cope with and adjust to adversity, helping you bounce back to that happiness set point. Taking stock of all you have and recalling contributions others have made for you cause you to be more likely to help others and be less materialistic and envious of others, as well as alleviating bitterness. • You are what you eat! Did you know that a diet low in fiber has been linked to depression?
Likewise, a Vitamin B-12 deficiency can produce irritability and depression. Residents of countries who eat the most fish possess the lowest rates of depression. A wide variety of whole foods provides brain-enhancing nutrients, causing your mind to be sharper and more energized. Too much sugar can contribute to shrinkage in the areas of the brain involved in regulating your moods. • Letting go of offenses, anger, and resentment is a sure-fire way to be happier and healthier. Brooding and obsessing over wrongs done to you and refusing to forgive takes its toll on your happiness levels as well as your physical health. • Don’t worry, be happy! Worriers experience muscle tension, agitation, irritability, sleep problems, difficulty with concentration, and an inability to relax. They spend much of their time trying to predict the future, and worrying about all that could go wrong. Much of the problem involves trying to solve issues that are not solvable. As Mark Twain said, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” • Increase your positive outlook with random acts of kindness. Research has established that these acts induce positive thoughts and can alleviate negative feelings. It seems that individuals get a strong sense that they’re doing something that matters, and subsequently, mood is enhanced. • What about age? Studies have determined that people in their mid- to late-50s are happier, worry less, and have less stress than young adults in their 20s. Part of that finding may be that older people have learned how to control their emotions over the years. • Positive mindsets can be elevated by visualizing your “best possible self.” This involves imagining success at your life goals, realization of your life dreams, and achievement of your best potential, followed up with using this to guide your current decisions. • Practice optimism! Happy folks look at the bright side of each negative situation and find the silver lining in every black cloud. • Unhappy people watch 30% more TV. Happier ones are out socializing, exercising, reading, volunteering, or attending religious services. And along that line, studies show that spiritual and religious people are happier and healthier than others. • Regular vigorous exercise reduces stress and contributes to great levels of fulfillment. Joggers are 70% less likely to have a high level of stress and dissatisfaction with life. Just 17 to 34 minutes per day produces a significant difference. Need more good news? Exercise also contributes to lasting cognitive functioning in old age.
With the holiday season in full swing, you’re probably busy with a dozen things at once, preparing for visitors and shopping for gifts. Don’t forget to schedule in some “me” time and relax with your pet and a few good books, like these: “Dog Is My Copilot: Rescue Tales of Flying Dogs, Second Chances and the Hero Who Might Live Next Door” (Andrews McNeel Publishing) This unique and heartwarming tale of an airborne pet-rescue service is one of my favorite books of the year. Author Patrick Regan details the exploits of Pilots N Paws, an organization through which pilots volunteer their time, aircraft and expenses to fly dogs sitting on “death row” in certain shelters to other parts of the country and to shelters where they are more likely to be adopted. “Little Boy Blue” (Barron’s) Pet rescue takes a grimmer but still hopeful tone in this combination memoir-nonfiction of a puppy rescued from a shelter’s gas chamber, and author Kim Kavin’s deeper look into the shelter system. Shelters aren’t great places at the best of times, but dogs deemed “unadoptable” often find themselves in the worst circumstances, with euthanasia just hours away. A grass-roots movement to save dogs like Blue is building, and Kavin profiles some of these rescuers who donate time, money and love to find homes for as many “death-row dogs” as possible. “Two Seeing Eye Dogs Take Manhattan: A Love Story” (Guide Dog Adventures) On a lighter note, what’s it like to be a seeing eye dog in the big city? Lloyd Burlingame takes a look at life from a service dog’s view -- specifically, two dogs: Hickory and Kemp -- in this refreshing, unique and funny book. Pick it up today.
Homemade Guacamole a Post-Turkey Treat It’s a rare day when I don’t have an avocado “in waiting” on my kitchen counter. And when it’s just ripe, guacamole is bound to be on the dinner menu as an appetizer with tortilla chips or as a final crowning dollop on a quesadilla, taco or grilled fish. When Thanksgiving turkey, dressing and green bean casserole leftovers have run their course, add some zip to a meal with the yummy taste of guacamole. Who can resist the tempting combination of creamy avocado, fresh garlic, seasonings and zesty lime? And while you are at it, let your school-age kids pitch in to help with an easy step or two. As they squeeze the last wedge of lime, invite friends over for an impromptu get-together. It just might be the relaxing antidote everyone needs after a busy holiday week. HOMEMADE GUACAMOLE 2 ripe Haas avocados, peeled and pitted 2 tablespoons lime or lemon juice 1/4 cup red onion, finely chopped 1/2 medium jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped (see note below) 1 garlic clove, minced Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1/2 medium tomato, seeded and diced (optional) 1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro or parsley (optional)

1. Mash avocados in a mixing bowl with a fork or potato masher, leaving some chunks. 2. Add lime juice, onion, jalapeno, garlic, salt and pepper. Stir well. 3. Fold in tomato and add cilantro or parsley, if you wish. 4. Serve immediately or place plastic wrap directly on top of guacamole. Leave on the counter to enhance the flavors until ready to serve within an hour or two. Makes about 2 cups. Tips: --Stretch the recipe by stirring in a half-cup of small-curd cottage cheese just before you spoon it into a serving bowl. --For a quick dip, mash an avocado and add a tablespoon or two of your favorite salsa. Stir together and serve. Note: The juice of jalapeno peppers can be irritating. Wear plastic deli-style gloves when handling. Avoid hand contact with your eyes.

