• There are more than 7,500 known varieties of apples, each with its own specific characteristics and qualities. Some are tart, some are sweet. Some are meant for eating fresh, some for cooking, and still others for cider production. • The Malus domestica, the apple tree, originated in eastern Turkey. More apples are grown in China than any other nation, about half of the world’s supply. The United States is a distant second, producing about 5% of the world’s apples, while Turkey is in third place. About 70 million tons of apples are grown worldwide annually. • When the Pilgrims arrived in North America in the 17th century, they discovered crabapples, but disliked their sour and woody taste. The colonists requested that seeds and cuttings be sent from England on subsequent voyages, and North America’s first apple orchard was planted in Boston in 1625. During the early 1800s, Massachusetts native John Chapman traveled across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois planting apple trees, and became known as Johnny Appleseed.

Interesting Stuff
ALL ABOUT APPLES (continued): • In 1820, a London sea captain brought seeds to North America’s western coast, the origin of the state of Washington’s apple crop, the largest in the U.S. More than 60% of America’s apple crop of 220,000,000 bushels are grown in Washington. That’s a lot of apples, considering that one bushel is 48 lbs. (21.8 kg.)! • Although we think of Eve convincing Adam to eat a forbidden apple in the Garden of Eden, the Bible’s Book of Genesis does not actually identify the fruit as an apple. It refers to it as the fruit of the “tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” In ancient languages, the word “apple” was used as a generic term for any round fruit that grew on a tree, bringing about the common misconception that Eve was tempted with an apple. • Apples were associated with pagan religious practices and as mythological symbols. Norse mythology portrays apples as a source of eternal youthfulness, while Greek and Roman myths refer to the fruit as a symbol of love and beauty. Remains of apples have been found in the graves of early Germanic people • The Jonathan apple is mostly red with patches of lime green. There are differences of opinion as to how this variety got its name. Some say an Ohio woman, Rachel Higley, was responsible for discovering it in 1804, and cultivating an orchard of this tart fruit, naming it after her husband Jonathan. Others claim it was first discovered in 1826 in Woodstock, New York, and was named after Jonathan Hasbrouck, who first introduced the fruit. • The McIntosh apple has its origins in Canada, discovered by John McIntosh on his Ontario farm in 1811.

APPLES (continued): • The flavor of the Golden Delicious apple varies depending on the climate. When grown in a cool climate, the amount of acid increases, resulting in a sweeter taste, while in a warmer climate, the acid quantity is lower, and the apple has a milder flavor. This variety was first discovered on a West Virginia farm in 1890 and was known as the Mullins Yellow Seedling for 25 years before being renamed. The Golden Delicious has been used as a parent to develop several other varieties including the Gala, Ambrosia, Pink lady, and Jonagold. • The number of apples imported from New Zealand is increasing every year. The popular Braeburn apple was developed there in 1952, and another favorite, the Gala, was cultivated in New Zealand beginning in the 1970s. • The phrase “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a common one. But where did it originate? The first recorded use of the old proverb is in the 1860s in a Pembrokeshire, Wales, publication in a little different form: “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” • It’s certainly true that apples help keep a person healthy. They are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants that keep the body on track. Their supply of Vitamin C helps the body resist infection and disease, while an apple’s B-complex vitamins are vital to a healthy metabolism. Its potassium content aids in controlling heart rate and blood pressure. • Apples are full of fiber, about 4 grams in a medium-size fruit. Research has shown that those who eat high-fiber foods have a higher protection against Parkinson’s Disease and high cholesterol. Continued on page 5

Keep your cats indoors especially during the month of October. In Douglas County with the coyotes it is safer to keep your cats in year round. Halloween night and the weekend before, it is a good idea to keep your cats locked in a safe area of your house. The stress and noise of “Trick or Treat” and the endless doorbell ringing will cause even the calmest cat to be stressed. A frightened cat will escape the confusion and run into the night. Many lost pets occur on Halloween night. Keep your cats safe and as an added precaution – have your cats microchipped. If your cat gets lost he/she will have a very good chance of being reunited with your family if he is ‘chipped’. Happy Halloween!

