“Bazooka Joe and His Gang: The 60th Anniversary Collection”

by The Topps Company, Inc. Reviewed by Larry Cox During the Christmas season of 1938, a Brooklyn company began producing a penny gum that came in four flavors: peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon and pepsin. The gum was usually displayed near cash registers in stores, and customers were encouraged to take their change in its product. Even though the Topps Company experimented with several candy bars, it was the gum that generated the profits.

In 1947, Topps introduced “Bazooka, the Atom Bubble Gum,” which sold for 5 cents, each package featuring a miniature comic strip and premiums used as a sales aid for both consumers and retailers. Bazooka Joe and His Gang made their debut in 1953. The gang consisted of Bazooka Joe, Butch (who could lick any guy in the gang except, maybe, Bazooka Joe), Janet Orville or Pesty, Bazooka Joe’s kid brother, Lil Pats, Joe’s dog Walkie Talkie, Hungry Herman and Sarge, the neighborhood cop.

Soon, almost every kid in the country was buying the gum and reading the comic strips. To honor the 60th anniversary of these comics, the best strips were borrowed from the collection of Jeff Shepherd and are featured in this nostalgic new book.

There are essays by Talley Morse, son of Bazooka Joe artist and co-creator Wesley Morse, Nancy Morse and Kirk Taylor, along with contributions from Topps insiders. Although they offer context, it is the reproductions of 200 classic Bazooka Joe comics that trigger the memories. Included is the very first series, reproduced in its entirety for the first time in more than 40 years.

This collection has original Bazooka Joe jokes, ads for mail-order merchandise, rare advertising and promo images, and original art from Eddie Boy’s Topps archives. As a special bonus, there are four Bazooka Joe trading Cookout! cards tucked inside the back cover. Holliday Grainger of “The Borgias” has been tapped to play Bonnie Parker, with Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Sarah Hyland, Elizabeth Reaser, Lane Garrison, Austin Hebert and Dale Dickey all set to co-star. The four-hour two-night event miniseries will air simultaneously on History, Lifetime and A&E, and will be directed by Oscar nominee Bruce Beresford.

For those unfamiliar with the real-life events, “Bonnie & Clyde” retells the fascinating tale of the couple whose crime spree enraptured the Depression-era American public. Clyde was always able to stay one step ahead of the law as he and Bonnie escaped capture time and again. His one blind spot was Bonnie, who was intent on becoming famous, fed on the media attention and pushed Clyde to commit riskier and more dangerous crimes to generate bigger headlines, and make them the most famous criminals of the modern era.

“Bonnie & Clyde” will air later this year. I’ll let you know the date as soon as I know. *** Q: What has Val Kilmer been up to? I loved him in “MacGruber,” but haven’t seen him in anything lately.

by Ms. Kathleen Baskin. A wine tasting was held featuring the wines from Tropical Fruit Wineries. Partners In Growth is a Business networking group that meets each Thursday morning at Amelia’s Deli.

The purpose of Partners In Grouth is to promote the members business through networking and to work on projects to better the community. There are currently 36 members in the group.

Madison Square Garden considers itself to be the “world’s most famous arena.” That, like most anything ever said in New York City, is debatable. The Coliseum in Rome probably has a pretty good claim to the title. Of the two, one has failed to keep up with the times and suffered from eras of chronic mismanagement; the Coliseum on the other hand, though failing to install luxury boxes or widen its concourses, still ranks as a premier tourist destination.

But there are similarities. Paul McCartney, for instance, has played both venues to the delight of thousands. Both have provided the masses with bread and circuses, both have restrooms best described as vomitoriums, and neither has hosted a champion in years.

So many greats have been shown the door in New York -- at the Garden, 57 coaches have walked out the doors in 86 years, and in their wake, only six championship banners hang from the rafters.

It has long been known that any regime, even amid rampant famine and poverty, could rely on loyalty and platitudes to hold back the teeming masses for a while. A leader could not, however, hold onto power without the support of the army. Former Rangers coach John Tortorella did not heed that lesson.

After barely beating the Washington Capitals in the opening round of the NHL playoffs, the Rangers were sent packing by the Boston Bruins with little effort. The Rangers power play was historically bad, and Tortorella’s immature, unprofessional attitude toward the media won’t soon be forgotten. But let the record show his regime ended when he derided one of his best soldiers, Carl Hagelin, at a press conference.

“He stinks,” Tortorella said, stabbing himself over and over, losing the locker room and his career as Rangers coach all at once.

Tortorella called the season, one in which many had the Rangers picked to win the Stanley Cup, “a sidestep.” His general, Henrik Lundqvist, the best goalie in the NHL, disagreed. Tortorella had signed a contract extension in March. Lundqvist’s tour of duty was to end after this season.

“It’s a step backward,” Lundqvist said after the series.

And that’s where Glen Sather, the Rangers’ president and general manager, stepped in.

Lundqvist was not going to walk. Sather came to bury Tortorella ... not to praise him.

“I think he was shocked,” Sather said during the post-termination press conference.

Nobody remembers Gen. George Custer as the victor at the Battle of Dinwiddie Courthouse. Joan of Arc will forever be set on fire, Napoleon will always have his Waterloo, and Caesar will always have his steps of the Roman senate.

Tortorella got out of line, and he got whacked. He did it to himself. New York has too many gangsters waiting in the wings, and one of them happens to be the legendary Mark Messier, captain of the 1994 Stanley Cup Rangers squad.

Because history, after all, is written by the winners.

As the weather warms in a hurry, most of us are searching for cool, light meals in a hurry. Hearty salads are always a great lunch or dinner choice for both the cook and the crowd. Mix up the meats and cheeses in this recipe for a little variety and substituting chicken breasts or large shrimp can easily make this salad a complete meal.

Chopped Italian Salad Ingredients •3 cups torn Romaine lettuce •1 can (15 ounces) garbanzo beans or chickpeas, rinsed and drained •1 jar (6-1/2 ounces) marinated artichoke hearts, drained and chopped •1 medium bell pepper, chopped •2 medium tomatoes, chopped •1 can (2-1/4 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained •5 slices deli ham, chopped •10 slices pepperoni, chopped •3 slices provolone cheese, chopped •2 green onions, chopped •1/4 cup olive oil •2 tablespoons red wine vinegar •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/8 teaspoon pepper •3 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese •Pepperoncini, optional Directions •In a large bowl, combine the first 10 ingredients. For dressing, in a small bowl, whisk the oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over salad; toss to coat. Sprinkle with cheese. Top with pepperoncini, if desired. Yield: 10 servings.
