Restart Your Credit! TIDBITS® GOES TO THE DANCE
by Janet Spencer Studies have shown that dancing reduces stress and tension and can also help prevent heart disease. Come along with Tidbits as we look at different kinds of dancing! THE HULA • ‘Hula’ is a Hawaiian word meaning simply, ‘dance.’ Originally, only men were allowed to dance the hula. It originated as a method of passing history down, with every single movement carrying a meaning that helped tell the story. The movements were accompanied by drumming and chanting. (Modern hula is more commonly accompanied by ukeleles and guitars.) Hula dances also honored and appeased the gods in religious ceremonies (particularly the volcano gods) and paid homage to leaders. The hula was once outlawed by missionaries who considered it sinful. But David Kalakaua, King of Hawaii from 1874 through 1891, reinstated the tradition of hula dancing, thereby earning his nickname, the ‘Merrie Monarch.’ Each year, the Merrie Monarch Festival is held in his honor. The peak of the festival is the hula competition, with both men and women dancing. An authentic hula skirt requires the leaves of about 60 ti plants, takes about four hours to weave, and wears out in 3 to 5 days of use. DANCING SHOWMANSHIP • In the 1800s people were fascinated with Native Americans, so P.T. Barnum imported a band of Sioux from Iowa to perform in his New York museum. He hired them to perform their ritualistic dances on stage in front of an audience. Their favorite was the war dance, but they perTurn to page 2 for more!

Tidbits of Baldwin County Distributed Weekly, October 16 & 23 of 2013, For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call 251-262-6020 AKC, USDA at Odds Over Breeder Rules
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Is it true that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is banning professional dog breeding? -Concerned Owner in Iowa DEAR CONCERNED: Nope, it’s not true. However, the USDA has implemented some new rules that will bring Internet-based pet breeders and sellers under the regulation of the Animal Welfare Act. The rules narrow the definition of a retail pet store and expand the agency’s oversight of pet breeders. On the plus side, the new rules could make it harder for notorious “puppy mills” to exist, because breeders with four or more breeding females, and those who sell puppies “sight unseen,” now have to be licensed through the USDA. On the negative side, argues the American Kennel Club, the rules are nebulous in certain areas. For example, de-
termining which females are truly “breeding females” can make things harder for small breeders and hobbyists. “The AKC remains extremely concerned that the rule will make it difficult for individuals to self-report, as they would not be able to know -- without an APHIS inspection ... before applying for a license -- whether they would be required to obtain a license.” And new standards for facilities could make it much harder for hobbyists and small breeders to raise dogs in their homes. “It is not reasonable to expect small breeders, who keep a handful of dogs and make a choice to raise dogs in their homes, to be able to meet exacting USDA kennel engineering standards that are designed for large commercial wholesale or research kennels,” the AKC said. So, dog breeders still will be in business when the new rules take effect in November, but they may have more work cut out for them. Cat and rabbit breeders also are affected.

