• Historically it is said that the holiday tradition of decorating Christmas trees started in Germany. The first decorations were simple white candles followed by roses a bit later. • In 1605, a groundbreaking moment occurred when a tree in Strasbourg, France, a city on the Rhine River near the German border, was brought inside for decorating. It was adorned with paper roses, nuts, wafers, sweets and lighted candles. After this, more trees were brought indoors and making ornaments became a family holiday tradition. • Much imagination was used to come up with thoughtful and creative decorations, including cookies and painted eggshells. The introduction of tinsel in 1610 was a huge favorite, originally made with pure silver. Turn the page for more!

• Lauscha, Germany became the hub of the glass ornament business and had many glass companies. For years they had been producing glass articles such as marbles and bottles and soon began creating glass molds for ornaments. Their first ornaments were molds of Christian saints, famous people, children, animals and more. These new ornaments were a huge success and were in demand. Nearly every family in the Lauscha area became involved in the business of making glass Christmas ornaments either in a home-based foundry or local factory

The holiday season can cause your cat to become stressed, act in a very abnormal fashion, eat odd foods and hide to avoid conflict. From Labor Day to New Years there are human functions/parties, shopping, travel and a lot of commotion happening all the time. Cats like routine, they like to control their environment and they want to feel safe. Stress in all species creates abnormal behavior, illness and loss of control of life’s duties. Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, urine marking, hissing, showing reclusiveness, excessive grooming may be the first signs of stress – something has changed and your cat is having a problem dealing with it. Hiding or getting into the “meatloaf” posture (sternal recumbency, with legs tucked underbody) is commonly seen. Cats may need help if they cannot cope with their or your stress. Be observant to change and let your cat be in a safe place (safe haven) while the activities are occurring. Medical intervention may be necessary if the changes causing the stress are not resolved. Scott McQueen Coral gemstones come from some of the most beautiful miracles of Nature – the reefs, banks and atolls found in a variety of places around the world. Specially trained divers go into the ocean depths between three and 300 meters to carefully harvest coral. Once brought up the branches are cleaned, sorted and processed using saws, knives, files or drills. It is very seldom cut or ground on a wheel. In its raw form coral has a matt finish, but once it is polished it has a beautiful shine that looks marvelous in a variety of jewelry settings. The fewer the cracks, blotches, striations and holes, the higher the quality and the higher the price. Like pearls, corals are organic and are closely related chemically; both consist of more than 90 percent calcium carbonate. Corals come in a variety of colors: red, white, blue, brown and black. The most popular are the red hues of pale pink and salmon. Corals have a hardness of only 3.5 which makes them softer than any other gemstone material. If you wear a coral be careful with cosmetics, hot water or bright light. Keep your coral pieces clean with a soft, damp towel being careful not to scratch the surface. Q: My wife’s relatives are coming in next week to stay with us through the holidays. They tend to sit around the house, run up the electric bill and mess around with the tools in my workshop. Any tips for handling them? -- Bill in Kissimmee, Fla. A: Unfortunately, I’m not Dear Abby, so I don’t want to step into personal territory by suggesting how to handle relatives. I might be able to provide some suggestions on cutting the electric bill a bit and preserving some of your sanity. You probably won’t be able to change their sitting-around habits (presumably watching television or tapping away on their laptops, if you say they’re running up the electric bill). Talk with your wife about getting away together for an evening or two during their visit, or schedule a get-together with your friends one night. To save electricity turn the heat a few degrees cooler (or turn the air conditioning a few degrees warmer, since Florida weather can be tricky in December). Not out of your comfort zone, but just a little less intense. Running the central air or heat less can knock a little bit off of that electric bill. Shut off any unused rooms by closing the registers and then shutting the doors. If you have Christmas lights indoors or out, light them for only a few hours each evening. As far as your workshop goes, that’s pretty easy. Set limits. Politely ask, or have your wife ask, your in-laws to stay away from the shop area. You don’t need to give an excuse. As added insurance, lock the door to the shop -- as long as it doesn’t impede safe exit from the house in an emergency. HOME TIP: The home workshop can be a welcome escape from a hectic holiday schedule. Make some time to work on a project or just organize your workspace this season. IT’S ORNIMENTAL (continued): ed States, F.W. Woolworth, an early American mass merchandiser, began importing German glass ornaments in the 1880s. By 1890, he was reportedly selling approximately $25 million worth of the ornaments! • When World War I broke out in 1914 many things, including sentiments toward purchases of Christmas ornaments, changed. There was a backlash against all things German. Sales and production of German ornaments slowed, but only for a while. • Also, Japan started producing ornaments on a huge scale in the 1920s and took a slice out of the ornament market that Germany held. The Japanese specialized in newer and more colorful designs. The Czech Republic also became known for their fancy Christmas ornaments and shipped many to the U.S. • More than 250 million Christmas ornaments were being imported to America by 1935, mostly from Germany, Japan, and the Czech Republic. This was when U.S. businessman and German immigrant, Max Eckhardt, an importer of ornaments, knew that America needed to be producing, not just importing. • Eckhardt and Bill Thompson of the F.W. Woolworth Company worked together to convince the Corning Glass Company of Corning, New York to enter the ornament market. Corning had been making thousands of light bulbs out of very thin glass using a “ribbon” glassblowing machine. The machine could produce 2,000 bulbs per minute! Eckhardt believed the machine could be altered to produce Christmas ornaments instead of light bulbs. • Corning began trials with their equipment and employees, making ornaments in various shapes and sizes. Soon, it was clear they had the equipment and abilities for the job. Woolworth’s requested production of over 230,000 glass holiday items for their stores. In 1939 they began selling the American-made ornaments.

