by Rick Dandes Christmas means laughing and spending time with family and friends, but most importantly, it honors the birth of Jesus. Join Tidbits on a journey around the world as we explore how various cultures celebrate this holiday. • Firsts and lasts: In 1836, Alabama was the first state in the United States to declare Christmas a legal holiday. U.S. President Franklin Pierce, in 1856, decorated the first White House Christmas tree. And in 1907, Oklahoma was the last state to declare Christmas a legal holiday. • The idea for using electric Christmas lights came from an American named Ralph E. Morris in 1895. The new lights proved safer than the more traditional candles. • The first Christmas card was created in England in 1843. Hallmark introduced its first Christmas cards in 1915, five years after the founding of the company. An average household in America will mail out 28 Christmas cards each year and see 28 cards return in their place. • Approximately 1.8 billion Christmas cards are sent annually in the United States. • Pudding is important in the Christmas traditions of Great Britain. While making the pudding, the British have a traditional practice of making a wish while mixing the ingredients in a clockwise direction. • In Italy, a dinner of several kinds of seafood, sometimes called the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” is popular for the Christmas Turn to page 2 for more!

Tidbits of Baldwin County, December 18 & 25 of 2013, For Your Sales & Marketing Needs Call 251-262-6020 Should In-Laws Pets Get Holiday Gifts?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m going to be a guest at my in-laws’ house for Christmas. They have two small dogs. Is it appropriate for me to buy gifts for the dogs as well as for them? -- Suzanne C., Sarasota, Fla. DEAR SUZANNE: Most owners these days see their pets as a part of the family, so it’s not unusual to see a gift or three for their dog, cat, bird and so on. However, trying to decide whether to purchase a gift for someone else’s pet, and what kind of gift to get, can be tricky. It helps if you know your in-laws well and are familiar with their pets. Start by asking your husband if it’s appropriate to give a gift to the dogs, and if he knows of anything
CHARITY
they can’t have. He may have some idea, but don’t be disappointed if he really doesn’t know. If you’re on good terms with other members of his family, ask them. And it’s probably all right to ask his parents if it’s OK to get something for the dogs. You’ll have to do some feeling out in any case. You may get a firm “no” from your in-laws, but don’t be hurt; they usually have their reasons. But if the answer is noncommittal, or hopefully, gracious, be sure to ask if there is any toy or other item that the in-laws would prefer for the dogs. If and when you purchase gifts for the dogs, avoid big-ticket items. A chew toy (appropriately sized for the dogs) or a helpful accessory, like a clip-on doggie bag dispenser for the leash, is a thoughtful gesture.
Eve meal. • A Christmas tradition in Estonia takes place on Christmas Eve, when the whole family goes to the sauna together. • He is known throughout the world by various names: Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Saint Nicholas, Sinterklaas, St. Nick and Pere Noel. On Christmas Eve, children all over the world lie in their beds while “visions of sugarplums dance in their heads.” When they awake, they will excitedly check to see if Santa Claus visited and left them gifts. • On the west coast of Africa, in Liberia, most homes have an oil palm for a Christmas tree, which is decorated with bells. On Christmas morning, presents such as cotton cloth, soap, sweets, pencils and books are exchanged. Also on Christmas morning, a church service is held in which the Christmas scene is enacted and hymns and carols are sung. • In Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela, it is customary for the streets to be blocked off around Christmas so that people can roller-skate to church. • In Bangladesh at Christmas time, Christian men in each village plant full-sized banana trees along the paths to churches. They plant them in two rows, and then bend them over to form an arch. They make oil lanterns out of bamboo poles and tie them on the arches, lighting the way to church. • In Ethiopia, Christmas is called Ganna and is observed on January 7. People gather in both ancient churches carved from solid volcanic rock and more modern churches that contain three concentric circles. Exchanging presents is a small part of their Christmas celebration. Children usually only receive necessary items like clothing. • In the Netherlands, the Dutch eagerly await December 6, for it is on this day that they celebrate St. Nicholas Day, the coming of Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas sails from Spain every winter, and Dutch children fill their shoes with hay and sugar for his horse on St. Nicholas eve and awake to find them filled with gifts such as nuts and candy. On St. Nicholas Day, they celebrate with family get-togethers and feasting, after which everyone settles down to prepare for Christmas Day on December 25. • Christians of most denominations in Hong Kong celebrate Christmas with hundreds of church services spoken in Chinese. There are also services held in English for the Europeans who live there. They also send exquisitely decorated Christmas cards, and these cards often show the Holy Family in a Chinese setting. Santa Claus is known as Sing Daan Lou Yan (Christmas Old Man) in Cantonese or Sheng Dan Lo Ren in Mandarin. • There is a sweet Christmas tradition in Scandinavia. A little gnome called Julenisse puts the presents under the Christmas tree at night. The children leave a bowl of porridge out for him. • It is from Scandinavia that most of our Yule log traditions derive. The dark cold winters inspired the development of traditions concerned with warmth and light. Yuletide, meaning “the turning of the sun” or the winter solstice, has traditionally been a time of extreme importance in Scandinavia. • For a long time, it was considered dangerous to sleep alone on Christmas Eve. The extended family, master and servant alike, would sleep together on a freshly spread bed of straw. • The Yule log was originally an entire tree, carefully chosen and brought into the house with great ceremony. The butt end would be placed into the hearth while the rest of the tree stuck out into the room. The tree would be fed into the fire and the entire process was carefully timed to last the entire Yule season. • The Chlausjagen Festival or Feast of St. Nicholas is celebrated in Switzerland at dusk on December 6. The week before Christmas, children dress up and visit homes with gifts. Ringing church bells to call people to midnight mass has become a tradition, and each village competes with the next for the “best” bell ringing. After the service, families gather to share homemade doughnuts called ringli and hot chocolate. • A Maltese Christmas traditionally is centered on the Christ’s crib or presepju. The child’s version of the church crib is called grolta. The crib figures are called pasturi and represent Jesus, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, angels, villagers and animals such as cows and sheep. • Wreaths have a long history that can be traced back to the ancient Druids. They believed that holly, an evergreen with bright red berries, had magical properties. Wreaths were first created when holly and other evergreens were arranged in a circular shape.

