CAT AND MOUSE (continued): • Many expressions are ingrained in our vocabulary when we are only knee high to a grasshopper (very small.) Some are kept out of earshot of children because they may not be appropriate for young ears! (Those won’t be in Tidbits!)

• While little children may be cute as a bug’s ear (the smaller they come, the cuter they are), some are bullheaded (stubborn) and make a beeline (go toward) to trouble. After all, when the cat’s away, the mice will play (people misbehaving without supervision).

• Sometimes supervision is in the hands of the biggest frog in the pond (most important person in a group), while at other times it may be given to the leader who is as calm as a toad in the sun (calm and content). Either way, if there is conflict, it may be necessary to separate the sheep from the goats (distinguish the good from the bad).

• When conflict arises, there are times when people act like animals. A dumb cluck (person acting stupid) may be pigheaded (stupidly stubborn) and try to find a scapegoat (innocent person who is blamed) when things go wrong.

• A bullheaded (obstinate) person may try to butt heads (to argue fiercely) with a sheepish (embarrassed) friend only to find that she will pull the wool over his eyes ( fool him).

• It is easy to get fleeced (swindled) if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to you and just ignore obvious problems. If you make yourself a sitting duck (easy target) you may end up in a harebrained scheme (foolish plan).

• It is much better to have all your ducks in a row (be organized), than to go down a rabbit hole (enter a fantasy world) when you need to make decisions.

• Hold on if you think we are barking up the wrong tree (have the wrong idea), fantasy worlds can be fun and engaging. Just remember that it’s a dog-eat-dog world (there is a lot of competition in life) out there and you need to be careful not to be constantly chasing your own tail (working hard but not getting anything done)!

• If organizing gives you a burr under your saddle (causes you to be irritated), remember that the early bird gets the worm (start early so that you have the best chance for success).

• Seeing an opportunity to improve your life or your situation, sometimes requires walking on eggshells (being careful not to offend others) or a somewhat opposite situation; taking the bull by the horns (tackling the problem).

• You sure don’t need to be told that you are not the sharpest quill on the porcupine (not very smart) if you are having a hard time with an assignment. Most people realize when they struggle and have butterflies in their stomachs (feel nervous) when they have bitten off more than they can chew (taken on too hard or big a task).

• Speaking of chewing, when you are hungry as a bear (really hungry), it is usually best to take your time eating anyway. Don’t be silly and wolf down your food (eat too fast) or you may find yourself sick as a horse (very sick)!

• Hold your horses (be patient) when you need to wait for your food, whether at your home, someone else’s home or a restaurant. Be a good egg (nice person) not a bad egg (bad person) and avoid fighting like cats and dogs (fierce argument). Don’t bite the hand that feeds you (harm someone who is helping you)!

The first rule of feeding cats is feed them what they will eat. The second rule of feeding cats is feed them the best diet you can find. So, how do you know what to feed? There are so many diets on the market these days with so many claims, promotional endorsements and pseudo-science that even a veterinarian has a hard time evaluating the science behind the diet.

Many diets appeal to fads and the vegetarian myth but the cat is an obligate carnivore.

Most of what is on cat food labels is misleading and only tells part of the story. The label reports crude protein not digestible protein, crude fat not digestible fat, there is usually no mention of the % of carbohydrates, there is no mention of the type of fiber – soluble vs insoluble and there is no mention of the calories per serving (new for 2011 will be calories per serving – the first big change in pet food labeling to help the consumer). The list of ingredients is not a true reflection of what the food actually consists of.

The first four ingredients are what make up the food’s nutritional content. Misleading terms and percentage of ingredients mask the true quality rating of the food.

Cats eat protein and fat because they are obligate carnivores! Natural and/or raw food diets can be a problem with contamination versus hunting cats with fresh kill and normal flora. Natural food diets should not be a spin-off of human natural food thinking (including apple, cranberry, rosemary, etc.) but should emphasize quality protein and fat sources. Quality cat foods have verifiable analyses and feeding trials that prove the food is healthy for cats. Reading a label does not always give you answers that you need to make a good decision.

• On Jan. 13, 1128, Pope Honorius II grants a papal sanction to the military order known as the Knights Templar, declaring it to be an army of God. The selfimposed mission of the Knights Templar was to protect Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land.

• On Jan. 14, 1860, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee of Thirty-Three submits a proposed constitutional amendment protecting slavery in all areas where it already existed. The proposed measure was not enough to stem the tide of seceding states.

• On Jan. 15, 1870, the first recorded use of a donkey to represent the Democratic Party appears in Harper’s Weekly, drawn by political illustrator Thomas Nast.

Four years later, Nast originated the use of an elephant to symbolize the Republican Party in a Harper’s Weekly cartoon.

• On Jan. 18, 1882, A.A. Milne, creator of Winniethe-Pooh, is born. Years later when his son, Christopher Robin, was born, Milne used the boy’s stuffed animals as inspiration for the stories “Winnie-thePooh” and “The House at Pooh Corner.”

Q. Who’s Birthday is it Anyway?

A. In our rush for shopping, cooking, partying, traveling, etc., it’s so easy to forget “The Reason for the Season”. Let’s just pause for a moment or two, and in the quietude of our hearts, wish “Happy Birthday” to the Christ Child.

Q. Why do some people put an “X” in front of the “------mas” of “Christmas” ?

A. I don’t know. Maybe they’re Cindy Rose just not thinking; too “busy”, or too “stressed out”, and “accidentally” take “Christ” out of “Christmas? I just don’t like that “X”.

Recently, I found a painting that has vivid colors of the Season. In it Santa is standing next to the fireplace in a darkened room lit by a single candle. The children must have wanted to give Santa a little light for his most important activities that night. Santa has noticed the Nativity on the nearby table. He’s holding the porcelain Christ Child in the manger, deep in thought. A poem on the back of the picture sets the scene, and shares what I like to call “Santa’s Prayer”: The Spirit of Christmas