formed it so convincingly that Barnum was afraid someone would get hurt. So he asked them to perform the more sedate wedding dance instead. They agreed, as long as Barnum agreed to provide a new red woolen blanket so the bridegroom would have a gift to give the bride’s father. Barnum agreed, since the blanket cost only $10 and his box-office receipts were very good. But then they informed him that he must buy a new wedding blanket for every performance. Since the show was performed twice a day, six days a week, Barnum was spending $120 a week on blankets. Soon the tribe got homesick for their native land. Barnum paid their passage back to Iowa. • In 1942, the impresarios for Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus decided they wanted to teach their circus elephants to dance. They contacted choreographer George Balanchine and told him to find a composer to help him. He chose Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, and the telephone conversation went like this: “I need you to compose a piece of music for me.” “What kind of music?” “A polka.” “For whom?” “Elephants.” “How old?” “Young!” “OK, if they are very young, I’ll do it!” The result was “Circus Polka” and it was performed 425 times. • Aristotle told the story of the city of Sybaris, where the horses were taught to dance to the music of a pipe. When the Sybarites went to war against the Crotonians, the Crotonians brought along a lot of pipes. On the battlefield, the pipers began to play, the Sybarian horses began to dance, and the riders were easily slaughtered. DANCE WORD ORIGINS • The old English word ‘jouk’ means to dance, and from that we get our juke box. • Thespis was a poet, dancer, and theatrical manager around 500 BC. He did so much to promote theater that he is still honored today in the word ‘thespian.’ • The word ‘carol’ comes from the Middle English word ‘carolen’ meaning to sing joyously. That word originates with the Greek word ‘choraulein,’ which was a ring dance accompanied by flutes. • ‘Polak’ means Polish man, and ‘polka’ means Polish woman. In addition, the Czeck word ‘pulka’ means ‘halfstep.’ When a new dance originating in Bohemia took the world by storm, it was called the Polka. The polka was very popular and many different items were named after the dance. When a new fabric was invented, the manufacturer decided to name the new design ‘polka dots.’ FAST FACTS ABOUT DANCE • It is illegal to dance to the Star Spangled Banner in several states. • President James Polk banned dancing and drinking in the White House. At his inaugural ball, these illicit activities stopped— until the president and his wife left the ball. • In 1865, somcone sprinkled cayenne pepper on the dance floor in Virginia City, Montana during a dance, causing a sneezing uproar. • Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky was able to cross and uncross his legs ten times in a single leap. • Barnum and Bailey Circus once had a troupe of dancing cows. • Choreographer Paul Taylor once performed a solo dance on stage in which he simply stood motionless for four minutes. The critic for “Dance Observer” magazine reviewed his work by giving him four inches of blank white space. DANCE ANTICS & ANECDOTES • In France in 1960 a new disco opened up called Chez Régine. For weeks everyone who showed up at the door was turned away. A sign out front perpetually announced that the disco was full. Finally the sign was removed, and customers flooded in. It was an instant success. The ‘Disco Full’ sign was a gimmick designed to get people’s curiosity up. • In 1971 jazz composer Roger Kellaway wrote a modern ballet entitled mysteriously “PAMTGG.” Audiences soon realized the acronym stood for the TV commercial jingle, “Pan Am Makes the Going Great.” The entire ballet was based on airport life, including takeoff, landing, and baggage scramble. • Dancer Marie Guimard was famous for her style of dancing which mostly involved graceful movements of the arms as she struck poses. When a piece of falling scenery broke her arm, French opera singer Sohie Arnould remarked, “What a pity it wasn’t her leg; then it wouldn’t have interfered with her dancing!” • British ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn went to see a troupe of black ballet dancers. One of the male performers invited her to join him on stage and she gamely tried to keep up with the rhythm and movement of the vigorous dance as he guided her through the steps. He took her back to her seat saying, “You’re an attractive girl; it’s too bad you can’t dance!” CANADIAN DANCE FACTS • In Canada, the number of people who report earning a living from dance grew from less than 400 in 1971 to over 6,000 in 2001. • Over a million Canadians adults take dance classes or perform in their community. • Over one-quarter of a million Canadian citizens take ballet lessons. • Throughout Canada, dancers earn lower incomes than all other culture workers, and rank among the bottom 5% of all occupations.