Eat Nuts, Live Longer For years, my doctor has been trying to steer me away from peanut butter and toward other nut butters, like almond and cashew, saying they were more nutritious. Recently, I discovered that a major manufacturer has come out with a line of cashew and almond butters that don’t have all that oil floating on top. I grabbed one of each and compared them to my usual brand of peanut butter Ð and found no appreciable difference between the types! Calories, proteins and total carbohydrates all were very similar. And now there’s even more reason to stick with what I like, which is peanut butter: A 30-year Harvard study of nearly 120,000 professionals that looked at consumption of nuts in the diet. Here’s what it learned: “Increased nut consumption is associated with a reduced risk of major chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.” The more times per week the participants had nuts, the lower their mortality rate. “Those who consumed nuts seven or more times per week had a 20 percent lower death rate.” It was the same for peanuts and tree nuts, like pistachio, walnut, almond, hazelnut and cashew. And that isn’t all. The findings jibed with other studies done in the U.S., U.K. and the Netherlands. Granted, the researchers couldn’t explain exactly why this is so. Do people who eat nuts exercise more? Do they follow a healthier diet? (It was found that nut consumption caused less weight gain and was associated with smaller waists and less risk of obesity.) Therefore they don’t specifically say “eat nuts, live longer.” But there is a correlation, no matter how it works. Try putting crushed nuts on your salads, yogurt and cereal, or spreading nut butters on crackers or toast. Or just eat them by the handful.
In the Dark About Herpes DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have been with my husband for 33 years, and for the past six I have been suspicious of him being unfaithful. I went to the doctor and tested negative for HIV, but I was positive for herpes 1 and 2. My husband claims I could have had this since before we met and says that he’s completely innocent. Do you think I could have had this for 30 years and not known it? It seems rather unrealistic to me. -- D.F. ANSWER: Herpes viruses are a group of common viruses that share several traits, one of which is that they all stay dormant in the body and may cause recurrences in times of stress. Herpes simplex 1 causes an outbreak of cold sores: These often come out when people are ill or stressed. Herpes simplex 2 usually causes genital lesions. About 20 percent of adults in the U.S. are positive for HSV-2; many or even most of them don’t know they have it. Once you acquire HSV-2, it stays in your body forever, and may (or may not) cause recurrent disease, which most commonly looks like a clear, fluid-filled blister. These are very infectious, but it is possible to transmit the virus even when there are no symptoms. It is possible that you acquired the condition 30 or more years ago. The test isn’t able to tell how long you’ve had it. The booklet on herpes and genital warts explains these two common infections in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My husband tells me I have bad breath. I have seen my dentist and done all the things I was told to do, but there hasn’t been any improvement. I have tried many mouthwashes, without success. What more can I do? -- W.B. ANSWER: You were right in starting out with your dentist. When no oral conditions are found that produce bad breath, then the most likely cause is mouth bacteria that produce odoriferous, sulfur compounds. Let me repeat what your dentists told you for the sake of others. Brush after every meal, and brush your tongue as far back as you can. You might want to get a tongue scraper for the backmost part of the tongue. That’s where the sulfur-producing bacteria live. Keep your mouth moist by drinking water or chewing sugar-free gum. Products containing zinc have been sold since the 1970s and have gotten mixed reviews for their effect on halitosis. Listerine with zinc is one product. Another is SmartMouth. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had a breast lump removed two years ago. After the removal, I had radiation. Everything has been going fine, except for a breast infection I got last month. Were the treatments responsible? -- A.D. ANSWER: Surgery and radiation could have caused changes in the breast that made it more susceptible to an infection. But neither was the actual cause of it.

