Diesel Repair & Performance

by Kathy Wolfe

Sometimes it’s difficult to comprehend the abilities of the incredible human body. This week, Tidbits looks at how the sensory cells related to smell, sight, hearing, touch, and taste send their signals to the brain for interpretation. Amazing! • The only sense that is fully developed at birth is smell. Within days of birth, a newborn is able to recognize his or her mother’s smell.

• Although the tongue has the taste buds, the nose is critical to taste. While the taste buds distinguish sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and savory, any other tastes are perceived by the nose’s five million olfactory receptors. This explains why your favorite foods don’t seem to taste right when you have a cold or stuffy nose.

• Diverse activities program 7 days a week. We have been locally owned and operated since our inception in 1997.

• Vivid memories can be triggered by our sense of smell, for example, a sadness at the aroma of roses, which may be a reminder of a loved one’s funeral. This is because scent receptors are connected to the area of the brain in charge of memory and emotions. An aversion can develop if an unpleasant experience is associated with it. For instance, a foul-smelling or tasting cherry cough syrup ingested as a child can produce a dislike for all things cherry as an adult.

FIVE SENSES (continued): After a year, people can recall smells with about 65% accuracy. Compare this with visual recall, which is only 50% after a period of three months. • If you think you have a good sense of smell, consider that while you have five million scent receptors, your dog has about 220 million!

• Those little raised bumps on the surface of your tongue are not actually your taste buds. They are called papillae, and the majority of your taste buds are clustered on them. The buds’ purpose is to sense sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and savory tastes. Each papilla is home to 100 to 200 buds.

• Taste buds can be found on the tongue, in the throat, on the esophagus, and on the roof of the mouth. These 9,000 cells contain chemoreceptors that respond to chemicals in food. When you eat a certain food, your mouth’s saliva helps break it down, which in turn causes the receptors to communicate to the brain through sensory nerves. Your brain then lets you know what you taste. • By age 60, most adults will have lost about half their taste buds.

• As many cancer patients can attest, chemotherapy can seriously damage the sense of taste. Infections and blows to the head can also cause impairment.

• Due to the heat they generate, chili peppers stimulate pain receptors rather than taste buds.

• Millions of tiny nerve endings are responsible for telling you if something is hot or cold, or if something is hurting you. The home of these nerve endings is in the dermis, the bottom layer of your skin. The nerve endings carry information to the spinal cord, which informs the brain what feeling is being conveyed, all in a fraction of a second!

• There are 20 different varieties of nerve endings, all with a different significance. The most common types are temperature, pain, and pressure receptors. Pain receptors are the most numerous. A little square patch of skin measuring .4 inch (10 mm) on each side contains 200 pain receptors, but only 15 for pressure of touch, six for cold, and one for hot. Pain receptors are very important for alerting the brain that the body is hurt.

• Some areas of the body have more nerve endings than others, making them more sensitive. That’s why it hurts so much when you bite your tongue. Yet this area has receptors that are much less effective at sensing hot or cold, which is why you burn your mouth on hot foods.

• As skin ages, it has a decreased response to pain and temperature changes. Consequently, older folks have a greater risk of injury from burns and hypothermia.

• It’s the colored iris of the eye that makes the pupil change in size, depending on the amount of available light. It controls light levels inside the eye, much like the aperture on a camera. The eye color comes from microscopic pigment cells called melanin.

• We are able to see things because beams of light bounce off of an object and enter the cornea – the thick, transparent layer on the surface of the eye. From there, the light rays pass through the pupil and into the lens. The lens focuses the image and sends it to the back surface of the eyeball, the retina. More than 150 million light-sensitive cells work at sending the information upside-down to the brain. The brain turns the image right-side-up and tells you what you are seeing. • About one in every 12 males is color-blind. Some have monochromatic colorblindness, which means they see every-thing in shades of gray. Those with Continued on page 5

