TIDBITS® GETS ILLUMINATED WITH NIGHT LIGHTS
by Patricia L. Cook Children who are afraid of the dark often need a small night light to help them overcome their fear. This Tidbits is about small and large lights in the dark as well as neon lights that shine in some pretty fancy ways! • Even on very dark nights, if you let your eyes adjust it is possible for most people to see well enough to walk around. • The moon at night shining in the dark is not actually a light source since it does not produce its own light. The moon is visible because of the sun’s light that bounces off of it back to earth. When we see different phases (or sizes) of the moon it is because the earth revolves around the sun and the moon orbits the earth. The part of the moon that is reflecting depends on the angles or relative positions of the earth, moon and sun. • The earth’s orbit also changes our view of the stars at night even though the stars are in fixed patterns. Astronomers who named many of the stars and constellations (named patterns of stars) years ago gave them Greek and Roman names that are still used today. • The most well-known constellations are the “Big Dipper” and “Little Dipper.” The “dippers” are part of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, which mean Greater Bear and Smaller Bear. • Many children the world over hear a song about the night sky long before they learn to talk. Surprise Mom With Overnight Egg Dish Serve up a tasty brunch surprise for Mom on Mother’s Day. It’s an easy overnight egg dish like you’ve never tasted before -- fresh apples and apple-chicken sausage are the new ingredients that give it extra zip. Whether you set up a pretty breakfast-in-bed tray or make place settings for the whole family at your kitchen table, she’ll be thrilled by the celebration that focuses on her. Let the kids prepare this brunch entree with another adult the night before. There is cheese to shred, bread to cube and lots of eggs to crack -- perfect jobs for junior chefs. You also might want to prep some fruit and berries as a side to the egg dish. MOTHER’S DAY EGG DISH 5 cups of 3/4-inch square cubes of bread from a sourdough or French baguette 5-6 links (about 3/4 pound) of chicken-apple precooked sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 1/2 cups grated medium and sharp cheddar cheese 2 apples peeled and thinly sliced 6 eggs beaten 2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon salt and cracked pepper to taste. Put the following together the night before. 1. Set the cubes of bread in a buttered glass 8-inch-by11-inch baking dish. Sprinkle sausage, cheese and apples on top. Lightly toss together. 2. Combine beaten eggs, milk and salt and pepper in a bowl and pour mixture over all, making sure bread is soaked with the mixture. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight. 3. In the morning, remove foil, preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 45-50 minutes. 4. Let stand for 10 minutes, then cut into serving pieces. Serves 6.
Vetting a Pet-Sitter
Already
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently got a new job, and I need to have someone come and feed my cats and walk the dog because I don’t get home until late at night. How can I find a pet sitter I can trust? -- Missing My Pets
DEAR MISSING: DogVacay.com, a pet boarding service, recently put out a list of five things you should do when considering a potential pet sitter. Hopefully these will help in your search: --Interview the pet sitter, and have your pet interview him or her as well. See how the sitter and pets interact. --Ask for references at the very least. While pet sitters aren’t required to be licensed or insured, they should have references you can contact -- typically other clients. Some pet sitters will have a certification through a professional organization like Pet Sitters International, meaning they have taken additional pet-sitting and business courses offered by that organization. --Ask basic but important questions. Nothing’s too trivial for your pets. What time will the sitter come? Where will your dog be walked? What’s a typical visit like? --Give the sitter as much info as possible about your pets. Once you’ve decided to take on a sitter, make sure he or she knows your pets’ particular habits, favorite foods, specific medications and when to take them, etc. --Monitor your pets. When you get home, how do your pets react to you? Do you notice behavioral changes? Are they handling your absence well? Pets might not take to a new schedule right away, but if they don’t adjust, you may need to consider a new sitter or a different pet-care option.