Halloween is a time of fun for kids and grownups. Parties, ‘Trick or Treating’, and costumes are all part of the celebration but black cats have little cause to celebrate. Cruel people often torture and kill black cats around Halloween. If you hear or see any abuse of cats around this holiday or at any time report the happening to Animal Control. People who abuse animals are also highly likely to abuse children and spouses so it is important to take action and report the incidence. Animal shelters routinely will not adopt out black cats around this holiday because of the potential for abuse. In England it is the white cat that is the Halloween demon or ‘evil cat’. Cats around the world have at times been maligned by humans. During the middle ages large numbers of cats were executed along with witches for causing the ‘black death’ – bubonic plague. Little did the authorities know that killing cats made the rat problem worse and the plague more rampant. Farmers held their cats in high esteem and rarely had the ‘black death’ strike their families. Also, horses repel fleas which had the added benefit of stopping the spread of the plague.

APPLES (continued): • How about some positive percentages? The American Association for Cancer Research tells us that eating apples can reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by up to 23%. Women who eat one apple every day are 28% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, while other studies indicate that the apple’s antioxidants contribute to a 15% reduced likelihood of developing cataracts. • Pregnant women who regularly consume apples are less likely to have children with asthma. Apple eaters have better lung function. Apples can even aid in preventing tooth decay by stimulating the production of saliva, which lowers the levels of the mouth’s bacteria. And they’re low in calories – about 95 in one medium-sized apple. With all these health benefits, why wouldn’t we all want to have an apple a day? • Apples also have their place in folklore. Legend has it that if you can peel an apple in one long strip, then toss it backwards over your left shoulder, the shape made by the peel will be the initial of your future spouse. An old wives’ tale says that warts can be cured by cutting an apple into the number of pieces equal to the number of warts. Rub each apple piece on a wart, then bury the pieces. As the fruit rots in the ground, the warts are said to disappear. During Yuletide, many cultures engage in the ancient custom of wassailing the apple trees to drive away bad luck and ensure a good harvest. Farmers choose one tree, and the village folk gather round it, drinking to the tree with cider. Cider is also thrown over the roots, followed by placing a piece of bread soaked in cider into a fork of the tree’s branches. FAMOUS CANADIANS:
JIM CARREY
Jim Carrey is in the spotlight this week, a multi-talented Ontario native who has made us all laugh. • Jim Carrey was a born comedian, performing for his junior high classmates at an early age. His father was a musician, but was obliged to get a “real” job to support his wife and children. However, when Jim was a teenager, his father lost that job, and the family quickly became nearly poverty-stricken, even living out of a van for a time. Carrey, a straight-A student, was forced to drop out to help support the family, working as a janitor at a factory. When his mother became seriously ill and was bedridden, Carrey practiced his comedy on her to make her laugh.

• When he was 10 years old, Carrey wrote to Carol Burnett, asking if he could appear on her variety show. He never received a reply. However, 36 years later, his dream of starring with the famed comedienne came true when the two of them did voice-overs in Horton Hears a Who. • At age 17, Carrey bravely moved to Los Angeles and managed to get a gig at The Comedy Store. It was there that he was spotted by comedian Rodney Dangerfield, who signed him as his opening act on tour. Carrey auditioned for Saturday Night Live in 1980, but was not selected. (Ironically, he went on to host the show twice.) In 1983, at age 21, Carrey debuted on The Tonight Show.

• Carrey first became well-known in 1990, when he landed a regular slot on the comedy show In Living Color. The year 1994 was a big one for Carrey, as he had the leading role in three hits, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, and The Mask. An Ace Ventura sequel came out the following year and Carrey’s stardom was secured. He took over the role of The Riddler in 1995’s Batman Forever. In 1996, he became the first actor to command a $20 million salary for a film in his role in The Cable Guy.

