• From the days of the first roller coaster ride to today, a competition to build the tallest, longest, scariest roller coaster on earth has pushed the industry forward into new realms. In 2004, this competition spurred Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey to announce that they were building the highest and fastest roller coaster on earth. They named it Kingda Ka, after the 535-pound Bengal tiger who resides at the park, although some people joke that “Kingda Ka” is actually Swahili for “OhMyGawd what a ride!”

• In 2005, Kingda Ka opened for business, claiming the title of both the fastest and the tallest roller coaster on the planet. The coaster cars rocket to the top of a 456-foot tower, accelerating from 0 to 128 mph within 3.5 seconds, before a stomach-clenching cork-screw drop back down to earth. A second 13-story hill gives riders a few moments of weightlessness before the ride is over, less than 60 seconds after it began.

• The secret to Kingda Ka’s thrill is all in the launch sequence. Whereas standard older roller coasters employ a cable system which slowly and laboriously winches a car to the top of a hill, the Kingda Ka uses space-age hydraulic engineering to launch a car in exactly the same sort of way an aircraft is launched from an aircraft carrier, with similar thrust and G-forces involved. The system is basically a high tech catapult, with a giant hydraulic launch system delivering 12,500 horsepower in a single colossal blast – twelve times the horse power of a Formula One race car. Eight military grade 500-horsepower hydraulic motors – which took a year to construct – charge up the accumulators, forcing hydraulic fluid into the chambers under great pressure. When a trigger is pulled, the pressure is released and the car is launched at rocket speed. It’s similar in many ways to blowing up a balloon and then letting it go. Kingda Ka is one of only two roller coasters in the world that uses this technology. The experience has been compared to being in a jet fighter, or being a drag racer. QUICK BITS • It takes only ten seconds to go from launch to being 456 feet in the air on top of the tower. • The highest point of the ride is 45 stories tall, which is about 4/5ths the height of the Washington Monument. It’s tall enough that the entire Statue of Liberty would fit under the main arch with 100 feet to spare. • On foggy days, you can’t see the top of the tower from the bottom. • The ride cost $25 million to construct. • The entire track is just over 1,000 yards long. • Fittingly enough, the very first passengers were the engineers who built it. • The braking system, done with magnetic fields generated by 473 magnets, means there’s no friction to wear parts out. It’s silent, efficient, and fail-safe. • The roller coaster has four cars, and each car seats 18 passengers. About 1,400 people per hour take the ride. Continued on page 7

The Deadly Seven Feline Viruses What is a virus and how does it cause disease? A virus is not a true living disease organism like a bacterium or fungus. It is a complex collection of genetic molecules, either DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coating. A virus is made up of chemical sequences that reproduce themselves rapidly in an animal or plant and it can cause disease. Medical researchers ascribe the words – “a smart virus”, “ability to adapt”, “a killer bug” giving the virus almost human characteristics, whereas the biochemist will ascribe chemical reactions and base pairings as a laboratory experiment devoid of all living character. They are both right. A virus’s job is to make as many copies of itself as quickly as possible. Viruses enter the body and make large numbers of viral copies using the cat’s cells as a virus factory. Ultimately the infected cells burst, shedding large numbers of viral copies that infect other normal cells and then the process is repeated over and over again. Viral infections can spread throughout an animal’s body at a very rapid pace causing sickness or death. A cat with a healthy immune system or who has been vaccinated against a specific virus, can stop the invasion and remain virus free. Poor immunity will cause the cat to become ill and many individuals die. The Deadly Seven: •

(FPV) Feline Panleukopenia virus (feline distemper) is a highly contagious virus that can quickly kill cats that do not have a healthy stimulated immune system. (FHV) Feline Herpes virus is a highly contagious virus that causes severe upper respiratory distress – sneezing, troubled breathing and decreased appetite. (FCV) Feline Calici virus is a highly contagious virus that infects the nose, eyes and causes ulcers in the mouth. (RV) Rabies virus is that attacks the central nervous system and is inevitably fatal. (FeLV) Feline Leukemia virus directly or indirectly causes multiple diseases that are ultimately fatal. (FIV) Feline Immunodeficiency virus that weakens the immune system and eventually the cat is overcome by multiple diseases. (FIP) Feline Infectious Peritonitis virus causes the cat’s immune system to spread a fatal disease throughout the body.