published by Jane Taylor and her sister, Ann, in England in 1806. Their second book of children’s poems, Rhymes for the Nursery, includes the poem, The Star, written with five verses. Only the first verse is widely sung, with an occasional addition of verse two. • The tune for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star is actually older than the poem. It originated in France, first seen in print in Paris in 1761. The tune was first associated with a French song, Ah! Vous dirai-je, Maman, which is translated Ah! Will I tell you Mommy. It is still popular with French children. • Another “tune” that came from Paris was the quiet buzz of neon lights. Georges Claude, a chemist, engineer, and inventor was a pioneer in the development of neon lighting. • Neon gas was first discovered in 1898. The word neon was chosen for the gas from the Greek word “neos” which means “new gas.” • Two predecessors to neon lights were the Geissler Moore tubes that used pressurized gas in tubes with electric volts to make colorful lights. When neon was discovered it proved to be a more lasting gas for tube lights. Neon was in short supply until Georges Claude’s company, “Air Liquide,” began producing large quantities. Claude made his first neon light in 1902 and first displayed his invention at the Paris Motor Show in December, 1910, with two 39 foot long (12 m) bright red tubes of neon light. • Claude received his first patent for neon lighting in Paris in 1911 and another in the United States in 1915. • (There is some historical evidence that Perley G. Nutting, a physicist who started the Optical Society of America, displayed the first neon light at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904.) • The first commercial neon sign was sold to a barber shop in Paris in 1912, by Jaques Fonseque, an associate of Claude. • When red and blue tubes of neon lights were installed decorating the Paris Opera House in 1919, the colors became known as “Opera Colors.” • Claude sold the first neon sign in America, actually two, to a Packard Car dealership in Los Angeles in 1923. The price: $24,000! Neon quickly caught on in the advertising world. • The “liquid fire” signs began dominating outdoor advertising displays in American cities from Times Square in New York to Los Angeles. Las Vegas quickly became a city filled with neon on the borders of signs and buildings, architectural accents and even neon animations. • Today, many of the first neon signs and displays in Las Vegas have become part of the Neon Museum. The Museum has three components: the Downtown Gallery, the Neon Boneyard, and the Las Vegas Signs project. • By the way, Georges Claude was imprisoned from 1945-1949 by the French government for collaborating with the Germans in World War II. • Claude’s patents were good but they did not stop others from “taking off ” from his work. Charles J. Wamser created his sign company with neon technology that was slightly different from Claude’s patents. • Wamser’s company, Sheet Metal Products, Inc., was started in a rented garage in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and started mass producing signs in the late 1920s. His company, now named Everbrite, is still a worldwide leader in the lighting and branding of companies. • Many of the “neon” signs that dotted the landscapes in North America were not all neon. People use the name “neon” for lights of all colors but actually neon lights are red. Other gases used with neon produce different colors. Argon is most widely used, along with mercury and phosphor. There are now over 150 colors that can be produced. • Neon signs were most popular in the 1950s. By the 1960s neon lights were being replaced with cheaper lighting. • As in fashion, many things of old come back to be popular again. In 1999, the Route 66 Corridor Restoration Act, helped to put neon signs of old back in the public eye. Many of the monuments to the past, including the neon signs that dotted Route 66 were restored and reinstalled. • Artists and historians have not only helped to revive the “retro” looking neon signs in cities and along highways, but “Neon Art” is now considered at art form. • Not only can you see old neon in the museum in Las Vegas, new and specialized neon art is on display in Los Angeles. In 1981, the Museum of Neon Art (MONA) opened, being the only museum in the world to specialize in neon as an art. • Whether you prefer your night light in a small electric bulb or out in a city looking at the fancy displays or on a camping trip looking at stars and the moon in the sky, these all provide wonderful lights in the dark of night.

Husband Thrashes About During Sleep DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 73-year-old husband has, in the past year, been jerking during his sleep. His movements are quite wild at times. He has fallen out of bed three times during his “fighting” dreams. He dreams he is in a fight at work, playing football or shooting things. Just last night, it was killing mice. He jerks with his arms and legs. I don’t attempt to wake him, as one time he was on the verge of striking me. I did yell his name three times, and he finally woke up. He has had two sleep tests and was told he has “half sleep apnea.” What does that mean? He takes no sleeping aids. I have never heard that such movements are a sign of sleep apnea. -- D.S. ANSWER: A good bet is that your husband has a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. For many, such movements are bending of the big toe and ankle. For others, it’s jerking of the legs and arms. Most often the person doesn’t waken and has no recollection of what went on during the night. The bed partner and the condition of the blankets give testimony to what occurred during sleep. If the person doesn’t have daytime fatigue, then this disorder isn’t considered a sleep problem for him or her. It is for the one who shares the bed. Sometimes periodic limb movements of sleep occur with another problem, restless leg syndrome. That’s a creepy-crawly sensation in the legs that comes on in the evening when sitting or in bed. The person is compelled to get up and move around to quell the feeling. A warm bath before going to bed might calm your husband’s movements. Decreasing the amount of caffeine he drinks and doing the same for all forms of tobacco could bring nocturnal peace for you and him. If the situation doesn’t clear, then Mirapex or Requip, two Parkinson’s disease medicines, can put an end to the nighttime martial arts. Do tell his doctor about this. Periodic limb movements of sleep are, at times, associated with iron deficiency. I have no idea what “half sleep apnea” means. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Every now and then, my eyelid twitches. I don’t think it’s due to me being tired, because it can happen when I am wide awake in the morning. And I don’t think it’s due to stress -- I love my work. Furthermore, I don’t drink any caffeinated beverages. What do you think is the significance of this? -- H.R. ANSWER: Nearly everyone has had a twitchy eyelid at some time in life. It’s not a sign of illness. It’s not something that lasts for any length of time. Fatigue, stress and caffeinated beverages all have been implicated as causes. But most people with a twitchy lid are like you; they have and do none of these things. A washcloth soaked in warm water and placed on the involved, closed lid for a few minutes generally can stop the twitching. Or gentle massage of the involved, closed lid also can end it. If it continues and lasts for longer periods, then a doctor has to be consulted.

