June 6 has been proclaimed Naitonal Yo-Yo-Day in commemoration of the birthday of yo-yo king Donald Duncan. Follow along and discover some facts you may not have known about this favorite toy. • The official description of a yo-yo is “an axle connected to two disks, with a length of twine looped around the axle.” The first historical evidence of a yo-yo was found in Greece from the year 500 B.C., a vase featuring a painting of a boy playing with the toy. A 1789 painting of France’s King Louis XVII, which hangs in the Louvre, shows the young monarch with a yo-yo as well. Two Ohio men received the first U.S. patent on the item in 1866. • In 1928, Pedro Flores launched the Yo-Yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara, California. Within a year, he had opened two more factories, employing a total of 600 workers, and producing 300,000 yo-yo’s every day. By the end of another year, Donald Duncan had purchased all of Flores’ assets and had the name “yo-yo” registered as a trademark, meaning only he could use that name for the toy. • Duncan moved the entire operation to Luck, Wisconsin in 1946, and the community became known as the “Yo-Yo Capital of the World,” cranking out 3,600 yo-yo’s per hour. For 14 years, maple wooden yo-yo’s were manufactured, using 1,000,000 board feet every year. Plastic yo-yo’s came along in 1960. • Competitors of Duncan didn’t like that he had the exclusive rights to the word “yo-yo” and fought for the rights to use it. Unfortunately for the Duncan company, in 1965, after a long and expensive court battle, a Federal Court of Appeals ruled that the trademark for the word itself was not valid. Duncan lost its rights, and profits diminished to the point that the company had to declare bankruptcy three years later. They were bought out by Flambeau and surrendered the company and even the famous name of Duncan. • Well-known yo-yo tricks include “sleeping,” which keeps a yoyo spinning at the end of its uncoiled string. Looping keeps the body of the yo-yo in constant motion without sleeping, while “walking the dog” involves throwing a strong sleeper, then gently allowing the yo-yo to touch the floor, where it rolls forward like a dog on a leash. • Enthusiasts can see the world’s largest yo-yo at the National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico, California. It measures 50 inches (127 cm) high and weighs 256 lbs. (116 kg.). The museum also houses yo-yo’s dating back to the 1920s. Chico is home to the National Yo-Yo Contest each October. • The yo-yo was first taken into space in April of 1985 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery when NASA introduced their Toys in Space project. • America’s National Toy Hall of Fame was established in 1998. Located in Rochester, New York, it pays tribute to those toys and games that have maintained their popularity over many years. In order to be considered for the honor, a toy must be “widely recognized, respected, and remembered,” foster learning and creativity, be more than a passing fad, as well as show innovation. The yo-yo was inducted into the Hall at its inception, along with the kite, rocking horse, jigsaw puzzle, Checkers, and doll houses, among many others.

Check us out on Facebook Blasting Belly Fat With all the gadgets and gizmos available that promise six-pack abs, you might think we should be a nation of strapping Adonises. However, the current U.S. obesity epidemic would indicate otherwise. Stephen Ball, University of Missouri Extension exercise physiologist, says sit-ups and crunches will tighten your abdominal muscles, but you will still have the same layer of fat sitting on top of those muscles. “Exercise equipment manufacturers mislead us with flashy infomercials showing beer bellies transforming into defined midriffs with the use of simple devices ... usually in just minutes a day!” Ball said. Aerobic exercises like bicycling, jogging or running are the best way to lose body fat, Ball says. These exercises raise your heart rate and cause your body to draw upon its fat stores for energy. The places where the body stores fat can affect health, Ball says. Exercise, and a sensible diet, will help shrink those problem spots over time. Bottom line, there is no device or magic bullet for getting into shape. According to Ball, a combination of strength exercises, aerobic exercise and a sensible diet will, over time, put you on the road to health and fitness. Include these belly-fat busters into a sensible diet: Eggs: They not only keep you satisfied longer, they also help you consume fewer calories all day long due to their high protein (about six grams per egg) and the healthy fat in the yolk. Organic eggs are high in omega-3s. When you combine omega-3s with exercise, studies have shown you can decrease abdominal fat. Almond milk: One cup of plain, unsweetened almond milk has 35 to 40 calories; a cup of skim milk has 90. It also contains no sugar and is fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Almond milk is available in a variety of flavors, including dark chocolate and vanilla. Chia seeds: These power-packed seeds help to lower blood sugar, reduce hunger and are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids. Blueberries: Berries are high in fiber and lower in sugar than other fruits, so they help keep blood sugar from spiking. Blueberries in particular help melt fat. Grapefruit: During a recent study, when obese adults on a calorie-restricted diet consumed either half a grapefruit, half a cup of 100 percent grapefruit juice or half a cup of water before their three daily meals for 12 weeks, they significantly decreased weight and waist circumference, dropping an average of 15 pounds per person.

Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah): This whole grain from Peru is a plant seed related to spinach that’s packed with fiber and protein to help keep you slim. My recipe for Quinoa with Cinnamon and Fruit is a great way to start the day, will keep hunger at bay and helps to blast belly fat! (Additional information provided by Stephen D. Ball, State Specialist and Associate Professor, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, University of Missouri.) Quinoa With Fruit and Cinnamon Quinoa is simple and easy to cook, like rice. In fact, you can cook quinoa in a rice cooker. Breakfast quinoa can be prepared ahead, covered and refrigerated for several days. To reheat, add some more almond milk and warm it in the microwave. 2 cups quinoa 4 cups almond milk, plain or vanilla 2 or 3 cinnamon sticks or 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons agave syrup, honey or brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract 1/8 teaspoon salt Toppings: Toasted nuts or coconut, fresh or dried fruit, nut butters, chia or flax seeds 1. Cover quinoa with cool water and soak for 5 minutes in a 4-quart pot. Soaking helps quinoa to cook evenly and loosens any dust, chaff or saponin (usually removed in processing), which can give the quinoa a bitter taste. Pour the quinoa into a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cool, running water while stirring the quinoa with your fingers. Shake the strainer to remove any water. Set quinoa aside. 2. Place milk and cinnamon (sticks or ground) in saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Watch carefully as the milk can bubble up quickly and scorch. Stir in the strained quinoa and return to boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Let quinoa and milk simmer about 10 minutes. Stir in sugar, vanilla or almond extract and a pinch of salt. Cover and continue to simmer until all the milk is absorbed, another 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Remove quinoa from heat and allow it to sit five minutes with lid on. Fluff quinoa gently with a fork and serve with milk, fruit, nuts, chia or flax seeds, or whatever toppings you like, and serve immediately. Makes 4 servings.

White House Cookbook Q: I have a copy of the White House cookbook that was published during the administration of President Grover Cleveland in 1887. It was issued by the F.I. Gillette Publishing Company and is quite interesting. -- Ella, Pembroke, Ontario, Canada A: Most of the White House cookbooks have distinctive white covers and sell for about $35 to $50 each, depending on both condition and edition. *** Q: While cleaning out my dad’s desk, I discovered a stack of old stock certificates from the 1950s. Although I suspect they aren’t worth anything, I hesitate to toss them. Is there a way I can see if any are still negotiable? -- Beth, Hammond, La. A: Pierre Bonneau is the man to contact. He is CEO of Stock Research International, a business that researches stocks and conducts auctions of older certificates several times a year. A stock may be worthless as a stock, but if it is signed by a heavy hitter such as Thomas Edison or Henry Ford it can be quite valuable. To find out if your stocks have any value, contact Bonneau at P.O. Box 2359, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568; ssi@ stocksearchintl.com; and 800-538-4523. *** Q: My uncle worked at Coca-Cola throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. He saved promotional products, and they now fill six large boxes. I don’t know what we should do with this collection. Any advice? -- Sue, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: I would begin by contacting the Coca-Cola Collectors Club, which has thousands of members scattered throughout the United States. The addresses are PMB 609, 4780 Ashford-Dunwoody Road, Suite A, Atlanta, GA 30338; and cocacolaclub.org. There also are several excellent price guides available at www.amazon.com.

Sandals Read: Exodus 3:1-5 Then [God] said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” (v. 5) When I visit a friend’s house, I like to take off my shoes before entering as a sign of respect and cleanliness. Moses had to take off his sandals for a bigger reason. While tending his flocks, Moses saw a shrub on fire, yet not burning up. Curious, he approached the shrub. God called out from the fire: “Moses, Moses! Don’t come too close. And take off your sandals—this is holy ground.”

