TIDBITS® CONSIDERS PIRATES
by Janet Spencer After Spanish explorers established regular trade routes with the Americas, a new industry was born: Pirating. Come along with Tidbits as we sail the high seas! • Pirating reached its height in the years between 1650 and 1730. Pirate ships didn’t roam around hoping to chance upon a victim; they patrolled known shipping routes. During this time, many governments (particularly England) supported piracy, encouraging it as a cheap way to get expensive goods into their country. Piracy became so prevalent that sea-faring trade nearly ground to a complete halt. At this point governments began working against the plunder, tracking down pirates and hanging them in public. The last pirate of this era ever hanged in England was strung up in 1840, and in 1862 the last one was hung in America. • In the mid-1600s, there were about 50,000 British sailors making an honest living on the sea, and probably somewhere between 1,000 and 5,000 British pirates making a dishonest living at the same time. During this period, about 80 pirates served on each pirate ship. The career of a pirate generally lasted only a few years or so before they were drowned or killed or jailed. Although some made a fortune and retired, it was more common for the ones who made money to squander it in short order, necessitating another trip. MYTHS & LEGENDS • The image of the typical pirate that’s been passed down through history is partly true and partly false. Pirates often wore a scarf tied around their head to keep their hair out of their face and to prevent sweat from running into their eyes. They frequently went barefoot which gave them

better traction on slippery decks. Pirates wore earrings because they thought it would improve their vision. (Acupuncturists say this isn’t far from the truth.) Burying their treasure is not something that happened often, although there are a few cases on record. Leaving a treasure behind left it vulnerable. Most often plunder was carried to the nearest port and sold. Likewise, walking the plank was a rare occurrence. In fact, there are only two pirates known to have used that method. One was Major Stede Bonnet, who is credited with inventing it, and the other was a Dane called Captain Derdrake. More commonly, men were simply thrown overboard. Contrary to popular belief, a pirate ship tended to be a fairly democratic workplace. A charter establishing ship rules would be drawn up at the start of each voyage with each sailor contributing to the list and expected to stick to it. Disability pensions were awarded for pirates wounded in battle. Usually, the captain was elected by secret ballot and could be voted out of office. Likewise, ships’ officers were often elected democratically. Many pirate captains preferred to win their battles with a show of force rather than bloodthirsty slaughter. Booty was generally divided fairly, with the captain receiving a share and a half; officers receiving a share and a quarter; and crew getting one share each. Nobody on the pirate ship got paid anything at all unless they captured something of value. Most ships carried musicians on board to provide entertainment. PIRATE WAYS In the late 1600s, when most of humanity was still illiterate, ships flew flags with pictures on them indicating their identity and intention. Flags might depict an hourglass (indicating time running out for surrender), or a sword (indicating willingness to fight), or a skull and crossbones, which was by far the most popular design. The color of a flag also sent messages: A black flag meant the pirates would give quarter, and would spare the lives of the captured crew if the treasure was handed over without a fight. If the victims refused to lay down their weapons, a red flag (preferably dipped in blood) would be run up. If a red flag was flying, it meant no quarter would be given and the crew could expect to die. Seeing the sight of a red flag with skull and crossbones was often all it took to convince the victims to give up and hand all their goods over. After all, the cargo on board usually didn’t even belong to them. A white flag indicated surrender. The French phrase ‘joli rouge’ means ‘pretty red’ which is thought to be the reason the pirate flag is called the Jolly Roger. Cannon shot was carefully aimed to destroy the sails and masts of the ships being captured without damaging the ship itself. Pirates needed to immobilize the ship but did not want to destroy it. Treasure didn’t do much good if it was sitting on the bottom of the ocean, and the boat itself was a prize worth keeping. Cannonballs were often made imperfectly on purpose because they would make more noise in flight if they were not perfectly round, and noisy cannonballs were more intimidating than silent cannonballs. The fierce Gujarati pirates made captured merchants swallow an emetic called tamarindi mixed with salt sea water which would cause them to vomit, throwing up any gemstones they may have swallowed prior to being caught. TALK LIKE A PIRATE The word ‘pirate’ comes from the Greek ‘peiran’ meaning ‘to attack.’ The word ‘careen’ comes from the French word ‘carene’ meaning the keel of a ship. Boats that collected barnacles and seaweed moved sluggishly in the water so they needed to be cleaned regularly, especially if they were pirate ships that needed to outmaneuver their victims. The boat would be tilted on its side to be scraped, repaired, and re-caulked. ‘Careening’ has now come to mean lurching or swerving while in motion. Coins could once be cut into pieces to make change. A dollar coin could be broken into eight bits. Two bits equaled a quarter of a dollar. That’s how pirates got pieces of eight and England got the halfpenny and the farthing, which was originally a ‘fourthings’ or a fourth of a penny. After the discovery that vitamin C in lemons, oranges, and limes cures scurvy, sailors were supplied with citrus fruits during voyages, leading to their nickname of ‘limeys.’ Booty comes from the German root ‘bute’ meaning ‘exchange.’