Name the song that contains this lyric: “I met him at the candy store. He turned around and smiled at me. You get the picture?” Answers 1. The Four Tops, in 1964. Many others have covered the song, including Johnny Rivers with a slower version in 1967, and the duo of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1969. 2. Crystal Gayle, in 1977. It almost didn’t happen, as the song’s composer was in the middle of a deal with another artist. 3. Elton John, in 1980. “Conquer the Sun” was on the b-side. Oddly enough, one version of the sleeve for the single spells the title as “Little Jeanie.” 4. Prince, in 1988. It was the first Prince single released as a CD 5. “Leader of the Pack,” by the Shangri-Las in 1964. The song required 63 takes, as none of the music was written down. VA Home Loans Are Great Deal One of the biggest benefits veterans have is the home loan guaranty program. The Department of Veterans Affairs website (www.benefits.va.gov) has full details, but here are a few things you need to know if you’re considering using it. Benefits: You usually won’t need a down payment, the closing costs are limited and can be paid by the seller, you can pay off the loan early without penalty, and you won’t be stuck paying private mortgage insurance. The VA doesn’t loan you the money, but it stands behind a loan you get from another source. The loan guaranty is insurance to the lender, which can be helpful if you’ve been turned down by traditional sources. Eligibility: You must have decent credit, sufficient income and a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). The home must be for you to live in. To obtain a COE, you need to have been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. To apply for the COE, you’ll need VA Form 26-1880. See the VA website for a chart showing the qualifying wartime and peacetime periods, the qualifying active dates and the minimum number of service days required. What You Can Do: Buy a home, build a home, buy and improve a home, install energy-related improvements, buy a manufactured home and/or lot to put it on. Other Types of Loans: Cash-Out Refinance, which allows you to take the equity from your home for paying off debts, financing school or making improvements to your home; and Interest Rate Reduction Refinance Loan (IRRRL), which is a refinance program for your existing VA loan. Additionally, there are housing grants to help disabled veterans buy or modify a home. If you don’t have a computer, call the VA for more information about the home loan guaranty program at 1-800-827-1000.

Baby boomers are turning 65 at the rate of 10,000 per day. When we do, we’re eligible to sign up for Medicare. Allsup, a provider of services for those of us who have Medicare plans, has outlined in a newsletter some of the facts we need to know about signing up for Medicare. Taking the right steps at the beginning is crucial -- and difficult because of all the choices that have to be made. When can we sign up? Three months before we turn 65, the month we turn 65, and three months afterward. If you’re still working at age 65 and have a group plan through your employer, you might be able to keep that coverage. Check with your employer’s healthcare administrator for specific questions. Study the Medicare Part D prescription-drug plans carefully. There are about 20 to choose from. With Medigap policies, there are around 10. Beware: Medigap doesn’t necessarily have to accept you after your initial enrollment period. Enroll on time. If you don’t, you could be assessed a penalty of 10 percent for each 12-month period you could have been enrolled in Part B. If you go 63 days without enrolling, you also could be assessed a penalty for Part D. If you have a high income ($85,000 for individuals, $170,000 for couples) you’ll pay increased rates for your premiums for Part B, as well as for drug prescriptions. The income figure to be used is your Modified Adjusted Gross Income from your tax returns two years ago. Your best bet: Begin studying Medicare on your 64th birthday. Go to the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) frequently and become comfortable with all the choices and decisions. Then, when the time comes, you’ll know how to handle your Medicare options.