Scott McQueen Perhaps the most remarkable thing about fire opals is the size of the raw stones. Some are as large as a baseball, which increases the variety of ways they can be utilized. Their color is also distinctive. Fire opals have a warm, expressive orange color that varies from yellow to light red, and from time to time, a slight tinge of brown. They can also have a flashy play of color, something typical of opals. The price of a fire opal is determined by three factors: the play of color, the body color and the level of transparency. The more transparency and 'fire' it has, and the more intense the deep red of its body color, the more valuable it will be. Mexico provides gem collectors with the highest valued fire opals; they yield up intense red-orange fire opals that have a robust play of color. So popular is the fire opal in Mexico that it has become their national gemstone. Fire opals are said to appeal to people who are active and who bear a positive approach to life. Perhaps it is their fiery color that helps their owners experience the beauty of life and discover joyfulness in daily living.

A: Stored correctly, firewood can last for several seasons if need be, so your remaining half-cord should be fine for use this winter. It has continued to season and is probably much drier than it was last year, meaning it will likely catch and burn faster. Large amounts of firewood that will be stored through the winter and into the next cold season generally should be kept several feet from the house at minimum. The wood should be kept off the ground -- loaded on a pallet or a storage rack -- and stacked evenly. This creates good airflow between the logs, allows it to dry quickly after a rain storm, and reduces the number of insects that take up residence in the stack, as well as discourages rodents from creating nests in it. How much firewood you should purchase and store each year is entirely up to you. I’ve often passed homes in the Northeastern countryside that have several cords of neatly cut wood stacked underneath the crawlspace of outlying barns, sheds, or sometimes even the houses themselves. In suburban and urban areas, this is probably not acceptable to the neighbors or may violate local ordinances. Plan to have no more than two winters’ worth of firewood stacked near your house. The amount depends on how much you use your fireplace, and whether it is a necessity to warm the home or just a decorative element.

• In 2009, the roller coaster was struck by lighting in the middle of the night when the park was closed. It suffered serious damage and was closed for repairs. • Because it is so close to the Jersey Shore, the coaster is capable of withstanding hurricane force winds. Nevertheless, damage occurred during Hurricane Irene in 2011, and the ride was closed for repairs once again. No one has ever been killed while riding the Kingda Ka. The odds of being injured on an amusement park ride are 1 in 23 million. According to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission, in 1999 over 600,000 people were injured on bikes, just under 100,000 on trampolines, nearly 50,000 while using golf equipment, while 7,260 were injured on amusement park rides, and only 138 of those people needed to be hospitalized. Most injuries are due to people failing to follow rules rather than equipment failure.

LARKSPUR PIZZARIA & CAFE
BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE So where should you sit to get the best ride? Depends on what you’re looking for. Sitting in the very back of a coaster train yields the wildest ride since the last car is being pulled by the weight of the front cars, making for some nice whipping action, especially if they are long trains on steep hills. However, sitting in the front has benefits too. The very first car will hang over the first drop waiting for the rest of the cars to crest the hill before the big plunge. Front cars also have better low-G moments when the train is going over the top of low hill, leading to better stomach-lifting airtime. The ride is usually smoothest in the middle of the train, a good spot for beginners.

ners Sorbitol and Xylitol actually help prevent cavities. Not only is this a smart choice to drop into those little monsters’ Halloween bags, parents can also give it to their child to help neutralize the sugary-snack effects after eating. These special sweetners are effective in combating the bacteria and their harmful acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth.
by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry
2. Chew just about anything: Chewing stimulates the flow of saliva, which cleanses the teeth.
Protect Your Little “Monsters” teeth from Harm This Halloween
3. Rinse immediately after meals and snacks: Swishing and rinsing with water helps wash out stuck food particles and helps neutralize harmful decay acids. BUT……..if you wait 20-30 minutes to rinse, it’s too late. The acids are only strong enough to attack in the first 20 minutes after a meal or snack.
Q. What can I do keep all that sugary Halloween candy from turning my child’s mouth into a