Making Your Home Safe for Winter Like it or not, winter is coming. Depending on where you live, you’ve likely already felt the chill winds preceding the even colder weather ahead. Two key elements of winter safety at home are warmth and adequate lighting. Are you ready? Staying Warm: If you live in your own home, when is the last time you had your furnace inspected? If you can’t say it was this season, it’s time to call for an appointment. These system checks should be done once a year and generally include a new furnace filter. Carrying a big blanket from room to room can be a tripping danger. Instead, keep personal-size comforters in various places in your home, especially your favorite chair. Check the bottoms of your slippers to make sure they aren’t worn and slippery. Wear a favorite hat for additional warmth, and consider a padded vest to keep your body’s trunk warm. Adequate Lighting: Fading daylight can creep up on us. One of my friends took a yard light and put it in the kitchen window to recharge in the sun each day. When it becomes dark outside, the little light automatically goes on. Another has put tiny automatic nightlights in a few electric outlets. When the lighting is low, the lights automatically come on. These serve as reminders to turn on more lights in the house. Do you have candles handy for the times when the power goes out? If so, throw them away! It’s too easy for lighted candles to fall over or catch clothing on fire. Instead invest in a few flashlights or “dome” lights that you can leave at various places in your home. Don’t forget a small one for your pocket.
Why Some Women Have Mustaches
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I watch a lot of TV news. Without naming names, there are two very attractive women reporters, dark-haired, who have prominent mustaches. I find this distracting. Is unwanted hair removal so very painful or costly that they would not have it done? We have a niece with the same problem, but I would never mention it to her. What’s going on? -- D.B. ANSWER: Many women have hair growing in places usually reserved only for men -- the mustache area, the chin, the chest, the upper back and the arms. It’s called hirsuitism (HERsue-tizm), and it’s not uncommon. About 5 percent of women in the childbearing years have it, and more women develop it after menopause. It has to do with the balance between male and female hormones. Women make male hormones. Some make slightly more than normal, and other women might have hair follicles that are more sensitive to male hormones than they should be. In either case, hirsuitism is the result. It might be the only sign of male hormone production, or there may be other signs of hormone excess. For many, this is nothing more than a family trait. For others, it can be a sign of trouble in the adrenal gland, the thyroid gland, the pituitary gland or the ovaries. One somewhat-common condition that produces such an imbalance is polycystic ovary syndrome. Not every woman with mustache growth needs an exhaustive investigation, but women should mention it to their doctor to see if the doctor thinks further pursuit is in order. A number of options are open to women who want the hair removed. Shaving and bleaching the hair are two cheap ones. Vaniqa cream -- relatively new -- can be effective. Electrolysis and laser treatments destroy the hair follicles. Electrolysis is somewhat painful, but not so greatly painful that it’s unbearable. Women reporters can afford either procedure. Male hormone excess can be treated with a number of medicines, and that can rid women of unwanted hair. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My next-door neighbor turned yellow ... bright yellow. I had never seen that before. Her husband says she has jaundice. What exactly is that? How is it treated? -- C.M. ANSWER: Jaundice indicates that the skin and the whites of the eyes have turned yellow. It’s not an illness. It comes from the French word for yellow. Jaundice indicates liver trouble. When the liver is functioning normally, it clears the blood of bilirubin, a byproduct of worn-out red blood cells. If the liver’s not up to par, bilirubin levels in the blood rise, and that turns the skin and whites of the eyes yellow. Your neighbor’s doctor has the task of finding the cause of jaundice. Only if the cause is identified can the liver be properly treated. ***

and at www.tidbitsofbaldwincounty.com Are You Spending More Than You Make? If you constantly run out of money and have to scramble before the next paycheck arrives, chances are you’re not using a budget to manage your finances. Here are six easy steps to create a simple budget and put it to work: 1. If you have a computer, go online to wikihow.com and search for creating a budget. You’ll find a number of articles with basic charts and forms you can print out. If you don’t have a computer, pencil and paper will do just fine. 2. Write down your regular expenses. This will include mortgage payment, auto insurance and payment, credit-card payments, tuition -- anything that’s an expense every month. 3. Make a list of expenses that vary from month to month, such as food, utilities (this is where being on a payment plan for utilities can come in handy), shoes and car repair. Estimate the likely cost if necessary. Don’t forget periodic expenses, such as yearly fees for vehicles. Calculate how much you need to set aside each month to meet that expense. 4. Track your spending for a month. You need to know exactly where every dollar has gone. This is not the time to pretend you didn’t really spend all that money on lattes and lunches out. Save every receipt and write down your expenses in a small notebook when you’re out. 5. Consider your long-term financial goals, such as knowing you’ll need another vehicle next year and will need a down payment. Again, calculate how much you’ll need to save each month. While considering this goal of a new vehicle (or another large item), consider whether you’ll be able to afford the payment. 6. At the end of the month, total up your figures and compare your outgo with your income. If you’ve had to put things on credit cards, chances are your outgo exceeded the money that came in. If so, you need to identify areas where you can cut back expenses. Start by looking at what you put on credit cards and anything you labeled as miscellaneous expenses, such as snacks and coffee out, and impulse items. The hard part of budgeting comes the following month when you need to make those cutbacks to your spending. But chances are, if you follow your budget, you won’t run out of money before the next check comes in.

