THE HISTORY OF PLASTICS
by T. A. Tafoya Through the years there have been many industrial developments, but no other industry has undergone the rapid growth of the plastics industry. Millions of dollars are spent yearly in plastics research to find new and improved plastics and to find ways to lower the cost of producing plastics. To quote Mr. McGuire from the 1967 movie “The Graduate,” “I want to say one word to you. Just one word. Plastics.” Make your way down this timeline to learn more about these amazing materials. • 1862: The world was introduced to plastic at the Great International Exhibition in London by British chemist Alexander Parkes. Parkes formulated a material he called Parkesine, which was derived from organic cellulose (part of the cell wall of green plants). Once heated, this substance could be molded, and it retained its shape when cooled. The product failed due to the high cost of production and its highly flammable nature. • 1869: A $10,000 prize was offered for the discovery of a new material to replace the use of ivory in the making of billiard balls. American printer John Wesley Hyatt entered the contest and discovered what he called “Celluloid.” Celluloid was synthesized from cotton fiber and the plant material camphor, and could be molded into desired shapes.

• One big drawback was the flammable nature of celluloid; the balls had a tendency to explode on contact. The plastic was used as a substitute for amber and tortoiseshell and was later used for film in photography and movies.

• 1907: Formaldehyde greatly advanced the technology of plastic. New York chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland improved phenolformaldehyde reaction techniques creating the first completely synthetic, man-made plastic tradenamed Bakelite. The mixture was highly heatresistant and extremely hard and could be added to most materials (even softwood) to make them more durable. In the ‘20s and ‘30s, manufacturers made Bakelite jewelry and clock and radio cases that were uniquely styled. Bakelite became a commercial success.

• 1920: Polyvinyl Chloride, or PVC, was developed to replace increasingly costly natural rubber. Approximately 75 percent of all PVC manufactured today is used in construction materials, as well as upholstery, clothing, piping, flexible hoses, tubing, flooring, roofing membranes, shower curtains and electrical cable insulation. PVC is useful because it resists fire and water.

• 1933: Polyethylene was discovered by accident by two chemists in Northwich, England. It proved to have excellent insulating properties and was used during World War II to insulate radar systems for airplanes. Today, polyethylene makes up the largest volume of plastic in the world with an annual production of approximately 80 million metric tons. It’s cheap, flexible, durable and chemically resistant. It is used in soda bottles, milk jugs, plastic bags and food storage containers.

PVDC was found to be resistant to oxygen, water, acids, bases and solvents and creates a barrier against oxygen, moisture, chemicals and heat. It was originally used to protect military equipment. The substance was sprayed on fighter planes to protect them against saltwater. After Dow discovered PVDC would cling to almost any surface, Saran Wrap was introduced to the public in 1953.

It is now used for mattresses, furniture padding and thermal insulation. Cat Q & A
What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care? Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths. Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

I have asked many friends, colleagues, and clients if they take vitamins and why? Most people have told me they do and for many good reasons. Vitamins and supplements appear to correct deficiencies in the body and enhance people’s well being. Next I began to look over feline diets and most diets were labeled balanced and complete for all life stages. The ingredients varied but most had a large percentage of carbohydrates as a food source. Cats in the wild eat very little carbohydrates – cats are meat eaters. The metabolism of felines differs dramatically from canines – cats are true carnivores and dogs are omnivores like humans. In clinical medicine we see many ‘mild’ deficiency syndromes improve when diets are changed or supplements are added. It is apparent that most diets other than mice and birds are deficient in many ways. Reviewing thousands of cat’s body scores and their diets we found most had some deficiencies. The old adage – “You are what you eat.” is more true for cats than for humans. There are many ‘new’ feline diseases that have come to the forefront in the last 30 years that appear to have some dietary basis: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, urinary tract disease, cancer, liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, etc.. Deficiency diseases are becoming one of the biggest areas of research. So, the bottom line with virtually all feline diets . . . they need to be supplemented with quality vitamins, minerals, and other essential fatty acids and proteins. The problem with most vitamin and supplement products is that they are not well formulated for cats and the quality is subpar. We have researched and searched for quality products and there appear to be only 3 to 4 out of thousands that meet balanced nutritional standards. Feeding quality supplements really does help your cat versus feeding ‘empty’ treats loaded with calories. Ask your veterinarian which supplements to add to your cat’s nutrition.

