A LONG LITTLE DOGGIE!” by Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits looks at the noble, fierce little dogs bred to hunt badgers. Dachshund means “badger hound” in German. Affectionately called “wiener dogs,” they can be very comical. • Dachshunds are good watchdogs because of their loud fierce barks, which, of course, can be annoying at times! They are loved by children because of their size and distinctive cuteness. Even though dachshunds are not known for their ease of training, they are very popular. Some say they are low-slung hounds with big attitudes!
• Illustrations from as far back as the 1500s depict dogs similar to dachshunds. Some historians believe that dachshunds have been around since ancient Egypt. However, the most widely held story of the funny little “hot dogs” origins is that they were developed in Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were bred to be dogs with excellent digging skills and the ability to chase rabbits, foxes and even more formidable animals such as boars and badgers. turn the page for more!

A LONG LITTLE DOGGIE (continued): • Traditionally, dachshunds have been seen as a symbol of Germany. During World War I, they were not wanted by the people of England or the United States. Americans began calling the dogs “liberty pups,” and political cartoonists drew dachshunds to ridicule the Germans. Some dislike for the dogs lingered during World War II but was not as widespread. Their popularity from 1930 to 1940, before and during World War II, actually advanced from 28th to sixth. After the big wars, love for dachshunds became the predominant emotion. • Dachshunds have been recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1885. Today, they consistently rank in the top 10 breeds for popularity. While the most popular dachshunds are black and tan or solid tan (red) in color, many different colors for the breed exist. The reds can vary from strawberry blonde to deep auburn; there are chocolate, crème and gray coats as well. Some interesting colorations are brindles, dapple and piebalds. There are three varieties of dachshund that can be any of the colors: wire-haired, smooth and longhaired. • The following story has never been confirmed, but it makes for great reading about hot dogs: In 1852, the butcher’s guild in Frankfurt, Germany, developed a smoked, spicy sausage in a casing that resembled the low-riding German Dachshund. It was dubbed the “little-dog” or “dachshund sausage.” Legend says that cartoonist Tad Dorgan was inspired by vendors at a 1901 polo match in New York who offered “red-hot dachshund sausages” to fans in the grandstands. Dorgan drew a smiling dachshund in a long bun for one of his cartoons. He couldn’t spell dachshund, so his caption read “hot dog!” • There are many famous people who have loved their pet dachshunds. The first (and maybe only) dachshunds to live in the White House belonged to U.S. President Grover Cleveland. Actually, according the New York Times, September 26, 1893 edition, the dogs were a gift for Mrs. Cleveland from the Unites States Consul in Bremen, Germany. They were sent on a 4,000-mile (6,437-km) journey to live at the nation’s capital. Surely that was an entertaining trip for the crew. • Pablo Picasso painted many canvases and even a lunch plate with the likeness of his dachshund, Lump. Picasso actually painted a copy of a famous painting by Velazquez, called “Las Meninas.” In Picasso’s version, a large mastiff is replaced by a much smaller dog, Lump! (Lump is pronounced loomp in German and means “rascal,” appropriate for a dachshund!) Continued on page 9

