“Duel with the Devil: The True Story of How Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr Teamed Up to Take on America’s First Sensational Murder Mystery” by Paul Collins Reviewed by Larry Cox During the final weeks of 1799, a struggle for power was triggered by two factions. Alexander Hamilton led the Federalists, and his rival, Aaron Burr, supported the populist Republicans. As the two most prominent lawyers in New York, both realized that as the national election approached, Manhattan could be the swing district that determined the next president. Their animosity was swept aside when the body of a young Quaker woman was found in a well owned by Burr. In fact, they created a legal dream team to prevent a miscarriage of justice from occurring in America’s first sensational murder case. Elma Sands was being courted by a handsome young carpenter named Levi Weeks. When Elma’s muff was found, it was a clue that led searchers to Burr’s well. Citizens were outraged by the brutal murder, and suspicion immediately focused on Weeks, who was charged and jailed. Weeks’ brother, an influential architect, possessed the financial resources to hire a legal dream team, Hamilton and Burr. The two lawyers were convinced that Weeks was innocent. They put aside their differences to defend the young man and prevent a conviction fueled by public anger. The real danger was that Weeks might be lynched before a trial could even be scheduled. Levi was eventually acquitted, but murder was never solved. This is more than an account of an old case, it isEddie an absorbing legal Boy’s thriller. Collins not only writes about the crime but also makes the Cookout! first break in the case in more than 200 years as heStarts reveals theFri name of 5pm the likely killer. This is a cold case that has suddenly become quite5pm! hot. Ends Sun

Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly, July 10 & 17 of 2013, For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call 251-504-0149 Q: Can you tell me what my favorite actor, Eric Roberts, has been up to? My wife and I recently became vegans, and I’ve read that Eric is too. Is that true? -- Paul S., via e-mail
A: The diverse and talented actor recently played against type as a nurturing grandfather in the UP TV original movie “The Perfect Summer” (which premiered July 13 and airs throughout the month), where he co-stars with “American Idol” alum Jason Castro, as well as Adam Horner and Sydney Penny. When I spoke with Eric recently about his role, he told me one of the main reasons he accepted it: “I haven’t played a grandfather yet. As you know, most roles I’ve played have been anything but normal, and I am not really the grandfather type. I enjoyed playing that. Playing a guy who is normal was fun for me.” About his vegan lifestyle, Eric confided: “It’s really hard when you’re on the road [filming] in the South. But you don’t have to kill animals to eat. I just don’t like the idea that we slaughter so many beasts to eat. I asked my wife to help me be a vegan. She leads me around by the nose when I am home and keeps me on track. When I’m away, I’m a vegetarian.” *** Q: What has Dirk Benedict, from the original “A-Team,” been doing lately? -- Arlene in Rochester, N.Y. A: Dirk, who also starred in the original “Battlestar Galactica,” has been embracing his sci-fi roots in recent years. He’s provided his vocal talents for a number of “Battlestar”-related videogames, attended numerous sci-fi conventions and co-starred in the original SyFy channel movie “Earthstorm.” Also, if you saw the 2010 big-screen version of “The A-Team,” then you know he made a cameo appearance, dispensing helpful tanning advice to the new “Face,” Bradley Cooper. *** Q: I just read that production on “Hell on Wheels” might be delayed due to flooding in Calgary, where the series is filmed. Do you have any info on that? -- Windell S., Port Wentworth, Ga. A: Production of the Western -- which centers on the settlement that accompanied the building of the transcontinental railroad on 1865 -- was delayed a bit as rising waters flooded the show’s set. Instead of season three premiering on AMC on Aug. 3, it has been pushed back to Saturday, Aug. 10. The two-hour season premiere begins at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Roasted Apricots and Pistachios Roasting fruit is a great way to bring out its inherent sweetness. This recipe combines succulent roasted apricots, toasted pistachios and tangy goat cheese for a healthier (but still satisfying) summer dessert. 8 fresh apricots, halved 1 tablespoon sugar 2 ounces goat cheese 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint leaves 1/2 cup pistachios, salted, toasted and chopped 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Place apricot halves on foil-lined jelly-roll pan, cut sides up; sprinkle with sugar. Bake 20 minutes or until tender and browned. 3. Divide goat cheese among hot apricots; sprinkle with mint and pistachios. Serves 4.

Images Are Larger Than They Appear Hockey fans are sick of hearing about it and NBA fans are reluctant to admit it, but both sports suffer from a bit of an image problem. The NHL lockout shortened the season to 48 games, but that strangely seemed to work for them. The NBA started on time, but provided very little in the way of a dramatic storyline. The NBA regular seasons have a tendency to go just the way you thought they would, and this year was no different. The Nets moving to Brooklyn provided something to chat about, and with the exception of strong run by the Knicks and Clippers, and the Celtics implosion, it was all “Kobe and Lebron” until the playoffs. Meanwhile, the NHL season seemed just right. I know die-hard fans and the entire nation of Canada want to see every game, all the time, but for the casual fan, the shortened season distilled the season into games between division rivals. Every game seemed to matter for once during a regular season. And they lost the All-Star game due to the lockout! These were good things. The Chicago Blackhawks started the season with a 21-0-3 unbeaten streak, shattering records along the way. Though not favored to do so, and absent a star of Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby-like fame, it went on to win the Stanley Cup. The finals versus the Boston Bruins were some of the greatest hockey games I have ever seen. I gladly stayed up well past my bedtime to watch those overtime classics. If my kid was a little bit older, I would have woken him up to watch them, too. The Miami Heat won the NBA championship. Nobody was surprised. With an all-star team led by Lebron James and Chris Bosh, the Heat became the team everyone hoped to see lose (save for the Miami fans). But as the NBA Finals lumbered on in characteristic smash foul style, something happened during the championship round: a classic match up between Tim Duncan and the white-hat San Antonio Spurs and King James’ Heat. Game 6, in which the Heat came back to win, and a game 7 featuring death-defying shots and stunning grace were two of the greatest games of all-time, and nobody disputes that. Image problem? What image problem? With the exception of the Chicago Sun-Times post-Stanley Cup photography (its front page after winning the Cup featured a dour-faced player holding the Cup like a crate of cabbages on a truck dock. Great time to fire your entire photography staff, Sun-Times), the celebrations and the ratings from both finals were enough to dispel any notion. The image problems suggested earlier were larger than they appeared. These two teams made one thing crystal clear: the NBA and NHL can look at themselves in the mirror and like what they see staring back at them.
