DIESEL EMISSIONS TEST

On November 2, 1904, the use of fingerprints began in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas, and the St. Louis Police Department. They were assisted by a Sergeant from Scotland Yard who had been on duty at the St. Louis World’s Fair Exposition guarding the British display. Shortly afterwards, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) created America’s first national fingerprint repository, called the National Bureau of Criminal Identification. Come along with Tidbits as we examine fingerprints!

• Fingerprints form about 4 months before birth. We have fingerprints (as well as hand and foot prints) in order to increase traction. The ridges increase friction against surfaces. Foot and hand prints are just as unique as fingerprints.

• In some cultures criminals were identified by amputating an ear or finger, or by blinding an eye or cutting the tongue. Egyptians extracted teeth of criminals for ID purposes, and in medieval Europe they were branded like cattle— a practice that continued in China until 1905. Today we identify criminals through fingerprints.

Interesting Stuff

FINGERPRINT FILE (cont’d) • There may be 300 ridges on the skin between fingertips and wrist. There are millions of sweat pores between the ridges, which exude a nearly invisible mixture that’s 99% water and 1% fatty acid. Everything you touch is covered with this residue. The water will evaporate, but the fat remains. Fingerprints are still intact and readable on ancient mummies. • In ancient China, emperors used thumbprints to sign state papers. Artists used fingerprints on pictures instead of signatures. But the fact that every human being carries a signature on their fingertips wasn’t put to use in police work until William Herschel became interested in 1860. At that time, he was working for the British government in India. He handled the payment of pensions to retired people. But frequently one person would collect his money, and then later someone using the same name would show up to collect it again. Herschel couldn’t keep track of the many people he dealt with— so he started having everyone sign for their money with a thumbprint. The fraud stopped immediately, but it was decades before fingerprints came into play where crime solving was concerned.

• In 1892 a detective was called to a scene where two young children had been murdered. The mother accused an old man who lived nearby. He proclaimed his innocence. The policeman found a bloody handprint on the door. He called the old man to the scene, and had him place an inked handprint on a piece of paper. The prints didn’t match. Next he had the mother of the children do the same— and the prints matched. She had murdered her own kids because the man she loved wouldn’t marry her as long as she had children. This is the first recorded instance of fingerprints being used to solve a crime. (cont’d)

• Scotland Yard began using fingerprint evidence in 1901. Since then, fingerprint evidence has solved innumerable crimes. • For many decades, each police department kept its own collection of fingerprints on file. Any police department with a suspicious person in custody sent copies of fingerprints to each police department individually, and each police department searched through their files manually. It was a time-consuming and inefficient process. Congress established the FBI’s Identification Division in 1924 to be the central repository for all fingerprint records. Now known as the Criminal Justice Information Services Division, the bureau employs around 3,000 people and is the largest branch of the FBI. Currently the FBI has over 234 million fingerprints on file representing over 81 million people. Of the millions of sets of fingerprints in FBI files, none have ever been found to match. • In 1999, the Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS) went into operation. IAFIS stores over 51 million digital prints and compares them within minutes, pulling up a list of potential matches along with their criminal histories. State and local law enforcement agencies transmit fingerprint information to the system electronically, and get identification within a few hours. • There are several methods of finding fingerprints. One of the most common methods is called iodine fuming. In the late 1800s it was found that iodine fumes, when they come into contact with body fats and oils, will react with them in a way that makes them visible. To accomplish this, iodine crystals are put into a beaker and heated, which produces a purple gas.

What is a virus and how does it cause disease?

A virus’s job is to make as many copies of itself as quickly as possible. Viruses enter the body and make large numbers of viral copies using the cat’s cells as a virus factory. Ultimately the infected cells burst, shedding large numbers of viral copies that infect other normal cells and then the process is repeated over and over again. Viral infections can spread throughout an animal’s body at a very rapid pace causing sickness or death. A cat with a healthy immune system or who has been vaccinated against a specific virus, can stop the invasion and remain virus free. Poor immunity will cause the cat to become ill and many individuals die.

The Deadly Seven Feline Viruses

A virus is not a true living disease organism like a bacterium or fungus. It is a complex collection of genetic molecules, either DNA or RNA, encased in a protein coating. A virus is made up of chemical sequences that reproduce themselves rapidly in an animal or plant and it can cause disease. Medical researchers ascribe the words – “a smart virus”, “ability to adapt”, “a killer bug” giving the virus almost human characteristics, whereas the biochemist will ascribe chemical reactions and base pairings as a laboratory experiment devoid of all living character. They are both right.

Diamond is a stone that excels in brilliance and displays a striking play of prismatic colors. It is the preferred gem in engagement and wedding rings, which are worn every day. It is also the hardest natural material known, where hardness is defined as resistance to scratching. Their hardness makes them quite useful in industry as cutting and grinding tools. Diamonds are used to polish, cut, or wear away any material, including other diamonds. There are diamond-tipped drill bits and saws, and diamond powder is used as an abrasive. Less expensive industrial-grade diamonds, known as bort, are used for such purposes. Diamonds were probably first mind in India over 3,000 years ago. Roughly 49% of diamonds originate from central and southern Africa, although significant sources have been discovered in Canada, India, Russia, Brazil, and Australia. Today experts in the field of gemology grade diamonds and other gemstones based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. Four characteristics, known informally as the four Cs, are now commonly used as the basic descriptors of diamonds: these are carat, cut, color, and clarity.