Vet-Friendly Schools G.I. Jobs magazine has released its annual survey and has rated 1,739 schools as being veteran-friendly. The Military Friendly Schools list ranks the top 15 percent of more than 11,000 schools in the country, including universities, colleges and trade schools. It looked at value, flexibility, academic accreditation, percentage of students who are veterans, graduation rates, military-spouse policies, tuition discounts and support services for veterans. To view the list, go online to the database at www. militaryfriendlyschools.com. The matchmaker program is very well done. Pick a degree program, and a list of possibilities opens on the right. Break it down by location and you have a choice between virtual only (online) or campus schools. For a campus location, you can select either a region of the country or an individual state. Click on Flexibility, and use the slide bars to indicate how important it is to have weekend classes, evening classes or online classes. Use the slide bar to indicate sources of funding. When it comes to Areas of Study, here is where the astonishing breadth of the offerings comes into play. Click on your chosen field, and the program immediately sorts all your school options. Once all your choices are made, look for the red thumbsup icon, which indicates schools in the top 15 percent category. Click on each school name for particulars and the ratings in the criteria. Be sure to look at Academics, Review and Profile. If you want to alter your choices, flip back through the categories and make changes to the information. The program responds instantly, showing you the options. If you want to save your information, register on the site. I’m not usually a fan of online databases, but this one is outstanding. If school is in your future, use this program to sort through your options.

More and More Children Getting Kidney Stones DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My very healthy, active, 6-year-old grandson was just diagnosed as having kidney stones. His pediatrician said it is mostly genetic, but no one else in the family has had kidney stones. A friend told us she heard that stones could be caused by drinking Gatorade. My grandson has drunk a lot of Gatorade. He does not eat processed meat, nor does he have much salt in his diet. From the Internet, I came up with the enclosed article, which linked Gatorade to kidney stones. I feel that someone needs to inform parents that too much Gatorade in children can adversely affect health. -- G.S. ANSWER: An increase in children having kidney stones has been noticed. Some authorities have speculated that the increase in stones might be linked to children’s greater intake of salty foods like potato chips, french fries and other heavily salted snacks. The sodium in salt leads to a rise in the amount of calcium lost in the urine, and, therefore, an increase in kidney-stone production. Eight ounces of Gatorade has 110 mg of sodium. New guidelines for daily sodium intake is 1,500 mg. To reach that limit by drinking Gatorade, one would have to drink 13 8-ounce cans or 9 12-ounce cans. Blaming the surge in the number of children on Gatorade seems iffy to me.
Your grandson would be better off substituting some of his consumption of Gatorade with water. He needs to cut back on his consumption of salt from other foods too. Gatorade keeps him hydrated, but he can stay hydrated with water. Dehydration is a proven cause of kidney stones. I welcome other readers’ opinions on this issue. The booklet on sodium, potassium and chloride -- electrolytes -- explains the role of these minerals on health. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does it hurt you to exercise if you have a cold? I do it all the time, and I can’t see that it makes anything worse. I’ve been told not to do so. -- B.R. ANSWER: If you’re coughing, sneezing or have a dripping nose, others are not going to appreciate exercising along with you. A general rule says if your symptoms are above the neck, it’s OK to exercise. Such symptoms would be a stuffy or runny nose, a scratchy throat and an occasional sneeze. If you have an elevated temperature, achy muscles or a persistent cough, don’t exercise. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Since I was a young child, I was told not to use public restrooms because I could catch something. What are the chances of catching a disease from them? -- F.N. ANSWER: Yours is a fear shared by many. If public restrooms were a source of infections, they would be closed. They’re not. As far as sexually transmitted diseases go, I have never seen any information that implicates them in passing such infections to others.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’ve let yourself be distracted from what’s really important. But love finally gets your attention this week. However, it comes with a challenge that could create a problem. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Be careful not to bully others into following your lead. Best advice: Persuade, don’t push, and you’ll get the cooperation you need to move forward with your plans. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Resist the urge to gloat now that you’ve proved your detractors wrong. Instead, charm them back into your circle. Remember: A former foe can become your best ally. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might want to claim all the credit for making this holiday season special. But is it worth producing a lot of hurt feelings by rejecting offers of help? Think about it. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Ignore a co-worker’s questionable behavior. Instead, put your energy into making your own project special. Then sit back and purr over your well-deserved applause. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might not want to accept those suggested changes in your workplace. But don’t chuck them out before you check them out. You could be happily surprised. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your holiday planning might have to take a back seat for a bit so that you can handle a problem with a friend or family member. Your schedule resumes by the 8th. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Relationships in general benefit during the early part of the week, including in the workplace. Also expect some overdue changes in a personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) “Prudence” should be your watchword this week. Best not to be too open about some of the things that are currently happening in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Money is on your mind, so you’d best mind how you’re spending it. Take another look at that holiday budget and see where you can make adjustments. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resolving to revive an old friendship could open some old wounds. Are you sure you want to risk that? Think this through before making a commitment. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your need to know more about a new friend could lead to some startling revelations. Best advice: Keep an open mind about what you learn until all the facts are in. BORN THIS WEEK: Your loyalty to friends makes you a very special person to those whose lives you’ve touched.

