We’ve all seen it nearly every day of our lives. This week, Tidbits is full of “bet you didn’t know that” facts about the moon. • The moon is 225,745 miles (363,301 km) from Earth. If you were able to plan a trip there, it would be about a two-day trip on a rocket or a 625-hour ride on a 747 jet flying at 400 mph (644 km/hr). If you could drive your car there, it would take 135 days traveling at 70 mph (112 km/hr).

Interesting Stuff
THE MOON (continued): • The average speed at which the moon orbits the Earth is 2,287 mph (3,680 km/hr.) • We only see about 59% of the moon’s surface from Earth. The pattern of the moon’s rotation causes the same side to face Earth at all times. What we frequently call the “dark side” of the moon (that part we can’t see) should really be referred to as the “far side.” It has only been photographed from spacecraft. The surface is covered by a mantle made up of an 825-milethick (1,330 km) layer of iron and magnesiumrich rock known as regolith. It’s been pounded by meteors, asteroids, and comets, which have created countless craters across its expanse. The widest craters are 140 miles (225 km) in diameter and are as deep as 15,000 ft. (4,500 m). There are mountains standing as high as 16,000 ft. (5,000 m). It’s estimated that the moon weighs about 81 quintillion tons (74 sextillion kg). • Although the moon looks round to us, it’s really egg-shaped. As we look at it, the smaller end of the egg is pointed toward us. It appears to be about the same size as the sun, but it’s actually 400 times smaller. Because the moon is 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, the two appear about the same size. The moon is actually moving away from Earth about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) a year. • Gravity on the moon is just 1/6 that of Earth. This means if you weigh 120 lbs. (54.4 kg) on Earth, you weigh only 20 lbs. (9.1 kg) on the moon. And if you don’t feel like dieting, remember that because of gravitational effects, you weigh just a bit less when the moon is directly overhead. • The world first saw close-up TV pictures of the moon’s surface in 1964 when images were sent back by Ranger 7, the first U.S. space probe.

• In May, 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated his goal in an address to Congress of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth” by the end of the 1960s. The first manned spacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968, when Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders circled the moon 10 times before heading back to Earth. • The Apollo 11 crew made history in July, 1969 when they made the first landing. On July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. There are very few Americans unfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong later reported that what he actually said was, “that’s one small step for a man…” The crew spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the surface, with 2 hours and 36 minutes outside the craft, walking on the surface. The footprints of the Apollo 11 crew astronauts will remain for thousands of years, considering there is no wind or adverse weather to disturb them. • The Apollo 11 crew collected lunar rocks weighing 842 lbs. (382 kg.). • A total of 12 men have walked on the moon. No one has done so since December, 1972 when Eugene Cernan of the final manned mission to the moon, Apollo 17, became the last man to set foot on the lunar surface. Apollo 17 was the sixth landing of humans on the moon. • Do you know the difference between waxing and waning? During the phases of the moon’s cycle, when it appears to be getting larger, it’s called waxing, while waning is when it appears to get smaller. Continued on page 5

Cat Q & A
Adapted Feline Astrology
(visit: Angelsastrology.com for a complete interpretation) Gemini: May 22 to June 21). Get ready for the playmate of a lifetime. Feisty and quick, you and your Gemini cat will have an active life. Flying objects, laser pointers, and birds at the bird feeder will fascinate your cat for hours. If you think your cat can read your mind you might be right. These cats are always on the prowl and sensitive to noise – many hate to be around cars. High places are a favorite resting spot for Gemini cats. Many are thin, small and agile with frequent meals. Companionship is important with Gemini cats – human and/or feline are favored but sometimes a dog is a close buddy. Cancer: (June 22 to July 23). Your cat will be a close friend that will follow you everywhere. Cancer cats love of the kitchen and a good fish meal. Feline fishing antics surrounding your Aquarium will give you hours of pleasure. Cancer cats are finicky eaters and will favor more carbohydrates in their diet. Fat cats are common among these felines. These cats are sensitive to your stress and will retreat to a hideaway of safety. They are generally expressive and intuitive so owners need to be aware that these cats will follow your lead.