Fast-forward several centuries. Jesus heals the sick, raises the dead, and proclaims good news. Jesus’ disciple, Peter, recognizes that he’s the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. One memorable evening in an upper room, Peter took off his sandals in God’s presence. But this time, Jesus—God incarnate—wants to wash Peter’s filthy feet! Peter knows he’s undeserving. But Jesus says, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me” (John 13:8). So Peter readily agrees. In order to approach a holy God, we must go through Jesus. He alone makes us clean enough to stand in God’s presence.
Moses obeys. Good thing too. Later in the Old Testament, God kills Israelites for disobeying his instructions about the need for cleanliness in approaching his holiness. Moses’ sandals remind us that sinful people are unfit to stand before a holy God, except on his terms.
Prayer: Lord, you make us holy through Jesus. We praise you and thank you.

The corporate anointing is much greater than the individual anointing. When Solomon’s temple was dedicated, the Glory of God moved in. It looked like a cloud and filled all His house. A Note From the Editor Every spring two things are displayed, without fail, in great magnitude - severe weather and the resiliency of the human spirit. While severe weather, in these days of technology, is readily predicted the overwhelming outpouring of kindness and selflessness displayed by mankind often brings waves of emotion. Whether it’s those digging through debris or others digging deep into their pocket, God’s finest work is displayed in the wake of tragedy. I remember my mother telling the story of my great grandmother, as a young girl, being swept up in an Alabama tornado and eventually finding herself clinging to a tree once the twister had passed. Fortunately, she did not fall victim to the storm and I can only imagine how, with no modern-day warnings, the sight, sound and eventual uplift of a tornado would shake one to the core. It’s certainly a memory any storm victim would carry with them for the remainder of their days. In experiencing the aftermath of a tornado of great magnitude, I can distinctly remember two things - the smell of splintered wood, trees, creosote treated poles and uprooted dirt. The second memory is the kindness of strangers, who were on the spot for weeks offering a helping hand, food, water, necessities and a listening ear. I can recall fighting back tears each time someone would approach and ask if they could help in any way and I was simply a bystander. For those who have just suffered through mother nature’s wrath the recovery will undoubtedly be long and daunting, but when the cloud of heavy-heartedness clears many are sure to find an experience that carries its’ own reward. Be blessed, Audrey Chambers

PICKS OF THE WEEK “A Good Day to Die Hard” (R) -- In the fifth film in the “Die Hard” series, nothing good happens. Sure, there are explosions, car stunts and combat, but it all meshes into a soothing rhythm that lulls you to sleep. All the whooshing and blamming and dry chuckles amount to nothing but the churning of a washing machine -- background noise for an afternoon nap. By the second act, you’ll be in a peaceful slumberland far away from stale plots, flat jokes and thoughtless screenwriting. John McClane (Bruce Willis) hears that his son (Jai Courtney) is being sent to Russian prison and decides to look into the situation. You could have a better time by wandering into a garage sale and looking through stacks of VHS tapes to find the blandest, most slapdash ‘80s action flick in the box.
R encounters a still-living girl named Julie (Teresa Palmer), his heart starts to beat again, and he’s able to suppress his urge to eat her brains. So maybe it’s not the love story of a generation, but it’s a lot better than expected. With surprising wit and style, “Warm Bodies” rises above the predicted level of Twilight-but-with-zombies. Check it out if you have a strong stomach and you want to see something cute.
“Warm Bodies” (PG-13) -- This supernatural romantic comedy for young adults dares to make zombies loveable. After flesh-eating undead take over most of the world, love is still in the air. Enter R (Nicholas Hoult), a handsome youth-turned-zombie whose inner-monologue guides us through the movie. Turns out that being a zombie is a lot like floating through normal life. When
“Brooklyn Castle” (PG) -- This documentary focuses on five chess champions who attend I.S. 138 in Brooklyn, N.Y., a school where almost 70 percent of students live below the poverty line. Where some schools have impeccable athletics programs with stunning records, this school develops students into talented competitive chess players. The film stunned audiences at festivals with its caring and
“Identity Thief ” (R) -- Diana (Melissa McCarthy) has a love of shopping, especially when she’s using somebody else’s name to run up the bills. Sandy (Jason Bateman) is the victim of Diana’s scheme, so it’s his credit she’s ruining. When Diana skips her court date, it’s Sandy’s name on the arrest warrant. So Sandy flies from his home in Denver to fetch Diana and sort things out -- thinking she looks harmless enough. What follows is a mismatched-duo comedy with a few giggles here and there. Most of the humor is meant to be shock-laughs, but it’s not surprising enough to be shocking in most cases.