The series is considered one of the best and most hard-fought rivalries in all of sports. As the rivalry was mainly played in Birmingham, Alabama for many years, the name of the Iron Bowl comes from Birmingham’s historic role in the steel industry. Alabama leads the series with an overall record of 41–34–1. The games are played at Jordan–Hare Stadium in Auburn every oddnumbered year, and in Bryant–Denny Stadium at Tuscaloosa every evennumbered year. For much of the 20th century the game was played every year at Legion Field in Birmingham. Alabama has a 32–15 record in games played at Legion Field, while Auburn has a 7–4 record in games played at Jordan–Hare Stadium and a 7–1 record in games played in Tuscaloosa (5–1 at Bryant–Denny Stadium). The game is traditionally played on Thanksgiving Day weekend. In 1993 both schools agreed to move the game up to the week before Thanksgiving to give themselves a bye for a potential SEC Championship Game berth, however in 2007 the conference voted to ban any team from having a bye in its schedule before the league championship game, returning the game to its traditional Thanksgiving weekend spot.
between the two schools”. The schools were disinclined to resume the series despite the passage of the resolution, since it did not have the effect of law. However, the Alabama congress threatened to withhold state funding from the schools unless they DID resume the rivalry. With that threat in mind, Ralph B. Draughon, the president of Auburn (then named the Alabama Polytechnic Institute), and Alabama president John Gallalee decided during the winter and spring of 1948 to end the disagreement and renew the series. The games would be played in Birmingham because it had the largest stadium in the state, 44,000-seat Legion Field, and the tickets would be split evenly between the two schools. Alabama won the first game when the series renewed 55–0, the most lopsided victory of the series. By 1980 the series had come to be called the Iron Bowl, due to Birmingham’s prominence as a center of iron and steel production. Throughout the 1980s, Auburn made additions to Jordan–Hare Stadium, and in 1987 it eclipsed Legion Field in size. Auburn desired to make the Iron Bowl a “home-andhome” series, and the schools reached an agreement where Auburn could play their home games for the Iron Bowl in Auburn starting in 1989 (except for the 1991 game, which was played at Legion Field), and Alabama would have a “home” ticket allocation for games in Legion Field. On December 2, 1989, Alabama came to Auburn’s Jordan–Hare Stadium for the first time in the history of the rivalry. A sellout crowd would witness Auburn win its first true “home” game of the series, 30–20 over an Alabama team that entered the game unbeaten and ranked #2 in the country.
Auburn and Alabama played their first football game in Lakeview Park in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 22, 1893. Auburn (then named the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama) won 32–22, before an estimated crowd of 5,000. As if a signal of the future, disagreement between the schools began immediately as Alabama considered the game to be the final matchup of the 1892 season and Auburn recorded it as the first of 1893.
