• Dictionary Day is October 16, the birthday of Noah Webster. Webster, a 1778 graduate of Yale, began writing America’s first dictionary at age 43, wrapping up the job of 70,000 entries at age 70. He was responsible for changing some of the old English spellings, such as “colour” to “color” and “musick” to “music.” • The National Mole Day Foundation urges you to celebrate National Mole Day on October 23. Does that mean it’s time to be kind to those furry little fellows that wreak havoc on your lawn? Not at all! It’s a day to get excited about the mole, a basic measuring unit in chemistry, and to memorize Avogadro’s number, 6.024 x 10 to the 23rd power. That’s the formula that defines the amount of atomic mass units in a gram. It’s the amount of a substance that equals the quantity containing as many units as there are atoms in 0.012 kg of Carbon-12. It might actually be easier to be kind to the furry animal! turn the page for more!

OCTOBER OCCASIONS (continued): • October is a big month for monuments. President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor on an October day in 1886. The statue, officially called the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, had been received from France the previous June in 350 separate parts and was assembled over the next four months. In October 1941, South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore was completed after 14 years of work by sculptor Gutzon Borglum and 400 workers. Unfortunately, Borglum didn’t get to see his 60-foot (18-m) carvings completed, as he died just months before the monument was done. Construction was completed on the St. Louis Arch in October 1965, following 32 months of work. Officially known as the Gateway Arch or Gateway to the West, it is the tallest man-made monument in the United States, towering 630 feet (192 m) over the city of St. Louis. When the structure was completed, the Federal Aviation Administration issued an order that any aviators who flew under the arch would receive a hefty fine and have their pilot’s license revoked. At least 10 pilots have disobeyed the edict. Only once have fliers been permitted — during the July 4th festivities of the nation’s bicentennial in 1976.

• Germany’s Oktoberfest got its start in 1810, celebrating the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The royal couple invited the citizens of Munich to join in their wedding festivities, and the following year, all the merriment was repeated, beginning the tradition of a 16-day Oktoberfest each year. The Munich commemoration is the world’s largest fair, drawing more than five million people every autumn. • October 25 is set aside as St. Crispin’s Day as a tribute to Crispin, the patron saint of shoemakers. According to legend, Crispin, who lived in Rome during the third century, preached during the day and produced shoes at night. Tradition states that he was beheaded for teaching the gospel. • On her 63 birthday in October of 1901, retired schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor and her cat climbed into an oak pickle barrel padded with a mattress and plunged over Niagara Falls. She was the first person to survive the ride. The barrel, held together with seven iron hoops, also contained an anvil for maintaining balance. With the goal of financial security, Taylor aimed to capitalize on her adventure. After collecting meager earnings promoting her feat, she died penniless at age 83. Although she only received a minor concussion and a small cut on her head, she said, “If it was with my dying breath, I would caution anyone against attempting the feat. I would sooner walk up to the mouth of a cannon, knowing it was going to Continued on page 5

Cat Q & A
What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care? Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths. Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

What is your best chance of getting your lost cat back? o Start immediately when your cat is lost! Your action gives your cat its best chance to be found. o Look everywhere in your house and check cabinets, the cloths drier, under beds, in the basement, and check any space that a cat could get into. o Check outside around your house – bushes, the garage, trees, under your car, but check everywhere because a scared cat will hide to survive. o Next check the outside areas of your neighbor’s houses within a block of your house. Most lost cats in the first day are within a block of your house. Intact cats will roam and may be many blocks away in the first few hours. o Have a carrier ready to put your frightened feline in when it is found. o Having a ID collar or rabies tag increases chances of your cat being returned. o Microchipping is the best bet if your cat is brought to a veterinary hospital or humane society. All lost cats are scanned to find their registered owners. o In a recent study, 53% of lost cats were found. Of the cats that were lost 66% came home on their own, 7% were found in the neighborhood, posting signs returned 11%, and only 7% were returned by animal control/humane societies. o So, start immediately if your cat is suspected lost. Search indoors, outdoors close to your house and your neighbors, put up signs, call all your neighbors, call animal control/local humane shelters/veterinary hospitals in your area, and get your cat microchipped. Go to the shelters to look at all ‘lost cats’ found and give fliers out to the local veterinary hospitals, pet shops, and neighbors. o Getting your best friend back involves having a plan to initiate the search.

