• A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal that freezes around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides, and although two snowflakes may be very similar, none are exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather produces very fine, powdery snowflakes, while temperatures near the freezing point cause much larger and more complex ones. The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph (5 km/hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it to the ground. • The Guinness World Book of Records cites the world’s largest snowflake ever recorded as one that fell in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. This giant was 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick. • Although you might think every big snowstorm is a blizzard, the National Weather Service has a specific definition of one. WINTRY FACTS (continued): excess of 35 mph (56 km/hr) and visibilities of less than ¼ mile (.4 km) for at least three hours.” • Those folks who are afraid of snow are called chionophobics. Their greatest fear is of being snowbound or stranded. A forecast of a winter storm can bring on cold sweats, racing heartbeat, and panic attacks. • The wind chill factor is the temperature felt on exposed skin due to wind. The wind chill index was developed by two Antarctic explorers in the 1940s, who experimented with how fast water froze in differing temps and wind speeds. This was then compared with the rate that the body loses heat. If the temperature is 0° F (-18° C) and the wind is blowing 30 mph (48 km/hr), it will feel like the temperature is -26° F (-32° C). Skin exposed to 0° F and only 15 mph (24 km/hr) will experience a wind chill of -19° F (-28° C) can freeze in as little as 30 minutes. • Hypothermia is a very real danger in many parts of the country this time of year. This condition occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95° F (35° C). As the temperature decreases, the body automatically directs blood away from the skin, increasing flow to the vital organs. Since the heart and brain are the most sensitive to cold, a slowdown occurs in their electrical activity. Thinking and reasoning are affected, and the person has the desire to sleep as delirium sets in. When the body’s temperature reaches about 82° F (28° C), the heart rate substantially slows down, and if the temperature reaches 68° F (20° C) brain function stops. About half of all hypothermia deaths are people over 60 years old, with 75% of these occurring in men. • It’s been a long time since the record for a single day’s snowfall was set in the United States. Back in December of 1913, Georgetown, Colorado received 63 inches (1.6 meters) in one day. Canada’s record is much newer – 57 inches (1.45 meters) fell in Tahtsa Lake West, British Columbia in 1999. January of 1911 was a record-setting month in Tamarack, California – 390 inches (9.9 meters) of snow in a single month! Valdez, Alaska is the snowiest place in the U.S., averaging 326 inches (8.3 meters) a year. • Bethel, Maine’s claim to fame is tall snow creatures! In 1999, the community planned for five months and labored 15 days to create Angus, a 113’ 7” (34.63 meter) tall snowman, the world’s tallest, overtaking the previous record set by the citizens of Yamagata, Japan, of 96’ 7”. Nine years later, Bethel rivaled their own record with the world’s tallest snow woman, a 122’ 1” (37 Continued on page 9

The Gem Advisor Amber

Scott McQueen If you watched the movie Jurassic Park you probably know that amber is fossilized pine tree resin and that some amber have insects trapped inside. In the movie the scientists extract dinosaur DNA from a mosquito. It makes a good story but it does not comport with the geological history of the earth. A mosquito trapped in amber could not contain dinosaur DNA because most amber is too young. It’s only 25 to 50 million years old and the dinosaurs were supposed to have lived and died over 65 million years ago. But don’t let the unlikely story spoil your interest in this most unusual gemstone. The fact is more than 1,000 extinct species of insects have been identified in amber. Amber is mined today in the Baltic states and the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic amber is older and is the preferred stone. Baltic amber is likely to have insect inclusions. But get this: amber prices can range from as little as $20 to as much as $40,000 or more. Scott McQueen is the owner of Pinetree Jewelers, Parker’s oldest jewelry store established in 1976. It is located at 11028 S. Pikes Peak Drive in Parker. For more information on gemstones or jewelry of any kind call 303.841.2666

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Firewood Tips Q: Last year, we ordered a cord of firewood, but the weather was so warm that we barely used half of it in our fireplace. Is the remaining half still good to use this winter? -- Frank in Marlborough, Mass. A: Stored correctly, firewood can last for several seasons if need be, so your remaining half-cord should be fine for use this winter. It has continued to season and is probably much drier than it was last year, meaning it will likely catch and burn faster. Large amounts of firewood that will be stored through the winter and into the next cold season generally should be kept several feet from the house at minimum. The wood should be kept off the ground -- loaded on a pallet or a storage rack -- and stacked evenly. This creates good airflow between the logs, allows it to dry quickly after a rain storm, and reduces the number of insects that take up residence in the stack, as well as discourages rodents from creating nests in it. How much firewood you should purchase and store each year is entirely up to you. I’ve often passed homes in the Northeastern countryside that have several cords of neatly cut wood stacked underneath the crawlspace of outlying barns, sheds, or sometimes even the houses themselves. In suburban and urban areas, this is probably not acceptable to the neighbors or may violate local ordinances. Plan to have no more than two winters’ worth of firewood stacked near your house. The amount depends on how much you use your fireplace, and whether it is a necessity to warm the home or just a decorative element. HOME TIP: Order firewood from a source as close to your home as possible, to prevent pests -- particularly tree-killing insects -- moving from one area or region to another. Send your questions or tips to ask@thisisahammer. com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

