TIDBITS® GOBBLES WITH THE
TURKEYS by Kathy Wolfe
‘Tis the season, as they say, so this week, Tidbits is wondering just how much you know about the turkey, one of our favorite meals over the holidays. • The U.S. Department of Agriculture tells us that about 45 million turkeys will be cooked in America for Thanksgiving, about 17% of all the turkeys sold throughout the year. Close to 250 million turkeys are raised in the U.S. annually.

• Because domesticated turkeys have been bred to have large breasts for cooking purposes, they are top-heavy and unable to fly. However, wild turkeys can fly as fast as 55 mph (89 km/hr) and they even roost in the treetops at night to avoid predators. Wild birds can also run up to a speed of 25 mph (40 km/hr). The domestic bird will weigh about twice as much as the wild one. turn the page for more!

• The Meleagris gallopavo is the wild turkey from which our domesticated turkey is descended. There are six subspecies of wild turkeys, including the Gallopavo silvestris, or forest turkey, the most numerous of all turkeys, more than five million birds. The turkey is the only poultry native to North America.

TURKEYS (continued): • During the 1930s, excessive hunting brought the wild turkey population down to about 30,000. A wildlife restoration project was instituted, and today, there are an estimated 7 million wild turkeys across the nation. • Are you familiar with all the turkey terms? That flap of skin that hangs over a turkey’s beak is known as a snood. Brightly-colored fleshy bumps on a turkey’s head and throat are called caruncles. Both the snood and caruncles turn bright red when the bird becomes frightened or agitated. The wattle, that flap of skin under the turkey’s chin, also changes to bright scarlet on a male in the midst of mating season. Although we frequently hear males referred to as toms, they are also known as gobblers, because of the distinctive noise they make to announce their presence to females. A baby turkey is known as a poult or a chick, and of course, the female is called a hen. • Speaking of gobbling, in addition to the familiar gobble, a male turkey can make more than 30 different vocal sounds, including purrs, yelps, and kee-kees, distinctive and unique enough to be recognized by his fellow males. A gobble can be heard a mile away. Female turkeys aren’t nearly so vocal, usually making a clicking noise. •
There are obvious differences in the outward appearances between males and females, with the male having a featherless bright red head and a body of red, bronze, and gold feathers. The female’s head is grayish-blue and her plumage is mostly a drab brown with a few feathers on the neck and head for camouflage. The adult male also has a beard, a cluster of feathers on the center of its breast, feathers than can be more than 7 inches (17.8 cm) long.
• Turkey gender can also be determined in a rather unusual way – by observing their droppings. A male’s droppings are spiral-shaped, while a female produces droppings shaped like the letter J. • Turkeys have excellent hearing, able to determine sounds up to a mile away, but oddly enough, have no external ears. They hear through small holes in the head directly behind the eyes. The birds have periscopic vision, with eyes on the sides of the head, able to achieve a 360-degree field of vision.

• The male turkey has sharp bony spikes on the back of its lower legs, used as a method of defense. You can determine a turkey’s age by measuring the length of these spurs. A one-year-old can have spurs of 7/16” (1.1 cm), while two-yearolds’ spurs range from ½” to 15/16” (1.27 cm to 2.4 cm). The spurs on a five-year-old turkey are from 1.5” to 2.25” (3.8 cm to 5.7 cm) in length. • During mating season, the male turkey fluffs out his feathers, fans out his tail feathers, and drags his wings when he walks. This little performance is called strutting.

• When it’s time for the female hen to lay eggs, she’ll lay about 12 eggs at the rate of one per day in just under two weeks. Those eggs will incubate about 28 days before hatching. •
Although turkey is regularly served as a Thanksgiving mainstay, it’s unlikely that the Pilgrims dined on the bird at their first Thanksgiving feast in 1621. This three-day celebration was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims, and written accounts of the menu mention “fowl,” which was probably duck or grouse, but turkey was not listed specifically.

When a Cough is a ‘True’ Cough in a Cat Cats vomit, retch, gag, sneeze, have nasal congestion, trouble breathing, reverse sneeze but rarely do they have a ‘true’ cough. Upper respiratory infections are the most common respiratory signs seen: showing eye discharge, nasal discharge, mouth ulcers, open mouth breathing, decreased appetite and fever. Vomiting and retching related to diet/gastrointestinal illness can be confused with respiratory problems. Mixed signs are common so cats may show many different clinical presentations.

Heartworm Disease is on the rise in Colorado. The dog and the coyote are the reservoir for the infection. The mosquito bites an infected dog/coyote; the mosquito becomes infected; and then it bites another animal (dog, cat, bear, etc.); and the infective larva develops in the host animal; and finally the larva develops into an adult heartworm. Cats usually only have 1-3 worms living in the heart or the vessels of the lung. Diagnosis is made with a combination of blood tests, clinical signs, chest radiographs and chest ultrasounds. Even with this small number of worms many cats to die suddenly. There is no effective treatment once the worms are present except supportive care and the control of secondary sideeffects due to the disease. Prevention is the only way to protect your cat from heartworm disease!

Asthma/Bronchitis Complex is an allergic lung disease that causes constriction of the bronchial tree. Diagnosis in the cat is made by clinical exam, chest x-rays, tracheal wash/cytology and response to therapy. Coughing is the primary clinical sign followed by an expiratory dyspnea, crackles and wheezing. Secondary cigarette smoke is commonly noted in the history of asthmatic patients.

