Happy National Library Week! Since 1958, we’ve observed this tribute established by the American Library Association. Here are some “book bits” for readers to chew on during this commemorative week. • The word “library” has its origins in the Latin, the word liber meaning “book.” Humans have long recognized the need for an organized archive of history. The earliest libraries dating back to 2600 BC included papyrus scrolls and clay tablets written in cuneiform script. There was even a library classification system as early as 700 BC. • As French settlers made their way to North America in the 1500s, they brought their personal book collections with them. The first non-personal library was established in Quebec City in 1635 at the Jesuit College. Three years later, clergyman John Harvard bequeathed his 400-volume library and half of his estate to the College at New Towne. The college was renamed Harvard College in his honor, and the library’s meager beginnings have grown into the largest academic library and third largest library overall in the United States, with close to 17 million volumes. • In the 17th and 18th centuries, as the quantity of books increased with the advent of printing, there was a considerable increase in the interest of libraries. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin introduced the idea of a “subscription library,” one that shared books among members of a literary society. People could join by purchasing “stock” in the organization, and books were lent only to members. • The Bodleian Library, the main research center for the University of Oxford, was established in 1602. By 1914, the total number of books in its collections had already passed the one million mark. • America’s first actual public library was the Boston Public Library which opened its doors in 1854. Today it’s the second largest library in the U.S., second only to the U.S. Library of Congress. Established in 1800, the Library of Congress is the nation’s largest library. Originally housed in the Capitol building, its 30,000 volumes were completely destroyed in August, 1814 when British troops set fire to the Capitol during the War of 1812. Former president Thomas Jefferson immediately offered his personal library of 6,487 books (which he had spent 50 years collecting) for sale as a replacement, and Congress appropriated $23,950 for the purchase. • Educator and Columbia University librarian Melvil Dewey copyrighted his decimal classification system for books in 1876, a system still used by most libraries. Each category, for example “Philosophy and Psychology,” is assigned a number, which is then divided into subcategories in increments of 10. • Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie gave millions of dollars to fund more than 2,500 libraries in 47. U.S. states, 7 Canadian provinces, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies. Carnegie required that the local communities provide the land and a budget for operation. At the time of his death, Carnegie had already donated $351 million of his fortune – that’s $4.8 billion in today’s money. • There are close to 122,000 public and academic libraries in America, with about 8% of that number public libraries. Nearly 170 million Americans are registered borrowers, and they make about 1.6 billion trips to the library each year.

Check us out on Facebook Carrots -- From Top to Bottom The carrot is a very versatile vegetable. It can be used as a starter, main course, dessert or just as a snack. Carrots can be eaten raw or cooked in almost

any manner imaginable. Carrots help to maintain acidic and alkaline properties in the system. They provide important vitamins for eyes, skin, bones, heart and muscle health. Carrots also can act as a blood purifier, a diuretic and help to relieve flatulence or colic. The mineral content in carrots lie very close to the skin and should not be peeled or scraped off. When selecting carrots, make sure that they are a deep, rich color. The deeper the carrot’s color, the more beta-carotene it contains. If you’re buying the carrots with the leaves, select ones that they are moist and a bright green. Remove the carrot greenery as soon as possible because it robs the roots of moisture and vitamins. You can eat the green tops in a salad or use them similar to the way that you’d use fresh herbs to sprinkle on a dish. Carrots that are less than 8-inches long and relatively uniform in shape and size are the best selection. Carrots should not bend when gently tested. They also should be well-shaped, firm and smooth with no cracks. They should not look wilted. When grated, carrots should be quite juicy. Carrots are often sold with the tops removed. To judge the freshness, check the top of the carrot for darkening. Whether loose or in plastic bags, avoid carrots with green shoots sprouting out (not to be confused with their green tops) yellowed tips, soft spots or withering, as these are a sign of age. Carrots that have an excessive amount of new sprouts or leaves could have large or woody cores. Also avoid carrots with large green areas at or near their tops. This indicates sunburn damage. Before storing carrots, remove their green tops, rinse, drain and put the carrots in plastic bags. Store them in the coldest part of the refrigerator with the highest humidity, they’ll last several months this way. To keep the carrots crisp and colorful, add a little bit of water in the bottom of the plastic storage bag; this will keep the carrots hydrated. Carrots should be stored away from fruits such as apples, peaches and pears that release ethylene gas, which causes carrots to become bitter. If carrots have become limp or dehydrated, cut off one of the