WINTRY FACTS (continued): meters) creation named Olympia. Olympia sported eyelashes made from skis and lips fashioned from bright red painted tires. Her arms were crafted from pine trees. • Canadians are experts at making snow angels. In 2004, students, parents, and teachers from 60 schools in the London, Ontario district hit the ground to create 15,851 snow angels simultaneously. In 2011, 22,022 folks in 130 separate locations in Nova Scotia produced the most angels in multiple locations. • Chamonix, France hosted the first Winter Olympics for 11 days in early 1924. Sixteen nations sent a total of 258 athletes to “The International Winter Sports Week” to participate in 16 different events. Finland and Norway took the majority of the 43 medals, Norway with 17 and Finland, 11. The United States took home four medals, and Canada took home one, the gold for hockey, the first of a streak. Out of the first seven Olympic winter games, Canada took the gold medal in hockey six times. • Squaw Valley, California was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the skiers were more than a little nervous as the competition approached. The reason? There was no snow! A local Native American tribe, the Piute, were recruited to do a “snow dance,” and a miraculous storm produced the snow needed to save the Games. • More than 150 people are killed in the world’s avalanches each year. Although many are small slides of dry powdery snow that don’t create much damage, when large slabs of snow loosen from a mountainside, they can advance down a slope at speeds of 80 mph (130 km/hr) within five seconds. About 93% of those caught in an avalanche can survive if rescued within 15 minutes. Just 30 minutes later, that survival rate drops to 20%-30%. After two hours, the rate is almost nil.

Ask the Dentist

by Dennis L. Burgner, D.D.S. Master, Academy of General Dentistry Q. My 7 year-old daughter has no cavities. Should she have sealants placed to protect her teeth, or can she just brush and floss? Q. It depends on several factors. You and your daughter can control some factors, such as effective oral hygiene, diet (sweet snacking), and regular preventive dental visits. However, you cannot control the hereditary anatomy of her teeth. That is, some children (and adult) teeth have deep pits and fissured grooves (“groovy teeth”). It can become nearly impossible for the toothbrush bristle to reach that last little “sugar bug” entrenched deep into the deep pit or fissure. This plus even a little “sugar” in the diet from processed foods can set up decay. Research has shown that almost everybody has a 95% chance of getting cavities in these areas. A well-placed sealant can protect the “groovy” tooth surface from bacteria and acid attack caused by sweet snacking. R. What is a sealant? Q. A. sealant is a thin plastic film bonded to the chewing surfaces of the tooth. The sealant fills in the deep pits and grooves where bacteria can hide. The “sugar bugs” have fewer places set up shop, which prevents decay. It’s important to note that a sealant is only effective in the pits and groove areas, not the smooth surfaces of the tooth that are easier to clean. Q. Q. Are they effective? Q. Yes! About 80% of decay occurs in the deep pits and grooves of the chewing surfaces. Combined with twice-daily brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste, healthy nutrition, and twice-yearly visits to the dentist, properly applied sealants are 100 percent effective in preventing cavities in these areas. Sealants have been described as “the greatest advance in preventive dentistry since fluoride”. R. Q. Aren’t sealants just for kids? Q. No! Adults can have “groovy teeth” too. They can protect any areas of adult pits and fissures – that do not already have a filling present.

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is home to the ancient ruins of the most famous Mayan city, Chichen Itza. Here are some enlightening facts about this site, named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. • One of the largest Mayan cities, Chichen Itza covered an area of at least 1.9 square miles (5 sq. km). It was an active urban center of the Mayan empire from 750 to 1200 A.D.

• The most familiar structure at Chichen Itza is the Kukulkan Pyramid, also known as El Castillo. This 98-foot (30-m) tall ceremonial temple is a specimen of this civilization’s development of the 365-day calendar. It has 365 steps rising to the top, with each of its four sides containing 91 steps and the top platform making the 365th. Enormous sculptures of a serpents’ heads are at the base of the pyramid on the northern staircase, the principal sacred path to the top. The temple is geographically positioned so that twice a year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, at sunset, a shadow falls on the pyramid that makes it appear that the serpent Kukulkan is making its way down the stairway. Seven interlocking triangles form a serrated line that resembles the serpent’s tail.

Parker Rd

• The ancient Mayan civilization displayed brilliant mathematical and astronomical skills. They were keen observers of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, even predicting solar eclipses from their state-of-the-art observatory, El Caracol, which still stands at the site today.