Cat Q & A Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Understanding Your Cat – Part 4 A cat’s territory is where it lives, sleeps, plays, hunts, interacts with other cats and other animals (including humans). Understanding and observing what your cat does will help you be a better friend to your cat. Cats know how to be cats so any problems in the human/cat relationship are usually a misunderstanding on the human’s part. Trying to put human values on a cat never works . . . it is time for you to get a dog. People train dogs and cats train people. If that is not clear to you by now then you have chosen the wrong species to befriend. The best you can hope for in living with a cat is an equal sharing relationship – you cannot dominate a cat. Answer this: “If you were 6 inches tall how would most cats treat you?” Living with humans many times can be boring. Cats live to hunt or play, to eat, and have positive interactions with other cats or other animals. Humans are not essential for a cat’s happy life. Barn cats have a job and they live a pretty stress-free life. If they are smart they will live a long time. If cats live with people, many cats become lethargic, over-weight, stressed out and rather unhappy. Creating an indoor environment that challenges the hunting nature of the species – playing with toys, bird watching from the windows, climbing to high perches, running and romping with a playmate and having mental games to play will keep your cat happy. If a cat chooses to be your special pal you have the respect of a species that is dominant to you. Gaining the trust and respect of a feline is the highest compliment for a human. Dr. Tony Buffington of The Ohio State University has been studying how to enrich the indoor cat experience. See what the researchers have found out: http:indoorpet. osu.edu/pets and look at other sites like National Geographic Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver
¥ It was William E. Vaughan who made the following sage observation: “To err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer.” ¥ Those who study such things say that your brain can store 100 times as much information as a typical desktop computer. ¥ In 1930, United Airlines began using the aviation industry’s first stewardesses. To qualify for the position, applicants had to be registered nurses. ¥ George Washington, Dolley Madison, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton helped to found this country, but that wasn’t all they had in common; they were also all big fans of eating ice cream. ¥ If you ever hear an orangutan belch, you’d better watch out. That’s a warning sign that you’re encroaching on his territory. ¥ When Andrew Jackson was running for president in 1828, an opponent called him a jackass. Instead of being offended, Jackson embraced the epithet, using the image of a donkey in campaign materials to represent his stubborn refusal to knuckle under to big business. Later, Thomas Nash, a political cartoonist in New York, started using the donkey to represent the Democratic Party as a whole. ¥ If you’re a well-traveled person, you might have noticed that the average woman in Scandinavia is taller than the average man in Asia.

s Tips: Water hazards can psyche you out as soon
Skips Tips:
as you get a look at them, when all you see between your ball and the target is wet. The biggest mistake players make is to try to lift the ball into the air. When you do that it becomes a weak, arms only shot. And even if you hit it square, You’ll probably lack the power you need- and you’ll be headed for the drop area to try again. To fly a ball over water, first make a good rehearsal. Take a practice swing adjacent to the ball while thinking about hitting down pretty aggressively, even if you’re using a longer iron or hybrid. Actually make a divot even with the ball or just ahead of it, then step in and match your swing to the one you just made. Remember, the more you try to help it up,the greater your chances of going in the drink.

Over the last few week’s we’ve talked about tourmalines: rubellite (red/pink), green, paraiba (blue/green), yellow, and blue tourmalines. There is one more tourmaline that creators of specialized jewelry pieces love – the multicolored tourmaline. Because each multi-colored tourmaline is absolutely unique from the next jewelry makers are able to create completely inimitable works of art. Even two stones cut from the same raw crystal can differ in color adding to the varying possibilities for goldsmiths and designers. Tourmalines are not only fashionable as jewelry but may also have therapeutic uses. Many believe they possess energizing and restorative qualities that come from their wealth of minerals and energetic conductivity. If you own a multicolored tourmaline piece you can be almost positive that it is absolutely unique. If you don’t, ask your jeweler to show you one. They’re magnificent. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta
Q: Late one night last week, my husband jumped up and said he’d seen a mouse scurry under one of the kitchen cabinets. I put a sticky trap down near the cabinet he mentioned, but haven’t caught a mouse yet. Any ideas? -- Sherry in Salem, N.H. A: Mice can be pretty good at avoiding certain traps, which, as you’ve found, is pretty frustrating. And if your husband has seen one, there’s bound to be more -- especially at this time of year, as wild creatures begin to look for places to hunker down for the winter. If you have a professional pest-control service that visits routinely (twice per year, at least), be sure to mention the possible infestation. The serviceperson likely will put down more traps and ask you to call them if a mouse is caught. Meantime, look for signs of mouse infestation. You likely will find their droppings in areas of the kitchen where humans don’t spend a lot of time, such as the corners of lower kitchen cabinets. You may see gnawed-on areas of the lower walls, baseboards or cabinets, or the sawdust remainders of such gnawing. House mice also have a musky odor; if you notice this in a particular area of the house, a nest may be nearby. Sticky traps, or glue traps, are cost effective and quick to set up -- you simply peel back the plastic covering and set the trap face up against a wall in an area where mouse activity is indicated or has been noticed. You also can try the more traditional “snap trap,” which can stay in place longer and be reused. Set more traps than you think you’ll need, but make sure that they’re out of reach of pets and children. Bait traps with favorite mice items like a tiny bit of cheese or a dot of peanut butter. Another method is poisoned bait. This is sold in several forms, but one less accessible method is to purchase sealed pellets. These are poison pellets inside a sealed container that you place inside the wall or in a location pets can’t reach but mice can. The mice chew through the container to eat the pellet. To further reduce a mouse infestation, clean out cabinets that contain food items as well as your pantry. Inspect containers for evidence of gnawing or other access by mice, and discard affected containers. Place grains and flour in glass or food-grade plastic containers. Store boxed items off the floor and away from known mice access points. Locate and seal holes in your home’s walls, exterior and interior, that are larger than 1/4 inch. For holes that can’t or should not be sealed (like soffit air vents), make sure that screens and similar barriers are in place and in good repair. HOME TIP: Have a large gap around a pipe or a hole that you don’t have time to seal up? Tuck a piece of steel wool into the gap and tack in place with a bit of caulk. Send your questions or comments to ask@thisisahammer. com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

