This Tidbits examines ornaments used during the holidays. Some are historical, most beautiful, many breakable, and plenty just fun! • One of the dictionary definitions for ornamental is: decorative: serving as a decoration and having no practical use. • Historically it is said that the holiday tradition of decorating Christmas trees started in Germany. The first decorations were simple white candles followed by roses a bit later. • In 1605, a groundbreaking moment occurred when a tree in Strasbourg, France, a city on the Rhine River near the German border, was brought inside for decorating. It was adorned with paper roses, nuts, wafers, sweets and lighted candles. After this, more trees were brought indoors and making ornaments became a family holiday tradition. • Much imagination was used to come up with thoughtful and creative decorations, including cookies and painted eggshells.