20 QUESTIONS Going to do about
HEALTH CARE?
You may have heard that starting January 1, 2014, almost everyone will be required to have health insurance as a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as health care reform. The law is designed to help more people get health care coverage. It also lays out certain requirements for all health plans.
How health care reform affects you Because most current health insurance plans do not meet the requirements of the PPACA, you’ll need to choose an early renewal offer from your current carrier or choose a new ACA compliant health plan by December 15, 2013, or you will lose your current health coverage.
Federal financial assistance available Under health care reform, some individuals may qualify for financial assistance. Federal assistance is available only when you purchase a plan through Connect for Health Colorado, the Health Insurance Marketplace. I can help you through this process to determine if you are eligible for financial assistance.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:
VICTORIA WOODHULL
Most folks have never heard of Victoria Woodhull, but she made the pages of history books as the first woman to run for the office of the President of the United States. Let’s learn more about Victoria’s several other achievements. • Born into humble beginnings, Victoria’s parents ran a traveling medicine show, where her mother was a spiritualist and her father, the typical “snake oil salesman.” Victoria and her sister Tennie worked as clairvoyants and fortune tellers in the show. At age 14, Victoria contracted a serious illness and her parents consulted a 28-year-old doctor, Channing Woodhull, who would become Victoria’s husband just two months past her 15th birthday. • It soon became apparent that Dr. Woodhull was an alcoholic, morphine addict, and a womanizer, and Victoria went to work to keep them afloat. After two children, including one who was mentally disabled, Victoria divorced Woodhull 11 years later. • Victoria and Tennie were very successful as spiritual mediums and healers and made the move to New York City to capitalize on this success. Victoria married again, this time to James Blood, a former Union Army colonel in the Civil War, who had also been the first mayor of Lawrence, Kansas. The sisters’ most famous client was railroad millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt. In appreciation for their services, in 1870 Vanderbilt helped them open their own stock brokerage house on Wall Street, and the sisters became the first women stockbrokers in history. The company was immediately successful, patronized by wealthy widows and other women of means.

The Gem Advisor Chrome Diopside
Scott McQueen The only thing ugly about a chrome diopside gem is its name. Chrome diopside? Whoever it was who thought up that name should be sent to live in a cheap costume jewelry manufacturing plant for 5 – 7 years without the possibility of parole! This is not a car polish or a social disease, for crying out loud, it’s a gem that features a rich green color and better yet, an incredibly low price. It may well be one of the most affordable pure rich green gems on the market today! So if your check book is low and you need to impress your loved one…think chrome diopside. Ok, so there is one small drawback: Most chrome diopside gems are small. The larger rarer sizes become so rich in green that they are almost too dark. Ok, so there is yet another small drawback: they are relatively soft, with a hardness of only 5.5. Best you wear them as earrings or as a pendant rather than a ring. But remember the good news: chrome diopside bears a rich green color and is usually available at an affordable price. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. 2 store locations: 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker and 190 S Wilcox in Castle Rock. CAN’T GET ENOUGH...
THE MOON Continued • If we didn’t have the moon, the oceans would have no tides. Tides rise because of the pull of the moon’s gravity. This gravity is strongest on the side of Earth nearest the moon, and it pulls up the water slightly, which is high tide. On the side of Earth farthest from the moon, the gravity is at its weakest, and the water moves a little away from the moon. • What does it take the create an eclipse? These phenomena occur only when the sun, Earth, and moon are all in a straight line and one blocks the light from another. The official term for this configuration of three celestial bodies is syzygy. A solar eclipse will occur during a new moon, when the moon is between the sun and Earth and blocks the sunlight. A lunar eclipse will occur at the time of a full moon, when Earth is between the sun and the moon, and blocks the sun’s light that would normally light up the moon. •
According to folklore, if you see the slim crescent moon over your right shoulder, it’s considered good luck, while seeing it over your left shoulder is unlucky. Legend further states that if you move to a new home during a waning moon, you will never go hungry.

