The Neatest Little Paper Ever Read!®
HANDCRAFTED
THINK POSITIVE!
by Kathy Wolfe During this time of year as we focus on being thankful, Tidbits urges readers to take a few moments to improve their emotional well-being and happiness by thinking positive!
FOR YOU.
• What makes us happy? Psychologists suggest that each person has a happiness “set point,” which is a personal tendency to be very happy, somewhat happy, or not at all happy. About 50% of the explanation for a person’s set point is determined by genetic make-up, which helps to explain why some folks just seem to be naturally happier than others! It also helps explain why long-term levels of happiness appear to be resistant to many significant life events, both good and bad. Lottery winners initially feel “overjoyed” and people who have experienced a negative life event, such as a job loss or death of a loved one, feel “sorrowful,” But most of these individuals eventually settle back to their set point. Research confirms that personal circumstances, such as level of wealth and where we live, account for a measly 10% of happiness.

Tidbits® of Douglas & Elbert Counties For Advertising Call Tim (303)994-9683 Interesting Stuff THINK POSITIVE! (continued): toward feeling confident, optimistic, and energetic, they have a positive perception of themselves, and others find them more likable. Happier folks seem to perform better in job interviews and secure better positions as a result. They also tend to have less absenteeism at work. • Level of happiness also affects an individual’s health. Data indicates that happier people have lower levels of hypertension and lower blood pressure. Those who use humor to cope with difficulties have stronger immune systems, and are less likely to get sick. They have fewer doctor visits, use less medication, and are much less likely to experience substance abuse. • Do you think you’d be happier if you just had more money? Not so, say researchers! Income actually has a weak effect on levels of happiness. In the workplace, employees seem to gain more satisfaction from their rank, position, and sense of achievement than they do from their pay. Surprisingly, spending money on others – as little as $5 a day – creates a boost in happiness levels. • Wondering what you can do to increase your happiness level? Since 40% of happiness is subject to self-control, a person’s deliberate choices and intentional activities can amp up cheerfulness and contentment. High-quality social relationships contribute to life satisfaction, and research indicates that married people are generally happier than single ones. Socializing with cheerful people increases the likelihood of being happier.

Quality of Life......Insurance?
• Think happy thoughts! The average woman has 60,000 thoughts a day – can you believe that 48,000 of them are negative? Avoiding “negative self-talk” can improve attitude and enhance happiness. Rather than saying, “I’m not good at this,” try, “What can I do to get better at this?” Substitute “That’s too difficult,” with “I’m going to give it a try.” Replacing negative thoughts with positive ones allows you to focus on all that is good in life. Keeping a journal listing three things that went well each day produces satisfaction and contentment as well.
Do you have it?
• Having an “attitude of gratitude” is one of the best ways to possess emotional well-being. Counting your blessings causes you to consider all that is valuable in your life. Gratitude during the bad times actually helps you cope with and adjust to adversity, helping you bounce back to that happiness set point. Taking stock of all you have and recalling contributions others have made for you cause you to be more likely to help others and be less materialistic and envious of others, as well as alleviating bitterness.

Tips for a Happy Indoor Cat Most kittens that are kept indoors have little desire to venture outside as cats. Cats are territorial and want a safe haven – this can be your home. There are some cats that crave the wildlife adventure and this trait will be hard to change. Make sure your indoor cat is microchipped so if he/she wanders outside the chances of returning home will be greatly increased. Providing a safe indoor/outdoor safe haven is possible and desirable if your cat has the hunting spirit. o Provide a tasty, balanced diet of canned and some free choice dry food. Do not over-feed your cat because that will lead to many chronic diseases – obesity, diabetes, degenerative joint disease, internal organ dysfunctions, etc. o Toys, play and exercise are critical in relieving boredom, creating good muscle tone, and just having fun. Playing with your cat will also be a comic relief for you. Great Kitty Toys: Kitty Teaser, Da Bird, Catnip Cigars/Bananas, Feathers, etc.. o Provide interest and a safe outside “Kitty TV” by installing window perches for bird & squirrel watching, installing a screened-in porch or atrium, and/or having supervised visits out on the deck with a harness and leash. o Install or modify vertical perches around the house. Cats are the prime predators and want a high view. Many owners wonder why cats want to be on kitchen counters versus the floor – cats are hunters and always want to be on the ‘high ground’. o Grooming your cat can be very pleasurable for kitty and owner. If you start early in life most cats like brushing – a few don’t and will let you know. o Custom cat furniture is always a hit with indoor cats. Cats easily distinguish their furniture from yours. Playing, gymnastics, and climbing bring smiles to owners and the cats get much needed exercise. Cats need to scratch, stretch, and climb to stay in shape.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver ¥ It was revered civil-rights leader Mohandas Gandhi who made the following sage observation: “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.” ¥ If you’re afraid of rats and mice, you might not want to read the following tidbit: Those who study such things say that 60 percent of all the mammals on earth are rodents. ¥ Athletes playing baseball on steroids have frequently been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mistaken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in California.