Plant pansies, mums and more Trees turning color remind us that the time has come to refurbish patio and porch containers with the bright colors of fall. And that goes for bed areas too. Now that we're enjoying our patios into the fall longer than ever, we need seasonal color that outlives the petunias. The welcome container on the front porch also needs to be in tune with the season.
With Advanced Network/Mobile Ready Technology
For many plants, the cool nights and warm days this time of year are ideal growing conditions. Planting perennials now in bed areas still gives them time to settle in before winter without having to endure the hot days of summer. Why pansies? Pansies and their smaller cousins - violas - are standbys for fall flowers and for good reason. They are hardy enough to bloom throughout the fall and even during the winter in some locations. Best yet, they'll be back early next season with bright spring color.
Video Security Systems They’re more affordable than you think.
There's never a boring moment with pansies. Combine black and orange pansies for Halloween - or orange and blue for the Bronco season. Pansies in traditional orange, rust and yellow can also be mixed with other plants.

Perennials that pop Other great fall bloomers are asters and mums. Find your favorite colors ranging from lavender and purple to soft and brilliant yellow to rust and bronze. Most asters and mums are perennials that you can plant this fall and enjoy for years to come. Perennials are a great addition to fall containers. Plant them along with annuals such as dianthus or snapdragons. Other good perennials include sedum, ivy, plumbago, dianthus, yarrow, grasses and Helen's flower. Don't leave out leaves! Add foliage in fall combinations. Foliage adds drama when included with flowers because of the deep shades and texture that make them distinctive. Add ornamental kale, sedum, coral bells and ornamental grasses into containers and beds alike. Their deep hues, shapes and textures will backstop flowering plants and make their color pop. Build upon holiday themes There are many creative ways to add Halloween and Thanksgiving interest to fall containers and beds. Look for: • pumpkin shaped containers • plastic witches' cauldrons • buckets and barrels • copper or other metal containers with a weathered patina. Take advantage of the colorful fall season to enjoy outdoor ambiance, plants and gardening a few weeks more. Chris Dominy is the owner of Parker based BestYard.com and Weed Man Lawn Care. Protect Your Little “Monsters” teeth from Harm This Halloween Q. What can I do keep all that sugary Halloween candy from turning my child’s mouth into a “nightmare”…..and a big dental bill?

A. Relax! Your child can have Halloween fun without harming their teeth. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), more than 90 percent of children will go trick or treating this year, and return home with bags full of candy. (Let’s face it: Most households don’t give out the “good stuff ”, do they? Just a few preventive steps can make a big difference: 1.
Chew Sugar-Free Gum, especially the kind that have the sweetners Sorbitol and Xylitol actually help prevent cavities. Not only is this a smart choice to drop into those little monsters’ Halloween bags, parents can also give it to their child to help neutralize the sugary-snack effects after eating. These special sweetners are effective in combating the bacteria and their harmful acids that eat away at the enamel of the teeth.
2.
Chew just about anything: Chewing stimulates the flow of saliva, which cleanses the teeth.
3.
Rinse immediately after meals and snacks: Swishing and rinsing with water helps wash out stuck food particles and helps neutralize harmful decay acids. BUT……..if you wait 20-30 minutes to rinse, it’s too late. The acids are only strong enough to attack in the first 20 minutes after a meal or snack.
4.
5.
Avoid the sticky stuff : Even some healthy foods, such as “sticky” fruits and nuts can lodge in the in-between areas and in pits and grooves of the teeth. (Raisins are really bad with a double whammy – they’re loaded with sugar AND very, very sticky!) Avoid Soda and other sugary and acidy drinks. Both “regular” and “diet” sodas can harm the teeth. The sugar in the “regular” and the high-acid chemistry of both attack enamel. Also, reduce the “frequency” of exposure. It’s better to “chug-a-lug” the entire can, than to “sip” small amounts over a period of time, since with each exposure the acid attacks the tooth for 20-30 minutes.
6.

Now for the obvious: Brush three times daily – for 20 minutes, and don’t forget to floss too. Remember – you don’t need to floss ALL your teeth – just the ones you want to keep!