and at www.tidbitsofbaldwincounty.com Safeguarding Your Documents
What would happen to your family’s photo memories if your home was damaged by tornado, hurricane, fire or flood? Answer: They could be gone forever, unless you’ve taken steps to safeguard the information. Photos aren’t the only thing that could be damaged. Marriage certificate, college diploma, mortgage loan documents and passports are among the household items most likely left in their paper form, for two reasons: We either want to see them frequently, or we want them nearby in case we need them. If you have most of your important documents on paper, you’re not alone. In a recent survey, 87 percent of participants say their documents are on paper. Damage or destruction isn’t the only thing that can happen to paper documents; they can also just disappear in the stacks of memorabilia of the average home, making them hard to find. Our fascination with paper items comes from a desire to hold on to the past -- in its original form. While 50 percent of us see the benefits of converting our documents to digital forms, we don’t believe that paper will completely disappear from our lives. It takes a bit of work, but there are ways to ensure that favorite keepsakes and necessary documents don’t vanish: --Make color copies of documents and keep the original in a bank box. With tax records, store the originals in the bank box. (Sign up a trusted friend or family member who will keep the second key to the box.) Include a list of credit-card numbers and 800-numbers in case you have a loss. Don’t put the original of your will in a bank box, as the account may be frozen at your death. --Scan your documents onto CD and store that in a bank box. --Fireproof safe -- Look for one with at least an hour rating. Ideally it can be bolted to the floor in a closet. --Cloud storage -- You scan and upload your documents to the “ether,” somewhere out there on the Internet across multiple servers and locations. Consider whether you really want your Social Security number and other important information “out there.” Better bet: Use cloud storage for photos only. While you’re sorting documents, consider whether it’s time to invest in a shredder (confetti, not strip type) and get rid of old documents such as mortgage papers to homes you no longer own and very old tax documents.