The first rule of feeding cats is feed them what they will eat. The second rule of feeding cats is feed them the best diet you can find. So, how do you know what to feed? There are so many diets on the market these days with so many claims, promotional endorsements and pseudo-science that even a veterinarian has a hard time evaluating the science behind the diet. Many diets appeal to fads and the vegetarian myth but the cat is an obligate carnivore. Most of what is on cat food labels is misleading and only tells part of the story. The label reports crude protein not digestible protein, crude fat not digestible fat, there is usually no mention of the % of carbohydrates, there is no mention of the type of fiber – soluble vs insoluble and there is no mention of the calories per serving (new for 2011 will be calories per serving – the first big change in pet food labeling to help the consumer). The list of ingredients is not a true reflection of what the food actually consists of. The first four ingredients are what make up the food’s nutritional content. Misleading terms and percentage of ingredients mask the true quality rating of the food. Cats eat protein and fat because they are obligate carnivores! Natural and/or raw food diets can be a problem with contamination versus hunting cats with fresh kill and normal flora. Natural food diets should not be a spin-off of human natural food thinking (including apple, cranberry, rosemary, etc.) but should emphasize quality protein and fat sources. Quality cat foods have verifiable analyses and feeding trials that prove the food is healthy for cats. Reading a label does not always give you answers that you need to make a good decision. You may need to use the 1(800) number and ask questions: · Compare dry and canned food on a dry matter basis and what is the calorie content?

Financial Advisor

E-470

· How much carbohydrate makes up the diet? · What are the digestible amounts and sources of protein and fat?

During your annual cat’s physical examination ask your veterinarian for food recommendations. Feeding a specific diet for 1 month and observing quality of haircoat, activity level, amount of food and water consumed, output of feces and urine and your cat’s interest in people and play will be the best observed indicators of how the food is performing. Jasper is composed of chalcedony, microcrystalline quartz and other minerals that combine to create colorful bands and patterns. The Scott McQueen large variety of jasper patterns are used to give the stones their various names. The most popular is landscape jasper so named because of the tiny landscape panoramas that appear thereon. Picture jaspers exhibit combinations of patterns (such as banding from flow or depositional patterns caused by water or wind), and color variations the look like scenes or images on a cut section. There is also orbicular (circular) jasper, and ribbon jasper. See the variety in the stones shown above. Jasper is found in many countries and used often as architectural adornments on buildings. Perhaps that is because the new Jerusalem descending from heaven is described as follows: "It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal." Revelation 21:11. At least three states have cities named after this stone: Alabama, Indiiana, and Texas.

• Ever wonder why all of a sudden in your 40s you now need reading glasses? This is due to a thickening of the eye’s lens as the body ages. • The average person blinks once every two to ten seconds. Each blink lasts about 0.3 seconds. Multiply it out, and you’ll see that blinking causes your eyes to be closed about 30 minutes every day. • If an individual has two different colored eyes, the condition is known as heterochromia. • Decibels are units of measurement used to determine sound levels. The sound of breathing is at the 10-decibel level, and a whisper measures 20. Normal talking is around 50 to 60 decibels, a loud snore generates 65, and the sound of a jackhammer registers about 115. A jet takeoff and a gunshot are both in the 140-decibel range.

• Every time an object makes a noise, it sends vibrations through the air. These sound waves are channeled into the ear canal by the outer ear. The waves then hit the eardrum, which begins to vibrate, which in turn sets the ear’s hammer, anvil, and stirrup vibrating. The stirrup’s vibrations cause nerve endings to move, and the nerve endings change the vibrations into information that is sent to the brain along the auditory nerve, again, all in a split second!

Home for the Holidays by Rosette Subia

The holidays seem to arrive earlier each year. Our time is spread so thin between work, family and, hopefully, a few minutes for ourselves. With days dwindling until Christmas it may be difficult to find the time to be as thoughtful as we’d like in our gift giving. Here are a few gift ideas for our loved ones on their way home from rehabilitation. Assistive items may be a great option. These items could make day-to-day functioning easier and help stay independent longer. Many stores offer specialized equipment such as audio clocks and talking wristwatches. Other helpful devices include adapted cutting boards with side bumpers, pins to hold food in place and suction cups to keep the board from slipping: or jar pops to life flip-top food cans; and even knives designed for one-handed use or for those with limited hand strength. Perhaps a stocking could be stuffed with a button hook, zipper pull, long handle comb or hair brush. Each person has their onw special need so ask you loved ones physical or occupational therapist for recommendations and resources. Happy Holidays Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits!