PLASTICS (continued): overnight. The gas dissipated, leaving a slippery, solid white powder. He found this powder to be impervious to acids, cold and heat. It was ideal for use in the lining of pots and pans to make them stick-free and is widely used in kitchenware today. • 1939: The first nylon stockings were introduced by DuPont labs at the New York World’s Fair in 19391940. During the 1940s, cheap synthetic polymers, such as nylon, acrylic, neoprene and polyethylene, began to replace the use of natural materials in many things. One example is nylon replacing animal hairs in toothbrushes. • 1948: ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, was first discovered during World War II as an alternative to rubber. ABS was patented in 1948 and introduced to commercial markets in 1954. It is a tough, lightweight plastic, resistant to heat and has the ability to be injection molded and extruded, which makes it useful in the manufacture of many different products like piping, musical instruments, golf club heads, car parts and some toys, including Legos. Even some tattoo inks use particles of ABS ground down to less than a micrometer in diameter to make the colors more vivid. • 1953: Chemist Dr. Daniel Fox of GE became one of the discoverers of the polycarbonate resin that was patented as Lexan. He found that once the gooey substance hardened, it could not be broken or destroyed without great effort. In 1968, the company began using sheets of Lexan in bus and train windows and to make bullet-resistant laminates. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin wore pressure helmets made of Lexan as they took the first steps on the moon. The material is also used in football helmets, traffic signal housing units, car headlights, fighter jet windshields, car dashboards, laptop housings, CDs, DVDs and cell phones. • 1954: Polystyrene foam, more commonly known as Styrofoam, was discovered in 1839. Dow Chemical introduced Styrofoam to the public in 1954. The material is used for packaging, as a building material and in toys and other household items. • 1965: DuPont scientist Stephanie Kwolek developed a way to spin fiber from liquid crystalline solutions. The resulting material was lightweight, flexible and five times as strong ounce for ounce as steel. This later became known as Kevlar and is used to make various military and police protection products including flak jackets, bulletproof vests and other protective wear. • 1979: Polar fleece is a soft, napped insulating synthetic fabric made from Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and other synthetic fibers. Polar Fleece was first created in 1979 by Malden Mills, now Polartec LLC. The goal was to develop a new, light, yet strong, pile fabric that could mimic, and in some ways surpass, wool. Fleece has some of wool’s finest qualities but weighs a fraction in comparison, is more lightweight than other polyester fabrics and doesn’t hold moisture.

Viking explorers were the first to use thin pieces of iolite as a polarizing filter that allowed them to determine the exact position of the sun and thereby navigate safely between their homeland and the New World. The property that made this possible was the extreme pleochroism (the property of certain crystals of exhibiting different colors when viewed from different directions under transmitted light) of iolite. This gem has a variety of colors visible in different directions in the crystal. A cube cut from iolite will look blue/sapphire from one side, crystal clear from the other, and a honey yellow from on top. The same property (pleochroism) that makes iolite useful as a tool for navigation creates problems for the cutter. Iolite must be cut from exactly the right direction or its colors will not be as brilliant. The name iolite comes from the Greek ‘ion’, which means violet. It is a purplish blue when cut properly and it has a softness that makes it very pleasing to the eye and increasingly popular for use in jewelry. The deeper the blue the more valuable the gemstone, but overall, iolite is quite affordable. The Vikings probably got their iolite from deposits in Norway and Greenland, however, today It is mined in India, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Brazil.

