• David Starsky and Kenneth Hutchinson were fictional Bay City, California, cops who raced through the streets in Starsky’s red Gran Torino for 92 episodes on ABC television. Actors Michael Glaser and David Soul portrayed the police pair under the radio call sign “Zebra three” from April of 1975 until May of 1979. • In 1939, Batman was introduced in “The Case of the Chemical Syndicate” in Detective Comics as a crimefighter who masqueraded as playboy Bruce Wayne. The faithful sidekick Robin (aka Dick Grayson) joined the Caped Crusader in 1940, and together, the Dynamic Duo waged war against Gotham city crime. The pair moved to television in 1966 for 120 episodes of a live-action series. On the big screen, Batman has been portrayed by box office stars Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale.

FAMOUS DUOS (continued): • Although most famous for their “Who’s on First?” baseball sketch, the comedy team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello appeared in 38 films together. They got their start in burlesque in 1935, moving on to radio, film and television. They were box office stars by 1941 and began their own TV series in 1952. However, fame didn’t come without its difficulties. Both comics were habitual gamblers, and Abbott managed the pain from his epilepsy with alcohol. Costello battled regular bouts with rheumatic fever, which forced him to take a year off from work. On the day he returned to work, his infant son drowned in the family swimming pool. Both men were charged for back taxes by the IRS in 1956, and both were forced to sell their homes and film rights to cover the debt.
• Bonnie Parker was just 19 years old and already married to an imprisoned murderer when she met 21-year-old Clyde Barrow in Texas. During the Great Depression, the outlaw couple reportedly was responsible for at least 12 bank robberies, countless smaller burglaries and 13 murders, including those of nine police officers. On the day their lives of crime came to an end in 1934, Bonnie and Clyde were driving a gray V-8 Ford, which was ambushed by the law in Louisiana. Officers fired a total of 167 bullets, killing the pair and halting a three-year spree. Over the next several years, carnival and fair goers viewed the Ford for 25 cents. The car was later purchased by Nevada’s Primm Valley Resort and Casino for $250,000 and can now be seen at the facility just outside Las Vegas. • Meriwether Lewis was 29 years old and cocommander William Clark was 33 when they were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 to explore the Louisiana Purchase all the way to the Pacific coast. Lewis and Clark were both Virginia-born veterans of Ohio Valley Indian wars. Their expedition included more than 40 other men and their Shoshone guide Sacagawea as they wound their way up the Missouri River. Over a period of two years and four months, the group traveled over 8,000 miles (12,875 km), using a 55-foot-long (17-m) keelboat and two smaller boats, all the while making maps and studying the rocks, soil, plants and wildlife they encountered. After the expedition, Jefferson appointed Lewis Governor of the Louisiana Territory. At age 35, on a journey to deliver his journals to a Washington, D.C., publisher, Lewis died from multiple gunshot wounds, generally accepted as a suicide, although some believe he was the victim of an assassin. Clark served as Governor of the Missouri Territory and finally as Superintendent of Indian Continued on page 5

Is Your Cat Bored? We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity. If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

Affairs. • Barbie and Ken were the creations of Ruth Handler, wife of the Mattel toy company co-founder. Ruth named the couple after her own children, introducing Barbie in 1959 and Ken in 1961. Barbie (full name Barbie Roberts) has had more than 125 careers, including architect, astronaut, doctor and racecar driver. Ken Carson, who has had at least 40 occupations, first appeared with a molded plastic haircut with felt hair. In 2004, Mattel announced a breakup of our favorite couple, implying Ken’s reluctance to get married, but rekindled the romance in 2006 in conjunction with a makeover for Ken. Barbara Handler Segal is now a 70-year-old Los Angeles mother of two. Her brother Ken passed away at age 50 in 1994 of a brain tumor. • Most baby boomers will recall learning from the popular “Dick and Jane” readers during their primary school years — about 60 million children in all used the books. The brother and sister pair first appeared in 1930, and by the 1950s, about 80 percent of first-graders were reading the series. Written by William Gray and Zerna Sharp, the books also featured sister Sally, Spot the dog and Puff the cat. If you happen to have a first edition of one of the books, it’s worth as much as $200. • Daryl Hall and John Oates met in 1967 while attending Philadelphia’s Temple University. It wasn’t until seven years later that they achieved their first hit “She’s Gone.” Their first of six Billboard No. 1 songs came along in 1977, “Rich Girl,” followed up with “Kiss on My List.” The pair has racked up 34 singles on the Hot 100 charts and seven platinum albums, with sales of more than 60 million records.

