Beware of the female swan; she will attack anything that presents a danger to her eggs, including dogs, foxes and people. • The stars Deneb and Albirco mark the head and tail of the swan in the constellation Cygnus. According to mythology, Cygnus was a friend of the son of Apollo, the sun god. When the son fell into the river, Cygnus dove into the water time after time in an attempt to rescue his friend, but to no avail. Seasonal Hazards:
Indoors • Holiday trees & plants, tree water, lights & electrical cords, tinsel, string, ribbon, rubber bands, decorations, potpourri dry & liquid, etc. can harm your cat. • Household cleaners and bleach are very toxic to cats (poisoning and/or chemical burns). • Holiday stress can affect cats so protect your cats from parties and too many people. • Open ducts, woodstoves, fireplaces, and indoor air pollution can be deadly. (Carbon monoxide) • Family prescription medications, dental floss, string, and cleaning supplies can be deadly to cats. • Holiday foods, candy, alcoholic beverages, & treats can be dangerous. • Computer cords/mice, electronics, loud sounds & bright lights are dangers. • Hot stoves, grills and appliances (cats sleeping in clothes driers & washers) can burn or kill cats. • Survey your house for any other potential dangers and “catproof” your house! Outdoors • Winter damp, cold, snow, frostbite, high winds & no shelter can be deadly to your cats. • Garages have antifreeze, motor oil & grease, warm cars/ engines & poisonous chemicals. • Cats being hit by a car or truck are common. • Cat fights with diseased cats can make your cat sick – FeLV & FIV. • Being hurt or killed by coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks, & mountain lions are common in Colorado. • Hunting and ingesting a ‘bad meal’ are common. • Diseases like Rabies, Bubonic Plague, West Nile Fever, etc. are possible with outdoor exposure.

Your cat needs to eat a balanced, healthy diet and have access to fresh,
clean water. Provide some bathroom privacy! Put the litter box in a quiet, easy to access place and clean it twice daily. In multiple cat households, provide one more litter box than cats. Play with your cat and have cat friendly toys – play reduces cat stress so play with your cat! Groom your cat often: daily if possible. Watch for skin problems, dandruff, bumps, sores and painful hair mats. These may require professional removal. Create cat friendly safe havens in your house – add cat towers, kitty cups and window perches. Keep your cat healthy with annual adult health exams and senior cats (>7 years of age) need health exams every 6 months (1 human year is 4 years to your cat). Keep all cats inside for safety or build a safe outdoor atrium (a fenced run in the backyard). The most dangerous time for a cat to be outside is from dusk until dawn. Do quarterly health reviews on your cat – ask ‘early warning’ health questions.

Is Your Cat Bored? We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity. If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

Speckle the Goose of Goshen, Ohio, is noted for laying the world’s heaviest egg. It was 24 ounces, twice as weighty as the average goose egg.
• It’s believed that the calling bird in the song is actually the mockingbird, a bird with the ability to imitate the sounds of other birds. One such bird was heard to imitate the songs of 32 different birds during a 10-minute period. • Can you identify the famous family who lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane? It was television’s Herman Munster family — Herman, Lily, Grandpa and Eddie. • A hen begins laying eggs when she is about 20 weeks old. If a farmer uses artificial lighting, the hen will begin laying at a younger age. If she is exposed to about 15 hours of light per day, she will lay more eggs. The average hen lays about 250 eggs in a year. • A member of the pigeon family, a turtledove is noted for its purring coo. It differs from the mourning dove, although the two are often mistaken. Don’t look for turtledoves in America, as they live mainly in Europe, Asia and Africa. • The Turtledove Folk Club of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is an organization for music lovers, specifically those who want to preserve and promote folk music and dance. • A partridge is most generally known as a quail or a bobwhite. There are about 150 varieties of partridges. Some parts of America refer to a partridge as a ruffed grouse. If you plan to keep a partridge as a pet, have plenty of grains, plant shoots and insects on hand. A typical bobwhite might consume as many 15,000 weed seeds a day, a tremendous help to farmers. • If someone offers you a Comice, Seckel, Winter Nelis, Kieffer, Leconte, Anjou, Bosc or Garber, he is offering you an item obtained from a pear tree. Over 800,000 tons of pears are produced annually in the United States, with the state of Washington leading the nation in fresh pear production. The average American eats about 3.1 pounds of fresh pears a year.

