OCTOBER CELEBRATIONS

by Kathy Wolfe There is something for just about everyone during the month of October. Take a look at several things to celebrate this month.

• October was officially declared National Popcorn Poppin’ Month in 1999 by then-Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman. Popcorn is a member of the maize family along with five other types of corn – pod, sweet, flour, dent, and flint. However, only popcorn pops. A kernel has the potential to pop up to 3 feet (.9 meter) in the air. A cup of air-popped popcorn is definitely your best choice – this snack has just 31 calories, compared to 55 calories for popcorn popped in oil. Lightly butter that cup of popcorn and the count zooms up to 133 calories. • Undomesticated feral hogs have made such a name for themselves that October has been proclaimed Feral Hog Month, also called Hog Out Month. Feral hogs are much meaner than farmyard hogs and are well-adapted to living in the wild. These tusked pests destroy millions of dollars of property, livestock, and crops and are also carriers of cholera, tuberculosis, salmonella, and anthrax. There are more than 500,000 wild hogs in Florida, and a staggering 2.6 million in the state of Texas. Many states sponsor a campaign each October to eliminate as many as possible. turn the page for more!

OCTOBER CELEBRATIONS (continued): • Since there are more than 1,200 species of bats, perhaps they deserve some recognition. October is Bat Appreciation Month, honoring this group that comprises one-fifth of all mammals. Although to many, bats seem scary and creepy, they are vital to the ecosystem in controlling pests and participating in pollination. The bumblebee bat, the world’s smallest mammal, weighs less than a penny, while the largest bat has a six-foot (1.8-m) wingspan. Most bats feed on insects, with the average brown bat consuming up to 1,000 bugs in one hour. A very small percentage dine on fish, mice, and frogs. Out of the 1,200 species, just three are vampires, and all three are native only to Latin America. Although these blood drinkers are perceived as frightful, their saliva contains an enzyme that dissolves blood clots, beneficial in treating human stroke victims. Many people associate bats with rabies, but in the U.S., an average of only two people die per year from rabies from a bat. • It’s estimated that more than 20 million Americans are philatelists, that is, they collect stamps! Because it’s one of the world’s most popular hobbies, October is National Stamp Collecting Month. It’s unlikely there are many collectors who own any of the first two U.S. stamps ever printed, stamps featuring Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, in 1847. However, there were 120 million copies made of the most popular stamp, a 1993 stamp of Elvis Presley. Famous folks who have enjoyed this hobby include Franklin Roosevelt, Warren Buffet, James Earl Jones, James Michener, and John Lennon. • In 1983, President Ronald Reagan declared October as National Roller Skating Month. Although the first known roller skates were invented in the 1760s with a single line of wheels, James Plimpton is considered the “father of modern roller skating” due to his 1863 invention of a four-wheel skate. In 1935, a Chicago restaurant owner devised a scheme for a roller derby marathon. Fifty skaters teamed up in 25 male/female teams and took their starting positions in front of 20,000 fans at the Chicago Coliseum. They were prepared for a 3,000-mile (4,828-km) jaunt around the track, the distance equivalent between San Diego and New York City. The marathon began on August 13 and wrapped up on September 22, with just nine teams finishing. Roller derbies became a craze, and before long, 50 major cities were hosting them before five million spectators. When World War II began, the majority of the skaters Continued on page 7

Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc

Holiday Cheer & Stressing Out The holiday season can cause your cat to become stressed, act in a very abnormal fashion, eat odd foods and hide to avoid conflict. From Labor Day to New Years there are human functions/parties, shopping, travel and a lot of commotion happening all the time. Cats like routine, they like to control their environment and they want to feel safe. Stress in all species creates abnormal behavior, illness and loss of control of life’s duties. Stressed cats lose their coping mechanisms and will exhibit avoidance, vocalization, and if the cat is cornered/ trapped an aggressive response will ensue. The traditional “fight/flight reaction” is the result. Long term negative effects of stress are sleeping more/ hiding, decreased appetite, and very abnormal interaction with people. The immune system when stressed will become depressed and clinical diseases emerge. Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, urine marking, hissing, showing reclusiveness, excessive grooming may be the first signs of stress – something has changed and your cat is having a problem dealing with it. Hiding or getting into the “meatloaf” posture (sternal recumbency, with legs tucked underbody) is commonly seen.