• El Castillo was not the first temple to occupy the site. Built sometime between 1000 and 1200 A.D., it was constructed on the foundation of previous temples. Archaeological digs in the 1930s uncovered another staircase under the north side of the pyramid, and continuing the dig, found another temple buried below. • Near the pyramid is a large ball court, 554 feet (168 meters) long and 231 feet (70 meters) wide. It was here that Mayan men played pok ta pok, a game in which players hit or threw a 12-lb. (5.4kg) rubber ball through a hoop mounted high on the wall, 23 feet (7 meters) above the ground. Archaeologists believe the losers were put to death. • Nearly everyone has heard the Mayan prophecy of the end of the world occurring in December of 2012. The prediction is that the great warrior serpent Kukulkan will rise from the ground under the ball court and end the world on the 22nd of the month. • Very large gatherings were held at the Temple of the Warriors, an enormous complex with a large stepped pyramid, four platforms, and 200 carved columns. Thousands of artifacts have been recovered from the area, including gold, carved jade, pottery, obsidian, rubber, flint, and human skeletons. • It’s evident that human sacrifices were part of the culture. Chichen Itza, which translates “mouth of the well,” was settled around two wells, one a sacred place, and the other for everyday use. Large quantities of bones and ceremonial objects have been recovered from the sacred well during excavation. • About 1.2 million tourists visit Chichen Itza every year. Until 2006, visitors were allowed to walk through the buildings’ ruins and climb the pyramids. However, after a woman fell to her death from El Castillo that year, people are no longer permitted on the structures.

Q: I love MTV’s original comedy “Awkward.” I missed some episodes of season two. Is it on DVD yet? Also, where there be a third season? -- Amy T., via e-mail A: You’re in luck on both counts. Aside from being able to watch full episodes on hulu.com and mtv.com, seasons one and two are available on DVD. The show has been granted a super-size season three, which will consist of 20 episodes instead of the previous 12 episodes each of the previous two seasons. Look for season three to premiere in summer 2013. *** Q: I just heard about the death of one of my favorite directors, Tony Scott. I couldn’t find any information on the definite cause or reason for his death. Do you know what happened? -- Felix S., Vancouver, British Columbia A: The results of Tony’s autopsy were recently released, with the cause of death being multiple bluntforce injuries, which were sustained when he jumped off a Los Angeles bridge on Aug. 19. The official ruling is suicide, as no foul play was suspected or discovered. There was also no evidence of an inoperable brain tumor -- as some sources were citing as the reason he killed himself -- putting to rest those rumors that his family vehemently denied from the get-go. Tony, who was 68 at the time of his death, had recently announced his intent to develop a “Top Gun” sequel, and was with Tom Cruise just days prior to his death scouting locations for the movie. There is no word yet on whether the movie will be made without Tony. *** Q: “Assassin’s Creed” is one of my favorite video games, and my roommate heard that it’s going to be made into a movie. Is that true? -- Douglas W., via e-mail A: Development of a big-screen version of the popular video game is moving forward, with Michael Fassbender set to star as Desmond Miles, a man who comes from a long line of assassins but tries to lie low and maintain a more common lifestyle as a bartender. Since it’s still early in the development process, there’s no word on co-stars or a release date. However, I can tell you that it will be shot in 3-D. *** Q: My husband and I are curious as to what happened to Lisa, who was one of the “Ice Road Truckers” on the History Channel last year. We’re hoping she didn’t crash. -- Bonnie and George H., via e-mail A: Lisa Kelly is alive and well, and taking a year off. Producer Thom Beers told a group of reporters: “We offered her a contract to return, and she chose not to. (We’d) love to have her, (but) she’s taking a year off. The thing we liked about her more than anyone else -she’s the one person of them all who showed real fear. I wish her luck, and I wish she was back.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. Am I taking on too much risk? Although 2012 has generally been a pretty good year for investors, we’ve certainly seen periods of considerable volatility. During these times, did you find yourself constantly fretting about big drops in your portfolio value? In fact, have you consistently experienced this type of worry throughout your years as an investor? If so, you might be taking on too much risk for your individual risk tolerance. Review your holdings to determine if you can lower your risk level without jeopardizing your overall investment strategy. Am I investing too conservatively? Just as you can take on too much investment risk, you can also go to the other extreme by investing too conservatively. If your portfolio contains a preponderance of investments that offer significant preservation of principal but very little in the way of growth potential, you may be endangering your chances of accumulating the resources you’ll need to achieve your long-term goals. Am I contributing as much as I can afford to my retirement plans? If you have access to an employersponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b), consider yourself fortunate. Your plan has the potential to grow on a tax-deferred basis, and you typically contribute pre-tax dollars — the more you put in, the lower your annual taxable income. Plus, your employer may match part of your contributions. So if you’ve been under-funding your retirement plan, ratchet up your funding in 2013. At the same time, you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA; if so, try to “max out” on it. A traditional IRA grows tax deferred while a Roth IRA can grow tax free, provided you meet certain conditions. Am I adequately protecting my income — and my family? Over time, you’ll experience many changes in your life — marriage, children, new job, new home, etc. Most, if not all, of these changes will require you to make sure you have adequate life insurance in place to help guard your family’s future, should anything happen to you. Furthermore, to help replace your income should you become disabled, you may well need to purchase an adequate amount of disability income insurance. Do I need professional help? As the above questions indicate, maintaining control of your financial situation can be challenging — especially if you try to do it all on your own. You might benefit from working with a financial professional — someone who can analyze your situation objectively and make recommendations based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific goals. Before the clock runs out on 2012, take the time to ask yourself the above questions. The answers may well spur you to take positive action in 2013.