Scott McQueen Agate is varied and beautiful. There are several types of agate: Cyclops agate is a Mexican agate showing only a single eye. Moss agate has colors and filaments suggestive of vegetable growth. Dendritic agates have fern like patterns in them. Turritella agate is formed from silicified fossil Turritella (snail) shells. Agatized coral is in essence petrified cora often referred to as Petoskey stone. Certain stones when viewed in thin sections using transmitted light show a lovely diffraction spectrum caused by the extreme delicacy of the successive bands. They are called rainbow agates. Sometimes agate coexists with layers of masses of opal, jasper or crystalline quartz. Other forms of agate include carnelian agate, faceted Botswana agate, Greek agate, Brazilian agate, Ellensburg blue agate, blue lace agate, plume agates, Mexican crazy-lace agate, and much more. You’ll find agate used in pins, brooches, paper knives, inkstands, marbles and seals. Agate is also used to make mortars and pestles used by pharmacists to crush and mix chemicals. It is also used for leather burnishing tools.

Ultrathin Dr Burgner Lumineers are made of a beautiful, strong “white” porcelain. They are made thin, so they can fit over your own teeth and not make you look like one of our “equine” friend’s smile. How many do I need? Typically, a nice, beautiful smile shows eight to ten teeth. My own Smile Makeover needed ten Lumineers. The first session took just a few minutes with a little polishing reshaping and an easy impression. Then at a second session, in about an hour, I got my new smile. It was easy - with NO shots, NO drilling, No pain, and NO sensitivity!

4. Save more. Get into the habit of regularly putting money away each week or each month. It doesn't matter how small the amount, you can always increase it once you find yourself with more on hand from your other money saving efforts. Saving itself motivates you to keep at it, as you watch your nest egg grow. You might want to have a regular amount deducted from your paycheck and deposited directly into your savings account. Many people find this a painless way to quickly build up cash assets. Always remember, little things can quickly add up to huge savings. And for savings relating to home financing or refinancing, please feel free to call or email us with any questions. We’re always glad to talk.... Have a great day!

1. Create a budget. Drawing up a budget may not be anyone's favorite way to pass the time, but it sure pays off when it comes to saving money. You can't cut expenses without knowing what you have coming in and how it's going out. Making a budget instantly highlights the places where you might make some cuts. Without a budget, it's hard to keep saving money over a long period of time, because you don't see where your expenses may be going up.
3. Spend less. Review what you spend on everything, and look for opportunities to save money. For example, check with your phone company for cheaper rates and cellular calling plans. Think about cutting out newspaper delivery or magazine subscriptions you don't really need. Bring coffee to work in a thermos. Use the public library instead of buying books and renting movies. These things all add up--and the more you look for opportunities to save, the more you'll uncover.

Part 1 of 2 One good outcome of the economic recovery is that people are becoming more careful with how they spend their money. For many of us, this means acquiring new financial habits. Here are our Top Ten Tips for stretching a dollar today. The first four are good overall things to do:
2. Trim your debt. Credit cards are certainly convenient. But you want to minimize what you owe, as credit cards usually carry the highest interest rates. Watch what you spend with these cards--this is where that budget comes in--and make it a rule to pay off your outstanding balances each month. This can save you big money by eliminating those monthly interest charges.