Make Block Prints From Foam Trays There aren’t many Styrofoam-style containers that make it into our house these days, now that we consume fewer pre-packaged food items. But once in awhile, a take-home box from a restaurant or a fresh fruit/vegetable tray sneaks in. If you have some in your recycle bin, put them to use and make super-easy block
prints. Your kids can have fun all summer long setting up their own “print shop” indoors or out to make bookmarks, note cards, party invitations, art to frame and art to wear. This is a great way to spend creative time together with your kids, too, discovering the joy of making something beautiful from scratch. Here’s what you’ll need: --Recycled clean and unpatterned foam trays and plates from packaged fruits, vegetable and baked goods --Scissors --Ballpoint pen, pencil, chopstick or skewer --Tempera or acrylic paint, or water based ink for block printing --Paintbrush, foam paint roller or hand-inking roller (brayer) --Construction or watercolor paper Here’s the fun: 1. Set supplies on a newspaper-covered table. Trim off all curved edges of the trays with scissors to create a perfectly flat foam printing block. 2. Draw a picture or design by pressing firmly on the foam block with a pen or other suggested objects. If using a skewer, press with the blunt end. You may wish to draw a light design with a pencil first. Remember, the printed design will appear in reverse. For alphabet letters, you might wish to practice beforehand on a sheet of scratch paper, then look at them in a mirror to see how they would look when printed. 3. Apply the paint or ink evenly onto the printing block with a brush or roller. Avoid filling in the design. Carefully place your paper over the printing block, press gently or rub the back of the paper with the rounded side of a large spoon. Quickly peel away the print to keep from smearing the design. Make as many prints as you wish. Add more paint to the printing block as needed. If it becomes clogged, rinse with water, dry and reapply paint or ink. Tip: Hang a length of heavy string within kids’ reach from one wall or tree to another, and hang prints to dry. Extra idea: To make block prints on prewashed cotton shirts, aprons and tote bags, follow the above steps using fabric paints.

Make the Connection If you’re a veteran who is struggling to find ways to improve your life, perhaps because you’re dealing with a service-related issue, I invite you to take a look at Make the Connection, a website run by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Make the Connection is a one-stop site for a wide variety of concerns affecting veterans: homelessness, jobs and employment, family and friends, mental-health concerns, transitioning from the service, dealing with physical injury and more. Most impressive and useful is the Signs & Symptoms section. It’s long, with dozens of symptoms, including flashbacks, feeling on edge, noise or light irritation, confusion, trouble sleeping and nightmares, and more. Each section is broken into three parts. The first part is, “What can I do about it right away?” The steps aren’t silly, either; they’re ones a counselor or medical adviser likely would talk about first, things you can do at the moment to feel better and regain control. The second step is to make the connection with medical or mental-health advisers. The third step is links to immediate information. You even can customize the site to give information tailored more closely to who you are. Select from male/female, the era in which you served, the branch of service and whether you were exposed to combat. If you don’t have a computer, try to find one to use, possibly at your local library, and check in with Make the Connection at http://maketheconnection.net. You’ll likely find sources of information and help. Don’t miss the videos of veterans who talk about their own experiences. If you’re with a veterans service organization, especially if you’re in an advising capacity, look over the Make the Connection site and become familiar with what it has to offer the veterans you help.