and at www.tidbitsofbaldwincounty.com

ends and place the carrots, cut side down, in a bowl of ice water for about half an hour, to re-crisp them. The coarse, inner core of older carrots should be removed. This Herb Carrot and Mushroom Loaf is an unusual way to serve carrots. It’s a great side dish with roasted meats or fish, and makes a delicious main course for vegetarians. HERB CARROT AND WILD MUSHROOM LOAF 1/4 cup butter, plus 3 tablespoons for buttering pan and topping loaf 1 cup chopped onions 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 1/2 cups grated carrots 2 cups sliced, wild mushrooms (cremini, shiitake, porcini or Portobello) 1/2 cup chopped celery 1 1/2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 5 large eggs, lightly mixed 1 1/2 cups fresh, whole-wheat breadcrumbs 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add onions and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until golden. Add garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Add carrots, mushrooms, celery, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper. Saute until vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes. 3. Pour carrot mixture into a large bowl. Add eggs to the bowl, and 1 cup of breadcrumbs and 1/2 cup of the cheese. Reserve remainder of breadcrumbs and cheese to sprinkle on the top of loaf. Mix the ingredients until well combined. 4. Spread the 2 tablespoons of the butter on the bottom and sides of a 9 x 5 inch, oblong baking pan. Spread the carrot mixture into the pan. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and breadcrumbs. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil, dot with the remaining tablespoon of butter, and bake for 5 to 7 minutes until brown on top. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Billy’s Seafood With a suggestion and help from his grandfather, Billy Parks opened his retail seafood business 38 years ago on the Bon Secour River and he’s been there ever since. His catch phrase, “If it swims, we’ve got it!” is self evident in his seafood market. You will find the traditional favorites like shrimp, crab, oysters, fish, crawfish and Royal Reds along with a few surprises like alligator, frog legs and turtle. From the ordinary to the extraordinary, you will find nearly fifty seafood selections at Billy’s Seafood. When asked what makes his business unique Billy quickly answered, “Bubba!”. Bubba Cheney has been a valuable employee at Billy’s Seafood for 15 years and he’s fun, friendly and loves to interact with customers. When you visit Billy’s, assuming you’re not distracted by Bubba’s jokes or ribbing, pay close attention to the upstairs office to the right of the seafood market. That’s some of Bubba’s more constructive handiwork. He built the office so Billy could oversee his operation while addressing phone calls and paperwork. Depending on the time of day, you may get some insight from the employees on fish cleaning, shrimp deveining or a look at the live blue crabs in the freezer. In addition to kind, helpful employees you will find the freshest seafood around at Billy’s Seafood. Crawfish is in season and there is plenty to be had at Billy’s until July 4th so be sure to come in for a great deal. Billy’s Seafood is located at 16780 River Road in Bon Secour on the river any you can come by boat or car. Their hours of operation are 7am – 5pm Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. You can reach them by phone at 251-949-6288. Don’t forget that Billy’s packs to travel and ships seafood to your door. Furniture Polish Q: I have several older pieces of furniture in my home. They are mostly darker woods. Can you recommend a good polish? I just moved to a dry region and am afraid the pieces might begin cracking. -Art, Palm Desert, Calif. A: My grandmother made her own furniture polish, and I recommend it highly -- if you can tolerate the turpentine smell. For her polish, take 1 cup of boiled linseed oil (which is how you buy it at the hardware store), add one cup of gum turpentine and one half cup of white vinegar. Shake well. Use liberally on your furniture, wipe clean, repeat. After several weeks of using this polish, you will discover a nice, protective coat. *** Q: I have a set of “Anheuser Busch Budweiser Girls,” which are limited to 1,500 sets. I have No. 144. Each piece is hand-colored and finished. Can you give me a value for this set? -- Jean, Decatur, Ill. A: I assume these are the “Budweiser Girls” steins. If so, I found three of the steins on eBay for about $15 each. The complete set would be worth more. Incidentally, the first “Budweiser Girl” was introduced in 1883. The practice of using beautiful women to promote its beer has continued to this day. *** Q: I have a ceramic Staffordshire dog figurine. The label on the bottom claims it is circa 1880. I would like an estimate of how much it is worth -- a formal appraisal is not required. -- Bill, Albuquerque, N.M. A: I am not an appraiser and not qualified to provide you with this service. Since you live in Albuquerque, I suggest you hire the services of a good certified appraiser. There are generally two types of appraisals, verbal and written. The verbal appraisal is less expensive. *** Q: I recently inherited a set of sterling flatware. It is the Bridal Rose pattern by Alvin. Can you tell me when it was made? -- Susan, Sun City, Ariz. A: Your flatware was made in 1903. It was one of the company’s most ornate patterns. Prices include dinner fork, $150; gravy ladle, $280; teaspoon, $150; and salad fork, $170.

