* Northern Italians engage in fruit-flinging silliness when they observe Iverea Carnevale’s “Battle of the Oranges.” During the three days of the country’s annual carnival (held during February or March), the local populace re-enacts an 1194 revolt by the people against a cruel count and his troops. The original revolt was conducted with stones, but today, the citizenry have smartly taken to instead using the oranges that exceed the country’s yearly production quota. Some locals really re-enact the scene enthusiastically, so if you happen to attend, don’t forget to duck. * In the spring, India celebrates the Holi Festival of Colors. This “colorful” festival was re-created in the 2006 independent film, “Outsourced” (the inspiration for a similarly named NBC sitcom last year). All the colors of the rainbow are tossed around in powders that men and women throw at each other. In addition, people pitch buckets of water on each other, making for a messy good time. These playful activities are accompanied by dancing and the frenzied beating of drums.

This festival has political and socio-economic significance as well, since it marks one of the only times where one sees men and women of various social castes mixing in Indian society.

* Thailand’s Songkran Festival, held April 13-15, is part of the Thai New Year and is a very wet tradition. While “Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that in Thai refers to the influence of the sun on certain Zodiac signs, it is water that captures the attention and imagination of all the locals. *

As part of their celebration of the vernal equinox, the people congregate with buckets, hoses, water balloons, water pistols and anything else that can capably transport water for the purposes of drenching everything and everyone from head to toe. This may well be the world’s biggest water fight. Of course, “fight” isn’t really the right word, because the action of tossing water to others is actually perceived as a demonstration of kindness and respect during the festival. Maybe the “world’s biggest water hug” would be more appropriate.

Now planarians are posing a fresh mystery for scientists at UCSF who have discovered that every cell in every planarian's body lacks a key structure that all other animals in the world - from bugs to humans - possess in order to divide and multiply, indeed to stay alive.

The structure is called a centrosome, and the UCSF researchers who study the biology of planarians had assumed that those little worms must also need centrosomes for their cells to divide and reproduce.

In fact, the scientists discovered, planarian cells never have had any of those crucial cell structures, yet they continue to thrive and reproduce.

A report on the discovery appears in this week's ScienceExpress, the online edition of the journal Science.

All this may seem like an obscure discovery, except that it poses fundamental questions about life and survival and evolution, say UCSF biochemist Wallace F. Marshall and Juliette Azimzadeh, a postdoctoral researcher in Marshall's laboratory.

"It's like trying to think about a body without a heart," Marshall says.

The big interest in planarians, Marshall said, is their unique ability to regenerate, and "regenerative medicine" - the effort to restore or replace diseased parts of the human body like heart and brain tissue - is the most swiftly advancing field of medical science today. Stem cells are a key to this kind of medicine.

"Now that we know that some animals like planarians reproduce without centrosomes, we need to rethink what those cell structures actually do," he said.

Cell division is a crucial function in all humans, and cancer, for example, is a disease of abnormally dividing cells. Some forms of mental abnormality in childhood involve abnormal cell division, but whether or how the centrosomes are involved is unknown.

Azimzadeh is interested in the evolution of planarians, whose ancestry in the worm world goes back for many millions of years.

By probing deeply into the history of their genes, she and her colleagues have found that somewhere back among their evolutionary ancestors, flatworm cells held centrosomes but lost them long ago.

That loss, say the researchers, "is a remarkable event in the evolutionary history of animals."

Q: Last winter, a couple of pipes in my basement burst. The plumber said that they froze and burst. How can I prevent this from happening again? -- Darla G., Dothan, Ala. A: Frozen pipes, as you unfortunately discovered, are a serious problem that quickly can become costly, especially if flooding occurs and damages furniture and other items.

Before talking about prevention, let’s quickly look at emergency measures. When the worst occurs -- a burst pipe -- the water feed to the pipe must be shut off immediately in order to prevent flooding, and then a plumber contacted to fix the problem as soon as possible.

Of course, this problem tends to occur at the worst possible times and in the worst way -- the first prolonged cold snap of the year, when no one wants to be wading through freezing water to the shutoff valve. Or, when homeowners are on vacation and flooding occurs for hours ... or days. (This happened to me several years ago: My upstairs neighbor’s pipes burst, and the water flooded my condo.)