The answer is YES! Physical therapy can be beneficial with the use of specific teaching methods and techniques. For example: (William Staples andMoveForwardPT.com) - Visual, verbal and tactile cueing: This technique uses pointing to objects or gesturing with short, simple onestep instruction. - Mirroring: The therapist stands directly in front of the person showing them how to move. - Task breakdown: Involves breaking down the task into short, simple ʻpiecesʼ to be completed separately. - Chaining: Is the linking of one step to the next step in the more complicated movement. - Hand over hand facilitation: The therapist takes the hand or other body part of the person who needs to move or complete a task and moves that body part through the motion. Physical therapy and other rehabilitative services have much to offer persons with Alzheimerʼs Disease to improve function, manage daily activities, reduce caregiver stress and enhance the quality of life for all. Instead of picking from the top agents the CIA recommends, Reynolds goes with a group of “throwaways,” those deemed expendable and seemingly the worst in the organization. Led by Lt. Col. Christopher Holden (Caan), and including gungho combat specialist Dan Fisher (Dillon), the throwaways have to track and take down a cyber-terrorist who is threatening mass destruction. Look for the film on Crackle this December. *** Q: I am so addicted to “Outlander.” Can you tell me when the second half of season one will air? -- Jeanne D., via email A: Outlander returns from its winter hiatus with eight more episodes beginning April 4 on Starz. You, I and millions of other fans will have to wait patiently for six months to see Jamie rescue Claire from Black Jack Randall. I know it’s going to seem like forever. Here’s to hoping they don’t split up season two like that, right? *** Q: Is there seriously going to be a “Zoolander” sequel? I loved the first one, but I wonder how good a second one will be. -- Justin R. in Oklahoma A: Rumors have been swirling for years about a sequel, and Will Ferrell confirmed in September that “Zoolander 2” is happening, and that his character, Mugatu, will be a part of it. Justin Theroux is rumored to be directing the movie, which he co-wrote with Ben Stiller, who will co-star along with Owen Wilson. The plot has Derek Zoolander (played by Stiller) and Hansel (Wilson) trying to compete against younger models as an opposing company tries to force them out of the business. I guess the Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good didn’t do so well, and Derek had to return to modeling to make ends meet. *** Q: With Halloween approaching, can you tell me if there will be another “Good Witch” movie? -- Patsy R., via email A: Catherine Bell and company are returning to the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 9/8c with the premiere of “The Good Witch’s Wonder.” With the popularity of the movies, be on the lookout for “The Good Witch” television series in early 2015. Moonstone
Scott McQueen
Moonstone, one of June’s birthstones (along with Alexandrite and Pearl), has a mysterious shimmer like that of a bright summer moon. A lovely moonstone gem will play with the light and shadows using the discreet colors of beige-brown, green, orange, brown or blue making it an ideal stone for jewelry. Some call it a “lover’s stone” because it brings to mind soft, tender feelings and transmits the true joy of love. It is also believed that your intuition and wisdom are increased when you wear a moonstone. In India moonstones are regarded as “dream stones” that will bring the wearer delightful visions at night. In Arabic countries women are known to wear moonstones sewn into their garments and out of sight, for in their cultures the moonstone is a symbol of fertility. Moonstones with a bluish shimmer come from Sri Lanka. Since they are becoming more rare as the years go by, their prices are always increasing. Other less rare Moonstones are found in the USA, Brazil, Australia, Myanmar and Madagascar. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. HOLLYWOOD By Tony Rizzo PHOTO: Dan Stevens HOLLYWOOD -- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have worked together only once, in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” in 2005. Both said that they wanted to give up acting: Angelina, presumably, for directing, and Brad for producing. Angelina wanted to direct the film “Africa,” but there are legal problems between Jon Peters and his former wife, Christine Forsyth Peters, over who owns the rights to it. So Angelina instead will direct “By the Sea,” which she wrote, to be produce by Brad Pitt. Oh yes, they’ve also hired each other to star in the film. The dynamicduo already is filming at Mgarr ix-Xini bay on the rocky island of Gozo, off Malta in the Mediterranean. Let’s see the paparazzi follow them there. Cindy Rose *** Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn have taken over for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the new season of HBO’s “True Detective.” The story revolves around three cops and a career criminal who navigate a web of conspiracy after a murder. *** When Dan Stevens left the role of Matthew Crawley on “Downton Abbey” after 25 episodes between 2010 and 2012 to break into films, no one had any idea how well he’d do. Currently, he can be seen in theaters in “Walk Among the Tombstones” with Liam Neeson, and his own starring vehicle, “The Guest.” He’ll next be seen as Sir Lancelot in “Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb” (out Dec. 19) with Ben Stiller, Ben Kingsley, Owen Wilson, Dick Van Dyke and the final performances of Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney. Stevens also stars in “The Cobbler” with Adam Sandler, Dustin Hoffman and Steve Buscemi, awaiting a release date, while “Criminal Activities” with John Travolta is slated to open June 1. Stevens currently is filming “The Ticket” on the streets of New York. His gamble to leave “Downton Abbey” to star on Broadway, with Jessica Chastain in “The Heiress,” has really paid off. We’ll be seeing a lot of him in the future. *** “The Lion King” went from an animated film to the Broadway stage so successfully that after 17 years, it has earned $6.2 billion worldwide and has taken in more money than any other film in the history of movies. Even “Avatar,” the No. 1 grossing film of all time, earned only $2.8 billion. Ah, but then there’s “Avatar 2, 3 and 4” coming, along with the prequel! *** Barbra Streisand said in a recent interview that she would only star in the classic film “Gypsy” next year. She said, “I began my film career in ‘Funny Girl’ and it only seems fitting to end it with ‘Gypsy.’” Her love interest, Herbie, could be played by her husband, James Brolin. If there has to be nepotism ... keep it in the family!

