At this time of year, Christmas trees, evergreen wreaths, garland and more are displayed all around us. This Tidbits examines some fascinating facts about evergreens.

• Most people only think of conifers like pine, fir, cedar and spruce trees when they think of the term “evergreen.” This is not incorrect because most conifers qualify as evergreens, but many additional plants that are not conifers are evergreens as well. Evergreens have “foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.”

• The word “conifer” comes from the Latin words conus (cone) and ferre (to bear). The word conifer literally means “cone bearing.” While many conifers are evergreen, some are not. Larches and bald cypress trees are conifers that lose their needles every fall.

• There are thousands of species of evergreen trees, shrubs and smaller plants. Just within the pine family there are 115 species. While pines and many other evergreens have needle-like foliage, some have leaves, fronds (ferns and palms) and other types of foliage. • Even though the name implies it, evergreens are not always green. Many evergreens actually have foliage that is red, brown, yellow and other colors. turn the page for more!

EVERGEEN (continued): • Some popular evergreens not previously mentioned are: hemlock, laurel, holly, eucalyptus, rhododendron, magnolia, palm, juniper and redwood. Even some oaks are evergreen. • Evergreens are found in hot and cold, humid and dry climates on every continent but Antarctica. • Goose Island State Park in Aransas County in southern Texas is the home of the “Big Tree.” Named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak in 1969, this tree is thought to be one of the largest in America. The large evergreen oak is estimated to be over 1,000 years old, has a circumference of 35 feet (10.7 m), is 44 feet (13.4 m) tall and has a crown spread of 90 feet (27.4 m). Live oaks are known for their massive spread, and there are many in the Southern states around old historic homes. This Texas tree is truly impressive. • Washington, the only state named after a president, is famous for its rainy weather and large forests of evergreen trees. Nicknamed the “Evergreen State,” western Washington actually has rain forests in the Olympic Mountains. • Evergreen Point Bridge between Seattle and the eastern shore of Lake Washington is the longest floating bridge in the world. It was built with a line of concrete pontoons linked by cables and attached to ordinary bridges on each end. The total length of the bridge is 7,578 feet (2310 m). It was constructed this way because the bottom of Lake Washington is too muddy for a standard bridge. The bridge contributed greatly to the growth of the eastern shore, with cities like Bellevue and Redmond. (These cities contribute a lot of “green” to the Washington economy thanks to companies like computer giant Microsoft being located there.) • Most evergreen Christmas trees are not harvested from forests. In fact, 98 percent of the trees sold on holiday lots are grown on tree farms. Areas close to national forests with permit programs for cutting down live trees do have quite a following of folks who like to snowshoe or hike to get their trees, but the Christmas tree lots definitely corner the market on sales.

1. Vaccinations 2. Treating with Anti-parasitics (deworming/topical flea/ tick control) 3. Keeping Cats Indoors (and Safe!) 4. And finally, Nutrition Vaccinations: Before universal vaccination (starting around 1970) for feline panleukopenia (distemper, cat flu, etc.), 20-40% of the cat population died from this disease every year. Today with a large percentage of companion cats vaccinated this disease is rarely seen except in unvaccinated outdoor and feral cats. Vaccination was and is the major breakthrough in extending the lifespan of domestic cats. Deworming and Control of External Parasites: Internal and external parasites weaken newborns to the point that many died in the first months of life. Older cats became chronically debilitated and died sooner if parasites were not treated. Routine deworming and external parasite control has become commonplace and parasite diseases are much less common.

Cindy Rose, AAMS® www.edwardjones.com

In the last 40 years cats life expectancy has almost doubled and the life expectancy of dogs has remained about the same. What are the most significant factors in this interesting fact? Most people would say that better nutrition is the primary reason for the extended life span but that is not true. The top four reasons for doubling the lifespan in domestic cats are: (spay/neuter and improved medical care are also relevant).

Indoor Cats: Indoor cats are not subjected to cars and trucks, lawn poisons (insecticides and herbicides), catfights (the spread of infectious disease), getting lost and all the things in an outdoor environment can put your cat in peril. Indoor cats live longer!