Alabama continued to hold their home game at Legion Field. In 1998, Alabama expanded Bryant–Denny Stadium to a capacity of 83,818, exceeding Legion Field by a few hundred. Alabama moved their home games in the series to Bryant-Denny Stadium in 2000. A new attendance record for the Iron Bowl was set in 2006 as the latest expansion to Bryant–Denny Stadium increased its capacity to 92,138. The record was reset again in 2010, after Tensions further built when, after both 1906 and 1907 contests, Auburn head another expansion to Alabama’s Bryant–Denny Stadium, when a crowd of coach Mike Donahue threatened to cancel the series if Alabama head coach 101,821 witnessed an Auburn victory with a score of 28–27. “Doc” Pollard continued employing his elaborate formations and shifts. The series was indeed suspended after the 1907 game when the schools could In 2009 and 2010 CBS Sports arranged an agreement between the two uninot come to agreement over the amount of expenses to be paid players, as versities to have the game played in an exclusive time slot on the Friday following Thanksgiving. The 2009 game was the sixth Iron Bowl to be played on well as from where officials for the game should be obtained. a Friday and the first in 21 years. CBS did not attempt to renew the agreement In 1947 the Alabama House of Representatives passed a resolution encourag- after 2010 due to criticism from within the state from both fan bases, returning the schools to “make possible the inauguration of a full athletic program ing the game to its traditional Saturday date.

Page 12 Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly Issues 46/47 November 21 & 28 of 2012 Shoot Better Golf Scores – Break 80 Fast
By Jones Harington
If you already break 90 regularly, your next scoring plateau is breaking 80. The plan outlined below, will not only help you figure out your weaknesses, but will also help you manage the course better. Golfer willing to put this plan into action will improve their scores and can break 80 faster. Here’s the plan. Keeping accurate stats, every round will help you to identify weaknesses. You should keep track of putts, up, downs from 40 yards, and closer, up and downs from the sand, greens in regulation, fairways hit, penalty shots, up and downs from 100 yards and closer and your score. This will help you to see exactly which areas you need to work on the most. Averages Necessary to Break 80 • Putts per 18 holes - 32 or less • Up and downs from 40 yards - 50% or better • Up and downs from the sand - 50% or better • Greens in regulation - 10 or more per round • Fairways hit per round - 10 or more per round (may vary depending on how much trouble each course presents) • Penalty shots - 1 or less per round • Up and downs from 100 yards and closer - 33% or better What to Work on if... Putts average more than 32 per round - This could mean you need to work on a couple of things. The obvious answer is putting, but an inflated number of putts can also be caused by poor chip and pitch shots. If your up and down percentage is average or better, but you are taking too many putts, you need to work on long putting. However, if your putts are high and your up and down percentage isn’t very good, you need to work on long putting, chipping and pitching. Up and downs from 40 yards are less than 50% - If you don’t get up and down at least half the time, you need to work on one of two things. You either need to work on chipping and pitching or you need to work on short putts. If you consistently hit good chips, but miss the putts, it’s not a chipping problem, but a putting problem. However, if you consistent leave 10 foot and longer putts after a chip, you need to work on your chipping. Up and downs from the sand are less than 50% - You probably won’t have that many opportunities per round, but you still need to get a sand save every other time you end up in the sand. Most of the time if this percentage is low; you need to work on sand shots. Work on getting the ball out of the sand consistent, and then work on getting it close to the hole. Greens in Regulation are lower than 10 per round - If you don’t get to the green with a birdie putt 10 times per round or better, you may need to work on your iron game. Of course, if you don’t hit the ball in the fairway and you consistently need to punch out from trees or take penalty strokes, you may need to work on your tee shots. Fairways hit per round less than 10 per round - Sometimes this number is a bit skewed because you can miss the fairway all day long by a few yards and still hit greens. This happens and some golf courses are very forgiving. However, if you’re not hitting fairways at a good rate, you may need to work on your driver or consider mixing in a hybrid or wood for some of the narrow tee shots. Penalty Shots more than 1 per round - Usually golfers that take more than 1 penalty shot per round cannot control the ball off the tee. This means you need to work on your tee shots and learn to hit hybrids, long irons or woods from the tee on holes with trouble.

When added to existing
insulation or installed on its own, T•A•P helps keep comfortable air in the living area of your home. This reduces the required energy needed to heat or cool your home and, in turn, reduces your heating and cooling bills. T•A•P reduces noise! T•A•P reduces unwelcome noise from outside and helps create a peaceful environment inside the home. Insulated interior walls reduce annoying noises (such as toilets flushing and appliances running) inside a house. T•A•P controls pests! In addition to conserving energy and reducing unwanted sound, T•A•P also responsibly eliminates many common household pests. T•A•P is Green! With so many products claiming to be “green” these days, it is often difficult to discern which products truly are environmentally responsible. When viewed in the context of the entire product life-cycle (from production to operation to disposal), cellulose insulation is one of the greenest building products in the world. Cellulose insulation takes less energy to make than other insulation products, is made from 80%+ recycled paper, reduces a home’s carbon footprint by saving energy, and provides no postinstallation waste. T•A•P is the only product labeled by EPA to control insects that also bears an Energy Star label!
Testimonial CK - The Villas at Glenlakes I just wanted you to know how very pleased I am with your service. At the time you quoted my job, new insulation, you advised that I would see a reduction in my power bill. You were absolutely right. It has indeed been reduced.