Event challenges horse trainers Competition will bring together top horsemen working with novice animals ELIZABETH, Colo – For centuries, training horses has been a major part of ranch work worldwide. The key, all horsemen say, comes in the early stages of a colt’s development. “The funnest time of training horses is the first few days,” said Victor Sundquist, a lifelong trainer from Olathe, Colo. Such is the foundation for Colt Starting Challenge USA, an association of two-day competitions that feature trainers utilizing natural horsemanship methods with young horses. The next event is scheduled 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, and 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Silver Buckle Ranch in Elizabeth. Sundquist is a two-time champion who has excelled at numerous challenges, most recently at the event in Cortez, Colo., where he walked away with the championship. “In the first two days, the colt is able to learn new things really fast,” said Sundquist, 20, now in his fifth year of training professionally. “It’s amazing what you can do in the first hour. I’ve actually been able to stand up on a horse in the first couple of hours.” That quick timeline becomes quite evident during the Colt Starting Challenge. Each trainer is matched with a horse via random draw; the colts have not been started and have never been saddled nor bridled. The trainers will work with the animals over the course of two two-hour sessions set up over two days, and judges will determine which of the trainers wins. “We will have two hours of work the first day with a half-hour break in between,” said Russell Beatty, who founded the Colt Starting Challenge USA. “This is all done with an audience, and each contestant has a microphone so that when it’s their time to talk, they can say what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. “The second day has two 45-minute sessions with a break in between. After the second session, we tear down the round pens, set up our obstacle course and the contestants ride their horse through the obstacle course. The winner gets a buckle.” The contestants love the idea. “I honestly see this as a great idea with a great future, which is why I’m doing it,” said Bob Mundy of Norco, Calif., who has competed in two events, including one victory. “I really like the whole philosophy behind it. This gives the smaller guy, the guy that has no name, the opportunity to go out and show his skills and promote himself. “I also think it educates people, because you will have four guys who do things similarly but they do them differently.” It’s a brilliant opportunity for horse owners to see what professional trainers can accomplish in a short amount of time. “For anybody that does this, our goal is to promote how we go about it,” Mundy said. “I like colt starting because I like being able to start horses and get them a good foundation. The first few days with a horse makes all the difference in a horse. “The people who come to these events can see the different methods coming together. They can see the different things going on. I really see the Colt Starting Challenge growing and making something positive. I think it’s something that’s needed. What I really like about it is, in the competitions I did, everybody was really helpful. We’re there to support each other. We want everybody to succeed.” It’s that type of progress that makes the Colt Starting Challenges a draw not only for competitors but also for horse-loving fans who come to see the trainers at work. They can take some of the lessons they learn inside the arena back home or consider utilizing one of the trainers with their animals. The shows are set up in a fan-friendly environment that makes each performance enlightening. “It’s really fun because it’s something new,” Sundquist said. “I really enjoy it and think it’s awesome.” So do other trainers and the fans who witness it firsthand. -30-

