TIDBITS® INDULGES IN SOME

PIZZA

by Kathy Wolfe

October is National Pizza Month! If you’ve eaten pizza in the past month, you’re part of the 93% of Americans who have done that same thing. In fact, across the nation, about 350 slices are consumed every second, equivalent to about 100 acres of pizza each day. If you’re an average citizen, you’ll eat about 46 slices, equal to 23 lbs. (10.4 kg) every year. Pizza sales generate about $30 billion annually.

ISSUE 893 • October 13, 2014

• It should be no surprise that pepperoni is the nation’s favorite topping, featured on about 36% of all pizzas ordered. That adds up to approximately 251,770,000 lbs. (114,200,951 kg) of this meat every year. Our least favorite topping is anchovies. About 61% of the population likes thin crust best and 14% prefer thick crust. The remainder like very thin crust the best. • There are more than 61,000 pizzerias in the United States. Over 9,000 of those are in New York. About 17% of the restaurants in America are pizzerias.

PIZZA (continued): • Tomato sauce base didn’t come about until the late 1600s. Until that time Europeans were suspicious of tomatoes, believing them to be poisonous. Once they overcame that fear, tomatoes became the base for pizzas. • Antica Pizzeria is the first known pizzeria, which opened in Naples, Italy in 1738. In 1830, the Port’Alba restaurant opened in Naples, baking their pies in an oven lined with lava from nearby volcano Mount Vesuvius. America’s first pizzeria was opened by Gennaro Lombardi in 1897 in New York City, and is still in operation just down the street from its original location. • To the Italians, there are two main types of pizza, the Marinara and the Margherita. Marinara pizza is topped with tomato, oregano, garlic, and olive oil, while the Margherita has a topping of tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and fresh basil. • Super Bowl Sunday is the highest pizza sales day of the year. Domino’s Pizza alone sells more than 110 million pizza slices on that day, about 80% more than a normal Sunday. Super Bowl Sunday is followed by New Year’s Eve, Halloween, Thanksgiving Eve, and New Year’s Day. But even with all the pizzas sold on those days, pizza still takes second place in the takeout department for the over-50 crowd, edged out by chicken. • In 1958, two brothers from Kansas borrowed $600 from their mother to start up a pizza restaurant in a 600-square-foot building in Kansas. Frank and Dan Carney opened up the first Pizza Hut near Wichita State University, and just one year later, had their first franchise restaurant in neighboring Topeka. Within 10 years, there were 300 Pizza Huts across the nation. Today there are approximately 12,000 Huts in over 90 countries around the world. In America, this chain is the largest user of cheese, purchasing more than 3% of the country’s supply, an amount that requires 170,000 dairy cows to produce. • Pizza Hut’s first ad back in 1965 featured the slogan “Putt Putt to the Pizza Hut.” A man in a business suit driving his 1965 Mustang was the star of the ad. Over the years Donald and Ivana Trump, Ringo Starr, The Monkees, and even former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev have appeared in Pizza Hut advertisements. • Pizza Hut may be the largest pizza chain with the most restaurants, but it’s not the leader in delivery. That honor belongs to Domino’s, who has nearly 11,000 stores in more than 70 countries, delivering more than million pizzas every day. Domino’s started out with one store in 1960, when Tom Monaghan and his brother James borrowed $900 to buy DomiNick’s, a pizzeria in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The following year, James traded his half of the company for a Volkswagen Beetle. In 1965, Tom renamed his store Domino’s Pizza. By 1978, there were 200 restaurants. In 1983, the company opened not only its 1,000th store, but its first international outlet as well, in Winnipeg, Canada. • Less than half of Domino’s pizzerias are located in the U.S., about 5,000 out of 11,000. The U.K. is home to 774, India has 715, Mexico totals 592, and Canada has 380. • Now estimated as the third largest pizza company, Little Caesars Pizza got its start in Garden City, Michigan in 1959. After Detroit Tigers’ shortstop Mike Illitch was injured, he and his wife Marian went into the pizza business. Mike wanted to name the restaurant Pizza Treat, Continued on page 5

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Holiday Cheer & Stressing Out The holiday season can cause your cat to become stressed, act in a very abnormal fashion, eat odd foods and hide to avoid conflict. From Labor Day to New Years there are human functions/parties, shopping, travel and a lot of commotion happening all the time. Cats like routine, they like to control their environment and they want to feel safe.

