The long white trails of clouds that are formed when airplanes fly across the sky are called contrails. When the “friendly skies” are busy there are many crisscrossing lines. • The word contrail is short for “condensation trail.” Webster’s Dictionary defines contrails as “streaks of condensed water vapor created in the air by an airplane or rocket at high altitudes.” • Contrails are considered “man-made” clouds since they are formed by airplane exhausts. Water vapor condenses and freezes when air around planes and particles (aerosols) from the exhausts hits the cold temperatures present at high altitudes where airplanes fly. • Contrails are formed above 30,000 feet, which is approximately 5-6 miles (9-10 km) above the earth where the air is extremely cold; less than -40° F (-40° C). • An interesting way to think of contrails is to compare when you exhale warm moist air in cold winter temperatures and “see your breath.” The damp, warm air coming from your lungs adds moisture to the air forming condensation. Usually the condensation from your breath evaporates in less than a second. Condensation from jet airplanes, in the form of contrails, can last quite a while, sometimes even for hours if the conditions are right. • Just like natural clouds, contrails are made of water and ice crystals. Depending on air conditions, contrails can last only a few minutes and be fairly small or they can grow miles long and remain visible for hours. The tiny moisture droplets in contrails freeze instantly and can’t evaporate or melt. They eventually fade away in what is called “sublimation,” when the solid particles turn to gas. It is the same situation as when dry ice ‘dissolves’ back into the air. • The first recorded spotting of a contrail happened over Italy in 1915 by a man named Ettenreich who said, “the condensation of a cumulus stripe from the exhaust gases of an aircraft” was visible for a while in the sky. • Real interest in contrails and more published reports came about during World War II. It was at that time that more aircraft were produced and used in combat that had the ability to reach high altitudes. • Hundreds of aircraft working together over Europe generated so many contrails that formations were hard to keep and targets hard to find. On the contrary, positions could be spotted by the enemy making aircraft vulnerable to enemy attack. • H. Appleman, an American scientist, in 1953, and E. Schmidt, a scientist in Germany, independently studied contrails and developed the theory of contrail formation, called the Schmidt-Appleman Criterion that is still accepted today. • The accepted theory of the two scientists “showed that the threshold temperature depended on the ambient pressure, temperature and humidity outside of the aircraft, and on the ratio of water vapor and heat released into the atmosphere by the aircraft exhaust.” Appleman published a chart that is used to determine if and when aircraft produce contrails. • One of the biggest events that allowed scientists to observe the absence of contrails happened after the attacks on America on September 11, 2001. The skies were cleared of traffic, except for a few military aircraft, for approximately 2 days. Even after these observations, there is still not a definitive answer among scientists about the effects of contrails on the environment.

Check us out on Facebook Start Mother’s Day in a Special Way Throughout the years, my favorite Mother’s Day gifts have always been the ones that are hand-written and homemade. This year, I’m looking forward to another one of my husband’s special breakfasts. Michael’s kitchen skills are limited to coffee and egg dishes. I don’t drink coffee, but I love the way he makes breakfast. It makes Mother’s Day extra special. The recognition of motherhood has its roots in the spring festivals and celebrations of the ancient Romans and Greeks. The tradition continued with the advent of organized churches and honored Mary, the mother of Christ, during the fourth Sunday of Lent. Later, Mothering Sunday, an English holiday, was created to celebrate all mothers. The tradition of a special holiday just for Mother’s began in the United States more than 150 years ago. In 1872, Julia Ward Howe, author of The Battle Hymn of the Republic, began organizing an official mother’s day on June 2 to celebrate peace and as a protest against the futility of one mother’s son killing another during the Civil War. This more political observation of mother’s day soon died out. Later, Anna Reeves Jarvis wanted to raise awareness about the poor health conditions in Appalachia. She started “Mother’s Work Day Clubs” to improve the sanitary conditions in towns in both the North and the South to control a typhoid outbreak in both Union and Confederate encampments. Reeves also began a “Mothers’ Friendship Day” to reconcile families divided by the Civil War. In 1905, after Jarvis death, her daughter, Anna M. Jarvis, began a campaign to recognize her mother’s work and to honor her memory. Her mother had once said that “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother’s day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers.” During a church service in 1908, she began handing out her mother’s favorite flower, a white carnation, along with pink or red carnations to honor mothers who are still alive. She also lobbied President Taft and President Theodore Roosevelt to start a national holiday. It took several years, but on 1914, President Woodrow Wilson
and at www.tidbitsofbaldwincounty.com
signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. The House of Representatives also adopted a resolution recommending that officials of the federal government wear white carnations on Mother’s Day. Over the years, Anna M. Jarvis became violently opposed to the commercialization of Mother’s Day. “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit.” She was arrested for disturbing the peace during a public protest in 1923 and fought to stop the sale of flowers. While Mother’s Day has become one of the most popular days to send flowers, dine out and make long-distance calls, Anna M. Jarvis’ original mission to honor and recognize the contributions and sacrifices made by mothers should not be forgotten. Make sure your Mother’s Day starts off in a special way with this delicious breakfast recipe for an Oven-Baked Denver Omelet! OVEN-BAKED DENVER OMELET 8 eggs 1/2 cup half-and-half cream 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup salsa, mild, medium or hot 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese 1 cup finely chopped fully cooked ham, Canadian bacon or sausage 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 2 tablespoons softened butter for greasing pan 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. 2. Using a large bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Stir in the salsa, cheese, meat, bell pepper and onion. 3. Spread butter on bottom and sides of a 9-inch square baking dish. Pour mixture into baking dish. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Majolica Frogs
Q: I recently inherited a set of Majolica figurines. Although they are rather hideous, I suspect they might be valuable. According to the documents I have, they were made by Jerome Massier and are his “Singing Frogs.” -- Betty, Westminster, Colo. A: You are going to croak with joy when I tell you that your figurines are valued at $1,200 in Warman’s Majolica Identification and Price Guide by Mark F. Moran. According to Moran, the Massier family began producing ceramics in Vallauris, France, during the mid-18th century. *** Q: I have a painting by Emmanuel P. Matthews entitled “Picnic on the Pond.” I was told several years ago by a representative of a major auction house that it could be worth as much as $10,000, but I would have to bring it to New York for a real appraisal. What is your advice? -- Samantha, Streator, Ill. A: If you plan to sell your painting, the first thing you need to do is get an appraisal by a certified expert. This expert isn’t a neighbor or someone who claims to know a little about artwork. To find an appraiser, I suggest you contact one of the associations, namely The American Society of Appraisers, P.O. Box 17265, Washington, DC 20005; The International Society of Appraisers, 1131 SW 7th St., Suite 105, Renton, WA 98055; or The Appraisers Association of America, 386 Park Ave. South, No. 2000, New York, NY 10016. Experts generally provide two types of appraisals, verbal and written. Written appraisals are especially recommended for insurance purposes. After you have gotten an appraisal, then the time has come to contact some of the larger auction houses. The main thing is to do your homework and rely on experts who are competent and knowledgeable about artwork. *** Q: I have a creamer and sugar set that I believe is at least 100 years old. I am enclosing pictures of the set, which is marked “Germany.” Can you help me find out more about it? -- Sue, Montevideo, Minn. A: Judging by the pictures you sent, I believe your set was made during the 1920s. Similar sets in my area sell in the $25 to $45 range, depending, of course, on condition.

Because by sincerely praying this prayer and heeding to it, you have actually kicked the old devil out, storming out the door and madder than a hornet. Every time he tries to get back in, remember the prayer and know that Jesus defeated that old foe a long time ago. As you kicked him out, all the evil spirits had to go because you have bound him. You see, God tells us in his word that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God by the pulling down of strongholds. That’s what you did. You pulled down those strongholds by not yielding to anger, hatred nor strife. Instead, you acted in love and in a quiet spirit. Love will never fail because God is love and He never fails. 12786 South Illinois St. Elberta, AL 36530 • 251-986-8143 PICKS OF THE WEEK Cloud Atlas (R) -- In six stories set in vastly different places in time and space, a rich story of human experience and interaction unfolds. In history, modern days and the near and distant future, characters from each story are dimly aware of their connections to other people in the timeline. ItÕs ethereal, thoughtful and kind of sentimental at its heart. Actors play different characters across the six stories, suggesting that old souls are living new lives. Tom Hanks delivers fine performances in his different roles. The film is full of excellent visuals and special effects -- except for some of the makeup. Hanks especially looks odd in a few of his roles. ItÕs hard to mask that famous face and make someone so recognizable look like heÕs from a different time and ethnicity. Ò3:10 to YumaÓ (Criterion Collection) -- This 1957 classic Western is now available on Blu-ray. Dan Evans (Van Heflin) is a dirt-poor frontier rancher who captures a deadly outlaw, Ben Wade (Glenn Ford.) While they wait for the train, Ben offers the poor rancher $10,000 to let him go. WadeÕs gang mount up to rescue their leader, while the townspeople get antsy about the
outlaw in their midst. This is one of those Westerns where mind games are more prominent than gun fights. ThereÕs plenty of bang bang shootÕem up, but the real tension comes from masterful movie-making. Watching the two main characters try to pick each other apart as the minutes tick down to 3:10 is like watching a spark sizzle its way toward a powder keg. ÒLiz & DickÓ (NR) -- This made-for-TV biopic about Liz Taylor (Lindsay Lohan) and Richard Burton (Grant Bowler) fails on a few levels. It begins with LohanÕs dead-eyed stare going straight into the camera. SheÕs no Liz Taylor, and doesnÕt seem to be trying, either. Which is sad, considering that the whole affair was about venerating an icon while reviving the burned-out starlet. It also misses the mark for tolerable campiness -- the last ditch appeal for movies like this. ÒTomorrow You’re GoneÓ (R) -- Charlie (Stephen Dorff) is a small-time tough guy, fresh out of prison. His life was saved by a devilish criminal called The Buddha (Willem Dafoe). Now, Charlie has to commit a murder to repay his debt to the shadowy figure. Somehow, a porn actress (Michelle Monaghan) gets involved in the extra-thin plot. The movie hints that Dorff might be without all of his marbles -- but itÕs hard to care with a character this boring. Lots of grimacing and shadows, a little bit of partial nudity, not a lot of thrills.