How Do You Forgive Stupid?

by Steve Countryman

A

fter doing something stupid again the other day, I asked God how does He forgive stupid. Ignorance can’t be used as an excuse for stupid. Forgetfulness can’t be used as an excuse for stupid. Foolishness can’t be used as an excuse for stupid. Momentary loss of mental faculties is not an excuse for stupid. Stupid is not the same as ignorant. Ignorant is the lack or absence of knowledge and/or understanding. Stupid is knowing what the right thing is to do and still choosing to do the wrong thing! The difference between one who is stupid and one who is foolish as that the foolish doesn’t care! The person who does something stupid considers the error of their poor judgment where the fool brags about it! God reminded me of what sin is. Knowing that God provides all my needs. That God protects and guards my life. That He watches over me and blesses me beyond my wildest imaginations. Knowing that God heals and restores me. God who rescues and helps me. God who keep His powerful promises to me. Knowing that He guides my steps and directs my paths. That God smiles when He looks at me. That it blesses God to bless me. Knowing that God desires a close and intimate daily relationship with me. And that God wants the very best for me and

that He holds back nothing good from me. Knowing all that and how awesome and wonderful God is to me, anytime I do anything that is contrary to God’s will, ways and Word that is sin. To treat God that way knowing how good and great He is, is STUPID! Doing stupid things isn’t always sin, but sin is ALWAYS stupid! But I am guilty of doing such stupid things as that. It is stupid for me to treat my Lord and Master, my God, the creator of heaven and earth in such a disrespectful manner! Now the thing that blows me away is that my God Jehovah loves me SO MUCH that He is willing to forgive me of such stupid things! So when God forgives me my sin He is forgiving STUPID! And if God is willing to forgive my stupid, shouldn’t I be willing to forgive others who are stupid to me? Who treat me wrong and badly? Why would I want to hold on to their stupid in my life verses forgiving them and releasing the stupid hurt and pain of their actions? Since I still do stupid things from time to time, than I am no better than they are who are stupid to me! They NEED my forgiveness not my hatred, anger, attitude or grudge. They need to see the love of Jesus in me, not my stupid!

After all these years of hearing that expression, did I know what a three-dog night was? Apparently not. I had always assumed a three-dog night had to do with a mother dog having puppies, however the internet was quick to reveal that the term originated from Hindu and it refers to a night that is so cold that three dogs are required for keeping warm. I am the first to admit that I learn something new every day and if ever asked about a three-dog night, I can confidently say that a three-dog night isn’t just a band from the late 60’s. 12786 South Illinois St. Elberta, AL 36530 • 251-986-8143 PICKS OF THE WEEK “Silver Linings Playbook” (R) -- Pat (Bradley Cooper) is a man with some complicated issues. He gets worked up over little things, he’s recently been released from a mental institution, he lives with his parents (Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver), and he believes he will reunite with his estranged wife any day now. While trying to figure out life, he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a similarly neurotic young woman. Thus begins an unconventional and well-crafted love story. Really. It’s dramatic and funny and romantic and not too trite in any way. We all know the two attractive basketcases will fall in love, but this movie handles it so well that you will actually care. Cooper’s performance shows he can do more than “The Hangover.” Lawrence won an Oscar for her performance, and De Niro owns his supporting role. “The Guilt Trip” (PG-13) -- This road trip comedy doesn’t smash expectations, but doesn’t let down, either. Andy (Seth Rogen) is a young, single guy about to promote his new invention -- an eco-friendly cleaning product. Out of sheepish guilt, he invites his widowed mother, Joyce (Barbra Streisand), to join him -- in the hope that he can help her reconnect with an old flame,

or just make her happy for a bit. The comedy is more for the Streisand crowd than Rogen fans. Many of their exchanges are improvised, and this pays off in on-screen chemistry. You can really see these two as mother and son -- in a goofy, Hollywood kinda way. The movie is short, mildly charming and offers some easy chuckles along the way.

TV RELEASES “Star Trek: The Next Generation -- Season Three” (Bluray) “Nova: Earth From Space” “Friends: The Complete First Season” (Blu-ray) “Tom & Jerry Kids Show: The Complete Season One”

“Broken City” (R) -- In a city in disrepair, a lone ex-cop (Mark Wahlberg) begins to untangle a web of intrigue and corruption that goes all the way up to the mayor (Russell Crowe). Normally, I give noir films a pass for convoluted plots and silly twists of fate that attack loose ends. “Broken City” gets no mercy. It’s boring. Even Wahlberg looks bored. The loose ends are just forgotten, and in the final act, it is revealed that many different characters were secret best friends the whole time. That’s just cheating. “Not Fade Away” (R) -- David Chase, the director of TV’s “The Sopranos,” looks back at life in 1960s New Jersey. Douglas (John Magaro) is a teenager in the suburbs just getting tuned into the rock music. His father, Pat (James Gandolfini), doesn’t quite get it. Pat never dared give real thought to leaving his hometown, and now his son has long hair, plays covers of British music and seems like he enjoys the idea of “endless possibilities.” While the story isn’t the most moving, the attention to detail will grab you. Everything fits, right down to the creative differences in Douglas’ garage band.