4. Avoid the sticky stuff: Even some healthy foods, such as “sticky” fruits and nuts can lodge in the in-between areas and in pits and grooves of the teeth. (Raisins are really bad with a double whammy – they’re loaded with sugar AND very, very sticky!)
A. Relax! Your child can have Halloween fun without harming their teeth. According to the

5. Avoid Soda and other sugary and acidy drinks. Both “regular” and “diet” sodas can harm the teeth. The sugar in the “regular” and the high-acid chemistry of both attack enamel. Also, reduce the “frequency” of exposure. It’s better to “chug-a-lug” the entire can, than to “sip” small amounts over a period of time, since with each exposure the acid attacks the tooth for

"Scary" Investment Moves to Avoid
A presidential election is almost upon us. But if you have young children or grandchildren, you know what’s really important this week is Butterfingers, not ballots, and Pop Rocks, not the popular vote.

Yes, it’s Halloween time again, which means you’ll see plenty of witches and vampires scurrying around. You’ll no doubt find these characters more amusing than frightening, but you don’t have to look far to find things that are a bit more alarming — such as these scary investment moves:
Paying too much attention to the headlines — Some headlines may seem unnerving, but don’t abandon your investment strategy just because the news of the day appears grim. Chasing “hot” investments — You can get “hot” investment tips from the talking heads on television, your next-door neighbor or just about anybody. But even if the tip was accurate at one point, by the time you get to a “hot” investment, it may already be cooling down. And, even more importantly, it simply may not be appropriate for your individual risk tolerance and goals. Ignoring different types of investment risk — Most investors are aware of the risk of losing principal when investing in stocks. But if you shun stocks totally in favor of perceived “risk-free” investments, you’d be making a mistake because all investments carry some type of risk. For example, with fixed-income investments, including CDs and bonds, one risk you will encounter is inflation risk — the risk that your investment will provide you with returns that won’t even keep up with inflation and will, therefore, result in a loss of purchasing power over time. Another risk you will incur is interest-rate risk — the risk that new bonds will be issued at higher rates, driving down the price of your bonds. Bonds also carry the risk of default, though you can reduce this risk by sticking with bonds that receive the highest ratings from independent rating agencies. Failing to diversify — If you only own one type of investment, and a market downturn affects that particular asset class, your portfolio could take a big hit. But by spreading your dollars among an array of vehicles, such as stocks, bonds and government securities, you can reduce the effects of volatility on your holdings. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee profits or protect against loss.) Focusing on the short term — If you concentrate too much on short-term results, you may react to a piece of bad news, or to a period of extreme price gyrations, by making investment moves that are counterproductive to your goals. Furthermore, if you’re constantly seeking to instantaneously turn around losses, you’ll likely rack up fees, commissions and possibly taxes. Avoid all these hassles by keeping your eyes on the future and sticking to a long-term, personalized strategy. You can’t always make the perfect investment choices. But by steering clear of the “scary” moves described above, you can work toward your long-term goals and hopefully avoid some of the more fearsome results.

¥ On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it. ¥ On Nov. 16, 1901, a low-slung car called the “Torpedo Racer” -- basically a square platform on bicycle wheels -- breaks the world speed record for electric cars in Coney Island, N.Y., by going 1 mile down the straight dirt track in just 63 seconds. That’s about 57 mph. Today the world speed record for an electric vehicle is about 245 mph. ¥ On Nov. 14, 1914, in Constantinople, capital of the Ottoman Empire, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declares an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ottoman government, urging his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro. ¥ On Nov. 15, 1943, Heinrich Himmler makes public an order that Gypsies are to be put on “the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps.” Himmler was determined to prosecute Nazism racial policies, which dictated the elimination of all races deemed “inferior” and “asocial.” ¥ On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor. ¥ On Nov. 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders score two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York Jets -- and no one sees it. In a debacle which would become known as “Heidi Bowl,” with just 65 seconds left to play, NBC broke away from the game to air its previously scheduled programming, the movie “Heidi.” ¥ On Nov. 18, 1987, a fire in a London subway station kills 30 commuters and injures scores of others.
