With the holiday season upon us, you have probably already had some sightings of Santa Claus and maybe even his reindeer. This Tidbits scopes out some interesting antler information. • Antlers are the bony growths that sit atop the heads of more than 60 kinds of deer, including moose, elk, reindeer and caribou. All of these animals are hoofed ruminants of the Cervidae family. Ruminants include cows, sheep, goats and giraffes and all have four-part stomachs. • Both male and female caribou and reindeer grow antlers. But only male deer, moose and elk have antlers. They use them as weapons to fight for herd leadership or for a female mate. • Antlers are true marvels of nature. All deer grow a new pair of antlers every year from the time they are a year old. The rate at which they regenerate, an inch (2.5 cm) or more per day, makes them the fastest growing formation in the animal kingdom. Conversely, the degeneration of the bond between the antler and the pedicle, the bony platform above the frontal bone of the skull on which antlers grow, is the fastest deterioration of tissue in the animal kingdom. This degeneration of tissue causes the antlers to loosen and fall off in complete sets. turn the page for more!

ANTLERS (continued): • Pedicles appear on young deer during their first year of life, appearing as small bumps or knobs. Each year when new antlers grow, the antlers get larger and longer, with more “branches.” You can tell a deer’s age by counting his branches.

• After three or four months of growth, antlers can reach a span of 7 feet (2 m) and a weight of more than 45 pounds (20 kg). Antlers serve as a sort of “badge of courage.” The animal with the biggest antlers, or rack, is usually the leader of the herd. Deer of all types use their antlers to fight and show dominance. When the antlers are in their time of quick growth, testosterone is at its highest levels.

1221 Caprice Drive Castle Rock, CO 80109

• Antlers are not hollow like the horns of cows and other animals. Horns are made of tubular filaments of keratin, which is what human hair and nails are made of. Only the rhinoceros has solid horns. Horns, unlike antlers, do not regenerate each year. They grow throughout an animal’s life, and if they are broken, they do not reform. Most animal horns have only one point. The pronghorn antelope is the exception with two points. Pronghorns also are different in that they shed their horns.

• Antlers are made of a honeycombed bone-like tissue. They go through a time when they are covered with a thin skin of fine hairs called velvet. The velvet contains an extensive capillary (vein) network. If you were to touch growing antlers on a live deer, they would feel warm from the high level of blood flow. The antlers harden over time during the growth season, and the cartilage in the antlers becomes bone. Antlers start hardening at the base and the process continues rather quickly to the tip until they are completely hard.

Concrete Mike 303.840.7347 Cell: 303.902.1503 Office:

• When the velvet dries and hardens, the antlers have reached their full size. Deer rub and polish them against trees to keep them sharp and shiny and also rub trees when it is time for the antlers to shed. The antlers do not always fall off together. Sometimes one side will fall off, and the other side may fall off a day or so later.

• When antlers are almost fully grown, during the heat of the summer, they serve an unusual purpose. With the large amount of blood running through them, the antlers “throw off” some of a deer’s body heat. How’s that for built-in air conditioning? Of all of the types of deer though, remember that the only females that grow antlers are caribou and reindeer. So, the poor females of the other types of deer don’t have air conditioning! • Many deer shed their antlers in about the same locations (called “antler sheds”) each year, and many hunters and artists search for the shed antlers. The internet is an amazing source of information and can either solve problems or make things worse. Whenever you do a medical search try to find medical peer reviewed sites that are updated constantly. The answer usually can be found on the internet . . . but which answer is right? There is a lot of junk and pseudo-science that seems plausible but is ‘dead’ wrong. Be sure to review many sites to get a general consensus before making a decision. The doctors at Cat Specialist use searches on specific medical sites to find new treatments, validate current treatment plans or consult with colleagues on your cat’s medical condition. The educational value of the internet is amazing if it is used right. Many courses, case consultations, research topics, new procedures and almost any area of curiosity can be searched on the internet. Currently the doctors at Cat Specialist are looking into a novel treatment to resolve the secondary signs in diabetes. A multi-species search of materials has provided an amazing amount of materials and many new ideas. So, as a doctor, I encourage my client to use the internet wisely. Many of the articles they search are valid but some are not. Don’t be afraid to ask our medical staff questions because we want the very best health care for your cat. Remember, Dr. Google knows everything but it cannot tell right from wrong! Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. CAN’T GET ENOUGH...