Protecting Your Lawn in Winter The early Denver area winter season can be unpredictable. With temperatures ranging from mild to freezing, and precipitation patterns quite literally all over the place, we never know exactly what to expect in December and beyond. It’s no surprise that these erratic conditions tend to wreak havoc on our lawns. Not to worry – winter doesn’t have to mean devastation for your lawn. Simply follow these easy tips and enjoy a strong, hardy lawn no matter the season.

Watch Those Tire Tracks Significant lawn damage can arise during these early winter months – especially when a vehicle is involved. Many homeowners have driveways that border their front lawns. While grazing that border with a tire may not cause noticeable damage during the summer, severe “stripping” of the lawn often occurs during sloppy conditions. Remaining extra cautious now will mean a fuller, healthier lawn come springtime. Don’t Leave Your Leaves Is your lawn littered with heavy, wet leaves? Extended leaf coverage can suffocate the lawn and lead to a wide range of harmful turf diseases. A quick clean-up or raking session will get your lawn back on track. Tidy Up Items left on the lawn, such as toys, patio furniture, and ornaments, place unnecessary stress on grass plants in their weakened state. Avoid damage and potential lawn baldness by storing items in your shed or garage. Regular tidying up can make a world of difference to the look and feel of your lawn.

Ask about volume discounts!

COMPLETE

Decrease Foot Traffic The feeling of grass between your toes is, unfortunately, a luxury reserved for the warmer seasons. The December through January stretch often brings about wet, gray weather that can leave your lawn a matted down mess. Foot traffic across the lawn will only result in added stress to your already exhausted turf. If possible, avoid walking on the lawn temporarily until local conditions improve.

New Beginning

Q. Who’s Birthday is it Anyway? A. In our rush for shopping, cooking, partying, traveling, etc., it’s so easy to forget “The Reason for the Season”. Let’s just pause for a moment or two, and in the quietude of our hearts, wish “Happy Birthday” to the Christ Child. Q. Why do some people put an “X” in front of the “------mas” of “Christmas” ? A. I don’t know. Maybe they’re Cindy Rose just not thinking; too “busy”, or too “stressed out”, and “accidentally” take “Christ” out of “Christmas? I just don’t like that “X”. Recently, I found a painting that has vivid colors of the Season. In it Santa is standing next to the fireplace in a darkened room lit by a single candle. The children must have wanted to give Santa a little light for his most important activities that night. Santa has noticed the Nativity on the nearby table. He’s holding the porcelain Christ Child in the manger, deep in thought. A poem on the back of the picture sets the scene, and shares what I like to call “Santa’s Prayer”: The Spirit of Christmas By Greg Olson 2009

By the magical light of a small Christmas candle, A little old man tries to carefully handle, The small porcelain manger which serves as a bed, For the wee Baby Jesus to lay down His head.

In wonder he brings the manger up to his view, Smiles at the baby and whispers, “I love you!” I love you for bringing this season of joy, I love you for growing to a man from a boy; For being our Light and leading the way, For the Spirit which makes Christmas Day! You’ve been my mentor, my model, my hero and guide, Please continue to help me and stay by my side. I’ve tried to follow your teachings and give as you gave, Reminding all to be kind and that it’s wise to behave. Help me to serve others and bring them your Light, Especially, the children, please bless them tonight! Some have so very little, scarce food for their table, You know how it feels – you were born in a stable! Bless all their mothers and fathers with a knowledge that’s sure. The best gift they can give is their love, strong and pure. That’s the Spirit of Christmas when all’s said and done, God’s gift of love, that came as His Son!

All your protection under one roof.

Then back to His mother the child is returned. The Nativity glows as the candle is burned.

Snow Plow A blonde driving a car became lost in a snowstorm. She didn't panic however, because she remembered what her dad had once told her. "If you ever get stuck in a snowstorm, just wait for a snow plow to come by and follow it." Sure enough, pretty soon a snow plow came by, and she started to follow it. She followed the plow for about forty-five minutes. Finally the driver of the truck got out and asked her what she was doing. And she explained that her dad had told her if she ever got stuck in a snow storm, to follow a plow. The driver nodded and said, "Well, I'm done with the Wal-Mart parking lot, do you want to follow me over to Best Buy now?"