1 teaspoon cumin seeds 2 tablespoons canola oil 1/2 small red onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 tablespoon ancho chile powder 2 teaspoons Spanish smoked paprika 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons molasses 1/2 cup water 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Kosher salt Pepper 8 ears corn, in their husks
1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling on medium. 2. In 10-inch skillet, toast seeds on medium-low 3 to 5 minutes or until fragrant. Transfer seeds to small bowl. Wipe out skillet. 3. In same skillet, heat oil on medium-high until hot, but not smoking. Add onion; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until softened, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; cook 30 seconds, stirring. Add ancho chile powder, paprika, cayenne and toasted cumin seeds; cook 1 minute, stirring frequently. Stir in molasses and water. Cook 3 to 5 minutes or until mixture thickens and water has evaporated, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool slightly. 4. In food processor, pulse butter, Worcestershire sauce and spice mixture until smooth. Add 1 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper; pulse until combined. Transfer mixture to small bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 days. To serve, allow to come to room temperature. 5. Meanwhile, pull husks of corn to stalk end without removing them. Strip away silk. Fold husks back into place and tie with kitchen twine. Place ears of corn in large bowl or pot and cover with cold water; add 1 tablespoon salt. Let stand 10 minutes. 6. Drain corn. Shake off excess water. Grill, covered, 15 to 20 minutes or until kernels are tender when pierced with paring knife, turning occasionally. To serve, remove husks and spread with spiced butter. Serves 8. ¥ Each serving: About 185 calories, 4g protein, 21g carbohydrates, 12g total fat (6g saturated), 2g dietary fiber, 23mg cholesterol, 155mg sodium.

Treating Animal Bites DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you tell me the best way to treat pet bites? I have three young children, and we live in a neighborhood where every family except us has at least one pet. Most are dogs. I don’t want to overreact to a tiny scratch, but I need to know what to do with a more serious bite. -- A.M. ANSWER: I’m limiting my remarks to cat and dog bites. Wild-animal bites require more involved treatment and are best taken care of in a hospital setting. A domesticated animal that has bitten a child or adult should be observed for 10 days to see if it exhibits signs of rabies. The threat of rabies is small, but maximal precautions have to be taken because rabies is such a deadly illness. Unprovoked bites from an animal raise the suspicion of rabies. Less-serious bites, the ones that can be treated at home, are copiously irrigated with sterile saltwater. Not many homes have sterile saltwater, so the bite should be washed with soap and water and then irrigated with tap water. After the irrigation, apply a disinfectant like Betadine (povidone iodine). Inspect the wound daily for any signs of infection -- skin redness or pus. If you see those signs, take the child to a doctor. If the child’s immunizations are up to date, all is well. If they are not, he or she needs a tetanus booster. If the child has had no tetanus immunizations, the series should begin right away. Wounds that are large, that bleed, that are quite deep or are in a place, like the face, where they might be deforming should be taken care of by a professional. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’m in my 60s and never had a major illness. I take no medicines. In the past three months, I have been wakened from sleep with a dull pain in the center of my chest. My husband told me to take Mylanta. I did, and got instant relief. What do you think of this pain? -- V.P. ANSWER: Pain that wakens a person from sleep must be taken seriously and ought to be reported to the family doctor. However, the response you got from taking Mylanta (an antacid) makes me think of GERD -- gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as heartburn. Stomach acid and digestive juices spurt into the esophagus, a structure not equipped to deal with them like the stomach can. If this nighttime pain of yours keeps coming back, put 6-inch blocks under the bedposts at the head of your bed to keep stomach juices in the stomach when you lie down. My first statement about nighttime pain has to be observed. You need to see the family doctor to be certain this is heartburn and not one of the many other serious possibilities. Dog Not Treated for Lyme Disease DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Barley” tested positive for Lyme disease at his annual checkup. However, the veterinarian said he doesn’t need treatment because the infection is not active. What does that mean? Should he get treatment anyway? -- Confused in Deerfield, Mass. DEAR CONFUSED: There’s a bit of controversy right now about how to treat dogs that test positive for Lyme disease. This disease, transmitted by ticks, is very widespread in the
northeastern United States. In fact, the MSPCA reports that 50 percent to 75 percent of dogs tested in New England may be positive for Lyme disease. Despite this high number, only about 10 percent of dogs that test positive develop “clinical illness” -- with symptoms like lethargy, fever, lameness and enlarged lymph nodes, according to Dr. Erika de Papp. So, there is much discussion about whether all positive dogs should be treated for the illness, or just those in which the disease is “active.” Because Barley tested positive for the disease, find out if the vet conducted a second test to find out if it’s active or was recently contracted. Whether he did so or not, ask the vet why your pet does not need treatment, or if he will in the future. To make sure the new summary you receive is actually from Medicare, start with the envelope. The return address will say Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Look for “Official Medicare Information” on the front and contact telephone numbers on the back. The changes to the form: Page 1 is a summary of your notice. It includes your name, deductible status and the status of all claims, including whether they’ve been approved. The total amount you may be billed and how many facilities (such as hospitals) submitted claims also are itemized. Page 2 offers tips on how to review the notice. There are instructions on how to check for possible fraud, how many Inpatient Hospital and Skilled Nursing Facility benefit days you’ve used, and a phone number to call. Page 3 is your Claims for Part A information, and includes where you were hospitalized, whether the claim was approved, how much Medicare paid and how much you might billed. Check the hospital dates carefully to make

sure you were actually there on those dates. The final page tells how to handle denied claims or file an appeal. To file an appeal, follow the step-by-step instructions. If you need help with it, there is a phone number to call, or Medicare suggests asking for help from the facility itself or a friend or family member. Don’t miss the date it must receive the appeal. At the bottom is the address of where to send the appeal.