A: While it’s important to have a heating professional check your system at the start of fall or winter, you can handle some maintenance tasks in between that will keep your system in good shape and reduce the number of more expensive repairs you may need later. First, make sure the air filter is changed monthly during heating season. To improve air intake further, vacuum away dust from the outer cabinet door. Vacuum the air registers in the house to remove dust and make sure nothing is blocking them, like furniture or dropped items. Within the unit, clean the blower or fan inside by turning off the heating system completely. Access the fan compartment and clean either the blower or fan blades (depending on your system) with a bottle brush. Using a vacuum with a hose attachment makes picking up the dust bunnies easier. Beyond the heating unit, visually inspect the air ducts and make sure they’re in good shape, not damaged or loose. If a duct is loose where two of them meet, reattach snugly using sheet metal screws. Seal the seam with aluminized tape, pressing out air bubbles, so that air flows smoothly through the duct without leaking. HOME TIP: To add warmth and humidity to your home in winter, leave water in the tub after a bath until it has completely cooled, then drain. Send your questions or home tips to ask@ thisisahammer.com. My new e-book, “101 Best Home Tips,” is available to download on Amazon Kindle! Pick it up it today for just 99 cents.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Nov. 30, 1886, the Folies Bergere in Paris introduces an elaborate revue featuring women in sensational costumes. The highly popular “Place aux Jeunes” established the Folies as the premier nightspot in Paris. The Folies followed the Parisian taste for striptease and quickly gained a reputation for its spectacular nude shows. • On Dec. 1, 1913, Henry Ford installs the first moving assembly line for the mass production of an entire automobile. His innovation reduced the time it took to build a car from more than 12 hours to 2 1/2 hours. • On Nov. 28, 1925, the “Grand Ole Opry,” one of the longest-lived and most popular showcases for country music, begins broadcasting live from Nashville, Tenn. The showcase was originally named the “Barn Dance.” • On Nov. 26, 1931, the first cloverleaf interchange to be built in the United States, at the junction of NJ Rt. 25 (now U.S. Rt. 1) and NJ Rt. 4 (now NJ Rt. 35) in Woodbridge, N.J., is featured on the cover of the Engineering News-Record. (By contrast, a piece on the under-construction Hoover Dam was relegated to the journal’s back pages.) • On Nov. 25, 1952, “The Mousetrap,” a murdermystery written by novelist and playwright Agatha Christie, opens at the Ambassadors Theatre in London. The crowd-pleasing whodunit would go on to become the longest continuously running play in history, with attendance by more than 10 million people to date. • On Nov. 27, 1965, the Pentagon informs President Lyndon Johnson that if Gen. William Westmoreland is to conduct the major sweep operations necessary to destroy enemy forces during the coming year, U.S. troop strength in Vietnam should be increased from 120,000 to 400,000 men. • On Nov. 29, 1975, Silver Convention earns a No. 1 pop hit with “Fly, Robin, Fly.” Suddenly, the world wanted to see the “artists” behind it. The problem: Silver Convention didn’t exist. The two unknown singers who’d cut the record couldn’t be hired again, so two others were pressed into service to appear in their place. • It was noted wit Oscar Wilde who made the following sage observation: “Every saint has a past and every sinner a future.” • It seems that having blond hair was popular in ancient Rome, too. Those not naturally blessed with golden hair, though, had to go through a bit of an ordeal to change their natural color. The treatment of choice was pigeon droppings. Messy, perhaps, but effective. • Those who study such things say that dung beetles use the Milky Way as a navigational aid. • In June 2009, the town of Cave Creek, Ariz., was faced with an electoral tie in the race for a city council seat: Each candidate received exactly 660 votes. According to the state constitution, such ties can be broken by a game of chance. After some discussion, the candidates agreed that they would each pull a card at random out of a deck, and the one with the highest card would be declared the winner of the election. Thomas McGuire drew the six of hearts, then waited while his opponent, Adam Trenk, took his turn. Trenk pulled the king of hearts, securing his city council victory. • You may be surprised to learn that clams can live to be 200 years old. • If you’re of a morbid inclination and have some time to kill in Chicago, head to that city’s Graceland Cemetery. Find the monument known as “Eternal Silence” -- a tall figure in robes -- and look into the statue’s eyes. It’s said that if you do that, you’ll have a vision of your own death. *** Thought for the Day: “I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. PHOTO: Lacey Chabert Q: A few months back, you ran an interview about Scott Wolf, and it got me to wondering what his fellow “Party of Five” alum Lacey Chabert is up to now. -- Janet L., Minneapolis A: Lacey, who played the second youngest of the Salinger children on the hit ‘90s nighttime drama, stars in the Lifetime Movie Network original movie “Non-Stop,” which premieres Friday, Nov. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Lacey plays an executive assistant on a nighttime flight to Zurich who strikes up a romantic encounter with a handsome stranger seated next to her. When she later wakes from a nap, she finds that her bag with her ID, cellphone and laptop are missing -- as is the mysterious stranger. Lacey told me she was delighted to play a different character from what her fans are used to seeing: “My character is at a point in her life when she’s gone through a very devastating breakup. She’s really searching for clarity and just trying to find an anchor in her life again. And there is also this mysterious side about her job, and throughout the story, you start to find out what that is. “I really could empathize with her. I’ve certainly had times in my life where I felt a little lost -- I could relate to that part of the character. But there was a lot about her that I hadn’t seen in characters I’ve played before. I like that she’s in a situation where things are completely out of control, and she’s starting to feel like she’s going completely insane. At the same time, she has to be the sanest character in the film because she’s driving the story. It was definitely a challenge. “ *** Q: Will “The Client List” return for another season, especially now that Jennifer Love Hewitt is pregnant? -- Nina L., via email A: Lifetime has officially canceled the racy nighttime drama after two seasons. Word has it that Jennifer and the execs were at a standoff over how to

