This Tidbits tackles some football stadiums where history was made. Looking only at college stadiums, let’s kick back and learn! • Three of the oldest college football stadiums in the nation are in the northeast, where the oldest institutions of higher learning in this country exist. • The University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field is considered by the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) to be the oldest football stadium. Built in 1895, it originally cost $100,000. Rebuilt in 1922, it became the nation’s first two-tiered stadium. Franklin Field was the location of the nation’s first scoreboard in 1895, first football radio broadcast in 1922, and first telecast in 1939. • The horseshoe-shaped Harvard Stadium is claimed on Harvard’s website to be the nation’s oldest stadium. Built in 1903, recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the stadium was the world’s first “massive reinforced concrete structure.” • The first bowl-shaped stadium was the Yale Bowl, opened at Yale University in 1914. When it opened it was the largest stadium in the world since construction of the Roman Coliseum in 80 AD. It is one of four National Historic Landmarks on Yale’s campus. turn the page for more!

FOOTBALL STADIUMS(continued): • Another historic stadium dating back to 1913 is Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech’s Grant Field. It is the oldest continuouslyused on-campus college football site in the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A). The game has been played at the downtown Atlanta site since 1905. The stadium was the site of the most lopsided game in football history. Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland College 222-0 in 1916! • A west coast college football venue listed on the National Historic Landmark, but not as old as Yale or Harvard, is the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Home field for the University of Southern California (USC), this is the only stadium in the world that has hosted the Olympics twice. It has also hosted the Super Bowl and the World Series. • Another California field, Stanford Stadium, made a lot of history in its 84-year life span. In spite of this, it was decided that the best thing for the school, players and fans was to replace the stadium. A new structure opened in 2006. One of the biggest complaints about the old Stanford Stadium was inadequate restroom facilities. The restrooms were enlarged but overall the new stadium was made smaller. The old stadium, built in 1921, had a seating capacity of 86,000, and held as many as 94,000. The new stadium is built for a crowd of 50,000. • Of the big events held at the old Stanford stadium, two standouts were: when Herbert Hoover, a Stanford grad and former football manager, accepted the Republican nomination for president in 1928; and a track meet between the U.S. and the USSR (Soviet Union) in 1962, during the “Cold War,” when political tensions were high. The attendance over two days was 153,000 to watch the friendly competition. • American football has a history dating back to the late 1800s, emerging from the European game of rugby. Player and coach at Yale Universi ty, Walter Camp, is the “Father of American Football,” recognized for instituting the early rules of the game. • “The Birthplace of Intercollegiate Football,” Rutgers University in New Jersey, held the first inter-collegiate football game in 1869. Rutgers defeated Princeton by two goals. Those players didn’t play in a stadium, but on a field on College Avenue in New Brunswick with a few fans there to see what the game was about. Today, Rutgers has a beautiful stadium that seats 52,454 fans. • Today, many stadiums are named after Continued on page 9