What about those leaves? Did you know that leaves really don't "turn" color per se? The colors we see in fall leaves have actually been there all season long! Another fact: Leaves in the high country last longer than they do along the Front Range. The cooler mountain temps support longer color than you will see at lower, more temperate elevations. And when there is fall moisture at any elevation, it too, will prolong seasonal color.

Know your leaves Some leaves will compost more quickly than others and are better in the compost pile. Some are too big to use as mulch. And others may be toxic, so you should avoid putting them into your compost pile as composting does not necessarily remove toxicity. Poison ivy, leaves from apple trees which can be toxic to pets, and debris from other toxic plants should not go into compost. Leaves from garden debris such as tomatoes and other edibles that are diseased should also be kept out of compost. Size matters Small leaves such as honey locust will decompose more quickly than larger leaves. If you use leaves to mulch around plants, use smaller leaves. Large leaves on the other hand, such as cottonwood and catalpa, tend to matt down and with moisture will get very wet and soggy. If left on the ground, their size and sogginess will impede oxygen getting into the soil. Leaves can stain Some leaves, such as oak, which have high tannin content can stain pavement and other surfaces. If you have these trees in your yard, make them high priority on your cleanup list. If you compost Don't compost leaves exclusively, but add them to an existing compost pile. Per the CSU extension, add nitrogen when you add leaves to the compost pile. You can use a fertilizer product as long as it does not contain weed killer or use fresh organic green matter.

Unfortunately, sooner or later those brilliantly-colored leaves will fade and fall. If they are in your yard, it's clean-up time. There are a few things to know about leaf clean-up. The primary principle when dealing with fall leaf cleanup is to avoid sending them to the landfill if at all possible. Recycling leaves locally or adding them to your own compost bin is the most sustainable step. Also, don't rake and stack leaves along the curb where they can fall into the gutter, as leaves will clog storm drains.

Q. Just like you said, I’ve been brushing my child’s teeth three times a day – for 2 (TWENTY) minutes. How long should I keep up that “60 minutes per day” tooth brushing routine? Cindy Rose A. Did I really say “Brush for 20 minutes, three times a day” ? Oops! I checked, and I did say that – and found that “typo” in the last two Tidbits. (Unlike USA’s national debt, that one little extra “zero” probably will make a big difference in compliance!) Here’s the correction - without the extra “zero”: Brush two times daily for 2 MINUTES (and floss just the teeth you want to keep).

All of you parents who have been brushing your child’s teeth 20 minutes, three times a Day, or making sure they do, deserve the “Congressional Medal of Honor for Parenting”! Q. Where can I get great information on how to keep my child’s teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime (besides right here in Tidbits, of course) ? A. There’s a great new website recently launched by a coalition of 35 prominent dental organizations, known as the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives. It is the first-ever joint children’s oral health campaign with the Ad Council. Media Partners for the Campaign include Sesame Street, Dream Works, Cartoon Network (This is going to be BIG.) Dr. Joe Blaes, editor of Dental Economics Magazine, states: “The new campaign will teach parents and caregivers….. as well as children about oral health and the simple ways they can prevent oral disease….fewer than half of parents (44%) report that their children brush their teeth twice a day. While most parents understand the importance oral health and their children brushing their teeth, they are not aware of the serious consequences of not taking care of their children’s teeth.”

Check out the FUN and EDUCATIONAL videos at the new website: www.2min2x.org KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY FOR A LIFETIME – 2min/2x You can Ask the Dentist by calling Dr. Burgner at 720-870-9500, or consult his website: www.ParkerLumineers.com Dr. Burgner has served on the Fellowship Examination Committee of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), and has received national recognition awards from that 30,000 member organization. There was a man who worked for the Post Office whose job was to process all the mail that had illegible addresses. One day, a letter came addressed in a shaky handwriting to God with no actual address. He thought he should open it to see what it was about.

www.coloradojusticenow.com

The letter read Dear God, I am an 83 year old widow, living on a very small pension. Yesterday someone stole my purse. It had $100 in it, which was all the money I had until my next pension payment. Next Sunday is Christmas, and I had invited two of my friends over for dinner. Without that money, I have nothing to buy food with, have no family to turn to, and you are my only hope... Can you please help me?

Sincerely, Edna The postal worker was touched. He showed the letter to all the other workers. Each one dug into his or her wallet and came up with a few dollars. By the time he made the rounds, he had collected $96, which they put into an envelope and sent to the woman. The rest of the day, all the workers felt a warm glow thinking of Edna and the dinner she would be able to share with her friends. Christmas came and went. A few days later, another letter came from the same old lady to God. All the workers gathered around while the letter was opened. It read: Dear God, How can I ever thank you enough for what you did for me? Because of your gift of love, I was able to fix a glorious dinner for my friends. We had a very nice day and I told my friends of your wonderful gift. By the way, there was $4 missing. I think it might have been those bastards at the post office. Sincerely, Edna