What Is Zoonosis and Why You Should Care? Zoonosis refers to a parasite or other disease, like rabies, that can be passed from animals to humans. Members of your family can unknowingly pick up a zoonotic disease at the park, on a sidewalk, or even in their own backyard. Children are especially vulnerable to zoonotic disease, mostly because children play outside and sometimes have a tendency to put objects in their mouths. Cat Specialist takes parasites and zoonotic disease transmission very seriously. We STRONGLY recommend annual parasite testing and a monthly prevention program. Please call our hospital to learn more how we can protect your family and cat from zoonotic diseases.

303-917-4489 www.aidaweber.com ANTLERS (continued): permitted in most areas. However, some states have enacted shed-hunting laws that only allow antlers to be gathered in certain areas at specific times, with large fines and even jail time as the penalties for those who break these laws. • Shed antler collecting is quite popular in the National Elk Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Jackson District Boy Scouts are issued a special permit one Saturday each spring to join the refuge staff in gathering elk antlers. The Scouts help sort, weigh, tag, bundle and sell the antlers at a public auction held in the Jackson Town Square each May. • Jackson (the area is called Jackson Hole) has four elk-antler arches at the corners of Town Square Park in the center of town. The arches, first erected by the Rotary Club of Jackson in the 1960s, are made of antlers gathered from the Elk Refuge. Each arch, made from about 2,000 antlers, weighs 7,000-10,000 pounds (3,175-4,500 kg). Recently, the Rotary Club auctioned off the old arches and replaced them with new ones. Millions of tourists from around the world have had photos taken under the famous Jackson antler arches. • Many antlers are used for art and home decor. Even if you aren’t interested in having a rack hanging in your living room, there are other antler creations that are especially appropriate for rustic cabins. Antlers are used to make chandeliers, lamps, tables, drawer pulls, doorknobs and more. Since antlers are shed every year, they are a great way to accent a space without harming nature. • When deer shed their antlers in late fall and winter, they often become food for small forest animals, especially rodents. Antlers have valuable calcium, salt and other nutrients that are important for the small critters’ survival. • There are several towns in North America that are named Antler or Antlers. Antlers, Oklahoma, was so named because someone nailed a rack of antlers on a tree marking a nearby stream in the 1800s. Antler, North Dakota, was probably named after Antler Creek, which branches out like antlers. In 1905, when it was incorporated, the town had 520 people; in the 2010 census, it had 27. Some other “antler” towns are Antler, Saskatchewan; Antlers, Virginia; and Antler, Missouri.