They’re painted over, so scratches haven’t been a problem. But there are a few spots where heavy furniture or dropped items dinged and dented the wood. Is there a quick way to repair these spots? -- Carla in Taunton, Mass. A: There’s an interesting fix you can try, using a clothes iron and a damp towel to try and bring up the dent. Because the dent is a compression of the wood, using dampness and heat may help the wood to expand and minimize the dent. This technique is not one that I would recommend for floors with a heavy coat of wax (as some older floors do), because the heat may discolor the finish, but since your wood floor has just a coat or two of paint, you shouldn’t have much of a problem. ¥ It is still not known who made the following sage observation: “The difference between ‘involvement’ and Ôcommitment’ is like an eggsand-ham breakfast: The chicken was ‘involved’; the pig was ‘committed.’”
However, the paint may bubble or crack due to the initial damage and the expansion of the wood, so have some matching paint handy in order to touch up the area afterward. (As always, test a less-conspicuous area of the floor before making the repair.) First, dab the dent with a wet rag to soak the wood a bit. Wait a couple of minutes. While you’re waiting, fill the reservoir of your clothes iron and turn it on high, with full steam setting. Once the iron is hot, place a damp towel over the dent. Place the iron atop the towel, holding it directly over the dented area and trying to avoid the surrounding floor. Move the iron in a circular pattern while applying full steam, for about three minutes. Lift the towel to check your results. If the dent appears to be less deep, reapply the iron for a minute or so, checking each time until the dent is almost level with the rest of the floor. Once the area has cooled, repair the cracked or bubbling paint over the dent. Sand away the damaged paint, wipe clean with a damp cloth, and touch up the spot with matching paint.

Warners has high expectations for its new release of “The Man of Steel.” It was budgeted at $175 million, but cost $225 million to make, plus an additional $175 million to publicize. Do you have a move in your future? There is more to a successful move than just calling the first moving-company number you find in the telephone book. As with any transaction that involves an exchange of money for services, there is a possibility of being scammed unless you’ve very careful. The earlier you start the process of finding a mover, the more likely you will find one you can trust to do the job you need. Carefully review all the various sections and become familiar with the possible pitfalls and steps you should take. Be sure to read the Moving Fraud Prevention Checklist, Red Flags of Moving Fraud and Moving Broker Checklist. Learn about binding versus non-binding estimates, what to do if the mover refuses to deliver your goods unless you pay more money (a violation of Federal regulation), and your rights and responsibility. When it comes to hiring a mover, start with recommendations from friends. No matter how highly recommended a mover is, however, you’ll want to get estimates from more than just one. The more movers you interview, the better your chances of hiring an honest one that won’t damage your property. Count on conducting six to 10 interviews, on the phone and in person, before you decide. Get written estimates that include the estimated weight of your goods and all charges for moving. Ask about possible extra charges for packing mirrors, mattresses and breakables. Refuse to sign any blank documents or documents that are not completely filled out. Granted, all of the information on the documents cannot be completed, but the only blanks should involve the actual weight of the goods, which will be determined at shipping. Refuse, too, to sign any “revised written estimate” after the goods are loaded on the truck and the mover wants to increase the cost. With the exception of the exact shipping weight (which should end up being very close to the written estimated weight), nothing should change after the goods are loaded. Warning flags that should kill any deal in selecting a mover: No local address or license, no company trucks with the name on the side, lack of information on insurance on the website and giving an estimate of costs over the phone. Consult the Better Business Bureau in your area before you make a final decision on a mover.

You don’t have to be a rocket schientist. to learn how to chip the ball properly. What it does take is a lot of practice and study of technique to enable you to always get it right. The following steps help break down a chip shot in order to better understand it: 1. Grab your club - preferably a 7-iron. You’ll need to stand up close to the target line. 2. Keeping your weight in the center of your stance, then, open up your front foot and the shoulders toward the target. Note that you should literally be facing the hole. 3. Take a solid, yet light, grip on the club. 4. Look at the green. Select the exact spot where you want the ball to land. 5. Important. For just a brief moment, visualize your swing making perfect impact with the ball, and having it land in that exact spot that you picked out.