Finally, Nutrition: Cats are obligate carnivores (they need to eat meat as the major source of nutrition). Feeding cats is now a ‘hot topic’ because it appears that the food manufacturers have marketing campaigns designed to make cats omnivores (animals that can eat meats, grains or both). Most feline diets are designed for the convenience of cat owners and they don’t always meet the nutritional needs of cats. There is about to be a dramatic change in thinking about feline diets. Cat Specialist is starting a project to evaluate current commercial diets to find out which ones are best. Dr. James K. Is Your Cat Bored?

Name: CRESSIDA #A0596252 2 year old spayed female, brown tabby and white, long hair cat looking for a good home.

We don’t think of our cats as “captive” animals, but in truth they are. Indoor-only cats are captive in our homes and can become bored, leading to “sickness behaviors.” How do you know your cat is bored? Inappropriate litterbox behaviors, aggression, decreased food or water intake, vomiting/diarrhea, lethargy and changes in general grooming CAN be signs of sickness behaviors due to the stress of captivity. If your cat is experiencing any of these behaviors, Cat Specialist can help you determine whether they are due to a medical condition. If your cat is medically sound, we are always available to talk feline enrichment with you. From cat trees to toys, there are many different smells and sounds that can break up the kitty doldrums!

The tree is presented shortly after Thanksgiving to be displayed in the Blue Room at the White House. The tree must be 18.5 feet (5.6 m) tall and fit through a doorway that is 58 inches (1.47 m) wide. • The National Christmas Tree is a live tree in Washington, D.C., that is lit each year at the start of ongoing ceremonies called the “Christmas Pageant of Peace.” The beautiful evergreen tree is a Colorado blue spruce that was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania, in 1978. The tree was the perfect size and shape, had no disease and was growing in similar soil conditions to what it would be living in at its new home in Washington. • The tree was originally a Mother’s Day gift to Mrs. William E. Myers in York. When National Park Service (NPS) employees asked the Myers family about donating the tree, they agreed. Mrs. Myers even fed the workers homemade soup as they prepared “her” tree to become the nation’s tree.

• Washington, D.C., is also home to another famous Christmas tree. The Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as the “People’s Tree,” has been harvested from one of the country’s national forests since 1969. Staff at the National Forest Service headquarters work with national forests’ staffs across the country to select a well-shaped evergreen tree, with the final decision made by the Architect of the Capitol. • It is a huge honor, and many celebrations take place in the state chosen to send the Capitol Christmas tree to the nation’s capitol. The 2011 tree was sent from the Stanislaus National Forest near Sonora, California. The tree traveled about 4,500 miles (7242 km) on its journey to stand at a place of honor for many Americans and others to see.

• The first National Christmas Tree was not a live tree but was also an evergreen. The President of Middlebury College in Vermont, President Calvin Coolidge’s home state, donated a 48-foot (14.6 m) balsam fir to be placed on the Ellipse in December 1923. This “first” tree was cut down and sent to Washington. President Coolidge flipped the switch to light the tree on Christmas Eve.

For Tidbits of Douglas County! Scott McQueen Once upon a time a long time ago in places far away this gemstone was thought to bring good fortune to the wearer and even considered to be a holy stone. Turquoise was used as an inlay in the grave furnishings in Egyptian tombs dating from approximately 3000 BC. In the ancient Persian kingdom (present day Iran) turquoise was worn around the neck or wrist as a protection from unnatural death. The Persians believed that if the turquois changed color it meant that danger was at hand. The scientists later debunked this speculation and proved that color change can be caused by light, dust, cosmetics, or the acidity of the skin. The Aztecs in Mexico, believing the stone was holy, once decorated their ceremonial masks with turquoise. You may have jewelry made with turquoise created by the Indians of North America. They still believe that the sky-blue gemstone creates a direct connection between the sky and the sea. The most impressive turquoises come from deposits in the north of Iran. Deposits are also found in the USA, Mexico, Israel, China, and Afghanistan.