Scott McQueen The only thing ugly about a chrome diopside gem is its name. Chrome diopside? Whoever it was who thought up that name should be sent to live in a cheap costume jewelry manufacturing plant for 5 – 7 years without the possibility of parole! This is not a car polish or a social disease, for crying out loud, it’s a gem that features a rich green color and better yet, an incredibly low price. It may well be one of the most affordable pure rich green gems on the market today! So if your check book is low and you need to impress your loved one…think chrome diopside. Ok, so there is one small drawback: Most chrome diopside gems are small. The larger rarer sizes become so rich in green that they are almost too dark. Ok, so there is yet another small drawback: they are relatively soft, with a hardness of only 5.5. Best you wear them as earrings or as a pendant rather than a ring. But remember the good news: chrome diopside bears a rich green color and is usually available at an affordable price. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky PHOTO: Daniela Ruah Q: I am loving the second season of my favorite show, “The Walking Dead,” on AMC. I know this might be a little early, but will it return Cindy Rose for another season? -- Chad G., via e-mail A: Normally, this would be a bit early for renewal news, but since the show’s return at the end of October, its ratings have been through the roof. Season two ratings have eclipsed the stellar ratings (especially by cable standards) of the first season, so AMC has already renewed it for a third season. “The Walking Dead” depicts the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse following a group of survivors outside Atlanta, starring Andrew Lincoln, Jon Bernthal and Sarah Wayne Callies. *** Q: I was sad to read in your column that “Spartacus” star Andy Whitfield had passed away. Will the production of the show continue after his death? -- Hallie E., Akron, Ohio A: In March 2010, Andy was diagnosed with nonHodgkin lymphoma. Production on season two was delayed so he could be treated. Unfortunately, his cancer returned, and he dropped out of the series and was replaced by Liam McIntyre. Andy passed away at age 39 this past September. Season two, with Liam as Spartacus, will return to Starz on Jan. 27, with the network already giving the green light for a third season to begin production in early 2012. *** Q: I have noticed the actress who plays Kensi on “NCIS: Los Angeles” appears to have two different colored eyes. Does she, or am I just seeing things? I think she plays a good strong female part and would like to see her in more shows or movies. -Mary B., Virginia Beach, Va. A: Daniela Ruah, who has played Kensi Blye since the show’s premiere in 2009, has a birthmark in her right eye, making it appear almost completely black, with her left eye being hazel. You’ll get to see more of Daniela soon, as she co-stars in the feature film “Red Tails” with Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bryan Cranston. She also is rumored to be starring in the upcoming “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” with Bruce Campbell. *** UPDATE: Hot on the heels of the news that Lifetime picked up “America’s Most Wanted” after it was canceled by Fox comes the news of its premiere date. The 20-episode 25th season of the crime-fighting reality show will premiere on Dec. 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The show’s passionate host, John Walsh, said of the return: “I am excited to be back in the saddle and working with Lifetime. We are the court of last resort, and with the show getting back to our weekly airing, we’ll have the capability of getting more fugitives off the streets and behind bars where they belong. We hope our observant fans continue the mission with us, on our new night -- Friday -- and keep our capture number climbing while helping those crime victims who need us.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Yes. Floss removes plaque and debris that sticks to teeth and gums in between teeth, polishes tooth surfaces, and controls bad breath. Plaque is a sticky layer of material containing bacteria that accumulates on teeth, including places where toothbrushes can't reach. This can lead to gum disease. By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chance of keeping them for a lifetime and decrease the chance of getting gum disease.

Why should I floss? Floss removes plaque and debris that adhere Holly Simon to teeth and gums in between teeth, polishes tooth surfaces and controls bad breath. By flossing your teeth daily, you increase the chances of keeping your teeth a lifetime and decrease your chance of having periodontal (gum) disease and tooth decay. Flossing is the single most important weapon against plaque, perhaps more important than the toothbrush. A toothbrush cleans the tops and sides of your teeth. Dental floss cleans between them. Some people use waterpicks, but floss is the best choice. Many people just don't spend enough time flossing and many have never been taught to floss properly. Some people buy investments here and there, now and then. Others open an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), put some money in it, and then forCindy Rose get about it. But this type of haphazard investment behavior can lead to haphazard results. On the other hand, you’ve got five good reasons for creating and following a comprehensive, long-term investment strategy. Reason No. 1: You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. For most people, building resources for retirement is the most powerful reason to invest. As a key part of your investment strategy, you’ll want to consider investments that have growth potential. The proportion of your portfolio devoted to these growth investments should be based on your individual risk tolerance and time horizon. And, as you move much closer to your actual retirement date, you may decide to shift some — but certainly not all — of your portfolio from growth-oriented vehicles to those investments that can provide a reliable income stream and incur less volatility. Reason No. 2: You need to stay ahead of inflation. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced relatively low inflation, but over time, even a low inflation rate can dramatically erode the value of your savings and investments. That's why you may want to consider investments that provide the potential for rising income. Reason No. 3: You need to help manage the unexpected. You can’t predict what life will hold in store for you. To cope with unexpected costs, such as a major car repair or a new furnace, you’ll need to create an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses so that you won’t be forced to dip into your long-term investments. And to deal with other major uncertainties of life, you’ll need adequate life and disability insurance. Reason No. 4: You need resources for major life events. Your retirement may eventually require the bulk of your financial resources — but it’s not the only milestone for which you’ll need to save and invest. You may need a down payment on a house, or you may someday even want to purchase a vacation home. And if you have children or grandchildren, you may want to help them pay for college. Reason No. 5: You’ll want to keep in mind investment-related taxes. Taxes, like inflation, can eat into your investment returns. You’ll need to evaluate whether you can benefit from tax-advantaged investments and retirement accounts, such as traditional or Roth IRAs. So there you have it: five good reasons to adhere to a unified investment strategy that’s tailored to your situation. This type of “blueprint” may not sound glamorous, and it’s certainly not a “get rich quick” formula, but it will help you stay on track toward your important financial goals. Searching for the Purpose of Your Life?