Cats may need help if they cannot cope with their or your stress. Be observant to change and let your cat be in a safe place (safe haven) while the activities are occurring. Medical intervention may be necessary if the changes causing the stress are not resolved. Pheromone collars and anti-anxiety medications are used short term to allow the cat to relax in some situations. Try to plan ahead to head off potential problems: • •

If a visitor brings a new dog or cat into the household short term, this will create a stress. Consider new adult humans or children visiting, this will create stress. Consider boarding your cat if your cat does well in a boarding situation until parties have ended. During times of stress have your family enjoy the holidays and chill out! Your cats take cues from their family – your stress becomes their stress.

Chances are pretty good that anyone who has resided in Colorado for any length of time knows what a “14er” is and where to find one. Most Coloradoans know that a 14er is a mountain that exceeds 14,000 feet above mean sea level, and that Colorado boasts the most of these mountains (54 to be exact), more than any other state. But this year, I’d like to challenge your way of thinking. This month on Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th, the ladies representing the Women’s Ministry at South Suburban Christian Church will be “14ers” as they sponsor the 14th year of the annual fall event CreativiTea. From humble beginnings as an outlet to share God-given artistic talents, CreativiTea has become an incredible yearly event featuring an art show, holiday crafts, bake sale, tea cafe and more than 80 local artisans. Spotlighting both new and returning favorites, all artisans offer original art, handmade crafts, and the perfect chance to pick up some unique and wonderful holiday gifts. Excited for the opportunity to welcome both the community and their church family, the ladies invite you to come and visit their version of a Colorado 14er this year and help them climb to new heights! They are also blessed, on behalf of Women’s Ministries at SSCC, to share 10% of all receipts to numerous services and outreach programs both within the church and community. CreativiTea offers free admission and will be held Friday, October 26th from 9am–5pm and Saturday, October 27th from 9am–4pm. South Suburban Christian Church is located at 7275 S. Broadway in Littleton, just north of Dry Creek. Bring a friend to join you for a cup of tea, a sweet treat, and enjoy some early Christmas shopping! Scott McQueen WARNING: Don’t confuse natural zircon with cubic zirconia, the laboratory-grown diamond imitation. It is actually a famous gem of many colors, known for centuries for its luster and fire. The uninformed may look upon it as a cheap diamond because for years the most popular zircon was of the colorless variety, appearing at first glance to be a diamond. Today the most popular color is blue zircon, often used as an alternative birthstone for December. Zircon is also available in green, dark red, yellow, brown, and orange. In the middle ages some believed that zircon relieved pain, prevented nightmares, ensured a deep and tranquil sleep, and brought wisdom, honor and riches to the wearer. If your zircon stone loses its luster, some believe it is a warning of danger. Some zircons do lose their luster, but it is because of over exposure to the sun and the luster can be recalled by a special heat treatment. Dryer Fires Tied to Lint Buildup

We service all major household appliances.