You Want Me to Eat What? Over the years, it’s been quite common for my clients to express similar struggles and questions concerning the “why’s & wherefores” of nutrition and food. Honestly, for the most part, the answer is pretty basic. While some individuals have particular needs, or health issues which require special diets, the rest of us fall into a “normal” category when it comes to nutrition. Here’s why. Think of a small infant for a moment. How many times per day does an infant eat? Every couple of hours, right? When your metabolism is working at optimum efficiency, you should become hungry every couple of hours. Perhaps the most common, detrimental mistake most people make is only eating once or twice per day! Many people think this actually helps with weight or body fat loss, simply because they aren’t consuming many calories on a daily basis. The bad news is, you’re messing with your normal functions, as well as, your blood sugar and your metabolism. You’ll experience energy “highs” and “lows” throughout the day, caused by low blood sugar levels. Then, most likely, you’ll over eat during your 1-2 meals. The good news is, you can correct this! HOW? See next week’s column... Please feel free to ask questions or send comments to: jenny@straightupfitness.net

Cut your electric bill 10% without ever noticing it! Most people don't know that TVs, DVD players, game consoles, computers and chargers for cell phones and other electronic devices can draw energy 24/7, even when idle. The typical American home has 40 of these electronic devices, continuously drawing power. The U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley Lab says they account for almost 10% of home energy use. Here are some easy ways to cut this cost. Unplug After Charging. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says one of the best ways to cut costs is to simply unplug devices as soon as they're charged. That's because standard chargers keep feeding power to a device after it's fully charged. They also draw small amounts of energy even when no device is attached! Set on Energy Saving. Configure the energy settings on computers and monitors so they power down after you stop using them. The EPA says these setting could save up to $85 a year.

Holly – Expanded Duties Dental Assistant (E.D.D.A) I have been in dentistry for over 25 years. I started back in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a dentist who was in private practice. I started as his receptionist. When we were in between patients he would pull up a chair and do a little one on one instruction, it didn’t hurt that he taught at the University of Pittsburgh as a Professor. I worked for him for over 7 years and then moved to Colorado. I moved to Colorado in 1989 just about the time my two nieces were starting school, and have been here for 23 years. I loved being involved in Holly their lives. The youngest had just got married in May 2011. In 1995 after I had moved here from Pennsylvania, I was lucky enough to work with a Dentist who had seen promise and potential in me. He offered me an opportunity to enroll in the University of Colorado’s Expanded Duties Dental Assisting Program. Of course I took it!, and received my E.D.D.A Certification. I have seen and been a part of many avenue’s of dentistry but I must say, I love the cosmetic aspect. To follow a patient from the time they walk into our office very nervous, afraid and sometimes embarrassed, until the final day, is so self-fulfilling. Winning that patient’s trust is crucial and to know that I had a part in this new individual’s smile is unbelievable! Please see our ad on page 7 of Tidbits

As you know, the holiday season can be joyous, hectic, celebratory — and expensive. And while you certainly enjoy hosting family gathCindy Rose erings and giving presents to your loved ones, you’ll find these things even more pleasurable if they don’t add a lot more weight to your debt load. And that’s why you’ll want to follow some smart money-management techniques over the next few weeks. To begin with, try to establish realistic budgets for both your entertaining and your gift giving. When you host family and friends, don’t go overboard on your expenditures. Your guests will still appreciate your efforts, which, with a little creativity, can create a welcoming and fun experience for everyone. As a guiding principal, keep in mind these words attributed to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the famous German poet and philosopher: “What you can do without, do without.” Set a budget and stick to it. And the same rule applies to your gifting. You don’t need to find the most expensive presents, or overwhelm recipients with the sheer volume of your gifts. This is especially true if you, like so many people, have been affected by the tough economy. Everyone you know will understand that gifts don’t have to be lavish to be meaningful. Furthermore, by sticking to a budget, you won’t be tempted to dip into your long-term investments to pay for fabulous parties or mountains of gifts. It’s never a good idea to tap long-term investments for short-term needs, but can be especially bad when your investment prices are down, as they may well be this year. So, if you want to stick to a budget but you don’t want to raid your investments, how can you pay for your holiday season expenses? If you can spread out your purchases, you may be able to pay for them from your normal cash flow. But if that’s not possible, you might want to consider “plastic” — your credit card. Using your credit card does not, by itself, need to amount to a financial setback, especially if you’ve chosen a card that offers favorable terms and you’ve already shown the discipline not to over-use that card. Just try to minimize your credit card usage over the holidays and pay off your card as soon as you can. Of course, you can make your holiday season much easier, financially speaking, if you’ve set up a holiday fund to cover your various expenses. While it’s too late to set up such a fund this year, why not get an early start on the 2012 holiday season? All you need to do is put away some money each month into an easily accessible account, separate from your everyday accounts. You don’t have to put in a great deal, but you do need to be consistent, which is why you may want to have the money moved automatically, once a month, from your checking or savings account to your holiday fund. When next year’s holiday season rolls around, you might be pleasantly surprised by how much you’ve accumulated. But for now, following some common-sense money management practices can help you get through the holiday season in financial shape — and that type of result can get your new year off to a positive start.