Emeralds are famous for their intense, radiant green color that many believe conveys harmony, love of nature, and the joy of life itself. Innumerable stories are told about this magnificent gem. The Incas and Aztecs of South America long regarded the emerald as a holy gemstone. The Vedas, the holy scriptures of India, say that emeralds promise good luck and enhance well-being. The pharaohs of Egypt exploited mines near the Red Sea in Egypt between 3000 and 2500 BC. The “Cleopatra Mines” of Egypt are now of historical interest only. The emeralds from Zimbabwe are among the oldest gemstones anywhere in the world where they were already growing 2600 million years ago. Today emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, India, Pakistan, Australia, and in the US. Many famous emeralds can be seen in museums and collections. The New York Museum of Natural History exhibits a cup made of pure emerald which belonged to the Emperor Jehangir of the Mughal Empire (Indian subcontinent) in the 1700s.

Treat your lawn to some TLC Once the Halloween treats have been handed out to the ghosts and goblins, make a note that it’s time to give the lawn it’s biggest and final treat of the season. That would be the fall application of fertilizer.
With the mild weather this weekend, it’s a perfect time to fertilize that last time. Here’s what CSU’s turf scientists recommend: Apply a fertilizer that provides 1 lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn. For natural, organic fertilizers, such as dehydrated poultry waste, double the amount. The turf should be green when the fertilizer is applied - and if the soil is not moist, irrigate and wait for a day before applying. Moist soil is what makes the nitrogen dissolve easily. Avoid applying fertilizer to very cold soil or dormant turf as the fertilizer won’t be used efficiently. Another treat for the lawn: mow one more time A late season mowing isn’t just an aesthetic treat for the eye - but a healthy one for the lawn. Turf grass is much more likely to develop mold and other diseases if it goes into dormancy at a taller height. By removing the extra grass length, you are reducing the threat of other problems later on. The landscape BOGO: Do 2 chores in the time of 1 If you use a mulching lawn mower, there’s no need to rake up and remove leaves before mowing. The mulching mower will chew up the leaves which can be left on top of the lawn. These mulched leaves become natural compost for the soil and add nutrients in the process. With leaf mowing, there’s no raking, piling or bagging required. It’s as sustainable for your personal energy as it is for the environment.

After the frost and the demise of all our annuals and edibles, it’s easy to forget the lawn still needs attention. So before you walk away from the yard ‘til the next growing season, remember that the fall application of fertilizer is actually the most important one of the year. That’s the word from the turf experts at Colorado State University.
WHOLE HOUSE SPECIAL! $425 up to 16 windows
They say that the late-season fertilization creates healthier turf before winter, helps develop a strong root system and stimulates turf that will green up earlier in the spring without excessive top growth. Fertilizing early in the spring, on the other hand, will promote unnecessary growth and that means more mowing for you.

Halloween’s OVER, I’ve Thrown Out All That Candy – Now What? Q. Just like you said, I’ve been brushing my child’s teeth three times a day – for 2 (TWENTY) minutes. How long should I keep up that “60 minutes per day” tooth brushing routine? Cindy Rose A. Did I really say “Brush for 20 minutes, three times a day” ? Oops! I checked, and I did say that – and found that “typo” in the last two Tidbits. (Unlike USA’s national debt, that one little extra “zero” probably will make a big difference in compliance!) Here’s the correction - without the extra “zero”: Brush two times daily for 2 MINUTES (and floss just the teeth you want to keep). All of you parents who have been brushing your child’s teeth 20 minutes, three times a Day, or making sure they do, deserve the “Congressional Medal of Honor for Parenting”! Q. Where can I get great information on how to keep my child’s teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime (besides right here in Tidbits, of course) ? A. There’s a great new website recently launched by a coalition of 35 prominent dental organizations, known as the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. It is the first-ever joint children’s oral health campaign with the Ad Council. Media Partners for the Campaign include Sesame Street, Dream Works, Cartoon Network (This is going to be BIG.) Dr. Joe Blaes, editor of Dental Economics Magazine, states: “The new campaign will teach parents and caregivers….. as well as children about oral health and the simple ways they can prevent oral disease….fewer than half of parents (44%) report that their children brush their teeth twice a day. While most parents understand the importance oral health and their children brushing their teeth, they are not aware of the serious consequences of not taking care of their children’s teeth.”

I created Castle “RockStar Fitness” to serve as our town’s hometown personalized and group training center. After more than 20 years as a Master Fitness Trainer in the U.S Army, earning my resident personal trainer certification and positively influencing the lives of men and woman as a personal and group trainer with an athletic club, I am chasing my passion. I have opened a training center for all ages so that I can use my skills and experience to help those in my community achieve their health and fitness goals. I am a firm believer in teamwork and helping you understand how to complete the cycle of weight loss, muscle strength and cardiorespiratory endurance. Our trainers are committed to your goals throughout and beyond your time with us. Aside from being your personal fitness trainer- we serve as your motivator, nutrition counselor and coach. In addition to our individual and partnered services, we offer a variety of small group classes. Swing by for your free fitness assessment and workout during our Grand Opening on December 6th and learn how to treat your achy body, increase your energy levels, and lose weight.