Success on Campus What started as a pilot program at the University of South Florida in 2009 to help veterans make the transition from the military to academics now has expanded to VetSuccess centers on 94 campuses across the country. Part of the VetSuccess program includes having Department of Veterans Affairs vocational rehab counselors and a Vet Center coordinator right on the campus. Those counselors keep in touch with both VA Vet Centers and the other medical facilities where they can refer veterans for medical services and give help in applying for veterans benefits. The schools themselves are in favor of the arrangement and even provide space on the campus. The schools are chosen because of their proximity to other VA facilities, such as a regional offices, vocational rehab centers, employment services offices, medical centers or Vet centers. The fact that the pilot program has grown by to more than 90 schools in four years is a testament to its success. If you’ve considered going back to school but haven’t because of your comfort level in a civilian or academic setting, call the counselors at your school of choice. Go in for a talk and see what types of help they can offer you. They’ll be able to walk you through the benefits you could get as a student. Ask about peer-to-peer counseling, and let them hook you up with veterans who’ve been where you are. You’ll be able to ask your questions and get advice about what steps you need to take to have the best chance of success. For more info on the program, go online to www.vetsuccess. gov or call 1-800-827-1000. To get a head start on what kind of financial help you can get, go online to www.va.gov and search for education benefits.

What is The Behavior Gap? The Behavior Gap is the gap between investor returns and investment returns. This gap is caused by human emotion. The investor’s emotions causes them to earn lower returns. Unfortunately, some of us have done this at some point in time. We buy an investment and within a month it is lower valued than when we bought it. Then, we end up selling it for lower less, out of frustration. This behavior results in buying and selling at the wrong time, not the investments you have chosen. So, before you think about buying and selling your next investment, remember The Behavior Gap.

• Judy was born in 1937 in Shanghai, in a dog kennel. A purebred pointer, she was a brown and white dog of exceptional intelligence and devotion. She was still very young when she was presented to the Royal Navy of Britain in order to serve as a mascot. • Her first assignment was to the ship called the Gnat, where she narrowly avoided death when she fell overboard into the Yangtze River. She and her crew patrolled Chinese waters in spite of Japanese bombardment. The citizens of Hankow were so thankful that they awarded her a silver medal. • When the Gnat was captured by the Japanese in 1939, Judy and her crew were transferred to another gunship called HMS Grasshopper. By now Judy had been trained to point whenever she sensed the approach of a Japanese aircraft. Because of her acute hearing, she often knew of their approach long before humans could hear the engines. • In 1942 the ship was attacked by bombers and forced to beach on a barren island. Two days later, Judy showed up, completely covered in oil. There was no water on the island – until Judy began digging in a very determined manner in one particular spot, unearthing an underground spring. The crew was saved. • The crew of the Grasshopper was eventually captured by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp, with Judy smuggled in under bags of rice. She eventually became the only animal ever officially listed as a POW. During her three-year interment, Judy met Frank Williams, a POW from the British air force. Frank and Judy fell in love, and Frank faithfully shared his meager ration of rice with Judy on a daily basis. Not only did Judy alert prisoners to the approach of Japanese guards, but she also pointed out dangers such as snakes and scorpions. • When she had puppies, one was given to the Commandant of the camp, and another was smuggled into the women’s POW camp. • In 1944, the men were transferred to Singapore aboard a ship. Dogs were not allowed, but Williams taught Judy to lie still inside a rice sack. When he boarded the ship, Judy climbed into a sack and Williams slung it over his shoulder. For three hours the men were forced to stand on deck in searing heat as they were inspected, and for the entire time Judy remained silent in the bag on his back. • The ship was torpedoed a few days later. In desperation, Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole, even though there was a 15 feet (4.6 m) drop to the water. He escaped, not knowing if Judy had survived. When Williams was sent to a new POW camp in Sumatra, he began to hear stories of a dog who helped save men from drowning by allowing them to hold onto her collar while she swam towards floating debris. Then one day, Williams was knocked flat when Judy arrived at the camp and bowled him over in her excitement to see him again. • When the guards sentenced her to death, Williams sent her into the jungle to survive on her own. She ate rats and snakes, and a run-in with an alligator left her permanently scarred. • When the war ended, Judy was smuggled aboard a troop ship headed for Liverpool, where the cook kept her well fed. Following a six month quarantine, she was presented with a Dickin Award, which honors animals in war. Simultaneously, Frank Williams was awarded the White Cross for his devotion to Judy. Interviewed by the BBC in 1946, Judy’s barks were broadcast to the entire nation. Frank Williams and Judy then spent the next year visiting friends and relatives of POWs who had not survived the war. • Frank Williams cared for Judy until her death due to a tumor in 1950 at the age of 13.