• The German Grimm Brothers introduced Hansel and Gretel in an 1812 publication. The brother and sister were the children of a poor woodcutter who surrendered to his second wife’s plot to abandon the young pair in the woods. Wandering in the forest, the children happened upon a cottage made of gingerbread cakes, home to a cannibalistic witch. • Mickey and Minnie Mouse became an item in 1929 in the cartoon “Plane Crazy,” just four months after Mickey’s debut in “Steamboat Willie.” They went on to appear in 73 cartoons together. Their friend Donald Duck was single from the time of his 1934 premiere in “The Wise Little Hen” until Daisy Duck’s appearance in 1940’s “Mr. Duck Steps Out.” The sailor-suited Donald is the uncle of triplets Huey, Dewey and Louie, while Daisy is the aunt of their counterparts April, May and June Duck.

Picture jaspers exhibit combinations of patterns (such as banding from flow or depositional patterns caused by water or wind), and color variations the look like scenes or images on a cut section. There is also orbicular (circular) jasper, and ribbon jasper. See the variety in the stones shown above. Jasper is found in many countries and used often as architectural adornments on buildings. Perhaps that is because the new Jerusalem descending from heaven is described as follows: "It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal." Revelation 21:11. At least three states have cities named after this stone: Alabama, Indiiana, and Texas.

Are you Skinny-Fat?
528
Facts on Fat vs. Lean Muscle and Body Fat % There are many factors to understand when it comes to body fat and lean muscle mass. This column will touch on some helpful, basic facts and tips to help you gain a better understanding of the two and how to focus on areas where you might need improvement Ever heard the term “skinny-fat?” This term would apply to individuals who may not weigh a whole lot according to the scale, but their body fat percentage would be higher than normal. Most likely, these are individuals who have done little, if any, resistance or weight training, and have a very low percent of lean mass on their body. Why is this a big deal? Well we all know having a high body fat percentage can lead to long term health problems, including but not limited to: diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease. It’s also true if you live life with a higher than normal body fat percentage (and a low amount of lean muscle mass), your metabolism will become slower and slower - eventually resulting in more and more weight gain as you get older. It’s important for us to have our body fat composition measured on a regular basis – at least once every year. Utilizing those numbers, rather than the numbers on the scale, will help you better achieve your personal health and wellness goals. When you obtained these numbers, for example, its time to create and execute a manageable plan! In order to drop body fat, you will need to: (1.) eat healthy, (2.) engage in some type of fat burning exercise, and (3.) add to your lean muscle mass by lifting weights or doing some form of resistance training! Get with a trained professional who can help you assess your situation, and make recommendations for reasonable and attainable goals based on your lifestyle and age. Sometimes we all need is a little help or motivation. Someone providing a little push, help, guidance and/or some accountability. Be sure to check out next weeks’ column regarding misconceptions of women and weight training! Until next time. Yours in Health, Fitness & Happiness,

Why is Brushing With Toothpaste Important? Brushing with toothpaste is important for several reasons. First and foremost, a toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, a sticky, harmful film of bacteria that grows on your teeth that causes cavities, gum disease and eventual tooth loss if not controlled. Second, toothpaste contains fluoride, which makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in Dr Burgner repairing early decay before the damage can even be seen. Third, special ingredients in toothpaste help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time. Fourth, toothpastes help freshen breath and leave your mouth with a clean feeling. Is brushing with toothpaste enough to fight cavities and gum disease? No. Although brushing thoroughly after each meal helps, flossing your teeth every day to remove plaque and food particles between teeth and at the gumline is just as important. Studies show that plaque will regrow on teeth that are completely clean within three to four hours of brushing. Please see our ad on page 7 of Tidbits

