• It was while working as a waitress at a resort that Wilma Slaghoople and her best friend Betty first met their future husbands Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, who were employed there as bellhops. The Flintstones was broadcast on ABC television from 1960 to 1966, with cartoon characters based on the 1950s TV series The Honeymooners. Fred worked as a crane operator at Slate Rock & Gravel Company, while Wilma stayed home to raise daughter Pebbles and keep house, using the modern conveniences of a wooly mammoth vacuum cleaner, pelican washing machine, and a pig garbage disposal. • A romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy seemed doomed from the start. Jane Austen’s 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice narrated the story of the very wealthy but snobbish and rude proprietor of Pemberley Estate, and the witty and intelligent Miss Bennet. Good marriages to wealthy men were vital Turn the page for more!

to the five Bennet sisters, as their property and home was destined to be inherited by a male cousin upon the death of their father. Sparks flew from the beginning, when Mr. Darcy insulted Elizabeth’s appearance. When he finally realized his attraction and proposed to her, he did so while still reminding her of the large difference in their social statuses. Lizzie’s negative response reminded him of his arrogance and conceit, assuring him he was “the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry.” However, as with all good romances, love triumphed as Mr. Darcy realized his pride, she recognized her prejudice, and Miss Bennet accepted the second marriage proposal. • Barbara Millicent Roberts met Ken Sean Carson in 1961. Barbara, aka “Barbie”, had been on store shelves since 1959, but her hunky boyfriend wasn’t introduced until two years later, when the two “met” on the imaginary set of a TV commercial. Each of them has had a wide variety of occupations over the years, Barbie having been a teacher, dentist, veterinarian, Air Force jet pilot, firefighter, astronaut, and ballerina, among many others. Ken has worked as a pizza delivery boy, rock star, pro tennis player, and doctor, just a few of his 40+ careers. After 43 years as a couple, Mattel announced they had split in 2004, but in 2006, after Ken received an extensive makeover, they were reunited. • The 1961 musical film West Side Story chronicled the story of Tony and Maria, a tale loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, New York City style. The story revolved around the rivalry between two street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Tony, co-founder of the Jets, fell in love with Maria, the sister of the Sharks founder, a combination that could only result in disaster. Richard Beymer took the role of Tony after it was declined by Elvis Presley, and Natalie Wood was chosen over the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Jill St. John. The film, which ended with the deaths of both * Maria’s brother and Tony, took home 10 Oscars, including Best Picture and was the second highest-grossing film of the year. It ranks #51 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 best movies. • Although the love story about Lois Lane and Clark Kent, aka Superman, has been told in many different ways in various forms of media, they were first introduced in June of 1938 in the DC Comics publication Action Comics #1. Their romance started out as a rivalry, after Clark scooped Lois on a story at the Daily Planet, an exclusive on Superman. Clark was enamored Continued on page 7

Companion cats and dogs commonly have dental problems. Processed foods whether canned or dry have increased levels of carbohydrates which encourage the growth of bacteria and the formation of plaque. The next step is the deposition of tartar onto the teeth and under the gums. Bacteria and tartar alter the mouth’s pH and then combine with food to cause gingivitis and periodontal disease. Having regular dental care is the only way to prevent tooth loss, pain and you will have a healthy companion pet. The number one cause of infections in the body is from dental infections releasing bacteria into the bloodstream. Dental care is very important in all species. Common Sense Recommendations •
Daily brushing of teeth in dogs is possible and recommended. Cats rarely will tolerate brushing of teeth. Pets rarely show dental pain!
•
Dental diets help cats clean their teeth and dogs also benefit from dental diets. Not all dental diets work, so choose a quality product.
•
Canned diets usually have lower amounts of carbohydrates so feeding them will help decrease tartar build-up. Dry diets have flour binders to form a dry kibble which is starch. Starch is sugar and tends to form more tartar.
•
Genetics play a role in whether your cat or dog will have a healthy mouth. Many pets will have teeth extracted just like humans. With today’s diets cats and dogs do very well with no teeth – they gum their food and have a healthy mouth.
•
Never give ‘sugarless gum’ to cats or dogs – Xylitol is a poison to pets!
•
Talk with your veterinarian about the need for dental care at your next visit. Healthy teeth go along with a healthy body.
•
Veterinarian offer “special promotions” that help you help your companion pet have a fresher mouth during Dental Month.

Scott McQueen In times past pearls were considered to be a sound investment such as gold or real estate. That’s because to find only one pearl thousands of oysters had to be searched. Today people take shell beads and place them inside an oyster, then place it back in the water to be harvested once the oyster has covered the bead with layers of nacre. It’s no longer a mystery which oyster is carrying a pearl, they all are! Most cultured pearls are produced in Japan. The larger oysters of the South Pacific produce South Sea cultured pearls and Tahitian black cultured pearls that are larger in size. China produces freshwater pearls using mussels. You judge the quality of a pearl by the orient (the soft iridescence caused by the refraction of light by the layers of nacre) and by luster (the surface reflectivity and shine). Shape, size and color also impact their value. To tell the difference between an imitation pearl and a cultured and natural pearl rub it against the edge of a tooth. The cultured and natural pearl will feel slightly rough like fine grain sandpaper. Imitations will be smooth as glass.
It’s more than just plumbing. Safety. Security. Comfort.