On Dec. 7, Operation Gratitude reached a significant milestone: It sent the one-millionth care package to service members around the globe. That meant sending more than 100,000 individually addressed care packages each year, accomplished with the aid of hundreds of volunteers in Van Nuys, Calif. The lucky recipient of the one-millionth package didn’t just get a box full of high-value gifts, entertainment items and hand-written letters of appreciation -- the service member will come home to a new Ford F-150 pickup truck. During the past 10 years, OpGrat has grown as more and more volunteers have stepped forward to help, and the reach of the packages has expanded. It now includes veterans, first responders and Wounded Warriors, as well as active-duty personnel in hostile areas. How can you help? It costs $15 to mail each package. Consider making a $15 tax-deductible donation four times a year to OpGrat, to coincide with their quarterly mailings. You can donate online at its website -- www.OperationGratitude.com -- or you can send a check to: Operation Gratitude 16444 Refugio Road Encino, CA 91436 You also can keep an eye on its activities www.twitter.com/OpGratitude; and www.facebook.com/OperationGratitude. If you’re crafty, check the website for instructions on how to make handmade scarves, paracord bracelets (sent to first responders) and bandana cool-ties for the packages. If you’re part of a group, look for fundraising ideas or assemble Care Kits to go in the individual packages. Write letters of appreciation to go in each package. Check the website for the list of most-needed items, as these change from time to time. Contact OpGrat at 262-674-7281 for shipping instructions, as the address above isn’t for shipments. It took from 2003 until now to ship 1 million packages. Let’s help OpGrat cut that time in half for the next million.

I stopped in at The Bake Shoppe Cafe and Grill in Robertsdale to grab a sweet treat for my kids however, I found much more than a bake shop. Tomato basil soup was posted on the chef’s board as the soup of the day so I ordered a bowl and had a look at the menu. I was surprised at the wide variety of menu options such as sandwiches, fish tacos, wraps, quesadillas, salads and eight specialty burgers.

I was a bit hypnotized by the burger menu and found myself living vicariously through another lady who came in and ordered the tuna burger. The waitress explained that fresh tuna was pattied up, much like a crab cake, and served burger style with Chef Juan’s homemade mayo. When the burger arrived, it looked so delicious, I had to ask the lady if she approved and she replied, “It’s very good.” With another glance at the menu I realized that almost every entree featured a homemade sauce or condiment made by Chef Juan. I finished off my hot, flavorful bowl of soup and mapped out my choice for my next visit to Chef Juan’s. The Bake Shoppe offers baked goods and specialty cakes made fresh to order. With at least 24 hours notice you can have a beautiful and delicious cake for your special occasion. Chef Juan boasts a yummy cake fondant that is beyond compare. Catering is also available for groups of 10 or more. Cafe specials change daily and, for your convenience, those specials are posted in Facebook every weekday. The Bake Shoppe Cafe & Grill is located at 22245 Hwy. 59 in Robertsdale and their hours of operation are Monday – Friday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. For a complete menu you can find them on the web at www.thebakeshoppecafe.com and for bakery orders and catering, please call 251-947-4701.

Ironically, most people in that area of California call the utility company PG&E. 2. Kool & the Gang. The Parents Music Resource Center was born. There were 15 songs on its original list.