While the election season heats up, you will hear more and more promises, claims and counterclaims from the candidates. As a citizen, you may or may not enjoy this “political theater,” but as an Cindy Rose investor, you might be concerned over all the talk about taxes, Social Security, Medicare and other financial topics. Will you need to adjust your savings and investment strategies? If so, how? Before you think about adjusting your investment strategy in anticipation of any actions coming from Washington, keep a couple of facts in mind. First, few campaign promises become reality. And second, due to our system of government, radical shifts in direction are difficult to implement — which is why so few of them occur. Still, we may see some smaller-scale — yet not insignificant — changes in the near future. In light of this possibility, what investment decisions should you make? Here are a few suggestions: Consider owning investments that are taxed in different ways. No one can predict what will happen with income tax rates or the tax rates that are applied to capital gains and dividends. Consequently, it may be a good idea to seek “tax diversification” by owning investments that are taxed in different ways. For example, when you sell appreciated stocks, you pay capital gains taxes, whereas interest payments from bonds will be taxed at your individual tax rate. And it’s always a good idea to take advantage of tax-advantaged vehicles, such as an IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Stick with quality. It’s a good idea, when owning stocks, to invest in quality companies with diversified businesses. These companies are usually less dependent on a particular government program, and they typically have a global reach, so they may be better able to handle any changes implemented in Washington. Stay focused on your long-term goals. Politicians come and go, and our political parties seem to take turns holding the reins of power. Yet your long-term goals — such as college for your children, a comfortable retirement and the ability to leave a legacy to your family — don’t really change. By realizing that you are largely responsible for achieving your goals, and by following an investment strategy that’s suitable for your individual risk tolerance and time horizon, you can make gradual, but still meaningful, progress toward those goals — no matter what’s happening in Washington. Review your strategy regularly. With the possible approach of changes in tax policies and in government programs that can affect your retirement security, you’ll want to review your investment strategy regularly to make sure it’s still on track toward helping you meet your objectives. As part of this review, you may want to seek out more “tax-smart” investment opportunities, while always looking for ways to supply the asset growth you’ll need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Aside from voting for the candidates who best represent your interests, you may not have much influence over what goes on in Washington. But by “electing” the right moves to help meet your goals, you can have plenty of control over your investment strategy.

Tidbits of Douglas County BULLY PROOF YOUR CHILD About Judo Judo was developed in Japan by Dr Jigoro Kano towards the end of the 19th century and has evolved from being a martial art into one of the world’s most popular sports. Since its inclusion in the 1964 Olympic Games Judo has progressed rapidly and is without doubt the world’s most popular combat sport. Judo is however much more than a sport, it is also seen to be effective as an educational system in both physical and moral spheres.
2012-the Year of Fulfillment I believe with all my heart, that 2012 is going to be a year like no other year that we have experienced. I believe this is the year where you and I are going to see our highest expectations fulfilled, our desires, our dreams come to pass. In fact, I believe the number 12 to be a very significant number in many areas. There were the 12 tribes of Israel, Jesus chose 12 disciples, New Jerusalem will have 12 foundations, with 12 angels at those gates. Jesus was 12 years old when he was found in the temple, explaining that he must be about his father’s business. Jairus’ daughter was raised from the dead at the age of 12. Our modern calendar has 12 months in it. The number 12 in the Bible represents fulfillment or the completion of something desire or promised. I know in my heart, that every one of you reading this today have dreams and visions that God has put inside of you. You have a calling, you have a destiny that only you can fulfill. And the world needs you, it needs your dreams and visions to come to pass, that’s why God gave them to you in the first place. So that you could be a blessing to the world. And folks that is the heart of this gospel message that we preach. Jesus has come, Jesus has bought us back, Jesus has paid the price, and now ‘THE BLESSING’ of Abraham is ours. Jo and I want you to go into 2012 with great expectancy. Begin to apply your faith and allow your faith to grow for what God has told you! Listen to this scripture in Psalms… Psalm 62:5 (KJV) My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. What is he saying here? He is saying the dream he has is from God and he will not quit, he will not stop believing. Let me ask you today, what dream has God put in your heart? Whatever it is, do not let go of it, do not give up, do not give in, do not retreat, do not surrender! If God put it inside of you, then He wants it to come to pass, even more than you do! When you know that you know the He is the one who caused this expectation to be birthed in you, then in your mind there is no turning back. No matter what anyone else thinks, or says or does, you hold on fast to what you believe. 2012 will be a year for your highest expectations, your biggest dreams, your largest goals to be fulfilled. Apply your faith, allow your expectations to become so intense, that what you see on the inside, beings to manifest on the outside! God needs you blessed, He wants you blessed, not so you can just use it on yourself, but so you can be a blessing to your family, your church, your community, and the world!