• In October of 1908, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. And that’s the last time they’ve won it to date; the team has gone 102 years without a championship, the longest of any major North American professional sports team. • That famous silent film “The Sheik,” starring Rudolph Valentino, premiered in October of 1921. Unfortunately, the Italian “Latin Lover,” born Rodolpho Alfonzo Rafaelo Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antonguolla, died just 10 years later at age 31 of peritonitis. And speaking of name changes, Rudolph’s wife Natacha Rambova changed hers slightly as well; she was born Winifred Hudnut! • In 1962, before London Bridge really could fall down, the city of London made plans to replace the 1831 structure, which could no longer support its heavy traffic load. As early as 1924, the east side of the bridge’s foundation was sinking under the weight. In 1968, London sold the bridge to a U.S. oil executive for $2.4 million and thus began the process of dismantling the edifice, carefully numbering each piece to help with reassembly. In October of 1971, the bridge reopened in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and is now the state’s second-biggest tourist attraction, with only the Grand Canyon drawing more visitors. • The “Crash of ‘29” came on October 29, 1929, when the New York Stock Exchange completely collapsed after several days of panic. On “Black Tuesday,” the Dow lost 23 percent of its value, wiping out billions of dollars of wealth in one day. It was the financial ruin of banks, businesses and individuals, which, with soaring unemployment rates, ushered in the 12 years of the Great Depression. • The famous gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, in October 1881 lasted only 30 seconds, with 30 shots fired and three men killed. The Earp Brothers and Doc Holliday were up against the Clanton-McLaury gang, a group of cattle rustlers, thieves and murderers. Two McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton were killed, while Holliday and two of the Earps were wounded. The shootout didn’t really take place in the Corral, but rather in a wide alley six doors east of the Corral’s rear entrance. • The Grand Ole Opry got its start in Nashville in October of 1925 as a one-hour radio broadcast. Featured artists in those early days included The Possum Hunters, The Gully Jumpers and The Fruit Jar Drinkers.