To prevent this problem, take steps to keep the temperature around those pipes above freezing. Pipes in an uninsulated basement should be wrapped in pipe insulation (available at the hardware or homeimprovement store). Outdoor spigots should have the water flow to them turned off during the coldest months, and then be drained; if you can’t turn off the water, purchase insulated spigot covers.

During freezing weather, turn on the cold-water tap in the highest and lowest parts of your house, as well as the outdoor spigot. Keep it at a thin trickle or fast drip.

Check on all of your pipe runs throughout the freezing period. Run your hand along the pipes when you can. If you feel a spot that’s significantly colder than the rest of the run, there’s a good chance that water is freezing in that spot. If you see frost or condensation on a section of a pipe, or if you see a bulge in the pipe run, those also are telltale signs.

Immediately wrap the freezing pipe in a towel soaked in near-boiling water. Pour hot water over the towel periodically to keep it warm.

If a bulge in the pipe occurs, or you can’t thaw it, contact a plumber immediately to take additional measures to save the pipe. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

What you may not have known is that it involves 30,000 people engaged in pitched aerial battle with the beloved red (or green) fruit. For two hours, natives toss tomatoes at each other until 125,000 of them pepper the landscape and people. It’s all in good fun, celebrating a similar spontaneous food fight that broke out during a parade over 65 years ago. In fact, it’s so big that a series of smaller ropes are attached all over its surface to accommodate the swarm of hands there to participate. Seen from a distance, it might look as if a massive synthetic snake several blocks long and taller than a car had taken control of the freeway. So, now we have an idea of what to eat, when to eat, and how much do we eat.

If you are eating every 2-3 hours, your metabolism will begin to work at peak performance, and your body will actually get on a “clock.” The result? You’ll begin to feel hungry every 2-3 hours. This is a good thing! You’ll also notice you will fill up faster and will eat less at each meal, because you’re constantly fueling your body, rather then starving it and then gorging it all at once!

Listen to your body! We’re all very different from one another when it comes to proper portions for our bodies.

It’s Super Bowl time again. And whether you’re a sports fan or not, you can probably learn something from the Super Bowl teams that you can apply to other endeavors — such as investing.

What might these lessons be?

Pick players carefully. Super Bowl teams don’t usually get there out of luck; they’ve made it in part because they have carefully chosen their players. And to potentially achieve success as an investor, you, too, need carefully chosen “players” — investments that are chosen for your individual situation.

Choose a diversified mix of players. Not only do Super Bowl teams have good players, but they have good ones at many different positions — and these players tend to play well together. As an investor, you should own a variety of investments with different capabilities — such as stocks for growth and bonds for income — and your various investments should complement, rather than duplicate, one another. Strive to build a diversified portfolio containing investments appropriate for your situation, such as stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and other vehicles. Diversifying your holdings may help reduce the effects of market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.)

Follow a “game plan.” Super Bowl teams are skilled at creating game plans designed to maximize their own strengths and exploit their opponents’ weaknesses. When you invest, you also can benefit from a game plan — a strategy to help you work toward your goals. This strategy may incorporate several elements, such as taking full advantage of your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, pursuing new investment opportunities as they arise and reviewing your portfolio regularly to make sure it’s still appropriate for your needs.

Stay dedicated to your goals. Virtually all Super Bowl teams have had to overcome obstacles, such as injuries, bad weather and a tough schedule. But through persistence and a constant devotion to their ultimate goal, they persevere. As an investor, you’ll face some challenges, too, such as political and economic turmoil that can upset the financial markets. But if you own a diversified mix of quality investments and follow a long-term strategy that’s tailored to your objectives, time horizon and risk tolerance, you can keep moving forward, despite the “bumps in the road” that all investors face.

Get good coaching. Super Bowl teams typically are well-coached, with disciplined head coaches and innovative offensive and defensive coordinators. When you’re trying to achieve many financial goals — such as a comfortable retirement, control over your investment taxes and a legacy to leave to your family — you, too, can benefit from strong “coaching.” As your “head coach,” you might choose a financial professional — someone who can help you identify your goals and recommend an appropriate investment strategy to help you work toward them. And your financial professional can coordinate activities with your other “coaches,” such as your tax and legal advisors.