A LONG LITTLE DOGGIE (continued): • John Wayne’s family had a dachshund named Blackie who became a hero when he awakened Wayne’s wife during a house fire in 1958 with his tenacious bark. • The first dachshund in England was owned by Queen Victoria in 1839. Her husband, German Prince Albert, gave her the dog as a gift and soon brought more of the puppies to the country. The breed quickly gained popularity and was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1877. • Gergweis, Germany, the “Dachshund Capital of the World,” once had so many dachshunds that they outnumbered people two to one. They were used as a tourist attraction! • All three “Toy Story” movies have had a “Slinky” dachshund in them who has been a big hit with kids and adults alike. The second movie actually had a real dachshund puppy in it, Buster, who helped save a toy taken to a yard sale. • There are some exciting “wiener dog” events around the world that draw crowds for fun and laughter as the popular little dogs entertain. Even when dachshunds don’t intend to entertain, they are entertaining! • The 20th Annual Weiner Walk and Dachshund Picnic was held at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen, British Columbia in August. Some years have seen as many as 300 dog lovers and their canines. The event is put on by the Western Dachshund Club and includes walks around the park, a costume parade and contest, contests for best trick, longest dog, oldest dog and more. As could be expected, there are drinks and snacks for sale, including hot dogs! • Dachshund Races are fun events that can be found in numerous places. Dachshund lovers as well as those who just want to enjoy the comedy of the sight gather to watch the large races that are part of the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals in Buda, Texas; Los Alamitos, California; Findlay, Ohio; and San Diego, California. If you missed these big events this year, don’t worry, the finals are held prior to the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade in December before the Holiday Bowl. The finalists get to be in the parade on the Wienerschnitzel float. (Wienerschnitzel is a chain of hot dog restaurants that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011.) • The Dachshund Club of America opposes “wiener racing,” because many of the events precede greyhound races, which are abusive to greyhounds. Also, racing can lead to back injuries in dachshunds.

Basic Bankruptcy Information (part 1): There are two distinct options for consumers through bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. While either option can lead to a forgiveness of dischargeable debts, the differences between the two chapters are significant. A Chapter 7 is considered a straight bankruptcy. Generally it takes approximately 4 to 6 months from the date a case is filed until the time when the anticipated Order discharging qualifying debts enters. Chapter 13, on the other hand, is a repayment plan. The minimum duration for a plan is 3 years and the maximum is 5 years. Once payments are completed, a discharge order an enter. The repayment plan can be a viable tool for addressing mortgage arrears, tax liability, vehicle loans, and many other areas of concern. For either Chapter, an appearance at a Meeting of Creditors is required. The Meeting is automatically scheduled and typically takes place about a month, to a month and a half, after the case is filed and typically lasts about 5 to 15 minutes.