The genome in humans was sequenced in 2004 and “Cinnamon” the cat’s in 2007. Knowing the genetic makeup of each species will help fight disease, help in feeding the best diets and help in extending the best possible quality of life. Genetic screening for healthy pets will soon be a reality. “Genetic Testing” is evolving into choosing which diets and supplements may be needed to prevent diseases and promote health. If a gene was commonly known to cause dementia in older cats and if feeding a specific supplement would forestall its development, then the treatment of choice would be to feed the supplement and cure the disease. Genetic risk factors for disease are being identified and there is hope that many diseases will be treated with individualized diets and changes in lifestyles. “Nutrigenomics” -- is the study of how nutrition affects genes and their expression. The future holds promise that our ‘new’ diets will keep us healthy, longer. A gene ‘promoter’ triggers specific genetic responses for disease BUT eating a specific food or taking a supplement, a change in the environment or reducing excessive exercise could delay or stop the disease from developing. Vitamin B 12, 3-omega fatty acids, vitamins A and D have been shown to be ‘promoters’. Current diets have adequate amounts of most nutrients but in potential disease states ‘hypersupplementation’ may be needed to reverse a disease from forming. Feeding cats, what is the best diet? Mice, birds, rabbits have fed the feline through early evolution to today. Looking at the proportions of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals in their prey diets can give us good start. There are no dehydrated, “dry” foods in nature and the relative lack of water in the feline diet appears to create a ‘harmful’ physiological dehydration in the feline species. Mice and birds are meaty and juicy so the only explanations for dry diet are that they are convenient, lower cost and that they use ‘foreign’ ingredients that are readily available. At the other extreme are the ‘raw diets’ that run the risk of being unbalanced and contaminated. So what is the best diet for domestic felines? Healthy mice and birds! Some good diets are available for cats – talk with your veterinarian about available choices. The perfect human made diet does not exist because nature did not intend for humans to feed cats. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. at least once. The intent is to have you make better contact and not peek too soon to see where the ball is going. But using that tip can create tension and limit your swing. Your head should be free to rotate. In fact, if it swivels slightly away from the target when you take the club back and/or toward the target when you swing down and through the hitting area, your chances of making a smooth and complete will likely improve. Former world no. 1s Annika Sorenstam and David Duval are among several pros whose heads rotate when they swing. Neither of them is even looking at the ball when the club makes contact. And don’t forget that Jack Nicklas used to turn his chin slightly away from the target just before he started his backswing. If it worked for them, it can certainly help you. Keeping your head down might only prevent you from watching a bad shot. This advice is from David Leadbetter.

There’s lots of quartz out there for gemstone enthusiasts! Rose quartz is a pale pink quartz that can range all the way from transparent to translucent often used for Scott McQueen beads, carvings, and architectural purposes. Smoky quartz has a limited market because there is not much demand for brown gemstones. Don’t mistake smoky quartz with smoky topaz. They are different. Tiger's eye quartz has a lovely golden yellow color that reveals a small ray of light on the surface that resembles the feline eye of a tiger. Rock crystal is the transparent, colorless variety of quartz long believed to be a compact form of ice. Many people believe that wearing quartz crystals benefits their health and spiritual well-being. Rutilated quartz and tourmalinated quartz is transparent rock crystal with golden needles of rutile arrayed in patterns inside it. Each pattern is different and some are beautiful! Chalcedonies is quartz formed not of one single crystal but a number of finely grained microcrystals. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. A: Raking leaves can be a tedious task, and gets exhausting when dealing with a large yard with lots of trees. During the fall season, a homeowner could wind up raking the yard at least once a week. Unfortunately, leaving those leaves to pile up will wreak havoc on your lawn. First, the coating of leaves prevents air and sun from reaching grass directly, but lets rainwater trickle down, creating a harsh environment for grass. Second, leaves are filled with alkaline compounds that can damage the grass. These factors make leaves a great mulch ingredient, because you typically put mulch where you don’t want grass or weeds to grow. You don’t want a heavy coating of leaf mulch on your lawn, though. So, you’ve got to clean up those fallen leaves eventually. Here’s a few ideas to make the task somewhat easier. ¥ Pick up the first light coating of leaves while mowing the lawn, with the bag attached. ¥ Borrow or rent a leaf blower to tackle larger areas with a moderate to heavy coating of leaves. Carefully blow the leaves into rough piles around the lawn. ¥ Use your rake to finish a large leaf cleanup job: pile the leaves closer together, or use the rake to shift leaves into a bag or wheelbarrow for disposal elsewhere. ¥ Add leaves to your compost pile. Fall is a favorite time for homeowners who keep compost piles because leaves add bulk to their compost and can help balance nutrients and acidity or alkalinity if used in the right amounts.

We service all major household appliances.

FOOTBALL STADIUMS (continued): corporate sponsors who provide funds for the rights to advertise themselves. One of those is the Carrier Dome at Syracuse University. Built in 1980, it is the only domed stadium in the Northeast. Even though named for Carrier, an air conditioning company, the dome isn’t air conditioned! • The air is thinner (less oxygen) in higher elevations and breathing can be difficult in high energy contests like football. War Memorial Stadium at the University of Wyoming has the highest elevation of any Division I university at 7,770 feet (M?). Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado is even higher with an elevation of 7750 feet. (M?) Falcon Stadium, the home field for the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, another high elevation stadium, at 6621 feet (2018 m) above sea level, is flying high. • The United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, has a unique tradition for its games: a skydiver lands on the field at Michie Stadium holding the football to start the games. • Many college and university teams have other traditions observed in their home stadiums. Some involve songs music, some a motto, and many involve mascots. • When the Tennessee Volunteers and their 100,000 or so fans sing “Rocky Top” in Neyland Stadium, it is a chorus that you will hear in your sleep for a few nights afterward! • “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a song recorded by John Denver in 1971 has been the theme song for West Virginia University since 1972. Denver sang the song at the opening of the “new” Mountaineer Field in 1980. The words and music were written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert and Denver, and at the time none of the trio had actually been to the state.