4556 Castleton Court, Castle Rock, CO 80109 (303)751-5772 * www.DDFL.ORG

Stress in all species creates abnormal behavior, illness and loss of control of life’s duties. Stressed cats lose their coping mechanisms and will exhibit avoidance, vocalization, and if the cat is cornered/trapped an aggressive response will ensue. The traditional “fight/ flight reaction” is the result. Long term negative effects of stress are sleeping more/hiding, decreased appetite, and very abnormal interaction with people. The immune system when stressed will become depressed and clinical diseases emerge.

Cats may need help if they cannot cope with their or your stress. Be observant to change and let your cat be in a safe place (safe haven) while the activities are occurring. Medical intervention may be necessary if the changes causing the stress are not resolved. Pheromone collars and anti-anxiety medications are used short term to allow the cat to relax in some situations. Try to plan ahead to head off potential problems:

If a visitor brings a new dog or cat into the household short term, this will create a stress. Consider new adult humans or children visiting, this will create stress. Consider boarding your cat if your cat does well in a boarding situation until parties have ended. During times of stress have your family enjoy the holidays and chill out! Your cats take cues from their family – your stress becomes their stress.

• Available pizza toppings in North America vary according to geographical area, and in some parts of the country, regional favorites are Cajun shrimp, oysters, crayfish, tuna, venison, duck, eggplant, and artichoke hearts. The majority of the population still favors meat toppings (62%), while the remaining 38% prefer vegetarian ingredients. International toppings include Japan’s favorite squid, eel, bacon, and potato pizza. In India, folks prefer pickled ginger, mutton, and tofu, while a fish pizza is the Russian’s choice, a combination of sardines, tuna, mackerel, herring, and salmon. In the Netherlands, if you order up a Double Dutch, you’ll receive double cheese, double onions, and double beef. • Canada has its own unique taste in pizza. The Poutine has toppings of cheese curds, French fries, gravy, and shaved beef. Also gaining popularity there is the hot dog stuffed crust pizza, which features an Angus beef hot dog cooked inside the stuffed crust.

• What about pizza’s caloric content? A pepperoni personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut is about 625 calories, while one slice of that company’s Supreme pan pizza is 440 calories. FAMOUS CANADIANS:

JONI MITCHELL

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, she was one of the leading folk performers, racking up Grammy after Grammy. Let’s examine the facts on the talented Canadian native, Joni Mitchell. • We know her as Joni Mitchell, but she was born Roberta Joan Anderson. Her father, a Royal Canadian Air Force flight lieutenant, was stationed in Fort Macleod, Alberta, during World War II, instructing pilots, and it was here that Roberta was born in 1943. • As a child, Joni developed an interest in classical piano when several of her friends were taking music lessons, and she developed a love for Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Beethoven, and Debussy. She herself began piano lessons at age 6. But when she was 8, calamity struck in the form of polio. It was 1951, before Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was in use, and an epidemic swept through the area. Joni was bedridden for weeks, and during her confinement, she became interested in singing, frequently practicing on her fellow patients. • Physical weakness following her recovery forced Joni to leave behind any athletic interests she may have had, causing her to fully pursue the arts. Singing, poetry, and painting became her loves. As a teen, she began singing in small nightclubs in western Canada, as well as adding songwriting to her list of accomplishments. Her playing and songwriting took on a different sound due to a weakness in her left hand as a result of the polio. This made it impossible for her to play certain chords, so she created a different sound with alternative chords she could manage, chords that Mitchell herself calls “Joni’s weird chords.”

Location is everything Tulips, daffodils, hyacinth and crocus are nature's wake-up call after the long winter. Even though more snow may fall, their bright colors reassure us that spring is just around the corner. So when you look for a place to plant bulbs, pick a spot that will showcase the flowers to best advantage for you, the neighbors and passersby. Also select a location that is well drained and gets plenty of sun. What should you plant? Design, placement and timing are the guiding factors. · Design your bulb garden with colors that mix well with one another and with other spring blooming perennials and trees in your yard. · Place bulbs for impact by grouping them in pockets of at least 7 bulbs rather than spacing the in a line. Groups of 10-12 are better still.