Q: My roommate says that we need to clean the lint filter on the dryer after every cycle, while I think it should be cleaned only when it’s full. Can you settle the argument? -- Flo in Harrisburg, Pa. A: This one is pretty easy to settle. Clean the lint filter after every cycle. Why? Because a buildup of lint in the dryer -- even just in the lint filter -- can become a fire hazard. Dryer lint is alarmingly combustible and causes some 15,000 laundry-room fires each year. Even though the lint filter screen traps a good deal of lint from clothing, some lint particles still pass through the screen and out of the dryer vent. Over time, these particles accumulate in corners and bends along the path that the dryer’s exhaust takes. So it’s not unusual to find lint buildup in places like the junction of the exhaust outlet and the hose attachment, or in the bends and folds of a longer piece of flexible vent hose. So in addition to cleaning out the filter after every load, you should clean behind the dryer and clean the vent connections all the way out to the outside vent at least twice a year. To do this, unplug the dryer and, with a helper, carefully slide it out away from the wall, enough so that you can reach behind it. You may need to shift the washing machine as well, if the units are located in a tight space (and it seems like they always are). Purchase a lint brush at your home-improvement store. This can be used to clear built-up lint from the area beneath the lint filter, something you can do more frequently if this seems to be a problem. Clean the vents and hose by detaching the vent hose from the back of the dryer. Use the lint brush and if possible a shop vacuum to clear lint from the vent and the hose. Carefully brush or vacuum out the vent hose. Then, clean the exterior vent -- from the outside in, if need be. Make sure to reconnect the hose securely to the vents on either side. A final tip: If the exhaust hose or pipe is made of white vinyl, replace this material as soon as possible with flexible metal pipe. Vinyl in particular is no longer permitted for dryer exhaust in building codes. HOME TIP: Wash your dryer’s lint filter in warm soapy water every few months to clear built-up fabric softener from the screen. OCTOBER CELEBRATIONS (continued):

• The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was founded on October 16, 1945, and to commemorate the date, World Food Day is now celebrated every year on that day. It’s a worldwide event that aims to increase the public’s awareness of world hunger. National Food Bank Week is observed October 14-20 in correspondence with World Food Day, with all citizens urged to contribute to their local food banks. • Nothing is more devastating than the death of an infant, and many organizations have been formed to educate parents and caregivers on how to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. October is National SIDS Awareness Month, a time to learn more about the leading cause of death in children between the ages of one month and one year. About 2,500 SIDS deaths occur per year in the United States. Research indicates that African-American babies are more than twice as likely to die of SIDS than Caucasian babies, while American Indian and Alaska Native babies are nearly three times as likely. Studies show that infants who sleep on their stomach have a much higher risk, as do those whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. An elevated body temperature contributes to the danger, as does sleeping on a soft mattress. Some scientists think that defects in an infant’s nervous system, where breathing and heart rate are regulated, contribute to the likelihood, as do less-developed brain stems, where respiratory functions are controlled. The good news is that since physicians began instructing parents to put babies to sleep on their backs around 1994, the number of SIDS deaths has declined by more than half.

enlisted and the fad died down. • It’s Spinach Lovers’ Month! This would be a good time to reap the health benefits of this iron- and nutrient-rich vegetable. This member of the goosefoot family (along with beets and Swiss chard) is a powerhouse of daily requirements, aiding in red blood cell production, bone strength, prevention of anemia, and slowing down damage to neurons in the brain. And because there are only seven calories in a cup of raw spinach, it’s also a great contribution to weight loss programs. Most of America’s spinach is grown in California and Texas. Crystal City, Texas makes the claim as the spinach capital of the world. In 1936, the community (present-day population 7,200) established its first annual spinach festival, and erected a statue of famous spinach consumer Popeye the Sailor Man across from City Hall the following year. Back in the 1930s, the Crystal City Cannery was producing 10,000 cans of spinach every day.

Ask the Dentist

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Why Is My Breath STINKY? …….. and What Can I Do About It? (Part 2)Do You Have Traveler’s Breath? Does a Smaller Waist cause Bad Breath? Q. What is Traveler’s Breath? A. Traveler’s Breath is bad breath that develops while traveling. Oftentimes while traveling, especially by plane, the salivary glands slow saliva production. This allows bacteria to grow inside the mouth, which leads to bad breath. Travelers usually have to alter their food intake while at the airport or on the plane. This usually means wolfing down a fast food and a soda, and ignoring after-meals good oral hygiene. Bacteria then break down small bits of food left in the mouth producing stinky sulfur compounds – “Traveler’s Breath”. Q. What if I just brush before getting on the plane, and not eat while traveling? A. Hunger or fasting from skipping meals can be a common habit of some frequent fliers. ,Dr. Nick Russo, DDS, FAGD, states that “Even if you have brushed your teeth , but have not eaten all day, “morning mouth” may reoccur during the day.”