“Recently, the news has been full of loss and devastation in this beautiful state we all love. My heart goes out to everyone affected by the fires. Because of this, I decided it wouldbe great to share a smile and a laugh through a few light hearted jokes:

Gary Lasater – candidate for RTD District “G” After serving Parker’s Mayor and Councilmember for nearly 17 years, people are asking why am I running for the Regional Transportation District Board seat? I am running because I feel, as many have voiced, that we are NOT being fairly represented by the current incumbent. Our services seem to be eroding though our District is potentially paying a good amount of funds to RTD, proportionately more than other district areas. The ratio of funds to services seems to have a huge imbalance. I would like to represent our entire district to work to make sure our

On the local Parker front I would like to give you my endorsements for Mayor and Town Council. For Mayor, Adele Laurent. She is new to elected office, but not to volunteering in Parker. She brings the life experience maturity the other two candidates don’t have. Being a single mother, a world champion high platform and cliff diver for over 30 years, former small business owner, she brings a well-rounded understanding of our community needs and would represent Parker in the best light. For Council, my three picks are Debbie Lewis, Bill Wright, Joshua Rivero. Debbie and Bill bring maturity that is sorely needed on Council. With David Casiano and I leaving the Council, this create a vacuum of over 26 years on Council and a combined age of 123 years of life experience. Bill and Debbie represent long-term residents and 30 year business experience. Joshua as the owner of Fika Coffee in downtown has proven experience as a business person as well as working to promote the local community.

Q. I’m thinking about piercing my tongue and wearing a tongue barbell. Will that hurt my tongue? A. Yes! Many problems can result from an oral piercing. It takes three to four weeks for an oral piercing to heal – if you’re lucky. Complications can occur during healing. Q. What kind of “complications”? A. Infections are common with oral piercings. Most of the bacteria that live in the mouth originate from the tongue. The tongue is heavily coated with bacteria and minute food particles. This is especially true if one does not brush or scrape his or her tongue as part of their routine oral hygiene. One’s own bacteria can cause infection of the tongue. If the “pierce-er” uses an unsterile needle or instrument on the “pierce-ee”, infection is practically guaranteed. Q. Won’t I just “get over” the infection in time? A. Maybe…..maybe not: Any infection can become serious. According to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), an unsterile piercing needle can cause a serious, even lifethreatening infection, such as HIV (AIDS) or Hepatitis. Swelling of the tongue is common after piercing. A serious bacterial infection of the floor of the mouth known as Ludwig’s Angina can develop. This infection can cause the floor of the mouth to swell rapidly. The swelling, can then become so large that it impairs swallowing and even constrict the airway. In some situations, to save the person’s life, emergency doctors have to pass a breathing tube through the patient’s nose to maintain the persons airway for breathing until the swelling and infection resolves. As soon as the needle passes through the tongue, bacteria enter the bloodstream. Under certain conditions, bacteria in the blood stream enter the heart and cause a serious, life-threatening heart infection, known as Endocarditis. Q. Is there anything else I need to know about oral piercing? A. Yes there is: Tongue piercing jewelry can get in the way of chewing and swallowing, and Please see our ad on page 2 of Tidbits 720-870-9500 10470 S Progress Way #100 Parker, CO 80134