· You can plant bulbs one bulb and one hole at a time with a bulb-planting tool or small spade. But it will save you time to dig one hole or a wide trench to create the grouping. Dig the hole, space the bulbs and fill it in with no special tools required. · Group bulbs based on their bloom time. Daffodils and crocus are early bloomers and tulips can have 3 different bloom times depending on variety. Planting bulbs As with all plants, the most important step is to give bulbs a good start and then let Mother Nature take over. · Plant bulbs as soon as possible after you buy them. · Rule of thumb is to plant a bulb 3 times deeper than its height - and space it about twice its width from other bulbs. · Place the pointed end of the bulb up. If the bulb is too round to tell the top from the bottom, place the bulb sideways. The bulb will automatically send shoots up and roots down. · Take care not to compact the soil underneath the bulb so that the roots can spread out easily. · Fertilizer is key. Select a variety high in phosphorous - a super phosphate. It is better than bone meal. · If you plant hyacinths, be sure NOT to touch them with bare hands as bulbs can cause a rash. · Include edibles among the mix. Garlic and saffron crocus can both be planted in the fall. Tuck in bulbs after planting Bulbs in wood mulch beds will do better than beds with no mulch or with rock mulch. After planting, spread an even layer of shredded mulch over the top. Have wildlife issues? · Voles are a common landscape pest and active foragers during the winter. If voles have been in your yard, apply 2 inches or more of pea gravel over the bulb bed as a deterrent. The sharp edges of the gravel hurt the pads of their feet which will keeps them from digging. · To discourage elk, deer and rabbits, treat the bulbs before planting with a hot pepper treatment available at garden centers. You can also place a small wire cage of chicken wire over the top of the bed. Make sure the sides are bent and go into the ground.

Video Security Systems They’re more affordable than you think.

· In the spring when rabbits chew on emerging, tender shoots, placing a goose decoy in the yard can be a deterrent. Other preventives include applying blood meal or a predator urine spray around the plants. It will need to be reapplied after snow or rain.

Protect Your Little “Monsters” teeth from Harm This Halloween

© 2009 07497 — Rev. 2/09

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver

Q. What can I do keep all that sugary Halloween candy from turning my child’s mouth into a “nightmare”…..and a big dental bill?

• It was American author and critic H.L. Mencken who made the following sage observation: “Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag and begin slitting throats.”

Cindy Rose

A. Relax! Your child can have Halloween fun without harming their teeth. According to the

• The condor is the largest flying land bird in the Western Hemisphere -- and one of the slowest in reproducing. The female lays only one egg every two years.

Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), more than 90 percent of children will go trick or treating this year, and return home with bags full of candy. (Let’s face it: Most households don’t give out the “good stuff ”, do they? Just a few preventive steps can make a big difference: 1.

Chew Sugar-Free Gum, especially the kind that have the sweetners Sorbitol and Xylitol actually help prevent cavities. Not only is this a smart choice to drop into those little monsters’ Halloween bags, parents can also give it to their child to help neutralize the sugary-snack effects after eating. These special sweetners are effective in combating the bacteria and their harmful acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth.

2.

Chew just about anything: Chewing stimulates the flow of saliva, which cleanses the teeth.

3.

Rinse immediately after meals and snacks: Swishing and rinsing with water helps wash out stuck food particles and helps neutralize harmful decay acids. BUT……..if you wait 20-30 minutes to rinse, it’s too late. The acids are only strong enough to attack in the first 20 minutes after a meal or snack.

4.

Avoid the sticky stuff : Even some healthy foods, such as “sticky” fruits and nuts can lodge in the in-between areas and in pits and grooves of the teeth. (Raisins are really bad with a double whammy – they’re loaded with sugar AND very, very sticky!)

5.

Avoid Soda and other sugary and acidy drinks. Both “regular” and “diet” sodas can harm the teeth. The sugar in the “regular” and the high-acid chemistry of both attack enamel. Also, reduce the “frequency” of exposure. It’s better to “chug-a-lug” the entire can, than to “sip” small amounts over a period of time, since with each exposure the acid attacks the tooth for 20-30 minutes.

