CROSSINGS by Patricia L. Cook
Tidbits crosses many paths in researching information for your reading pleasure. This issue will look at some familiar crosses and crossings that we all encounter. • The first type of crossing that comes to mind for most is a railroad crossing. Many drivers encounter railroad crossings every time they drive. Rail lines are prevalent in North America, which highlights the fact that railroads play a huge part in transporting goods and people across this continent.

• Where railroads exist, crossings also exist. Railroad crossings are intersections where a roadway crosses a railroad at-grade. In the United States, they are referred to as grade crossings. In Canada and many other places, they are called level crossings. • As of 2005, there were 147,681 public grade crossings and 94,583 private crossings in the United States. Public crossings are maintained by a public authority, but private crossings, not intended for public use, are not. They are for the use of the owners of the property and usually on farms or industrial complexes. • Grade crossings in all countries have always been accident-prone areas. When vehicles or pedestrians cross the paths of trains, trains win. The good news is that in recent years, accident rates have gone down. turn the page for more!

CROSSINGS (continued): • The U.S. Department of Transportation has reported that crossing accidents between vehicles and trains decreased 84 percent between 1972 and 2009. In 2009, there were 1,900 collisions, compared to 12,000 in 1972.

• Much of the improved safety at railroad crossings has been attributed to the Operation Lifesaver program that was started in Idaho in 1972. The Idaho governor’s office, Idaho Peace Officers and Union Pacific Railroad started the program with a six-week public awareness campaign. Fatalities fell 43 percent in the inaugural year, and within a decade, the program spread all around the country. Canada added Operation Lifesaver in 1981. A national office was created in 1986 for the non-profit organization to support the efforts of the states. The United Kingdom, Estonia, Mexico and Argentina also have Operation Lifesaver programs.

• The warning signs at railroad crossings are similar worldwide. The “crossbuck” or X sign usually contains the words “railroad crossing” in the United States and “railway crossing” in Canada. The “crossbuck” is also called a “saltire” or Saint Andrew’s cross. Saint Andrew was a disciple of Jesus Christ who was martyred on an X-shaped cross as opposed to a traditional cross. The saltire is used in many flags, including Scotland’s, where Saint Andrew is the patron Saint. Nova Scotia, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. states of Florida and Alabama are others with the saltire on their flags.

• The idea for the Red Cross was born in 1859 when a young Swiss man, Henry Dunant, saw soldiers in Italy on a battlefield wounded and dying and not receiving assistance. He organized local people to come to their aid. • In 1863, five men from Geneva, Switzerland, including Dunant, set up the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, which later became the International Committee of the Red Cross. This led to the creation of the Geneva Convention, in which 12 governments agreed to offer care for the wounded, and paved the way for medical services to be “neutral” on the battlefield.

• The emblem for the Red Cross was set as a red cross on a white background, the inverse of the Swiss flag. While that emblem has changed a little through the years, the symbol of the Red Cross is recognizable worldwide. • Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, was working in Washington, D.C., in 1861 Continued on page 5

Many cats vomit hairballs, food and phlegm on a regular basis. Is this type of vomiting ever normal? It is commonly believed that it is. In truth, it appears that vomiting in any species is a sign of an underlying problem. For the past 5 years, Cat Specialist and another feline specialty hospital have been working up vomiting cats, getting biopsy samples from the stomach, liver, pancreas, 3 areas of the small intestine, lymph nodes, and any other areas that may look abnormal. Comparing the clinical signs of vomiting to clinical disease that a pathologist discovers has uncovered a surprising revelation. The majority of cats that regularly vomit have chronic underlying clinical disease! It is common to have a number of clinical problems present at the same time so figuring out what is going on can be a challenge. Food intolerance and to a lesser extent food allergies are seen and have been related to vomiting. Changing to GI sensitive diets and probiotic supplements usually helps these cats.