On Broadway in New York City, atop the 40-story building that housed the Mutual of New York Insurance Company, also known as M.O.N.Y., Tommy James often saw a huge neon sign flashing the short form of the company’s name. ¥ Want a refreshing, low-cal beverage that’s seriously inexpensive and feels lavish? Fill a pretty glass pitcher with ice water and add some sliced cucumber. It looks straight out of the spa, and it’s pretty tasty, too. ¥ “We packed away all of our winter items, as it’s finally starting to feel like springtime, but one thing we didn’t pack away is the small packets of hand or foot warmers. These are packs that, when exposed to air, heat up and provide moderate heat for several hours. The ones we bought have adhesive on one side, and we can slap them on our baby’s bottle to warm it when we’re out and about. They really work.” -- R.G. in New York ¥ No time in the morning to wash and blow-dry your hair? Use
a refreshing mist and just do the sides. Keep some dry shampoo around. Use it and give your hair a quick blast with the dryer. ¥ “Did you know that there’s as much or more sugar in those delicious frozen coffee drinks as there is in a soda or a milkshake? I didn’t realize it, and since I have switched to sugar-free, and only sometimes, I have noticed the difference. Pay attention to what’s in your beverage!” -- C.C. in Ohio ¥ Ready to hit the beach or lakeside? Make your own sneaky, secure money keeper by cleaning out an empty bottle of sunscreen. Choose one that has a wide mouth if you can. If not, try to make an even cut at the top of the label. Then just slide the bottle open, put your valuables in and secure with tape. It will look like you brought a bottle of sunscreen, and no one will know that your money or even a cell phone is inside!

Just because the doctor prescribes a medication, doesn’t mean we take it. A recent study by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that many of us avoid purchasing or taking the drugs that are prescribed for us in an attempt to save money. It’s no wonder: In one year alone, we spend more than $45 billion in out-of-pocket drug costs. The results of the CDC study were broken down into two age groups: those 18-64 and those 65 and older. Here are some of its findings: --Younger adults were twice as likely as seniors to skip needed medications to save money. --Some 23 percent of uninsured adults between 18 and 64 skipped taking their medications to reduce costs, compared with about 14 percent of those with Medicaid and 9 percent with private insurance. --About 13 percent of patients ages 18-64 did not take medication as prescribed, including missing doses, taking less medicine and delaying filling a prescription. --20 percent asked their doctor for a lower-cost medication -- equally split between those over and under age 65. However, for seniors over age 65, those on Medicare-only were the largest group in both asking for a cheaper prescription and not taking the medication as prescribed. --2 percent bought prescription drugs from another country -- equally split between those over and under 65. --6 percent of patients ages 18-64 used alternative therapies -- three times as many under as the over 65 group. Skipping doses of medication can have serious results, depending what the illness is. Antibiotics for infection need to be taken for the full course of treatment, or the infection can come back even stronger. Many drugs are dosed by patient weight or level of the drug in the blood steam. Overall, not taking prescribed medication results in increased emergency-room visits, poor health status, increased hospitalization and cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks, to the tune of $290 billion per year. As an alternative to skipping medications, request a cheaper alternative, such as a generic. Ask for help with diet and exercise to increase levels of health. If you have insurance, inquire about a prescription rider to your policy to cover drugs. Research pharmaceutical companies that give free or reduced medications to those who qualify as low-income. Contact Partnership for Prescription Assistance (www.pparx.org, or call 1-888-477-2669) to see if you qualify. Check FamilyWize drug discounts at familywize.org. Read the site carefully. There is a good chance your pharmacy will give you a discount, with average savings of 35 percent.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Taking advice isn’t always easy for self-assured Rams and Ewes who think they know what’s best. But it wouldn’t hurt to listen to what close colleagues have to say. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You know how to balance life’s practical aspects with the poetic. This gives you a special edge this week in both your professional endeavors and your personal life. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Focus on keeping a balance between your home-related activities and your workplace responsibilities. Be mindful of both without obsessing over one or the other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A change in plans is likely as you discover more facts about a possible commitment. Continue to ask questions and, if you’re not sure about the answers, demand proof. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be careful not to let that Leonine pride keep you from seeking wise, experienced counsel before making an important decision. A family member once again seeks your help. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That surge of Virgo energy drives you to take on more work assignments. Be careful you don’t overdo it, or you might find yourself overdone: i.e., burned out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your decision to be upfront with colleagues on a touchy matter causes some consternation at first. But in the end, your honesty wins their trust and admiration. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As in the past, someone again wants to share a secret with you, knowing it will be safe. But do you really want to be this person’s confidante? Think about it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As one of nature’s straight shooters, you seek to correct misconceptions about a project. Do so, of course, but without giving away too much too soon. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative pursuits continue to be strong in the gifted Goat’s aspect. New friendships can come from sharing these experiences with like-minded art aficionados. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Resolve lingering grumblings over your way of doing things by keeping your mind open to suggestions while continuing to show how your plans will work. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The perceptive Piscean might find that changing course in midstream isn’t as workable as it would seem. Explore this option carefully before making a decision. BORN THIS WEEK: Your willingness to share your love of life’s good things brings joy to many, including, of course, yourself.