Medearis Hearty Soup Keeps Winter Chill at Bay For many people, the cold weather is a reason not to exercise outside or not to exercise at all. However, it is possible to get a great workout outdoors this winter, as long as you exercise caution and dress properly. Exercising in cold weather can put extra stress on the body. It is important to consult your physician if you have a medical condition that puts you at risk before starting a new outdoor regimen. The two conditions you have to worry about are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is the freezing body tissue. It occurs most often on fingers, toes, ears and face. Symptoms of frostbite include pain, numbness, tingling and burning of the affected site. Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature drops to below 95 degrees F. Symptoms include chills, fatigue, drowsiness, slurred speech, intense shivering and loss of coordination. The right clothes are your first line of defense. Dress in layers. The first layer should be a thin synthetic fabric such as polypropylene, which helps draw sweat away from the body. The next layer should be fleece or wool to help insulate the body. The top layer should be waterproof to help keep heat from escaping and keep moisture and wind out. It’s also important to protect areas of the body prone to frostbite. A thin pair of gloves under a heavier pair will protect hands. Thermal socks will help protect the feet. It may be necessary to purchase shoes a half size larger to allow for the thickness of the socks. Don’t forget a hat or headband to protect your ears. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is not just a risk in the summer. When sweating and increased breathing occur, in any type of weather, dehydration is a possibility. It is particularly important to warm up properly for cold weather workouts. The body tends to stiffen more easily in cold weather. Do a short warm-up activity to help prevent injury. Remember that shoveling snow can be a good workout, but also can take a toll on people who are not used to heavy lifting. Take the same precautions you would for any other hard outdoor workout, because that is exactly what it is! After your winter workout, you can warm up with a hearty bowl
of Kale and Potato Chowder. With potatoes replacing the cream traditionally used in chowder recipes, this is a fast, economical and healthy soup that will keep the chill away until spring. KALE AND POTATO CHOWDER 4 cups chopped fresh kale, stems removed 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning or Italian seasoning 4 cloves garlic, diced 1 (14-ounce) can diced tomatoes -- no salt added, with liquid 4 large baking potatoes, diced with skin 3 cups water 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 large carrot, sliced into thin rounds 1 (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1. In a large pot, heat the oil. Add onions, salt, pepper and poultry or Italian seasoning; cook until onions are tender, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and the tomatoes, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the potatoes, water and broth to the soup pot. Bring the ingredients to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are almost done, about 10 minutes. 2. Remove 2 cups of the potatoes along with some of the liquid. Place the potatoes and liquid into a blender. Carefully loosen the top of the blender to allow air to circulate, and cover the top with a dish towel to prevent the hot liquid from exploding out. Start blending on the lowest setting, and gradually increase to medium and then high. Blend until the potatoes are smooth. 3. Add the potato mixture, kale, carrots and kidney beans to soup pot; stir to combine. Continue cooking for 10 to 15 minutes until kale and carrots are tender. Taste and add more seasoning as needed. Serve in soup bowl along with side salad of fruit or leafy greens, and whole-grain crackers or bread. Makes 6 (1-1/4 cup) servings.
Easy Christmas Stollen Ricotta cheese adds richness and moisture to this sweet bread. 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 8 tablespoons butter or margarine (1 stick) 1 cup ricotta cheese 1/2 cup candied lemon peel or coarsely chopped red candied cherries 1/2 cup dark seedless raisins 1/3 cup slivered blanched almonds, toasted 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 large egg yolk 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease a large cookie sheet. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. With pastry blender or two knives used scissor-fashion, cut in 6 tablespoons butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. With spoon, stir in ricotta until mixture is moistened. Stir in candied lemon peel, raisins, almonds, vanilla, grated lemon peel, egg and egg yolk until well-mixed. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; gently knead dough 2 or 3 times to mix. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 10-inch-by-8-inch oval. Fold oval lengthwise almost in half, so that edges do not quite meet. 3. Place stollen on prepared cookie sheet. Bake until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 1 hour. Transfer to wire rack. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and brush over warm stollen. Cool completely. Makes 12 servings. ¥ Each serving: About 298 calories, 14g total fat (7g saturated), 67mg cholesterol, 211mg sodium, 38g carbs, 7g protein.

“Walk With God” For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 Have you ever been home alone and you didn’t feel quite right? Have you ever felt the Word of God begin to gnaw at you? If you have ever felt the Lord tug at you you’ll realize that God has His way of doing things. Of course we also have our way of doing things. The Bible says that Enoch and Noah walked with God, and Abram who was 99 years old was told by God to, “Walk before Me blameless.” In today’s society when it comes to God, how do we walk? Do we walk to catch up or maybe try to just keep up? Maybe for some there even may be a temptation to give up. As true believers we all desire to walk in a way that keeps stride with our Lord Jesus. Amos 3:3 tells us that two cannot walk together unless they agree. We are to live our lives in agreement with the Bible and with the Lord. We all struggle with this sometimes and Romans 8:1 tells us that there is now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Yes, this makes us feel so much better and as Tony the Tiger would say, “I feel Grrreeeaaat!” Blessings, Arnie Hudgins Liberty Church
Liberty Church meets on Sundays at 9:00am and 10:45am 110 Riviera Blvd. Foley, AL. (Behind Applebee’s)
9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