Ask the Dentist

Master, Academy of General Dentistry
Q. How did we arrive at today’s modern tooth cleaning products? A. There is quite a long history of various dental “tools”. Q.
How long have we had toothbrushes?
A.
Longer than most of us can remember. The toothbrush dates back to the Stone Age, when small twigs or sticks were mashed together to create a broader surface for cleaning around the teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush – in the 1490’s. Europe adopted the bristle toothbrush in the 17th century, and American colonial dentists encouraged its use.
In 1880 the first electric toothbrush appeared, but was not very effective. The Swiss invented the first effective electric toothbrush right after World War II ended. In 1961 the first cordless electric toothbrush was marketed and soon became popular. Today we have a nearlyunlimited variety styles, colors, sizes, and designs of toothbrushes.
Q.
When is my toothbrush worn out?
Q.
Your toothbrush has “had it” when the bristles point every which way. Change your toothbrush every three months, before it gets to “every which way”.
Q. Q.
What about toothpaste? Early civilizations concocted various powders used to clean teeth. Ingredients included powdered fruit, ground up or burnt shells, sometimes mixed with honey and dried flowers. Other, less appetizing concoctions added rabbit heads, mice, lizard livers, and urine. (At least give them credit for being creative!) Sadly, many of these early toothpastes were highly abrasive or corrosive, which dissolved tooth anamel. Toothpaste as we know it first came to market in the 1800’s. These early “modern” toothpastes included soap and chalk powders. The first toothpaste tube came on the scene in 1892. In 1956 Proctor and Gamble developed “Crest” toothpaste, which added flouride to fight cavities.
Q. A.
Toothpicks? To o t h p i c k s have been around for a long, long time. Ancient drawings and texts mention small pointed devices used to clean food from the teeth. Some were carved from twigs or made from silver, gold, bronze or other available metals. Dentistry An Illustrated History states: “In one regard at least, upper-class Romans outdid hygiene-conscious people today: When guests were invited to dinner, they were provided not only with spoons and knives, but also with elaborately decorated toothpicks of metal, often of gold, which they took home with them. And it was considered quite proper to pick the teeth between each course of the meal!” (Now don’t you wish you had a box of those gold toothpicks?)

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky PHOTO: Trisha Goddard Q: I’ve been hearing rumors that Michael J. Fox is returning to series television. Is it true? -- Jessica B., Miami A: Rumors had been floating around for weeks, and NBC recently confirmed that Michael will coming back to series TV more than a decade after he left to concentrate on fighting Parkinson’s disease. His new comedy series, which will be loosely based on his life, will premiere in fall 2013 and has a 22-episode commitment from the network. Michael will play a husband and father of three from New York City who is dealing with family, career and challenges that include Parkinson’s. *** Q: I loved watching Trisha Goddard when she guest-hosted for Maury Povich, and I recently saw a commercial for her own talk show. Can you tell me a bit about it? -- Deena W., via e-mail A: I had the chance to speak with the lovely Brit recently, and she gave me the scoop on what her new show will be about. “My topics are all of life’s dramas,” Trisha explained. “You know, happy, sad, humor too -- the whole gamut of relationships. On my show in England, we had on older people who wanted to find out, ‘Is this my sister, my cousin?’ or ‘Is it really my parent?’ as an adult. And obviously there’s a lot invested in that if you’ve been brought up to believe that somebody was your parent and isn’t. We’ll also cover the universal issues that everyone has: trust, betrayal, happiness, joy and identity.” And when celebrities appear on the show, it won’t be as window dressing, or to promote their new movie. “A celebrity will be there for what they’re going through and what experience they can bring to the show rather than for the celebrity’s sake. Again, that’s what I did on my show in England. It catches on with the celebrities who are interested in being real.” *** Q: When will “Glee” be back? -- Tommy H., Charlotte, N.C. A: “Glee” returns to Fox for its 22-epsiode fourth season on Sept. 13 at 9/8c, and it promises some big-name guest stars to get the show rolling. Sarah Jessica Parker plays the kooky online editor for “Vogue” and mentor for Chris Colfer’s Kurt, and Kate Hudson will play a nemesis of sorts for Lea Michele’s Rachel. *** Q: Will I ever get to see Amanda Bynes on anything other than a police blotter? It seems she’s always in the news for things other than acting. -- Darren D., via e-mail A: The young starlet is hopefully not following in the self-destructive footprints of Lindsay Lohan, but so far, it’s not looking good. Amanda was recently in her fourth car accident of the past six months -- add that to her recent DUI and hit-and-runs, and her flight from a cop who pulled her over for talking on her cell phone. Here’s hoping the “Easy A” actress gets her head on straight soon. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. To combat market volatility, you need to own a broadly diversified portfolio that can handle “bumps,” “cliffs” and other rugged investment terrain. This means you’ll need a mix of stocks, bonds and other securities that are suitable for your needs. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can reduce the impact of market volatility, it cannot guarantee profits or protect against losses.) You may also need to “rebalance” your portfolio to ensure that it’s still aligned with your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, despite the impact of volatility. Now, let’s turn to taxes. Even if taxes on income, capital gains and dividends do rise, they will still, in all likelihood, be much lower than they’ve been at various points in the past. Nonetheless, you may want to consider a variety of steps, including the following: Take advantage of tax-deferred vehicles. Contribute as much as possible to your traditional IRA, your 401(k) or other employersponsored retirement plan, and any education savings accounts you may have, such as a 529 plan.
Not all these choices will be suitable for your situation, of course. Before taking action on these items, you may want to consult with your tax and financial advisors. But give these options some thought because they may prove helpful in keeping your financial goals from going “over a cliff.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Still, there’s no need for panic. Despite its political infighting, Congress is likely to reduce the “cliff” to a smaller bump, though it probably won’t happen until after the election. But as an investor, you may need to be prepared for two significant events: market volatility, at least in the short term, and higher taxes, probably for the foreseeable future.
It’s more than just plumbing. Safety. Security. Comfort.