What is he doing now? -Sherry R., via e-mail A: Taylor Kitsch played Tim Riggins, Cindy Rose the troubled, womanizing former fullback/running back of the Dillon Panthers who turned himself in to police for running a chop shop with his brother, Billy. Since “FNL” ended, Taylor, 30, has been super busy. He stars in a handful of movies coming out soon and/or in production, including playing the title character in “John Carter”; Alex Hopper in “Battleship,” a feature-film adaption of the popular kids’ board game; and “Savages,” a crime drama directed by Oliver Stone. *** Q: I was really getting into “The Playboy Club” when it was suddenly dropped from the TV schedule. Is it on hiatus, or has it been canceled? -- George F., Harrisburg, Pa. A: It would seem that NBC’s much-ballyhooed crime drama couldn’t hold an audience’s attention as well as the Playboy Bunnies themselves could back in the time this show was set (1961). On Oct. 3, NBC aired the third and final episode of “The Playboy Club” (with two episodes going unaired), making it the first casualty of the fall 2011 TV season. Series creator Chad Hodge and Playboy Enterprises CCO Hugh Hefner are hoping to sell the series to Bravo, where it will air all five episodes and hopefully be called upon to make more. If you’re keeping score, NBC’s “Free Agents,” starring Hank Azaria, was canceled soon after “Playboy.” As of this writing, “Charlie’s Angels” has been panned by most critics and its ratings have not been up to par, making it a good bet to be the next show on the chopping block. *** Q: Can you tell me if two of my favorite comedies, IFC’s “Portlandia” and “The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret” with be back for new seasons? Please say yes! -- Jennifer G., via e-mail A: Yes, both show will be back for their respective second season on IFC this January. Regarding “Portlandia,” stars Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein and Jonathan Krisel will be back, along with a slew of new characters and notable guest stars. And “Todd Margaret” will feature the return of David Cross, Will Arnett (who will be pulling double-duty, since his NBC show “Up All Night” has been picked up for a full season), Sharon Horgan and Blake Harrison, with Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) making a guest-starring appearance. *** Q: “Drop Dead Diva” just finished up the season, and the ending gives the impression that it’s over. Will it be returning? -- Joan D., via e-mail A: Don’t you worry. Nancy Dubuc, president and general manager of Lifetime Networks, announced recently that “DDD” would be back for a 13-episode fourth season in summer 2012, stating: “’Drop Dead Diva’ is a signature series for Lifetime that continues to resonate with audiences with its heart and humor. We are thrilled to bring it back for another season.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. Forecolosure Part 3: Additional Options to Stop Foreclosure Short Sale Short Sale remains the most common method to avoid foreclosure. It is just like any other house sale except the lender is involved in approving any offer made on the property. The advantage of a short sale is that you avoid having the foreclosure on your credit report and might receive a waiver of any deficiency. Deed In Lieu of Foreclosure With a Deed In Lieu of Foreclosure (DIL) you essentially give your house back to the bank and you’ll be able to walk away. This sounds good at first, but there are some consequences to a DIL. It is reported virtually the same to the credit reporting agencies as a foreclosure. It will not be as damaging to your credit as a foreclosure, but will still have a negative impact. In the case you owe a second mortgage, most banks will not offer a DIL on the first mortgage until you negotiate a settlement with the second mortgage holder. Bankruptcy Bancruptcy can be used to delay the foreclosure process, but it won t stop foreclosure. Filing bankruptcy will put your foreclosure on hold during the bankruptcy process. Once your bankruptcy is discharged the foreclosure process will resume where it left off. If you are considering bankruptcy please contact an attorney who is familiar with the Colorado foreclosure process. Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Do Men and Women Invest Differently? Several years ago, a book titled Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus was quite popular. As the title suggests, the book argues that men and women are vastly different from each other, particularly Cindy Rose in their emotional needs and in the way they communicate. While not everyone agrees with the notion that men and women might as well be from different planets, most of us would probably concur that the two genders frequently behave differently — and this divergence in behavior may also show up in the way that we invest.

In fact, various studies and anecdotal evidence suggests these differences in the way that men and women invest: Men tend to trade more often than women. Men seem to buy and sell investments more frequently than women. This difference could result in an advantage for women investors. For one thing, if women do trade less, they may incur fewer commission charges, fees and other expenses, all of which can eat into investment returns. Also, by holding investments longer, women may be able to take better advantage of market rallies. During the 2008-2009 financial crisis, for example, men were more likely than women to sell shares of stock at market lows, which led to bigger losses among male traders — and fewer gains when some of the stock values began to rise again — according to a study by Vanguard, a mutual fund company. Men tend to invest more aggressively than women. Perhaps not surprisingly, men seem to be more willing to take risks with their investments. This trait can be both positive and negative. On the positive side, risk is associated with reward, so the more aggressive the investment, the greater the potential for growth. On the negative side, taking too much risk pretty much speaks for itself. Ideally, all investors — men and women — should stick with investments that fit their individual risk tolerance. Women are more likely to look at the “big picture.” Although both men and women investors want information, women seem to take a more “holistic” approach — that is, instead of focusing strictly on performance statistics, they tend to delve deeper into their investments’ background, competitive environment and other factors. This quest for additional knowledge may help explain why all-female investment clubs have achieved greater returns than all-male clubs, according to a study by the National Association of Investors Corp., which represents thousands of investment clubs across the country. Men may be more optimistic about the financial markets. Some studies show that men are more optimistic about key economic indicators and future stock market performance. Optimism can be a valuable asset when it comes to investing; if you have confidence in the future, you’re more likely to invest for it, and to continue investing. On the other hand, false optimism may lead to over-confidence, which can have negative results for investors. Neither men nor women have a monopoly on positive investment behaviors; each gender can probably learn something from the other. Ultimately, of course, it’s your decision-making, not your x- or y-chromosomes, that will determine your ability to make progress toward your long-term goals. So educate yourself about your choices, and get the help you need from a financial professional, as you invest through the years.