Q: I watched the season premiere of “Grey’s Anatomy” and saw that Mark Sloan died. Did the person who played him die in real life? I noticed at the end they gave a birth year and a death year. -- Wayne M., via e-mail A: Eric Dane, who played the medical drama’s Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan since the show’s second season, is alive and well, unlike his character. He currently is in preproduction on the feature film “Sweet Spot,” which also stars Salma Hayek and Kurt Russell. The film is about a former New York Yankees pitcher past his prime who tries to revive his career in the Mexican Baseball League, and will be released in 2013. *** Q: I am so happy that “Scandal” was renewed and has started its second season. Can you please give me any spoilers for what’s coming up? -- Tina A., Hartford, Conn. A: If you’re familiar with Shonda Rimes’ other shows (“Grey’s Anatomy” and “Private Practice”), you know you’re in for drama, for sure. I spoke with series star Bellamy Young (who plays first lady Mellie Grant), and she gave me a little tease of what to expect this year. “We’ll have government agents gone rogue, college students gone missing and sex scandals. Olivia will get more complicated this season, which is fun to watch because Kerry (Washington) does it so well. And it’s just so human. Mellie will get up to no good at all. But Shonda plays it very close to the vest with the story line. Getting the script for the next episode is a big deal. And we’re all texting each other: ?What page are you on?’ And it’s all so shocking! We all just can’t wait to see what’s next.” *** Q: I really like Sean Bean, especially in “Troy” and “Game of Thrones.” What else can I see him in? -Helen S., Virginia Beach, Va. A: The British thespian, 53, first entered my radar when he played Bond bad guy Alec Trevelyan in 1995’s “GoldenEye.” He’s done tons of stuff before and since, but nowadays he is best known as the doomed Eddard Stark. Last season, he co-starred with Ashley Judd in “Missing,” and in 2010 he played Zeus in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” and will reprise that role in next year’s “Sea of Monsters.” From 2008-2010, Sean played the title character in “Crusoe,” he tried to foil Nicolas Cage’s treasure hunt in 2004’s “National Treasure,” and he played Boromir in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. The list goes on and on. *** Q: I think that Jimmy Kimmel did a bang-up job hosting the Emmy Awards. Any chance he’ll host the next Academy Awards ceremony? -- Bob K., via e-mail A: While Jimmy might have an Oscar-hosting gig in his future, the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony, which will take place Feb. 24, will be hosted by “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

When you add a child to your family, either through birth or adoption, it’s obviously an exciting and joyful time in your life — and it’s also a busy one, as you deal with all the challenges and commitments faced by all parents. However, hectic as your life may be, you’ll still need to think about making some key financial arrangements to accommodate your new child. Here are some suggestions to consider: Get a Social Security number. You’ll want to obtain a Social Security number for your child as soon as possible. Speak with a tax advisor. If you’re adopting a child, you might be eligible for federal income tax credits. Build an emergency fund. Obviously, a new child may mean a variety of new expenses. If you aren’t prepared for these costs, many of which may crop up suddenly, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments. Such a move could slow your progress toward your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. To avoid this potential problem, try to build an emergency fund containing six months’ worth of living expenses. Put the money in a liquid account so you can access it quickly and without penalty. Research options for a special needs child. If you have a special needs child, you may want to explore any available government benefits and consider speaking with an attorney about your legal options. Consider disability insurance. You may want to purchase disability insurance, or review your current policy, to ensure your family’s needs are covered should you become ill or disabled and cannot work for a while. Review your life insurance. It’s essential that you maintain adequate life insurance to cover your family’s future financial needs, including education costs. While your employer may offer you a group policy, it might not be sufficient to keep up with your growing family. There’s no one “formula” for determining the appropriate amount of life insurance, but a professional financial advisor can review your family situation and recommend suitable coverage. Save for college. Given the high costs of higher education, it’s never too soon to start putting away money for college. You may want to consider a tax-advantaged account, such as a 529 plan, which offers high contribution limits and provides you with the flexibility to switch beneficiaries, if necessary. Review/add beneficiary designations. You may want to change or add beneficiaries to your IRA, 401(k), life insurance, annuities and other accounts. Explore a custodial account. You might want to consider a custodial account, such as an UGMA or UTMA, that allows you to transfer assets for the benefit of a child under 21. (Consult with your tax and legal advisors before making this move.)

Of course, you don’t have to take care of all these items at once. But by methodically working your way through this list, you will eventually adjust your overall financial strategy to include your new child — which means you’ll be helping your growing family make progress toward its important goals.