A Storm Is On Its’ Way - Let’s Play Golf
by Verlyn Ross
The game of golf can pit us against some exteme challenges if bad weather moves in. How we respond can make all the difference in the world, not only in this game but in future games. A “quitter” will sabatoge his future game. Bad weather and poor playing conditions on the golf course can either bring the best out of you, or, regretfully, the worst, depending entirely upon your attitude! Most of us who have a great adoration, bordering on carnal desire, for golf absolutely derive pleasure from it when the conditions on the course change at the drop of a hat. That is what makes golf Horschel earned his fourth-straight top-10 finish by rolling in a pressure-packed, 27-foot birdie fun and almost brazen.
First PGA Tour Victory for Horschel
putt to cap a weather-delayed, 8-under 64 at TPC Louisiana that earned him a victory at the Zurich Classic on Sunday. Horschel’s final-day score tied a course record and left him one stroke ahead of D.A. Points. “This whole week I felt like I’m going to get my victory here,” Horschel said. “I felt like, you know, it’s got to be sooner or later, and thank God I finally won.” The 26-year-old former Florida Gator began the day two shots behind third-round leader Lucas Glover and surged into the lead with six straight birdies after the first of two weather delays for lightning. He finished the tournament at 20 under, narrowly holding off Points, who won the Shell Houston Open last month by a stroke over Horschel and Henrik Stenson.
Think about it, if you make every shot with a faultless lie, with absolutely no wind, and with zero barierss to play around, then what would be the challenge? Of course the game would be much easier and you would probably score very well on each game you play, but there’s no zest when constantly playing in perfect conditions, no adaptation required, nothing to test our abilities at golf, nothing to learn. The Bliss Of Overcoming Stormy Weather
Billy Horschel gets the trophy, $1.19 million and a two-year PGA Tour exemption with his victory.
Overcoming the ever-changing challenges of golf is what it’s all about. What changes are out there that can make the game exciting? For starters, bad weather! Having a storm roll in at the last minute can cause all kinds of obstacles that may dramatically change the game. Golf is an outdoor sport, always has been, and always will be. It’s an admirable and beautiful thing, knocking out a good round with your friends under the great blue sky, getting a sexy suntan, and watching nature as you move from hole to hole. However, this perfect picture can change in an instant when a storm hits the area. Every shot you make will be affected by these weather conditions. The good players, those that have an affirmative mental attitude will adapt to these challenges and will adjust to the changes in the environment and on the course. Other men and women who respond to stormy weather as annoying, and obviously have a bad attitude, will complain and more than likely quit their game out of total discomfiture. Learn To Take Advantage Of Poor Playing Conditions, Like The Pros Do Ironically, there are many accomplished and professional golf players that actually prefer to play in bad weather. This, of course, completely changes their shots from hole to hole, their total game. The reason they enjoy this is so that their competition will obviously not do as well as normally expected. While those of us like you and I do not compete and are playing golf purely for enjoyment, professionals that are competing in major tournaments are out there solely to win. The competition is bloodthirsty and stormy weather will bring out the very best in those players who can adapt. When the weather brings a bad turn during these tournaments, those players that only fare well in normal conditions are eliminated. Then only the better, more experienced golf players are left to compete. These men and women are able to use the conditions to their advantage including the wind, the precipitation, and the extreme temperatures. So, the bottom line is, take full advantage of the so-called bad breaks. Turn them into your advantage to make yourself a better golfer. That’s what the pros do.