CreativiTea In Gen 14 we read about the time that Abraham took 318 of his own men and defeated an army made up of a 4 king military machine. And not only did they whip them but they stripped them of all their spoils. He brought back Lot and his family, all the goods, all the women, it was an overwhelming victory. And I believe it was the Spirit of God, the anointing of THE BLESSING that revealed to them strategies and tactics of war that no one had ever heard of before and that gave them this great victory. Abraham understood that THE BLESSING caused him to prosper financially because wherever he went, the area flourished and he became richer. He also knew after this great victory, that THE BLESSING empowered him to triumph over his foes and I am sure Lot was thankful for that! Every time someone tried to come against Abraham his covenant Word from God was enforced, “I will BLESS them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee” ( Gen 12:3)But something of even a greater magnitude happened after he returned from the slaughter of the kings. Genesis 14:18-20 (KJV)And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God. 19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth: 20And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all. Why was this so vital? Because through Melchizedek, God revealed to Abraham the life-changing revelation, the Good News, that THE BLESSING, had made him possessor of heaven and earth. God made it clear that he had become an heir of Adam’s BLESSING. He had been given dominion over everything; the Bible calls that revelation THE GOSPEL in Galatians chapter 3.Through Melchizedek, God was telling Abraham that God was giving him possession, not just of the land of Canaan, but of the whole world. I think most Christians have missed this right here, thinking it is referring to God as possessor of heaven and earth but it is not. He is referring to Abram of the Most High God as possessor. If you don’t believe me, just look at Romans 4:13, 13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Now, Melchizedek, met Abraham declaring those words over him as he ministered the bread and the wine to him, which of course represented the body and the blood of a covenant sacrifice. What makes Melchizedek an OT type of Jesus is the fact that he was anointed both to declare THE BLESSING, and to receive the tithe. Now, when you tithe, you bring it to your High Priest, (Jesus) and He confers THE BLESSING on you which enables you to succeed and become greater in every area of your life, Praise God!

Winter is Coming…is Your Car Ready? 1. Get the right kind of oil change. Colder temperatures sometimes like oil with different viscosity. It’ll help the oil flow upon start up as temperatures drop. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures. 2. Make sure you can see. Wiper blades are often forgotten about until you need them and then it’s too late. Don’t wait until you can’t see to replace them. They are cheap to replace and you’ll be grateful during the next storm. Also, check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clear. 3. Check your battery. This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. When was the last time you replaced your battery? If you can’t remember, have it checked by your local parts store. Most of them will do it free of charge and you’ll save yourself from being stranded with a weak or dead battery. 4. Examine your belts and hoses. When you have that full service done on your vehicle, make sure the belts and hoses get checked for wear and tear — even if you’re driving a modern car. Cold weather can do a number on belts and hoses so don’t assume they’re in good condition. 5. Check your tire pressure. Tire pressure plays a big role in traction…especially during wet, snowy or icy conditions. As the temperatures drop, so will your air pressure in your tires. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure and remember to check them on a regular basis. This will also ensure you’re getting maximum gas mileage.

AN ACTUAL CRAIG'S LIST PERSONALS AD To the Guy Who Tried to Mug Me in Downtown Savannah night before last. Date: 2010-09-27, 1:43 a.m. E.S.T. I was the guy wearing the black Burberry jacket that you demanded that I hand over, shortly after you pulled the knife on me and my girlfriend, threatening our lives. You also asked for my girlfriend's purse and earrings. I can only hope that you somehow come across this rather important message. First, I'd like to apologize for your embarrassment; I didn't expect you to actually crap in your pants when I drew my pistol after you took my jacket.. The evening was not that cold, and I was wearing the jacket for a reason.. my girlfriend was happy that I just returned safely from my 2nd tour as a Combat Marine in Afghanistan .. She had just bought me that Kimber Custom Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol for my birthday, and we had picked up a shoulder holster for it that very evening. Obviously you agree that it is a very intimidating weapon when pointed at your head ... isn't it?! I know it probably wasn't fun walking back to wherever you'd come from with crap in your pants. I'm sure it was even worse walking bare-footed since I made you leave your shoes, cell phone, and wallet with me. [That prevented you from calling or running to your buddies to come help mug us again].
I gave your shoes to a homeless guy outside Vinnie Van Go Go's, along with all the cash in your wallet. [That made his day!]