Scott McQueen The only thing ugly about a chrome diopside gem is its name. Chrome diopside? Whoever it was who thought up that name should be sent to live in a cheap costume jewelry manufacturing plant for 5 – 7 years without the possibility of parole! This is not a car polish or a social disease, for crying out loud, it’s a gem that features a rich green color and better yet, an incredibly low price. It may well be one of the most affordable pure rich green gems on the market today! So if your check book is low and you need to impress your loved one…think chrome diopside. Ok, so there is one small drawback: Most chrome diopside gems are small. The larger rarer sizes become so rich in green that they are almost too dark. Ok, so there is yet another small drawback: they are relatively soft, with a hardness of only 5.5. Best you wear them as earrings or as a pendant rather than a ring. But remember the good news: chrome diopside bears a rich green color and is usually available at an affordable price.

A: Linseed oil is a natural oil made from flaxseed that has long been used as a wood preservative and protectant (along with other uses such as an additive to paint). While other treatments are available to protect your garden and lawn tools’ wooden handles, it’s good to know about this treatment and how you should use it. First and foremost, know that there are two types of linseed oil for DIY applications: raw and boiled. Raw linseed oil has been pressed from the flax seeds and left untreated -not heated or had any chemicals added to it. Boiled linseed oil has either been heat-treated (not boiled, despite its name) or had chemicals added to it for specific reasons. Raw linseed oil is very slow drying (we’re talking weeks or months here) and can stay tacky for a long time. That makes it great for certain applications where slow drying is preferable. For tool handles, that’s not preferable (or enjoyable). Boiled linseed oil dries faster, but keep in mind that most brands are treated with certain chemicals to get it to do so. If you’re determined to use an “all-natural” product to treat wood handles, be aware of this when purchasing this type of linseed oil. An important caveat when using linseed oil, either raw or boiled, is that it is considered a fire hazard. Because oxidation is what causes the oil to dry, in certain circumstances -- like piling together a bunch of linseed oil-soaked rags -- the oil can ignite. Don’t put oil-soaked cloth through the washer and dryer cycle at all: hand-wash them with soap and water and hang them up to dry, and don’t discard several rags at once. To treat wooden handles, apply a single very light coat of boiled linseed oil. Don’t apply linseed oil to the metal parts. To protect those, you can apply a light coat of all-purpose oil. For metal parts that contact the wooden handles, use a protectant that won’t damage wood. If your hardware store doesn’t have a product for this, look for a woodworking store in your area or online. Store your wooden-handled tools in a dry location, protected from sunlight and temperature extremes. Don’t pile them together. Ideally, hang them up on a pegboard or place on a shelf side by side so that each tool gets even airflow and moisture doesn’t build up between them. HOME TIP: Sharpen tool blades and treat with a protectant prior to storing, so they’ll be ready to use immediately when spring comes around. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

THINK POSITIVE (continued): regulating your moods. • Letting go of offenses, anger, and resentment is a surefire way to be happier and healthier. Brooding and obsessing over wrongs done to you and refusing to forgive takes its toll on your happiness levels as well as your physical health. • Don’t worry, be happy! Worriers experience muscle tension, agitation, irritability, sleep problems, difficulty with concentration, and an inability to relax. They spend much of their time trying to predict the future, and worrying about all that could go wrong. Much of the problem involves trying to solve issues that are not solvable. As Mark Twain said, “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” • Increase your positive outlook with random acts of kindness. Research has established that these acts induce positive thoughts and can alleviate negative feelings. It seems that individuals get a strong sense that they’re doing something that matters, and subsequently, mood is enhanced. • What about age? Studies have determined that people in their mid- to late-50s are happier, worry less, and have less stress than young adults in their 20s. Part of that finding may be that older people have learned how to control their emotions over the years. • Positive mindsets can be elevated by visualizing your “best possible self.” This involves imagining success at your life goals, realization of your life dreams, and achievement of your best potential, followed up with using this to guide your current decisions. • Practice optimism! Happy folks look at the bright side of each negative situation and find the silver lining in every black cloud. • Unhappy people watch 30% more TV. Happier ones are out socializing, exercising, reading, volunteering, or attending religious services. And along that line, studies show that spiritual and religious people are happier and healthier than others. • Regular vigorous exercise reduces stress and contributes to great levels of fulfillment. Joggers are 70% less likely to have a high level of stress and dissatisfaction with life. Just 17 to 34 minutes per day produces a significant difference. Need more good news? Exercise also contributes to lasting cognitive functioning in old age.