Malachi 3:11 (KJV) And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,…Many Christians today fail to realize the awesome privilege it is to have a financial covenant that is exercised and in place for us when we tithe. That means that we are connected to the heavenly economy not the worldly economy. If you are a part of God’s heavenly economy then you don’t have to lie awake at night worrying about a depression or a recession, because they don’t exist in heaven. While the rest of the world is being tormented by the fear of financial failure, you and I can sleep like babies at night. I like what Jesse Duplantis said about it, “I refuse to take part in the recession.” Knowing that we have a financial covenant with God, we can stand firmly on that covenant and say, “Get out of here Satan, you are rebuked. We are tither’s and the Word of God says you cannot devour our money. You can’t devour our health!” As we give to God the first 10% of our increase, the Word tells us that it is Holy before God and that He blesses it. And we know that what God has blessed, can’t be cursed praise God! Well I have been tithing now for 3 years and I am still not as prosperous as Joe sinner down the street. I’m not sure this tithing thing works to well. Interestingly enough, the people in Malachi’s day said exactly the same thing. They said it is useless to serve God and what profit is it if we keep His ordinances? It appears to us that the proud and the arrogant are happy and favored, that evildoers are exalted and prosper. (Mal 3:14-15) But God heard those words and His response was that their words were stout against Him. Why is that? Because they were words of fear, doubt and unbelief. They are a counterfeit to faith, they work they same way but in an opposite direction. When we tithe, we tithe in faith because that is the only way to please God. And if you don’t have faith that God will prosper you then it is time to get your Bible out again and start to study all the promises that He has made to you as a tither. God’s Word is always true, so when you tithe, tithe in faith, believing that if you keep up your end, God will keep up His end. And guess what, when you do it like that, God calls you His special treasure, His special possession. Malachi 3:17 (AMP) And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels (My special possession, My peculiar treasure). And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him. The next time you tithe, drop your tithe in the bucket, release your faith, stand on God’s promises for the tither and receive the blessings that belong to God’s special treasures, His tithers! Monarch Ski and Snowboard Area

When we moved to Colorado in the mid nineties, my wife and I searched for a place to ski. Growing up in the Swiss Alps, I was looking for a place that compares. A friend introduced us to the Monarch Ski and Snowboard Area, which is located on U.S. Highway 50 in Southern Colorado. It’s twenty miles west of Salida, Colorado, on Monarch Pass. Monarch has 54 trails, two terrain parks, and an ExtremeTerrain area called Mirkwood. The ski area sits on the continental divide at the southern end of the Sawatch Range along the border between Gunnison and Chaffee counties surrounded by the beautiful San Isabel National Forest. My first impression was “WOW”! After 15 years, I still say “WOW”. The snow is fantastic, the trails are awesome, and the vistas are breathtaking. I took the Monarch picture at the continental divide. You can find slopes and trails for any level of skier. Monarch offers a very family-friendly atmosphere, low key, laid back charm. They offer exceptional programs for children of all ages. One thing you do not have in Monarch, is the stress that comes with worrying about the kids. After all these years, Monarch is our most favorite place to ski.

This is probably the funniest first date story ever, first date or not!!! We have all had bad dates but this takes the cake.

There was absolutely no question as to why her tale took the prize! She said it was midwinter...Snowing and quite cold... And the guy had taken her skiing in the mountains outside Salt Lake City , Utah . It was a day trip (no overnight). They were strangers, after all, and had never met before. The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon. They were driving back down the mountain, when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra latte. They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for awhile. Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her go beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car. They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started. In the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking. All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation. Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her buttocks were firmly glued against the car's fender. Thoughts of tongues frozen to poles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem, due to the extreme cold. Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor of the moment, she answered her date's concerns about "What is taking so long" with a reply that indeed, she was "Freezing her butt off" and in need of some assistance! He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma. Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal! Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free. So, as she looked the other way, her first-time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender. As the audience screamed in laughter, she took the Tonight Show prize hands down. Oh, and how did the first date turn out? He became her husband and was sitting next to her on the Leno show.