What Are the Key USES of Cash? As an investor, you may find that the elements of your portfolio that seem to draw most of your attention are stocks and bonds. After all, these investment vehicles, and others derived from them, provide you with potential growth and income opportunities — which is Cindy Rose why you invest in the first place. Yet, you also may find significant value in a more humble financial asset: cash. In fact, you might be surprised at the various ways in which the cash, and cash equivalents, in your portfolio can help you complete your financial picture. One way to understand the uses of cash is to look at the “USES” of cash. In other words, consider the acronym USES: Unexpected expenses and emergencies — You’ll need sufficient cash for situations such as a job loss, a home repair or an unplanned medical expense. During your working years, you should keep three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a cash account specifically designed to meet unexpected expenses. Once you’re retired, you may be able to get by on a smaller emergency fund — up to three months’ worth of living expenses, although you will need more for everyday spending. Specific short-term savings goal — Are you anticipating a big expense —a wedding, a big vacation, a down payment on a new home, etc. — sometime within the next few years? If so, you’ll want to set aside sufficient cash, with the exact amount depending on your specific short-term goal. Everyday spending — It goes without saying that you’ll need adequate cash for your everyday spending needs — groceries, utilities, entertainment, mortgage/debt payments, and so on. Of course, while you’re working, you will probably handle most of these costs with your paychecks, but you may still need to set aside one or two months’ worth of living expenses. Once you’re retired, though, it’s a somewhat different story. While your expenses may go down in some areas (such as costs associated with employment), they are likely to go up in others (such as health care). So your overall cost of living may not drop much, if at all. Consequently, it may be a good idea to set aside 12 months’ worth of living expenses, after incorporating other sources of income, such as Social Security and outside employment. In addition, you’ll have to decide on the most efficient way of drawing on your other sources of income, including Social Security and investment accounts such as an IRA, a 401(k), etc. It’s especially important to create a sustainable withdrawal strategy for your investment portfolio because you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your money. Source of investment — You’ll want to have some cash available in your portfolio — perhaps 2% to 3% of the portfolio’s value — to take advantage of investment opportunities as they arise. Also, having even a small percentage of your portfolio devoted to cash can modestly improve your overall diversification — and a diversified portfolio is your best defense against market volatility. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) So, there you have it: four key USES of cash. Taken together, they provide some good reasons to keep at least a modest “stream” of liquid assets in your portfolio. STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • It was President John F. Kennedy who defined happiness as “the full use of your powers along lines of excellence.” • Any novelty seeker planning a trip to Japan ought to include a trip to the town of Susami, home to the world’s deepest underwater postbox. A scuba diver who would like to send a unique message should head to the local dive shop and buy a special water-resistant postcard, then use an oil-based marker to write the message. On a dive off the town’s coast, the diver can head down 30 feet to deposit the mail in a red postbox, which is checked every few days by a dive-shop employee. All the postcards are then taken to the local post office and sent on to the recipients. • Considering the ever-increasing cost of postage, you might be surprised to learn that the U.S. Postal Service was free until 1863. • Milton Hershey, creator of the iconic Hershey Bar and founder of the Pennsylvania company town that bears his name, grew up in a Mennonite family, working on the family farm. He had no formal schooling past the fourth grade. He served as an apprentice to a candy maker, then started his own confectionery. It failed. His second attempt also was a failure. His third attempt in the candy business was such a success that he sold the company for a large profit in 1900. He immediately used the proceeds from that sale to come up with his own formula for milk chocolate and create the Hershey Company. • Those who study such things say that 20 percent of American men have spent at least one night in jail. *** Thought for the Day: “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.” -- Pablo Picasso (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