• Those who study such things claim that Napoleon Bonaparte was afraid of cats. • Confectioner Milton Hershey suffered through founding two candy companies that ended in failure, then succeeded on his third attempt, and finally sold that company and used the proceeds to found the Hershey Company. After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others. In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company. • Don’t consider yourself uneducated if you’ve never heard of anthropodermic bibliopegy; the practice of binding books with human skin is not (one can hope) common in modern times. • Scotsman John Paul Jones is best known for his naval exploits for the nascent United States during the Revolutionary War, and for his infamous utterance, “We have not yet begun to fight!” Most people don’t realize, though, that he was born John Paul and only adopted the surname “Jones” on his first trip to America, where he came to flee charges in the deaths of two sailors under his command. *** Thought for the Day: “Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.” -- Albert Einstein (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky PHOTO: Alyssa Milano Q: I really like the new series on Hallmark called “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” Can you tell me when I can see a new season? -- Adele T., Clyde, Ohio A: The comedic drama, which follows Cindy Rose a group of postal workers who transform themselves into an untraditional team of detectives to track down intended recipients of undeliverable mail, is moving to Hallmark’s sister channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. The show from “Touched by an Angel” executive producer Martha Williamson also is changing its format: It will return to TV as a movie franchise consisting of a series of two-hour original films. Debuting on Nov. 23 at 9/8c, “Signed, Sealed, Delivered for Christmas” will be the first movie in the franchise, with three more slated for 2015. Returning as the “POstables” crew are Oliver O’Toole (Eric Mabius, “Ugly Betty”), Shane McInerney (Kristin Booth, “Orphan Black”), Rita Haywith (Crystal Lowe, “Smallville”) and Norman Dorman (Geoff Gustafson “Primeval: New World”). According to Michelle Vicary, executive vice president of programming at Crown Media Family Networks, “At their core, the narratives on ‘Signed, Sealed, Delivered’ revolve around mystery and suspense, with compelling characters and dramatic storylines that will be enhanced by an extended format.” *** Q: I was happy to hear that “Mistresses” has been renewed for a third season, but sad to hear that Alyssa Milano won’t return. Why did she leave the show? -Eric G., via email A: Alyssa -- who recently gave birth to daughter Elizabeth Dylan, who joins big brother Milo Thomas -- said in a recent statement: “After two wonderful seasons in Los Angeles, the studio has decided to shoot season three of ‘Mistresses’ in Vancouver, Canada, for financial reasons. It’s with a heavy heart that I have decided that I can’t relocate. I have two babies under 4. Being a mother and wife comes first, and I just cannot uproot my children and separate the family by moving away. I will miss this job desperately and wish everyone the absolute best.” *** Q: I need some “White Collar” news! -- Patrick D., via email A: I have some good news for you, Patrick. The USA network’s police drama, which was slated to return for its sixth and final season in early 2015, will be premiering Nov. 6 instead. So you can enjoy these last six episodes a little bit sooner than expected, and also begin the withdrawal/grieving process a little earlier as well. At least we’ll always have the DVDs: As of Nov. 4, seasons one through five will be available for purchase at all major DVD and entertainment outlets. *** Q: Can you tell me if the following shows will be returning this season: “Trophy Wife,” “Dads” and “Raising Hope”? -- Rachel R., via Facebook A: I am sorry to report that all three shows have been canceled. However, you can catch “Raising Hope” star Garret Dillahunt on Amazon’s pilot “Hand of God” with Ron Perlman and Dana Delany, if that’s any consolation. The Gem Advisor Fire Opal