handle her real-life pregnancy within the show’s story line. *** Q: I recently caught the encore airing of History’s “The Bible” miniseries, and it made me wonder if there will be more new episodes of the series. -- Jackie W., via email A: NBC recently acquired the rights for the sequel to “The Bible,” called “A.D.: Beyond the Bible,” currently in development. There also is a two-hour theatrical version of the miniseries in the works focusing on the life of Jesus through his Resurrection. The film, called “Son of God,” premieres Feb. 29, 2014. *** Q: Is Drew Barrymore expecting again? Didn’t she just have a baby? -- DeeDee P. in Georgia A: Drew did indeed give birth to daughter Olive in September 2012, stating at the time that she wanted another baby, and soon. She got her wish, as Drew is now pregnant with baby No. 2, and is due late spring/early summer 2014. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Many low to moderate income individuals and families will qualify for a subsidy to assist in paying for their health insurance they obtain through their exchange. Here in Colorado, that exchange is Connect For Health Colorado. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 48% of Americans who buy individual or family health insurance today would be eligible for subsidies. They would receive an average of $5,548, which would cover 66% of the price. Here’s How You Qualify: Anyone earning up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Line ($15,000)will be eligible for a subsidy. That range is up to $45,960 for an individual and $94,200 for a family of four. The lower your income, the larger your subsidy. For instance, those making $17,235 a year will pay no more than 4% of income, or $57 a month, while those with incomes between $34,470 and $45,960 will pay a maximum of 9.5% of income, or $364 a month. The federal government will cover the rest. Anyone earning more than $45,960 would be responsible for the entire tab on the ObamaCare health plan of his/her choice. In addition to premium subsidies, those making less than 250% of the poverty line, or $28,725 for a single person and $58,875 for a family of four, are eligible for extra subsidies to defray out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and copayments. When signing up for Obamacare, enrollees can apply for an advanced subsidy by estimating their income. Payments go directly to the insurer. Their subsidy level is then adjusted once they file a tax return with their actual income for the year. In some cases they may have to repay some of the subsidy if they underestimated or get a refund if they thought they'd earn more than they actually did. Enrollees can also opt to pay the entire premium up front and get a refund at tax time.

At various times, many people may feel frustrated by the performance of their investments. For example, they expect growth, and they don’t get it — or they think the value of their investment won’t fluctuate much, but it does. However, Cindy Rose some of this frustration might be alleviated if investors were more familiar with the nature of their investment vehicles. Specifically, it’s important to keep in mind the difference between long-term and short-term investments. What defines long-term and short-term investments? Long-term investments are those vehicles that you intend to hold for more than one year — in fact, you generally intend to hold them for several years. On the other hand, you usually hold short-term investments for one year or less. You can find several key distinctions between short-term and long-term vehicles. Here are a few to consider:

They carry different expectations. When you purchase an investment that you intend to keep for many years, you may be expecting the investment to increase in value so that you can eventually sell it for a profit. In addition, you may be looking for the investment to provide income. When you purchase a short-term vehicle, you are generally not expecting much in the way of a return or an increase in value. Typically, you purchase short-term investments for the relatively greater degree of principal protection they are designed to provide. They meet different needs at different times of life. You will have different investment needs at different times of your life. When you’re young, and just starting out in your career, you may require a mix of long- and short-term investments. You might need the short-term ones to help pay for a down payment on a home, while the long-term ones could be used to help build resources for your retirement. But later in life, when you’re either closing in on retirement, or you’re already retired, you may have much less need for long-term vehicles, with a corresponding increase in your need for short-term investments. They can satisfy different goals. If you purchase investments that you intend to hold for the long term, you probably have a long-term goal in mind — such as building resources to help pay for a comfortable retirement or leaving a legacy. On the other hand, a short-term investment would be more appropriate if you know that you will need a certain amount of money at a certain time — perhaps to purchase a car or to fund a vacation. They carry different risks. All investments carry some type of risk. One of the biggest risks associated with long-term investments is volatility, the fluctuations in the financial markets that can cause investments to lose value. On the other hand, short-term investment vehicles may be subject to purchasing power risk — the risk that your investment’s return will not keep up with inflation. As an investor, you’ll probably need a mix of longterm and short-term vehicles. By knowing the differences between these two categories, you should have a good idea of what to expect from your investments — and this knowledge can help you make those choices that are right for you.

The Hunting Trip The guys were all at deer hunting camp. No one wanted to room with Bob because he snored so badly. They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they agreed to take turns. The first guy slept with Bob and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you?" He said, "Bob snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."

The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful!" He said, "Man, that Bob shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night." The third night was Fred's turn. Fred was a tanned, older cowboy -- a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "Good morning!" he said. They couldn't believe it. They said, "Man, what happened?" He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Bob into bed, patted him on the butt, and kissed him good night. Bob sat up and watched me all night." With age comes wisdom. There are some advantages to growing older.
