“LIFE With the Beatles: Inside Beatlemania” by their Official Photographer, Robert Whitaker Reviewed by Larry Cox The impact of the Beatles cannot be overstated. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr not only helped redefine popular music, they reconfigured the popular culture of the 1960s and beyond. Shortly after the band formed, manager Brian Epstein hired fellow Englishman Bob Whitaker to be the group’s official photographer. It was a wise choice, since Whitaker had a keen eye for framing a shot. He took thousands of photographs as he documented John, Paul, George and Ringo in their dayto-day activities. His photographs were different from many of the others that were taken because he not only understood the Beatles, he had a sense of what made them different, exciting and charismatic. His images chronicled the very essence of the Beatles. Whitaker was collaborating with the editors of Life just before his death in England in the autumn of 2011. Despite his absence, work to complete the project continued. The result is not just a treasure trove of images, but also of Bob’s reminiscences of the Beatles as he knew them. Because Whitaker was so intimately involved with the group, the photos reflect the remarkable chemistry of the four musicians, preserving even the tensions and occasional difficulties. Although some of the images will be familiar, others will not. In fact, many of the photographs are appearing in print for the first time. “LIFE With the Beatles” begins with an explanation of the mania that surrounded the group. The main portion of the book is divided into three important years: 1964, 1965 and 1966. For older readers, the pictures and well-crafted text certainly will trigger memories. For others, it will explain how four talented young men from Liverpool changed popular culture and allowed us to see and experience things Starts Fri 5pm in a fresh, new way.

Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly, April 17 & 24 of 2013, For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call 251-504-0149 Q: My favorite new show this year far and away is “Vikings.” Will we get another season, or was this a one-season deal? -- Patrick L., via email

A: The History Channel has picked up “Vikings” -- its first scripted drama series -- for a 10-episode second season. As of now, “Vikings” continues to be the No. 1 new cable series of 2013, and has launched History to No. 1 in cable in its Sunday 10 p.m. time period. Dirk Hoogstra -- executive vice president of development and programming -- says of the show’s renewal: “Vikings is a win-win for us. As our first scripted series, ‘Vikings’ has paid off in a big way, with critical acclaim, strong ratings and a passionate, loyal fan base. We could not be more proud of the entire cast and crew and everyone involved in the making of ‘Vikings.’ Season two will begin production this summer to air in 2014.” *** Q: Is it true they are making a “Finding Nemo” sequel? I really hope so because I really loved that movie. -- Jane S., Tampa, Fla. A: You heard correctly. In the new movie, Ellen Degeneres’ character, Dory, will be the focus, with the movie appropriately named “Finding Dory.” While it’s still super early in the production process, there is a little bit I can tell you about the movie. The new film picks up about a year after the action of “Finding Nemo,” with Ellen’s forgetful fish Dory on her own adventure to reunite with loved ones. According to Disney, the film will feature new characters along with familiar ones, including Nemo and his dad, Marlin. *** Q: “Bates Motel” is gloriously and exquisitely creepy, and is one of my favorite shows of the season. There’s still lots more story that can be told, so please tell me that A&E will bring it back for another season. -- Erica F., Birmingham, Ala. A: The first season of “Bates Motel” premiered as the most-watched scripted drama in the history of the A&E Network, so you can bet that Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore will be back for more mouth-dropping drama. Production begins later this year on a 10-episode second season, which will air in 2014. *** Q: I really enjoy MTV’s “Teen Wolf.” It seems like it has been off the air for a long while. When does it return? -- Frankie, via email A: You won’t have to wait much longer, Frankie. Season three begins June 3, with the show picking up four months after season two ended. It also will be a super-size season of 24 episodes, with lots of new cast members: twin alphas Ethan and Aiden (played by Charlie and Max Carver), alpha leader Deucalion (Gideon Emery), alpha wolf Kali (Felisha Terrell) and tough 17-year-old Cora (Adelaide Kane), who has her own ties to the werewolves.

Comedian Groucho Marx once famously said, “I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member.” And while that line was used by Groucho to hilarious effect throughout the years, as we are reminded come Masters time at Augusta, private golf clubs are -- surprise! -- exclusive. Many people today are surprised to learn that up until the 1970s, women were not only barred from country clubs, they were barred from private institutions like Princeton and Yale, and even restaurants like Peter Luger, the famed Brooklyn, N.Y., steakhouse. Of course, discrimination is never funny. Lawsuits have been waged over the years, riots have occurred, boycotts held and too many deaths to mention here. Former New York Times reporter Marcia Chambers and Vanderbilt University’s Journal of Transnational Law have done expansive work on the subject in regard to private-club memberships, and I’m certainly not here to belittle the subject. Still, let’s not forget that we live in a world where discrimination exists, and to think otherwise is foolish. Ms. Chambers would be the first to admit that there are a myriad of private clubs in New York City alone, never mind Shoal Creek, Ala. What’s interesting to note is that in some famous cases, when a group or subset of people has been denied access to clubs, they often begin their own clubs and then set upon excluding other people, too. Again, there are too many examples to point out, but Groucho’s remark is said to have been made to the membership board of the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. Marx was not Jewish, but the board allegedly agreed to waive that condition if he agreed not to use the swimming pool. Marx is said to have appealed on behalf of his daughter: “She’s half-Jewish ... can she wade up to her knees?” Once, when asked what his handicap was during a pro-am at a private club, Sammy Davis Jr. looked at the reporter with disbelief. “Handicap? I’m a one-eyed, negro Jew!” Those Hollywood guys are a bunch of kidders, but the situation had a different edge when it came to the 1960 presidential election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. History shows Kennedy to be one of the leading presidents in terms of civil rights, but having grown up in an infamous family only one generation removed from the “Irish need not apply” and anti-Catholic discrimination days, he admitted associations were complicated matters. When Nixon was criticized for his membership in The Burning Tree Golf Club, Nixon all but stammered and fell all over himself trying to explain away the “exclusive” policies the club made no efforts to hide. A week later, when it was learned that Kennedy was in the club and was sponsored by Nixon to join only seven years earlier, Kennedy gave a good-natured smile and laughed at the reporters. “Hell,” he said. “They don’t even allow Catholics!”

This is a foolproof recipe for fresh, homemade guacamole that never fails. You can mash for a smooth dip or leave the ingredients chunky for a more hearty guacamole that is a tasty addition to tortilla chips or your favorite Mexican dish.

Fresh Guacamole Ingredients 3 Haas avocados, halved, seeded and peeled 1 lime, juiced 1/2 t. salt 1/2 t. ground cumin 1/2 t. cayenne 1/2 medium onion, diced 1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced 2 Roma tomatoes, seeded and diced 1 T. chopped cilantro 1 clove garlic, minced

In a large bowl place the scooped avocado pulp and lime juice, toss to coat. Drain, and reserve the lime juice, after all of the avocados have been coated. Using a potato masher add the salt, cumin, and cayenne and mash. Then, fold in the onions, jalapeno, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Add 1 tablespoon of the reserved lime juice. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let sit at room temperature for 1 hour and then serve.