There are two distinct options for consumers through bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. While either option can lead to a forgiveness of dischargeable debts, the differences between the two chapters are significant. A Chapter 7 is considered a straight bankruptcy. Generally it takes approximately 4 to 6 months from the date a case is filed until the time when the anticipated Order discharging qualifying debts enters. Chapter 13, on the other hand, is a repayment plan. The minimum duration for a plan is 3 years and the maximum is 5 years. Once payments are completed, a discharge order can enter. The repayment plan can be a viable tool for addressing mortgage arrears, tax liability, vehicle loans, and many other areas of concern. For either Chapter, an appearance at a Meeting of Creditors is required. The Meeting is automatically scheduled Cindy Rose and typically takes place about a month, to a month and a half, after the case is filed and typically lasts about 5 to 15 minutes. Thanksgiving is a wonderful time – to be with family and friends and reflect on the blessings of our lives. It is uniquely an American holiday that originated with the founding of our country. Thanksgiving is THE special day of the year set aside for us all to stop and thank God for all He provides to us. As a dentist I am thankful for the advances in dental care over the history of civilization. Historically, it just hasn’t been that long ago that we didn’t have toothbrushes, mouth rinses, esthetic replacements of missing teeth, and yes, even floss! Here are a few dental things that I’m thankful for: The Toothbrush: Ancient peoples used small sticks or twigs, mashed and softened on one end, to clean their teeth. The Chinese invented the first bristle toothbrush, which came to Europe in the 1600’s, and to America during colonial times. In 1880 the first electric brush hit the market. It wasn’t very effective, and the idea died out for several decades. Then just after World War II, the Swiss developed the first effective electric toothbrush, which was introduced into the United States in 1960. Toothpaste had its earliest forms in ancient times, when ground shells, powdered fruit, talc, honey, and dried flowers were mixed together to make a tooth cleaning paste. Less tasty ingredients included various forms of mice, rabbit heads, lizard livers, and urine concocted as toothpastes. I rather doubt that such “toothpastes” had that “minty” taste we enjoy today. Some “toothpastes” were so corrosive that they dissolved tooth enamel. Toothpastes in the 1800’s included soap and chalk. The first collapsible tube appeared in 1892. “Crest” brand toothpaste with fluoride to actually help prevent cavities was introduced in 1956. Anesthetic made painless extractions possible in the 1830’s. In primitive times, teeth were extracted with a well-placed chisel and a hard blow from a mallet - ouch! Centuries later, the Greeks and Romans abandoned the mallet and chisel and developed extraction forceps. Chinese dentists developed very strong fingers for extracting teeth with their “bare fingers” by practicing removing wooden pegs driven into a board. Cocaine was used just prior to the 1900’s as a Local Anesthetic for “Feeling No Pain” dentistry (or anything else!) – until it’s addictive properties became evident. In 1905 “Novocain”, became available, and “Painless Dentistry” became possible. Today’s local anesthetics are much more effective, and do not have the allergic effects of Novocain. Laughing Gas, professionally known as Nitrous Oxide – Oxygen Conscious Sedation was first “experimental” in the 1790’s, due to its pain-inhibiting effects. It became known as “laughing gas” when used at high concentrations, because of its most famous side effect. In the late 1800’s, it was combined with oxygen, and the combination became very popular for use in surgical procedures. These are just a few of my favorite things I’m thankful for - What’s yours? Please send in your questions. You can Ask the Dentist by calling Dr. Burgner at 720-870-9500, or consult the website: www.ParkerLumineers.com Dr Burgner has served on the Fellowship Examination Committee of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and received national recognition awards from that 30,000 member organizaation. He has also been recognized in the local magazine 5280. He practices General Family and Cosmetic Dentistry in Parker, Colorado.