Scott McQueen Perhaps the most remarkable thing about fire opals is the size of the raw stones. Some are as large as a baseball, which increases the variety of ways they can be utilized. Their color is also distinctive. Fire opals have a warm, expressive orange color that varies from yellow to light red, and from time to time, a slight tinge of brown. They can also have a flashy play of color, something typical of opals. The price of a fire opal is determined by three factors: the play of color, the body color and the level of transparency. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body color, the more valuable it will be. Mexico provides gem collectors with the highest valued fire opals; they yield up intense red-orange fire opals that have a robust play of color. So popular is the fire opal in Mexico that it has become their national gemstone. Fire opals are said to appeal to people who are active and who bear a positive approach to life. Perhaps it is their fiery color that helps their owners experience the beauty of life and discover joyfulness in daily living. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. PHOTO: Tori Spelling Q: When will Tori Spelling’s reality show return to Oxygen? It’s one of my guilty pleasures, and I have to admit that I miss it! -- Patty T., via e-mail A: Tori and husband Cindy Rose Dean McDermott will return for the sixth season of “Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood” on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Originally named “Tori and Dean: Inn Love” -- where the couple opened a B-and-B while Tori was eight months pregnant with their first child -- the new season will welcome the couple’s third child together, Hattie Margaret, who was born in October. Hattie joins siblings Liam and Stella, as well as Dean’s son, Jack, from a previous marriage. *** Q: Will “Swamp Wars” be back on Animal Planet anytime soon? -- Fred R., Baton Rouge, La. A: Animal Planet will be bringing back “Swamp Wars” for more drama as the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Venom One unit carries on its battle against the lethal animals that threaten South Florida. A 12-episode second season begins on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, starting with six all-new episodes and another set of six episodes slated to air in 2012. This season has our heroes facing a Tegu lizard outbreak as well as Nile monitors and Burmese pythons -- you know, just the usual deadly invasive creatures. They also battle venomous lionfish, which are proliferating the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, and have no known aquatic enemies. *** Q: I read and enjoy your articles that appear in our newspaper every Sunday.ÊI bet you can answer this: Will “Covert Affairs” on the USA channel be back?Ê-- Virginia G., Webster, N.Y. A: “Covert Affairs” begins airing the second half of its second season on Nov. 1, with six episodes left to round out the season. And I have even more good news for you, Virginia: USA has renewed “Covert Affairs” for a 16-episode third season, to begin airing summer 2012. In fact, all of USA’s original summer programming has been renewed, including “Royal Pains” and “Necessary Roughness.” USA co-presidents Chris McCumber and Jeff Wachtel said in a statement: “USA’s original programming blew through all expectations this summer. It’s a rare and wonderful thing to announce the pick-up of our entire summer of programming.” *** Q: I remember reading in previous columns that you are a big fan of Syfy’s “Being Human,” so I figure you can tell me if/when it’ll be back for a second season? -- Johnny T., via e-mail A: I am, and I can. The werewolf/vampire/ghost paranormal drama will return for its second season on Monday, Jan. 16. As you’ll recall, last season saw the demise of Bishop at the hands of Aidan, with Aidan becoming the new leader of Boston’s vampires; Nora learned Josh is a werewolf, not revealing to him that he scratched her while he was in werewolf form; and Sally missed her window to the Great Beyond to help save Aidan. In the last few years, outfits have popped up offering home owners "forensic loan audits." They say they'll review the homeowner's mortgage loan documents, establish whether the lender complied with federal and state laws and speed up the process of requesting a loan modification. The truth is that even if the audit reveals errors in the loan documents, the process very rarely results in a loan modification or rescind. Even worse, scammers often make false promises that they will secure a loan mod, principal reduction or have the loan rescinded. Then they just string homeowners along or simply disappear. Here's how to protect yourself: Don't trust anyone who guarantees results. Don't work with anyone who asks for an upfront fee. Don't sign any contracts under time pressure and don't sign any you don't understand. Don't stop paying your mortgage, even if they tell you to. Don't give anyone your personal financial information, except an appropriate loan help organization. And of course, we're always here to answer any questions. PS Thinking of taking advantage of today's affordable home prices and historic low mortgage rates to upsize, downsize or refinance? Please call or email us now to discuss your situation. Free Woman’s Hormone Seminar Try to Avoid These Scary Investment Moves If you have kids — or even if you don’t — you’re probably aware that Halloween is fast approaching. Of course, you may find the ghouls, witches and creepy imperCindy Rose sonations of celebrities to be more amusing than alarming, but, as you go through life, you will find some things that are generally frightening — such as investment moves that are misdirected or go awry. Here are some potentially scary investment moves to avoid: Investing too aggressively — In the investment world, here’s one of the fundamental truths: The greater the risk, the greater the potential reward. So, by investing aggressively, you can potentially achieve greater returns. But if you invest too aggressively, you can, quite simply, get burned and lose your principal Investing too conservatively — You can’t invest with no risk. However, you can find investments that offer a higher preservation of principal in exchange for little or no growth potential. But if your portfolio is full of these vehicles, you may never achieve the growth you need to reach your long-term goals. Failing to diversify — If your portfolio mostly consists of the same type of investment, and a downturn hurts that particular class of assets, you’ll take a big hit. But by spreading your dollars among an array of investments you can reduce the effects of volatility on your overall holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Chasing “hot” investments — By the time you hear about a “hot” investment, it will probably already be cooling off. And whether it’s hot or not, it might not be appropriate for your individual needs and risk tolerance. Trading too frequently — If you’re constantly buying and selling investments to maximize your profits, you may end up actually minimizing your success. Frequent trading will run up commissions and other investment costs — and the greater your expenses, the lower your real rate of return. Plus, by always adding and subtracting investments to your portfolio, you’ll find it difficult to follow the type of long-term, consistent, comprehensive strategy that’s necessary to help you attain your objectives, such as saving for retirement. Starting too late — As an investor, you’ll find that time is one of your greatest allies. The earlier you start saving and investing for your goals, the better your chances of attaining them. “Save early and save often” may sound like a cliché, but it’s good advice. Taking a “time out” from investing — Whether it’s a market slump, a political trauma, a natural disaster or some other event, you can always find a reason to head to the investment sidelines for a while until things cool off, straighten out or return to what seems like “normal.” Depending on your goals, not participating in the market may cause you to miss out on any opportunities that the market can present. At times, it can be tough to stay invested, but over the long run, a steady, disciplined approach can be a good strategy. Halloween comes and goes in a single day. But by steering clear of these menacing investment moves, you can help take some of the fear out of investing and make it a more productive experience. Life Insurance Exam Coming Up? Here’s Some Tips… Do You Tithe? Because of THE BLESSING on our life, Christians are empowered to increase and to become greater in all we do. It is the power to become greater in your spirit, in your body, and in your soul. But of course it is not automatic, all of the anointings that go with THE BLESSING are conditional, many of the scriptures that speak of increase start with, if you will do this, and if you will do that, then I will do this. It is a covenant relationship we have with the Lord, His promise is to increase us, and God is faithful. In fact God is always faithful Amen? So then if we are not seeing increase like the Bible speaks about, what is it that we know? We know that the problem does not lie with God, it lies with us. Isa 1:19 tells us…….(KJV) If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: And we must understand that obedience equals faith, that you can’t be a faith person without obedience to this Word, and the very next line, verse 20 is evidence of that. Isaiah 1:20 (KJV) But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it. This is a great example of a conditional promise from God. But we must understand, God is for us and not against us, God wants us, no….needs us to prosper in this earth. Did you hear what I just said? God needs you and He needs me to prosper. Our prosperity is a witness to the world of His goodness to us. Our prosperity is a witness of His great love for His people. God needs you to prosper in order to demonstrate to the world, who He really is, His goodness, His mercy, His love, His kindness. Isa 61:9 is a powerful verse that emphasizes how prosperity is evidence of THE BLESSING in our lives. Isaiah 61:9 (AMP) And their offspring shall be known among the nations and their descendants among the peoples. All who see them [in their prosperity] will recognize and acknowledge that they are the people whom the Lord has blessed. Is it any wonder why the devil wants to persuade Christians that prosperity is not of God? The devil does not want you to be a walking billboard advertising the goodness of God to the world! But there is only one way we partake of those great and precious promises, the way we hook up with THE BLESSING, the way THE BLESSING continues to work in our lives, all begins with the tithe. You cannot separate THE BLESSING, from the tithe, that is where the covenant promises are made manifest, in the tithe. So this week, determine in your heart, that you will become a faithful tither, that you will hook up to God as a covenant partner with Him, and you will give that first 10% of all your increase. When you do that, God opens up the windows of heaven for His people and the world will look upon your life and call you blessed!