Vomiting hairballs is very common for some cats but now this may be a clue that something is wrong internally. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and/or an early form of intestinal cancer (Lymphoma) may be an underlying cause in many of these patients. The good news is that the majority of these cats if diagnosed early and treated early live normal lives for a long time! Pancreatitis has been the chronic mystery disease in cats because until recently it has been very difficult to diagnose. A new diagnostic test has given doctors the ability to define this problem and start treatment immediately. Acid Reflux Disease (GERD) is more common than suspected. Acid blockers, administered daily, resolve clinical signs. New tests have helped veterinarians diagnose and treat their patients better. Our study has shown that a short exploratory surgery with biopsies is needed to diagnose the cause of chronic vomiting and how to best treat this condition. If you have any questions about chronic vomiting call our nurses at Cat Specialist – 303-663-2287. Dr. James K. Olson is "The Meow Doc", a nationally recognized veterinarian specializing exclusively in cats. Dr. Olson holds the title of Diplomate, Feline Specialty, from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. He is certified to practice nuclear medicine by the State of Colorado Department of Radiaton Safety. His practice is located in Castle Rock, Colorado. Is Your Cat Bored? We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity. If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

CROSSINGS (continued): when wounded Civil War soldiers needed help. She gathered supplies and distributed them for the soldiers. She also read to them, wrote letters for them and prayed with them. Barton was known as the “Angel of the Battlefield.” • Barton’s organizational efforts and commitment to helping soldiers along with observations of the International Red Cross at work in Europe led to the creation of the American Red Cross in 1881. Barton was 60 years old and led the new American organization for 23 years. • Today, the American Red Cross is a part of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which was founded in 1919. These organizations bring aid to victims of disasters throughout the world. • The building housing the headquarters of the American Red Cross, located in Washington, D.C., was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965. The building has many historical artifacts, writings and more from the organization’s past. An original set of paneled, stained-glass Tiffany Windows, commissioned in 1917 and designed and constructed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, are on display in their original state. The beautiful windows illustrate the most significant values of the Red Cross: hope, faith, charity and love. • One of the most loved poets of Victorian-era Britain, Poet Laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote the poem “Crossing the Bar:” It reads: “For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place, The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face, When I have crossed the bar.” • Being a Poet Laureate meant being appointed as a member of the royal household for life. Tennyson was expected to write wonderful poems celebrating national and royal events in Britain. • Written in 1889, three years before his death, “Crossing the Bar” was not his final work, but Tennyson requested that it appear as the final poem in all of his collections. The poem described his attitude about death, using a sand bar to describe the barrier between life and death. Another image that many thought he intended to convey with the poem was that of “crossing” oneself as Catholics do in a religious gesture of devotion.

Douglas County- A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of home sellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most home sellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. Scott McQueen Coral gemstones come from some of the most beautiful miracles of Nature – the reefs, banks and atolls found in a variety of places around the world. Specially trained divers go into the ocean depths between three and 300 meters to carefully harvest coral. Once brought up the branches are cleaned, sorted and processed using saws, knives, files or drills. It is very seldom cut or ground on a wheel. In its raw form coral has a matt finish, but once it is polished it has a beautiful shine that looks marvelous in a variety of jewelry settings. The fewer the cracks, blotches, striations and holes, the higher the quality and the higher the price. Like pearls, corals are organic and are closely related chemically; both consist of more than 90 percent calcium carbonate. Corals come in a variety of colors: red, white, blue, brown and black. The most popular are the red hues of pale pink and salmon. Corals have a hardness of only 3.5 which makes them softer than any other gemstone material. If you wear a coral be careful with cosmetics, hot water or bright light. Keep your coral pieces clean with a soft, damp towel being careful not to scratch the surface. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. The good news is, you can correct this! HOW? EAT! Eat again, then eat some more! Now, I’m not suggesting stuffing yourself with junk and highly processed foods, but to make a conscious effort to plan your meals, prepare them, and take them with you each day so you can have well balance, healthy meal with snacks every 2-3 hours. If this is new to you, don’t be surprised if you feel overly stuffed for the first couple of weeks! Inevitably, your metabolism will adjust and work as it should, and you’ll find yourself feeling hungry periodically during the day. That’s what you want! Remember, when you fuel your body consistently, you’re allowing it to run, process food and function properly. If you’re not hungry very often, chances are pretty good your metabolism isn’t operating efficiently. So, eat up and enjoy the healthy feelings and energizing changes which come from a well-functioning metabolism! Check next weeks column for tips on what and how much to eat, and the truth about calories!