Bullying It is clear to see that Judo and antibullying policies go hand in hand. Judo has been seen to actively reduce bullying. Bullies can only get away with their reigns of terror in relatively uncontrolled environments and the disciplined dojo (training hall) removes them from their position of power. At the same time they themselves learn discipline and self control, quite often whilst losing to players who were previously victims of their bullying. This gives them a new perspective and a newfound respect for such players. Mutual Respect The moral benefits of Judo are a direct result of the transition from martial art to what Kano termed “Do” or “way of life”. Kano added a strict code of ethics and a humanitarian philosophy to his system. His Judo instructors and students were expected to be outstanding examples of good character and honest conduct. Combat outside of the training hall or behavior that brought shame to the school would lead to suspension or even expulsion. Kano’s ultimate concern for the well being of both the individual and the community is reflected in his teaching methods and one of Judo’s guiding principles is “mutual benefit and prosperity”. Kano believed that the diligent practice of Judo should lead to the realization that one could not progress at the expense of others; only mutual prosperity offered the key to any real progress in human life. Self-Esteem Judo is an ideal sport for all ages, males or females and attracts very many disability groups. Confidence and self-esteem are enhanced as a player progresses through the ranks and the very nature of the grading system ensures that the next goal is always realistic and achievable with effort. The grading system also ensures that regardless of their skill level all Judo players can actively compete with players of similar ability and hence they have a reasonable chance of emerging victorious. Special Needs The ethos of Judo is based around the principles of fair play, respect for one’s self and others, self-discipline and friendship. Children with special needs can benefit greatly from Judo. Children who are hyperactive get an opportunity to release their energy in a controlled environment. Children who lack self-esteem are given friendship from fellow Judo players and can benefit as they see themselves progress through the grading system. Cost To start Judo it is relatively inexpensive a Judo uniform can be bought from as little as $35.00 for children. Rates for judo classes usually range from $55.00 to$89.00a month. It is also advised to purchase membership to a national organization. This allows you to grade and also gives insurance cover. Please see our ad on page 5 of Tidbits!

On Feb. 5, 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt announces a controversial plan to expand the Supreme Court to as many as 15 judges. Critics charged that Roosevelt was trying to neutralize Supreme Court justices hostile to his New Deal. By 1942, all but two of the justices were his appointees. On Jan. 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the political and spiritual leader of the Indian independence movement, is assassinated in New Delhi by a Hindu fanatic. Known as Mahatma, Gandhi’s persuasive methods of civil disobedience influenced leaders of civil rights movements, especially Martin Luther King Jr. On Jan. 31, 1950, U.S. President Harry Truman publicly announces his decision to support the development of the hydrogen bomb. In 1952, the United States successfully detonated “Mike” in the Pacific Marshall Islands. The 10.4-megaton thermonuclear device instantly vaporized an entire island.