Remembering Author: Andrea Poppleton
Read: Psalm 143 I remember the days of old. (v. 5) If you’re trying to live creatively, you will sometimes get stuck. Your discipline will wane. Your momentum will halt. Feelings of inadequacy, fear, or procrastination will assail you, and you will be tempted to give up. Many characters in the Bible found themselves in that same position. David, the creative king, is one such character. Though David was “a man after [God’s] heart” (Acts 13:22), there were times when David felt far from God and from knowing how to proceed with his life. In Psalm 143 David put words to one of those moments; he described his feelings with phrases like “my spirit grows faint” and “my heart within me is dismayed” (v. 4 NIV). David was stuck. But David knew a practice that could get him unstuck: remembering. In the midst of his despair David wrote, “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands” (v. 5). When David remembered the past, he could imagine a new future. Given what he had previously experienced as he co-created with God, David knew that those same experiences were possible again. When you feel stuck, remembering can be your way out. You can recall past successes, past moments of inspiration, and past struggles that you overcame. When you remember that God worked with you in the past, you may find the motivation to continue creating with him into the future.
Prayer:
When I feel stuck, call to mind the work we have already accomplished together. Amen.
2 Open the gates that the righteous nation may enter, the nation that keeps faith. 3 You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal.
– Isaiah 26:2-4

A Note From the Editor We’ve owned our used BMW for almost a year now and, up to this point, have been very pleased with the mechanical condition of the car. After purchasing the SUV my skeptical parents were the first to scowl and say, “It’s a foreign car and your repairs will be pricey!” There were other naysayers along the way warning us of costly parts, tires, sunroof problems and trips to the mechanic. We do, however, have a friend that’s loyal to the carmaker and swore we would get 500,000 miles, or more, from the car. A few months into foreign car ownership my dashboard began to display a “Check Rear Lights” message. Every week or so I would make our son hop out of the car in the driveway and check all of the rear lights, just to verify that the message was false. In the dead heat of summer the A/C fan controller went out and I anxiously sat in the mechanic’s lobby (much like the maternity waiting room) expecting a $900.00 repair. Instead, he emerged to tell me that my repair would cost $180.00, including parts and labor. I breathed a huge sigh of relief that day. In early September, immediately following an oil change, the car began leaking oil profusely and proudly displayed “Check Oil Level” on the dash. Due to the obvious evidence I found on the cement, this message seemed genuine and I quickly returned to the mechanic - expecting the inevitable $800.00 repair quote again. Fortunately, it was a minor fix and they made the repair quickly and free of charge. This past week I experienced a brand new warning message - “Check Coolant Level”. My gauge didn’t indicate my car was running hot but I wasn’t willing to take the chance that my dash was delivering a phony message. So, you guessed it, I was back at the mechanic holding my breath, squinting my eyes and mentally preparing for the bad news. They filled the tank with a half gallon of coolant and I was on my way. Two days later, yep, “Coolant” message again and I was back at the shop bracing myself for the quote of all quotes. The thorough check revealed that I simply needed a new coolant cap, to the tune of about 30 bucks, and all was well with the world. Yes, I have made at least ten visits to my favorite mechanics in Foley over the past year, but each visit proved to be non-devastating. I am grateful my used car has passed the one-year test and I’m also thankful that the naysayers prepared me for the worst. It’s made my 12 months worth of repairs seem very reasonable. Be blessed, Audrey