are
Ultrathin Dr Burgner Lumineers are made of a beautiful, strong “white” porcelain. They are made thin, so they can fit over your own teeth and not make you look like one of our “equine” friend’s smile. How many do I need? Typically, a nice, beautiful smile shows eight to ten teeth. My own Smile Makeover needed ten Lumineers. The first session took just a few minutes with a little polishing reshaping and an easy impression. Then at a second session, in about an hour, I got my new smile. It was easy - with NO shots, NO drilling, No pain, and NO sensitivity! To participate in the spirit of the holiday season, you may be thinking of making some charitable gifts. If so, you’ll no doubt enjoy helping a group that does valuable work.
But to begin with, it’s important to understand just how necessary your gifts are to the country’s social fabric. Given the effects of the Great Recession and the slow recovery, it’s not surprising to learn that charitable giving fell a combined 13% in 2008 and 2009, after adjusting for inflation, according to The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. And although 2010 giving increased by 2.1%, again adjusted for inflation, many groups are seeing tough times as 2011 comes to a close. So your gift counts. And it can count for you, too. By contributing to a qualified tax-exempt organization [e.g., a charitable group that has received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS], you may earn valuable tax deductions. This is true whether you give cash or another type of asset, such as stocks or real estate. And you may be able to get further tax benefits if the noncash asset you’ve donated has appreciated in value since you purchased it. Making charitable gifts now may help you reduce your taxable estate. As you may know, the estate tax exemption level has fluctuated in recent years, so it’s hard for any of us to say for sure that we won’t be subjecting our estates to these taxes. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps now to plan for possible future estate taxes. One such step might involve establishing a charitable remainder trust. Under this arrangement, you’d place some assets, such as stocks or real estate, in a trust, which could then use the assets to pay you an income stream over a certain period of time. When you establish the trust, you may be able to receive tax benefits based on the amount the charity is likely to ultimately receive, the charitable group’s so-called “remainder interest.” Upon its termination, the trust would relinquish the remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named. Keep in mind, though, that this type of trust can be complex; to establish one, you’ll need to work with your qualified tax advisor and estate-planning attorney. Another popular contribution vehicle is the “donor-advised fund.” Here’s how it works: You give cash or appreciated securities to the donor-advised fund, with the expectation of receiving a tax deduction for the contribution in that same year. You recommend which charities are to benefit from the contributions to the fund, and the fund invests and manages your contribution, along with the other assets in the fund. Again, you’ll need to consult with your qualified tax advisor before establishing a donor-advised fund to help ensure you obtain any expected tax benefits. As we’ve seen, you can follow different charitable giving strategies. But however you choose to make charitable gifts, you can take satisfaction in helping worthy organizations while possibly improving your own tax picture. "Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady. ======== "Somebody has said there are only two kinds of people in the world. There are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good morning, Lord," and there are those who wake up in the morning and say, "Good Lord, it's morning." ======== A minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn't find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: "I have circled the block 10 times. If I don't park here, I'll miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses." When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note "I've circled this block for 10 years. If I don't give you a ticket I'll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation." ======== There is the story of a pastor who got up one Sunday and announced to his congregation: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets." ======= While driving in Pennsylvania , a family caught up to an Amish carriage.. The owner of the carriage obviously had a sense of humor, because attached to the back of the carriage was a hand printed sign... "Energy efficient vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do not step in exhaust." ======= A Sunday School teacher began her lesson with a question, "Boys and girls, what do we know about God?" A hand shot up in the air. "He is an artist!" said the kindergarten boy. "Really? How do you know?" the teacher asked. "You know - Our Father, who does art in Heaven... "

On Jan. 1, 1876, the first area-wide New Year’s Day Mummers’ Parade is held in Philadelphia. Mummers’ celebrations in America date back to colonial times. Reciting doggerel and receiving in return cakes and ale, groups of five to 20 people, their faces blackened, would march from home to home, shouting and discharging firearms into the air. On Dec. 28, 1895, the world’s first commercial movie screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. The film was a series of short scenes from everyday French life. Admission was charged for the first time. On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up the bar at the Carey Hotel in Wichita, Kansas, causing several thousand dollars in damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons as part of her anti-alcohol crusade. On Dec. 30, 1922, in post-revolutionary Russia, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics is established. In the USSR, all levels of government were controlled by the Communist Party. Soviet industry was owned and managed by the state, and agricultural land was divided into state-run collective farms.

On Dec. 31, 1937, Anthony Hopkins is born in Port Talbot, Wales. Hopkins is known for playing one of the greatest villains in movie history, the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in “The Silence of the Lambs” and its two sequels, “Hannibal” and “Red Dragon.” On Dec. 29, 1940, London suffers its most devastating air raid when Germans firebomb the city. The next day, a newspaper photo of St. Paul’s Cathedral standing undamaged amid the smoke and flames seemed to symbolize the capital’s unconquerable spirit during the Battle of Britain. On Dec. 26, 1966, the first day of the first Kwanzaa is celebrated in Los Angeles.