Ryan Harris

Jesus is speaking here…. John 13:34-35 (KJV) A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. So many church people have missed this right here, what is our greatest witness? That we give tons of money, that we volunteer for everything, that we sing in the choir, that we help with the children and with the youth, that we have every CD and every book, and we watch every Christian TV program, that we have the latest Christian bumper sticker on our car? No, tell me what the greatest evidence to the world around about us is? It is our love, one for another. All those other things are good, don’t get me wrong, but… the one witness that the world cannot refute, cannot argue against, cannot counter is our love for each other. Our greatest witness, did ya hear me? There is nothing more powerful, more influential, more convincing to the people outside the church walls, than your love for each other. This right here is THE NT commandment, us loving each other. And of course how many know that conversely, the enemy is going to try and do everything in his power to see that this does not happen by trying to cause strife and discord in the body. Because if he can….then our witness is ruined, do you see this? Strife in the church, strife in the home, strife in a marriage relationship, is the manifest presence of the enemy. James tell us that where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. Jesus is talking directly to His disciples and telling them that they are, that we are to love our fellow believers. That is one of the reasons that my heart grieves so much when someone in the church decides it is their job or their duty to make public and air to the world, what they think to be the error of another pastor, or another preacher, or another congregation. Who made them judge and jury? Who told them they have all the answers? Who told them this is their job to air the churches dirty laundry? I can tell you who it is, anyone know? They think they are being so high and mighty when in fact they are cooperating and being used by the enemy himself. That’s why we are told not to judge, because when we judge, the Bible tells us that we are guilty of the same exact thing, and you can clearly see that is this example. No, what did Jesus tell us, what command did Jesus give to us?... John 13:34-35 (KJV) A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

First of all, be the best at what you do. This is the first and most important step to take to ensure your survival. You are in business to meet some kind of need that exists in your community - make sure you are the very best at what you do. Excellence is always worth the effort. It’s easy to be mediocre; it’s easy to walk on flat ground. But the way of excellence demands something extra, something that comes from inside you. Something that causes you to try a little harder, work a little longer, study a little more, practice another hour. Excellence is preceded by sweat but followed by fortune. Take a critical look at your business. Walk through your store or office and look around. What does it look like, sound like, smell like, or feel like? Is it inviting, clean, friendly, exciting, professional? If your place of business is dull, dirty and unfriendly, do something about it. Also look critically at the skill level with which you deal with your customers. Are your people properly trained? How can YOU improve what YOU do each day? In a tough economy only the best survive – so seek excellence, be the best at what you do. Second, talk to your customers. Do you want to know what’s right or wrong with your business? Ask your customers. Have you noticed the restaurant that gives the best service and highest quality food usually has someone walking around the place talking to customers and checking on the quality of food and service being offered? Your customers are the best business consultants you can hire and are available to you at no cost, so talk to them. Ask questions such as, “What can we do to improve the service we provide you?” “What products or services do we need to add?” “Why do you do business with us instead of our competition?” Ask for opinions and suggestions about every aspect of your business. You’ll be surprised at how helpful people will be if you ask them. When you do this, you open doors of communication, you demonstrate a sincere interest in your customer, and you strengthen your business relationships. Third, don’t discount. Price fairly your products or services in the first place. Then work hard to meet customer needs, and you may never have to discount. Yes, I know it is very easy to rationalize discounting in a down economy. You may want to argue, “It helps drive business in the door.” Back in the 1990’s McDonalds and Burger King were in a price war. They continually discounted their burgers and thus trained their customers to never pay full price. Notice they don’t do that much anymore. If you need to lower your prices to make your products or services more affordable or to generate volume, go ahead and lower them but do so prudently and gradually. Be slow to offer twofers or BoGos or huge discounts that steal your profits and train your customers to say, “We’ll wait until their coupon comes out before we buy.” Remember, price is an indicator of value, and even in tough times people want value. The ideal price for your products or services cannot be determined simply by looking at what your competitor charges. First, determine the true value of what you do for your customers; then ask what your customers are willing or able to pay and price accordingly but always price profitably. It is better to have one customer and make a profit than ten customers and break even.