Scott McQueen Perhaps the most remarkable thing about fire opals is the size of the raw stones. Some are as large as a baseball, which increases the variety of ways they can be utilized. Their color is also distinctive. Fire opals have a warm, expressive orange color that varies from yellow to light red, and from time to time, a slight tinge of brown. They can also have a flashy play of color, something typical of opals. The price of a fire opal is determined by three factors: the play of color, the body color and the level of transparency. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body color, the more valuable it will be. Mexico provides gem collectors with the highest valued fire opals; they yield up intense red-orange fire opals that have a robust play of color. So popular is the fire opal in Mexico that it has become their national gemstone. Fire opals are said to appeal to people who are active and who bear a positive approach to life. Perhaps it is their fiery color that helps their owners experience the beauty of life and discover joyfulness in daily living. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. HOLLYWOOD -- Robert Downey Jr., currently in “The Judge” with Robert Duvall, keeps postponing the start of “Sherlock Holmes 3.” Director Guy Ritchie has signed Rachel McAdams and Jude Law to return, but Downey, who just finished shooting “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” as “Iron Man,” has been trying to woo Jack Nicholson out of retirement for “Sherlock Holmes 3”. But Jack is sticking to his vow, “I only want to do films that move people ... films about emotions and people.” A mutual friend told me, “Jack turned 77 in April and has cut down on partying and going out. We’ve been trying to get that Nicholson spark back, but so far he’s resisted. Jack doesn’t feel right about chasing women anymore.” In fact, it was revealed in Vanity Fair magazine that he feels, “There were points in my life when I felt oddly irresistible to women. I’m not in that state now, which makes me sad.” He added, “Now I don’t have any hair below my sock line, and that means you’re getting old, Jackie boy. It comes out of my ears instead. I mean, how many times have I slashed my earlobes?” Optimistically he revealed, “I would love that one last romance, a real romance. I’m not very realistic about it happening, but I can’t deny my yearning.” All we can do is hope he finds a new challenge such as “Sherlock Holmes 3” or any film ... we miss you Jack! *** A reader wanted to know whatever happened to Karen Lynn Gorney, who played Tara Martin in “All My Children” and Stephanie to John Travolta’s Tony Manero in “Saturday Night Fever”? Thirtyseven years later, Karen admits, “I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll always be associated with Stephanie and ‘Saturday Night Fever.’ After she moved on from the whirlwind the film caused, she became a painter, managed a Manhattan art gallery, returned to “All My Children” on a recurring basis in the 1990s and did guest appearances on TV series. Today Karen lives in upstate New York with her husband of 19 years, musician Mark Toback. I became friends with Karen when she and Richard Hatch (later Captain Apollo on “Battlestar Galactica” in 1978) were a supercouple on AMC. Today she’s writing, performing and recording her own music (she’s released three CDs). For more info, contact her at karenlynngorney.com *** If you loved the 1965 film “Dr. Zhivago,” which starred Omar Sharif and Julie Christie, then you’ll be happy to know the musical version will follow “Cinderella” into The Broadway Theatre in April. As if New York isn’t cold enough in April, they have to recreate a Siberian winter! (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Open Enrollment: A Great Time to Review Your Retirement Plan

If you work for a medium-tolarge company, you may now be entering the “open enrollment” period — that time of year when you get to make changes to your employee benefits. Your benefit package can be a big piece of your overall financial picture, Cindy Rose so you’ll want to make the right moves — especially in regard to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Take a close look at your 401(k) or similar plan, such as a 403(b), if you work for a school or a nonprofit group, or a 457(b), if you work for a state or local government. And keep these possible moves in mind: Boost your contributions. If your salary has gone up over the past year, or if you just think you have a reasonable “cushion” in your disposable income, boost your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Even if you can’t afford to contribute the maximum amount — which, in 2014, is $17,500, or $23,000 if you’re 50 or older — to your 401(k) or similar plan, try to put in as much as you can afford. Remember the key benefits of these plans: Your money can grow tax deferred and your contributions can lower your annual taxable income. (Keep in mind, though, that you will eventually be taxed on your withdrawals, and any withdrawals you take before you reach 59½ may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) Don’t miss the match. Try to take full advantage of your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. Your employer may match 50% of employee contributions, up to the first 6% of your salary. So if you’re only deferring 3% of your income, you are missing half the match — or leaving money “on the table,” so to speak. Rebalance, if necessary. You may be able to change the investment mix of your employer-sponsored retirement plan throughout the year, but you might find that the best time to review your holdings and rebalance your portfolio is during open enrollment, when you’re reviewing all your benefit options. Try to determine if your investment allocation is still appropriate for your needs or if you own some investments that are chronically underperforming. And always keep in mind the need to diversify. Try to spread your money around a variety of investments within your plan, with the exact percentages of each investment depending on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. As you near retirement, you may need to lower your overall risk level, but even at this stage of your career, you’ll benefit from a diversified portfolio. While diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it can help reduce the impact of volatility on your holdings. Review your beneficiary designations. Your retirement plan’s beneficiary designations are important and, in fact, can even supersede the wishes you express in your will. So if you experience changes in your life — marriage, remarriage, a birth or an adoption, etc. — you’ll need to update the beneficiary designations on your 401(k) or similar plan. It won’t take much time today — and it can help prevent a lot of trouble tomorrow. You work hard for the money that goes into your retirement plan —so make sure your plan is working hard for you.