Watch for Frozen Pipes, Ice Dams Q: I moved this fall from my hometown in South Florida to a small town in the Northeast. I’ve never dealt with freezing winter temperatures and snow before. My dad told me to watch out for frozen pipes, but how do I notice when they’re freezing, and what can I do to prevent it? What other problems should I watch for? -- New Guy in Portland, Maine A: The first advice I received when I moved to a Northern state was “bend your knees when you’re shoveling snow.” But there was a little bit more to know. Fortunately, most homes built in the past 30 years or so in the Northeast have higher-grade insulation than homes in the South. So pipes don’t typically freeze at the first sign of frost the way they do in Florida. Still, you’re right to be on your guard. Here are two common winter problems to look out for: --Frozen pipes: During long or very low-temperature freezing spells, keep a tap at the highest level of your home dripping, so that water moves through the pipes. Inspect the pipes in areas where insulation is low or nonexistent, such as crawlspaces or basements. You may need to run a hand along the pipe: if you feel an area that’s especially cold, or see frost buildup on a section of pipe, it’s beginning to freeze. If the pipe is swollen or already cracked, you’ve got a bigger problem. To prevent this from happening, drape towels soaked in hot water over the freezing pipe. Place a bucket underneath the towels and pour hot water over the area frequently to thaw the pipes. If the pipes have cracked or burst, shut off water to that section of the house and call a plumber. --Ice dams: These form along the eaves of a house, particularly the corners, during long cold spells. They’re sometimes caused by damage or air leaks at the edge of the roof, where warm air from inside meets colder air. The bigger the ice dam, the more potential there is for roof damage to occur. If you can safely clear the dam during above-freezing temperatures, do so; otherwise, call a roofing specialist for an evaluation. HOME TIP: Ice melt is a big help in keeping wintry walkways clear, but to prevent damage to nearby plants or lawn, be careful not to overapply it: Read the directions on how much of your selected product to use. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer. com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

FICTIONAL ROMANCES (continued): with Lois, but ironically, her affections were fixed on his alter-ego Superman. The couple didn’t tie the knot until 1996 when the event was published in the comic book to coincide with the nuptials on the TV series Lois and Clark. In 2007, they welcomed the addition of an adopted Kryptonian boy then named Chris Kent.

• Peter Parker made his first appearance in August of 1962 in the Marvel Comics’ publication Amazing Fantasy. He was an orphaned high school student in Queens, New York, living with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. When he was bitten by a radioactive spider, he attained the “agility and proportionate strength of an arachnid,” and acquired the ability to cling to walls and ceilings. In other words, he became Spiderman! Aunt May continually tried to fix him up with “that nice Watson girl next door,” a beautiful green-eyed redhead whose face was first seen in 1966. Mary Jane, or MJ for short, first met Peter when she was 13 years old, and staying with her elderly Aunt Anna. Peter was 14. They married in a Spiderman comics issue in 1987. On the big screen, the pair was popularly portrayed by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst for three films. The fourth film, released in 2012, didn’t include MJ, but rather Peter’s first girlfriend, Gwen Stacy.

The immensely popular series led to radio programs, comic books, and 89 movies, beginning with silent films in 1918. The most popular actor to play the ape-man was an Olympic hero, Johnny Weissmuller, winner of five gold medals in swimming, who starred in 12 Tarzan films from 1932 to 1948. • Homer and Marge Simpson were first introduced to TV viewers in December, 1989, along with their three children, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. The bluehaired Marge Bouvier met Homer Simpson during her final year at Springfield High School. Although the couple might be a little rough around the edges, they seem to have a way of working through their marital difficulties with unending dedication to each other. Actress Julie Kavner provides not only the voice of Marge in the animated series, but Marge’s mother Jacqueline and sisters Patty and Selma as well. Dan Castellaneta voices Homer, Grampa Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Barney Gumble, Mayor Quimby, and Hans Moleman. CAN’T GET ENOUGH...
• Author Edgar Rice Burroughs conceived the idea of the British Lord and Lady Greystoke being marooned on the coast of Africa in 1912. Lady Greystoke gave birth there, but died on her son’s first birthday, while the Lord was killed by the leader of the Mangani ape tribe. Their son, John, Clayton, Earl of Greystoke, was adopted by the ape tribe, and grew up to be their leader. Thus went the story of Tarzan over the course of 24 novels. Tarzan met Jane Porter when she and her expedition were marooned in a similar