Elizabeth United Methodists Invite you to:

Q. I’m on a low-carb diet, and my breath stinks. Why? A. As dieters shed pounds, they may be saying “goodbye” to carbs, but “hello” to halitosis. Low carb diets cause the body to burn stored fat, instead of carbohydrates. Chemicals called “ketones” are produced when the body burns it’s fat reserves. High protein foods can generate more sulfur breakdown products, especially on the back of the tongue. Food for thought: Does a smaller waist cause Stinky Breath?

SHOP ‘N ROLL Arts & Crafts Fair Saturday, October 20th, 2012 9am - 4pm

Q. So………..what can I do about my stinky breath? A. 1. Drink plenty of water to wash away bacteria and food particles. If you’re on a high protein diet, plenty of water can dilute the stinky ketones. 2. Chew sugarless gum, especially after meals. Chewing gum increases beneficial saliva production. Gums sweetened with Xylitol are especially beneficial, because of Xylitol’s cavity fighting benefits. 3. Chew Parsley. (Huh?) Parsley chewing increases saliva production. (Better get some at the super market, before people find out about this, and there’s a run on parsley! 4. Keep a toothbrush handy and brush after all meals.

Life insurance — If your employer offers free or inexpensive life insurance, you should almost certainly accept it. But if your situation has changed since you first received life insurance as an employee benefit — that is, if you’ve gotten married or had children or bought a house — you may well need to supplement your employer’s policy with outside insurance. Also, make sure the beneficiary designations on your employer’s policy are still correct. Disability insurance — Almost everyone recognizes the need for life insurance. But that’s not necessarily the case with disability insurance — which is unfortunate, because a worker’s chance of becoming disabled is 2 to 3.5 times greater than dying, according to A.M. ¥ On Oct. 30, 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition closes in Chicago. Fairgoers were offered a chance to see the first gas-powered motorcar, an alternating-current power plant, a 46-foot-long cannon, a 1,500-pound Venus de Milo made of chocolate, and Juicy Fruit gum. ¥ On Nov. 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other. Inside the final coffin, which was made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boyking Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years. ¥ On Nov. 3, 1930, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel between the United States and Canada is officially opened to auto traffic. Each end of the tunnel had a 100-foot-tall ventilation tower; each tower held 12 huge fans, six for pumping fresh air into the tunnel and six for exhaust. The tunnel’s ventilation system still works just as well today as it did 80 years ago. ¥ On Oct. 29, 1948, a killer smog continues to hover over Donora, Pa. The town’s steel mills and a zinc smelting plant had released excessive amounts of sulfuric acid, carbon monoxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Over a five-day period, the smog killed some 20 people and made thousands more seriously ill. ¥ On Oct. 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd becomes the first black man to play in an NBA game when he takes the court in the season opener for the Washington Capitols. The Capitols had picked him in the ninth round of the draft. After seven games with the Capitols, Lloyd was drafted into the military and sent to Korea for two years. ¥ On Nov. 1, 1967, “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman as a tough, anti-authoritarian, poker-playing prisoner, debuts in theaters. The film contained the now-famous line: “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” ¥ On Nov. 2, 1986, Norwegian distance runner Grete Waitz wins her eighth New York City marathon. She finished the 26-mile, 385-yard course in 2:28.6, more than a mile ahead of the second- and third-place women in the race.

s Tips: Panic: you’re hitting your irons fat and thin.

Skips Tips:

Quick fix: Keep your chin level as you swing What a puzzle: You hit a couple shots fat, then you start hitting them thin. Then back to fat. What gives? These shots appear to be at opposite ends of the spectrum, so how can they happen on consecutive swings? Truth is, fat and thin contact come from the same basic fault: The low point of the swing is behind the ball. What we usually see is, players dip the right shoulder on the downswing, which makes the head move down and away from the target. That shifts the bottom of the swing from behind the ball. The natural mis-hit is a fat shot, but hit a few of these, and most golfers instinctively pull up with their arms to avoid hitting it fat. That’s where the thin shot comes in. To avoid both, focus on keeping your head level, as if your chin were resting on a shelf at address and stayed there through impact. This tip is from Jim Mclean