Stay hydrated- By drinking water prior to the exam, it can make it easier to draw blood. Fast prior to the exam- Try not to eat 4-8 hours prior to the exam. What may seem like something minor could result in elevated glucose levels for the exam. Just wait until after the exam to have that muffin. Avoid physical exercise- If you can take it easy and avoid rigorous workouts for 12 hours before the exam, do it. Even a fast walk or 30 minutes on the elliptical can alter your results. Hold back on the alcohol- For 12 hours before the exam, avoid consuming alcohol. It can dehydrate you, and a lot of alcohol within 12 hours of the exam could result in elevated liver function tests, which could move you out of a preferred category. Avoid caffeine and nicotine- Try not to drink those 3 cups of coffee or that after lunch cigarette. Both caffeine and nicotine elevate blood pressure. Try to avoid both of these at least an hour prior to the exam. The more time you avoid them, the better. Catch your Z’s- Being well-rested won’t necessarily affect your exam results, but may ease “white coat anxiety”—the tendency for some to exhibit elevated blood pressure readings during an exam. Limit salt and high-fat foods- For an hour before the exam, lay off the salt and fatty foods, as they may affect your results. Know your medications- Generally, you’ll be asked about medical history during the exam. You could be asked If you are currently taking and prescription or over-the-counter medication.