Got me $500,000 of guaranteed level premiums for 20 years at $92/mth. My wife’s paying $85 month for $500K for 25 years and my 15 year old son has $250K at $45/mth for 15 years. We have an accident plan that covers each of us to $15K per year for accidents as well. I realize this is not true health insurance, but all I’m worried about is the big, catastrophic, health issues. Times are tough, and we gotta cut back! Dropped my health insurance, my old long term care policy and my old life insurance. So instead of paying $1,090 per month, I’m now paying $272 per month for similar if not better coverage. Especially for my life and long term care. That’s a savings of over $9,800 per year! That will cover a lot of Dr. visits and much, much, more! If you find yourself in a similar situation, get in touch with me and I’ll show you how you can save as well. If you’re happy with your health insurance, at least use this combination policy to improve your current life insurance plan! Why wouldn’t you? It’s only logical---a much more comprehensive life insurance plan with living benefits for about the same price. It’s a no brainer.

Avoid Becoming a "Groundhog Day" Investor Groundhog Day is almost here. For most of its history — which, according to some reports, dates back to the first celebration in 1886 or 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pa. — Groundhog Day held little significance for most Americans. But that changed in 1993 with the release of the movie Groundhog Day, in which a semi-embittered meteorologist, played by Bill Murray, is forced to relive the same day over and over again. He repeatedly makes poor choices, until he finally learns from his mistakes and Cindy Rose is granted the ability to move on with his life. Since the movie came out, the term “Groundhog Day” is often used to refer to a situation in which someone repeats the same mistakes. It’s a phenomenon that happens in many walks of life — including investing.
After
So, how can you avoid becoming a “Groundhog Day” investor? Here are some suggestions: Don’t chase after “hot investments.” Many investors make this same mistake over and over — they hear about a “hot” investment from a friend, relative or television commentator, and they buy it. Too often, though, by the time they purchase this investment, it’s already cooling down. Even more importantly, it just might not be suitable for them. So instead of pursuing “hot” choices, pick those investments that are appropriate for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. Don’t over-analyze short-term price fluctuations. Some investors check their portfolios' performance every day, or even several times a day. But if you’re constantly evaluating how your investments are doing over short intervals, you may be tempted to make unwise decisions in response to sudden drops or jumps. You can get a good sense of the progress you’re making toward your goals by checking your portfolio once a month. Don’t let fear and greed drive your choices. “Buy low and sell high” is the classic piece of investment advice. But too many investors only buy investments when they’re on the rise and sell them when they’re falling. In other words, they’re doing the opposite of “buy low and sell high” — and they’re being driven by fear and greed. Keep these emotions out of your investment strategy, and you’ll help yourself greatly. Don’t maintain unrealistic expectations. Some people consistently put off investing until “later,” figuring they can always catch up by putting away more money during their peak earning years. Don’t make that mistake. To achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need to invest early and keep investing, rather than wait for a time in your life when you may suddenly have more money “freed up” for investment purposes. Also, don’t anticipate that you’ll steadily earn a good rate of return on your investments. Although the financial markets have trended up in the long term, we’ve seen many down markets that have lasted for a year or longer. Factor in these fluctuations when estimating the rate of return you’ll need to achieve your goals. For these types of calculations, you may want to work with an experienced financial professional. These and other “Groundhog Day”-type investment mistakes can be costly. But you can avoid them if you maintain a solid investment strategy, if you’ve got patience and perseverance — and if you stay focused on the long-term horizon. by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Why Does My Tooth Hurt Only When I Chew? Q. Sometimes when I’m chewing, there’s a sharp pain. It goes away quickly, and may not come back for weeks. Nothing else bothers the tooth. When it happens, it’s like hitting my “funny bone”. Should I be concerned? A. Yes! You may have a condition known as “Cracked Tooth Syndrome”, which can be very painful and cause you to avoid chewing on that entire side of your mouth. Q. Why does my tooth hurt when I bite “just right”, but not all the time? A. If the crack extends into the pulp (nerve), or into sensitive dentin, chewing with just the right amount of force, or in just the right spot can cause microscopic movement of the tooth structure at the crack. The pulp becomes irritated, causing a sharp, shooting pain. The pain usually is gone in an instant, until you bite “just right” once again.

Q. What caused the crack in my tooth? A. Cracks are small fractures that typically develop as a result of excessive biting pressure. Some people like to chomp on ice, nuts, jaw breakers, pencils, and other hard things. Bruxism (clenching or grinding habit) is a major cause of Cracked Tooth Syndrome. Untreated decay and large fillings weaken the tooth structure and make the tooth more susceptible to fracture. Silver/ mercury (amalgam) fillings can expand and crack the tooth. Trauma or sudden impact to the tooth may crack the tooth – from sports injuries or biting on a hidden hard object in food. Q. Can Cracked Tooth Syndrome get worse? Q. Yes! Cracked Tooth Pain can cause the tooth to be sensitive to cold, and in time, bacteria can spread down the crack and infect the pulp. If the crack splits down into the root, the tooth usually cannot be restored, requiring Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits 720-870-9500 10470 S Progress Way #100 Parker, CO 80134