You can’t predict how long you’ll live. Nonetheless, you still need to consider longevity as a key factor in creating, and following, a longterm investment strategy.
And your projected lifespan may be longer than you had thought. Men who turned 65 in 2010 can expect to live another 18.6 years, while women who reached 65 that same year can anticipate another 20.7 years, according to the 2011 Social Security Trustees Report. And these figures are just averages; depending on your health and family history of longevity, you could well spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. Possibly because people are now realizing they may have to support themselves for far longer than earlier generations did, they seem to be growing increasingly concerned about running out of money in their later years. In fact, in a poll of people ages 44 to 75, sponsored by Allianz Life Insurance, 61 percent said they fear depleting their assets more than they fear dying. So, if you’re concerned about outliving your resources — or if you think that you may become one of those people — what steps should you take, both now and during your retirement? Here are a few ideas: Keep investing. Put away as much money as you can afford for your retirement. Take advantage of taxdeferred accounts, such as your 401(k) and traditional IRA, or tax-free accounts, such as a Roth IRA. (Roth IRA earnings are tax-free provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59-1/2.) And keep investing, year in and year out, despite the inevitable market volatility you’ll encounter along the way. Re-assess your retirement age. If you enjoy your work, you might consider staying at your job a few years later than originally intended. Those extra years of income, not to mention extra contributions to your 401(k) and potentially bigger Social Security payouts, can make a big difference to your retirement lifestyle. Delay taking Social Security. As the laws now stand, you can start taking Social Security as young as 62, but your monthly checks will be bigger when you reach your “full” retirement age. You’ll get your biggest monthly Social Security checks if you wait until age 70, when they “max out,” but many people feel that waiting that long may not be worth it, when weighing the lost years of any payments against the unknown variable of life expectancy. Calculate your “withdrawal rate.” Once you retire, it’s essential that you know how much can withdraw each year from your investments without running out of money. Your withdrawal rate depends on a variety of factors, including your age, size of portfolio, risk tolerance and retirement lifestyle. A financial professional can help you calculate your initial withdrawal rate and adjust it as time goes on. The possibility of outliving your resources is not a pleasant thought. But by taking the steps described above, as well as others, you can go a long way toward taking the fear out of longevity, leaving you free to fully enjoy an active retirement. 1 Corinthians 15:57 (KJV) But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Is there victory to be had in thanking God? The answer is absolutely yes! No matter what you facing today, no matter what problem you are dealing with, no matter the trial or the tribulation that you are facing, you can thank God and thank your way out of it! This is not Sunday morning Preacher hype, not just motivating rhetoric, this is the Bible truth. You don’t even have to understand it, you don’t have to know how or why it works, you can just start thanking God….. And someone might ask, you mean thanking God for my sickness?....no! Thanking God for my poverty and my lack?....no! Thanking God for my pink slip and my foreclosure notice?....no! No, God is not the thief, God is not the one who steals, God is not the one who destroys, He is not the killer, He is not the destroyer! No matter what you are facing, no matter what has come against you, you can thank God for the answer! Someone say, “Thank God for the answer!” In advance, before you see it, before you feel it, before you can tell any difference of any kind, begin to thank God. And whether you see it or feel it, you are already on your way out, is that good news today or what? Could you thank God for enough money to pay off all your bills, all your debts and not have a single idea how it might happen? The good news is that you do not have to know how to have faith. This is the very essence of what faith is, the substance, the evidence of things not seen yet! God, thank you for making my heart whole and sound. God thank you that every trace of cancer is leaving my body, God thank you that I have more money than I need to support myself and I can give into every good work. God thank you for setting me free from smoking, God thank you for setting me free from drinking, God thank you for setting me free from every bondage in my life! The Bible tells us that we are to act and to imitate our father in the faith Abraham, who called those things which be not as though they were! Faith is calling things which be not as though they are already there! Abram changed his name to Abraham which means the father of many nations while he was still childless! Every time he meet someone he would say, hello my name is Abraham, the father of many nations! Father of many nations? Are you kidding me? Says who? Says faith! He believed he would have children as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the sea shore, how did he get that way? Abraham was fully persuaded, giving glory to God, that what he had promised, he was also able to do! And a big part of giving God glory is giving Him thanks!

Though never cheap, by the early 1850s, Colt revolvers were inexpensive enough to be a favorite with Americans headed westward during the California Gold Rush. ¥ On Jan 8, 1877, Crazy Horse and his warriors -- outnumbered, low on ammunition and forced to use outdated weapons -- fight their final losing battle against the U.S. Cavalry in Montana. The first man looked very quizzically at the dog and asked why the dog was allowed on the plane. The second man explained that he was from the Police Drugs Enforcement Agency and that the dog was a 'sniffing dog'. 'His name is Sniffer and he's the best there is. I'll show you once we get airborne, when I put him to work.' The plane took off, and once it has leveled out, the Policeman said, 'Watch this.'

He told Sniffer to 'search'. Sniffer jumped down, walked along the aisle, and finally sat very purposefully next to a woman for several seconds. Sniffer then returned to his seat and put one paw on the policeman's arm. The Policeman said, 'Good boy', and he turned to the man and said, 'That woman is in possession of marijuana, I'm making a note of her seat number and the authorities will apprehend her when we land. 'Gee, that's pretty good,' replied the first man. Once again, the Policeman sent Sniffer to search the aisles.