Recently, I found a painting that has vivid colors of the Season. In it Santa is standing next to the fireplace in a darkened room lit by a single candle. The children must have wanted to give Santa a little light for his most important activities that night. Santa has noticed the Nativity on the nearby table. Lower Debt Levels Mean Greater Investment Opportunities

In the past few years, Americans have done a pretty good job of whittling down their debt load. If you’re in this group, you may now have a chance to use your lower level of indebtedness to your advantage — by investing for the future.

Consider the numbers: In 2007, just before the financial crisis, the country’s household debt service ratio was about 14 percent. (The debt service ratio is the ratio of debt payments, including mortgages and consumer debt, to disposable personal income.) But by 2012, this figure had dipped below 11 percent, the lowest level

since 1994. These figures are national averages, but they do translate into real-life savings for many of us. If you’re in this group — that is, if you’ve lowered your debt payments noticeably — what should you do with this “found” money?

Of course, you could spend it on material objects, which, in some cases, may make your life more pleasant today. But you’d probably be better off by devoting your financial resources to your goals for tomorrow, such as college for your children and, eventually, a comfortable retirement lifestyle for yourself. Consequently, you want may want to consider these suggestions: Increase your contributions to your retirement plan. Try to put more money into your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). Your contributions are typically made with pretax dollars, so the more you invest, the lower your taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Fully fund your IRA. You can put in up to $5,000 per year (as of 2012) to a traditional or Roth IRA, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. A traditional IRA grows tax-deferred, while a Roth IRA can grow taxfree, provided you meet certain conditions. Fill in “gaps” in your financial strategy. With a little extra money each month, can you find ways to fill in the “gaps” in your financial strategy? For example, do you have sufficient life insurance and disability income insurance? Or can you add some investments that can help diversify your overall portfolio? While diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss, it can help reduce the effects of volatility on your holdings. Build an emergency fund. It’s a good idea to build an emergency fund containing six to 12 months’ worth of living expenses. Without such a fund, you may be forced to dip into long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as a large bill from the doctor or a major car repair. Keep the money in a liquid, low-risk account. Establish a 529 plan. If you have children or grandchildren whom you would like to help get through college, you might want to contribute to a 529 plan. Your earnings grow tax-free, provided withdrawals are used for qualified higher education expenses. Plus, your contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. (Be aware, though, that withdrawals used for purposes other than qualified education expenses may be subject to federal and state taxes, plus a 10% penalty.) Reducing your debt level can remove some stress from your life. And you’ll gain even more benefits from debt reduction by using your savings to speed your progress toward your important financial goals.

¥ On Dec. 29, 1878, the first game is played between two teams of the first professional baseball league in Cuba. Baseball was introduced in Cuba around 1864, when some students returned home from studying in the United States and introduced their fellow islanders to the bat and ball. ¥ On Dec. 25, 1880, Layne Hall is born in Mississippi. When he died in 1990, Hall was the oldest licensed driver in the United States. In his nearly 75 years on the road, Hall never got a speeding ticket or citation of any kind. ¥ On Dec. 26, 1917, during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson announces the nationalization of many of the country’s railroads.