CELEBRITY EXTRA By Cindy Elavsky PHOTO: Tara Summers Q: I am a big fan of “Sons of Anarchy,” and I was wondering who the pretty blonde is? She was on a couple of episodes and played Karen. I know I’ve seen her on something else prior to this. -- Geri R., via e-mail A: Tara Summers, who turns 33 in December, plays Dr. Karen Dunhill on FX’s rough-and-tumble, motorcyclefilled crime drama. Tara is a TV and film vet who’s been in lots of series and feature film, including “Alfie,” “Boston Legal,” “Dirt,” “Factory Girl,” “Damages” and “Ringer.” You can see her this winter in the feature film “Hitchcock,” which stars Anthony Hopkins (as Alfred Hitchcock) and Helen Mirren (as his wife, Alma Reville), with Tara playing Rita Riggs. Tara told me what it was like working with the two legendary actors: “Helen Mirren ... it’s really like her movie. She’s extraordinary. It focuses on the love story between Hitchcock and his wife, and how she was the silent partner in the operation. His wife had a lot more to do with it than we will ever know. And Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, and he was so generous and so kind. He’s always in a good mood, and just so amazing to work with and to watch.” *** Q: My friend told me that the CW is remaking “Sex and the City.” Is that true? If so, why? It was great as it was on HBO. -- Penny W., Seattle A: The CW is not remaking the hit HBO series, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Rather, they bought the rights to the prequel, “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book written by “Sex” author Candace Bushnell. “The Carrie Diaries” -- set in the 1980s -- chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s (played by AnnaSophia Robb) coming-of-age as she navigates her senior year of high school and discovers the glittering lights of Manhattan, and lots of shoes. “The Carrie Diaries” premieres on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c, followed by “90210,” which moves to 9/8c. *** Q: I was a big fan of “The Cosby Show,” and I wondered whatever happened to the actor who played Rudy’s friend, Stanley, on the show. -- Justin W., via e-mail A: Merlin Santana, who went on to play Ohagi on “Moesha” and Romeo on “The Steve Harvey Show,” died on 2002 at the age of 26. Tragically, he was falsely accused of attempted rape of 15-year-old Monique King, so her boyfriend, Brandon Bynes, shot Merlin six times, killing him. Brandon received three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in prison, while Monique received eight years in juvenile custody. *** Q: When will “Cougar Town” be back? -- Jennifer T., Tampa A: TBS has announced that “Cougar Town” will return for a 15-episode fourth season beginning Tuesday, Jan. 8. So raise a glass (of red wine, of course) to the return of your favorite cul-de-sac gang, as they begin a new era on a new network. I can’t wait! Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Battle Those Low Rates - with Three Types of Income If you depend on fixed-income invest-

ments for at least part of your income, you probably haven’t been too happy in recent years, as interest rates have hit historic lows. Nonetheless, even in a low-rate environment, you can broaden the income-producing potential of your investment portfolio.
However, before taking action, it’s helpful to know what the near-term direction of interest rates may look like. The Federal Reserve has stated that it plans to keep short-term rates at their current historic lows until at least mid-2015. The Fed doesn’t control long-term rates, making them somewhat less predictable, but it’s still likely that these rates will rise sooner than short-term ones.

In any case, rather than worry about something you can’t control – that is, interest rate movements – try to focus on those things you can accomplish. And one achievable goal is to create an investment mix that includes three types of income: variable, reliable and rising. Variable income investments – Some variable income investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), offer significant protection of principal, and the value of your investment won’t change with fluctuating interest rates, provided you hold your CD until maturity. Of course, current rates are quite low, which means CDs provide you with little income today, but their rates have the potential to rise along with shortterm interest rates. Reliable income investments – When you purchase reliable income investments, which can include individual bonds, you have the opportunity to earn more income today, and more consistent income over time, than you’d typically get from variable income investments. However, you will likely also experience greater price fluctuations as interest rates change. Specifically, as interest rates rise, the price of your existing bonds typically will fall. Rising income investments – When investing for income, you’ll want to keep at least one eye on inflation – because if the interest rates paid on your CDs and individual bonds are lower than the annual inflation rate, you may lose purchasing power. If this gap persists over time, it could grow into a real problem for you. Consequently, you’ll want at least some of your investment income to come from rising income investments, such as dividend-paying stocks. Of course, not all stocks pay dividends, but with the help of your financial advisor, you can find companies that have paid – and even increased – their dividends for many years running. And if you don’t actually need the dividends to supplement your cash flow, you can reinvest them to build your ownership stake in these stocks. Keep in mind, though, that companies can reduce or discontinue dividends at any time. Also, remember that stock prices will constantly rise and fall, so the value of your principal could decline. As you can see, all three types of income-producing investments – variable, reliable and rising – offer some benefits, along with some risks of which you need to be aware. But putting together a mix of these investments that’s appropriate for your individual needs, goals and risk tolerance may help you boost the productivity of the “income” portion of your portfolio – no matter what’s happening with interest rates. ¥ On Dec. 4, 1872, a British ship spots the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot American brig, sailing erratically but at full sail near the Azores Islands with not a soul on board. The last entry in the captain’s log was dated 11 days earlier, showing that the Mary Celeste had been drifting since then with no one at the wheel. The fate of the crew remains a mystery to this day. ¥ On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington. ¥ On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the era of national prohibition of alcohol in America. Utah became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, achieving the requisite three-fourths majority of states’ approval. ¥ On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s famous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Williams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.” ¥ On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold -- who had confessed to serving as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb -- is sentenced to 30 years in jail for his crime. Roger Donlon of New York for his heroic action at Nam Dong. Donlon was shot in the stomach during an attack by hordes of Viet Cong. He stuffed a handkerchief into the wound, cinched up his belt and kept fighting. ¥ On Dec. 8, 1982, “SophieÕs Choice,” starring actress Meryl Streep as a Holocaust survivor, opens in theaters. With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed a while back, Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey", died peacefully at age 93.The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.