First of all, you need to understand what led to the Fed's remarks. Here’s the story: Some $1.2 trillion in spending cuts are scheduled to begin in 2013 while, simultaneously, the Bush-era tax cuts — including the reduction in capital gains and dividend taxes — are set to expire. Cindy Rose This combination of spending cuts and higher taxes could take some $600 billion out of the economy, leading to a possible recession — and maybe something much worse, at least in the eyes of the Fed.
Consider municipal bonds. If you’re in one of the upper tax brackets, you may benefit from investing in “munis,” which pay interest that’s free of federal taxes, and possibly state and local taxes as well.

As an investor, you can sometimes still feel you’re at the mercy of forces beyond your control. This may be especially true today, when the Federal Reserve has warned of an approaching “fiscal cliff.” What can you do in the face of such a dire prediction?
Consider converting your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. A Roth IRA provides tax-free earnings, provided you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account for at least five years. (Be aware, though, that this conversion is taxable and may not be appropriate if you don’t have money readily available to pay the taxes.)

¥ On Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key pens a poem, which is later set to the music of a popular English drinking tune called “To Anacreon in Heaven.” In 1931 the song becomes America’s national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” ¥ On Sept. 10, 1897, a 25-year-old London taxi driver named George Smith becomes the first person ever arrested for drunk driving. A true breath test didn’t come along until 1931 with a device called the Drunkometer. It involved a blow-up balloon and a tube filled with a purple fluid (potassium permanganate and sulfuric acid). Alcohol on a person’s breath changed the color of the fluid from purple to yellow; the quicker the change, the drunker the person. ¥ On Sept. 14, 1927, dancer Isadora Duncan is strangled in Nice, France, when the enormous silk scarf she is wearing gets tangled in the rear hubcaps of her open car. The scarf wound around the axle, tightening around Duncan’s neck and dragging her from the car. ¥ On Sept. 16, 1940, the first peacetime draft in the history of the United States is imposed. Registration of men between the ages of 21 and 36 began exactly one month later. There were some 20 million eligible young men -- 50 percent were rejected in the first year for health reasons or illiteracy. ¥ On Sept. 12, 1953, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy, the future 35th president of the United States, marries Jacqueline Bouvier in Newport, R.I. Seven years later, the couple would become the youngest president and first lady in American history. ¥ On Sept. 15, 1978, boxer Muhammad Ali defeats Leon Spinks at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans to win the world heavyweight boxing title for the third time in his career, the first fighter ever to do so. Ali left the sport permanently in 1981. ¥ On Sept. 11, 1985, Cincinnati Reds player-manager Pete Rose gets the 4,192nd hit of his career, breaking Ty Cobb’s major league record for career hits. Rose was a folk hero in Cincinnati, a homegrown talent known as “Charlie Hustle” for his relentless work ethic. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Laugh Lines! The Lone Ranger and Tonto
The Lone Ranger and Tonto went camping in the desert. After they got their tent all set up, both men fell sound asleep. Some hours later, Tonto wakes the Lone Ranger and says, 'Kemo Sabe, look towards sky, what you see? '

'What that tell you?' asked Tonto. The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, 'Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Tonto?' 'You dumber than buffalo. It means someone stole the tent.'
