ISLANDS by Kathy Wolfe
Did you know that one in six people lives on an island? This week, Tidbits takes a little island getaway, bringing you facts about “any land mass completely surrounded by water.” • Not all islands are alike! Continental islands lie on the shelf of a continent, for example, Greenland, which lies on the shelf of North America, and Great Britain on that of Europe. Oceanic islands do not sit on a continental shelf. Most, such as the Hawaiian Islands, were formed by volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Islands, a 137-island chain, are the exposed peaks of a massive undersea mountain range. They were visited by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778, and he dubbed them the Sandwich Islands after his friend, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. •
Each of the eight main Hawaiian Islands has a nickname. The largest, Hawaii, is of course, the Big Island. Next in size, Maui, is the Valley Isle, followed by Oahu, the Gathering Place. Fourth in size, Kauai is the Garden Isle, Molokai is the Friendly Isle, Lanai is nicknamed the Pineapple Isle, Niihau is the Forbidden Isle, and the smallest of the eight, Kaho’olawe is the Target Isle. ISLANDS (continued): • Although Australia is completely surrounded by water, geographically it is considered a continent rather than an island. It’s not only too big to be formally classified as an island, it also sits on its own tectonic plate. Because of this, the title of world’s largest island goes to Greenland, a continental island lying on North America’s continental shelf. • Located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, Greenland has an area of 836,330 square miles (2,166,086 sq. km), with 81% of that area covered by an ice sheet. If that ice sheet were to melt away completely, the sea level of the world would rise by more than 23 feet (7 m). Most of the island’s 57,600 people live along the coasts, the only areas that are ice-free. It’s the most sparsely populated country in the world. Although Greenland’s main export is shrimp, the island is rich in natural resources, including zinc, lead, iron, gold, and platinum. Even diamonds are mined there. •
Contrast Greenland’s population of 57,600 in 836,330 square miles with that of Sumatra. Sumatra’s area equals about 21% of Greenland’s, yet this island is home to 50 million people! Located in Indonesia, Sumatra is the world’s sixth largest island, but is the world’s largest volcanic island.
• Just south of the Arctic Circle is the second largest volcanic island, Iceland, home to the world’s largest concentration of geysers. Over 14% of its surface is covered by lakes and glaciers, and there are 130 volcanic mountains on the island. Iceland has the second-highest quality of life in the world, as well as one of the world’s highest life expectancies.

• The Guinness Book of Records lists Bishop Rock as the world’s smallest island with a building on it. It’s 151 feet (46 m) long by 52.5 feet (16 m) wide and is situated at the end of Britain’s Isles of Scilly, 30 miles from England. Bishop has nothing but an uninhabited 160-ft (49-m) tall lighthouse, completed in 1858. The Rock has been the cause of many shipwrecks over the decades, including one wreck resulting in 2,000 deaths. The lighthouse’s last keepers left in 1992, and it has operated automatically since then. • One of America’s newest national parks is located 60 miles (96 kg) off the coast of southern California. Channel Islands National Park was named such in 1980, and is home to the largest accumulation of blue whales in the world. The last permanent lighthouse in the country was built on the archipelago’s 699-acre Anacapa Island in 1932. Continued on page 5

• Sitting in the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil is Marajό, the world’s largest island that is completely surrounded by fresh water. It’s about one-third the size of New York state, and compares in size to Switzerland. About 250,000 live on Marajό, which lies right on the equator. • The official name for a group, cluster, or collection of geographically-related islands is archipelago. Familiar archipelagos include the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, the Caymans, Indonesia, the British Isles, and the Philippines. The Philippines consist of more than 7,100 islands. Total land area is about the same as the state of Arizona, yet its population exceeds 97 million people. About 20 measurable earthquakes occur there daily. Over 170 individual languages are spoken in the Philippines.

Cat Q & A
Timothy G Brown, Agent
Dr. James Olson - The Meow Doc
Nature has given our domestic cats a fur coat that insulates from the cold and warm weather. Usually warm weather is less of a problem than cold weather unless you live in a desert with no shade or protection from the sun. The cold temperatures when combined with rain, wind, hail, sleet, and snow can be a huge challenge for survival. The wild cats in Colorado, the mountain lion and bobcat, have adapted well to harsh climate changes and the ability to hunt for food. Humans are the biggest threat to wildlife. With our domestic cats we can tilt the chance for survival in our cat’s favor by providing the basics – good food, fresh water, safe shelter, and love!

READER(S) of the WEEK!
Indoor cats are in the safest environment we can provide. They have HVAC on demand, abundant food, a safe comfortable sleep space, and humans to wait on their every need. Indoor/outdoor and outdoor cats, if given a safe haven to get out of the weather and have a good source of food and water, have the next best chance of survival. Most of these cats who want to hunt and roam are at risk. Feral cats live short hard lives. Shelter from the elements is a primary need to retain body heat – a barn with hay, a heated tack room, a garage or covered back porch with an insulated bed, or a cat door to get into a warm house will provide comfort for your cat. A refuge from coyotes and owls especially in cold weather when escape is difficult will enhance survival. Wild creatures need to eat and your cat is food. Some environments are cat friendly and others are not. Try to improve your cat’s chances to thrive. Cats can survive better than most humans in the wild but cold can kill. If your cat becomes hypothermic or gets frostbite – rewarm slowly and get your cat to an emergency hospital A.S.A.P. Most cat owners plan for the safety of their cats and can avoid seasonal risk factors. With the holiday season upon us we need to see that our cats/pets are not exposed to the extremes of weather, do not contact poisons like antifreeze, do not get into chocolate, string, decorations, or other holiday fare.

HEALTH CARE?
You may have heard that starting January 1, 2014, almost everyone will be required to have health insurance as a part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as health care reform. The law is designed to help more people get health care coverage. It also lays out certain requirements for all health plans.
How health care reform affects you
Made possible by:
PARKER TRAILERS ● 303-841-4910 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Because most current health insurance plans do not meet the requirements of the PPACA, you’ll need to choose an early renewal offer from your current carrier or choose a new ACA compliant health plan by December 15, 2013, or you will lose your current health coverage.

Federal financial assistance available Under health care reform, some individuals may qualify for financial assistance. Federal assistance is available only when you purchase a plan through Connect for Health Colorado, the Health Insurance Marketplace. From the mid-1700s until the late 1830s, Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island was the whaling capital of the world. About 150 whaling ships made port there during that time. Today this 47.8-sq-mile (124 sq. km) island is most famous today as a tourist destination. During the summer months the population swells from 10,000 to 50,000. Its home values are listed as among the highest in the U.S.
• Not every island is formed by natural forces. Japan’s Kansai International Airport is located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, a project that began in 1987. Rock and 48,000 concrete blocks form a seawall around the island, for which three mountains were excavated for the layer of earth over the sea floor. The airport opened in 1994. Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is in the midst of creating the Palm Islands, a chain of artificial islands shaped like palm trees, constructed from sand dredged from the bottom of the Persian Gulf. • An island that has formed on the surface of a coral reef is called a cay, while one that forms by deposits of sediment in a river is called an eyot. A small rocky island, usually too small for habitation, is known as a skerry.

Scott McQueen Coral gemstones come from some of the most beautiful miracles of Nature – the reefs, banks and atolls found in a variety of places around the world. Specially trained divers go into the ocean depths between three and 300 meters to carefully harvest coral. Once brought up the branches are cleaned, sorted and processed using saws, knives, files or drills. It is very seldom cut or ground on a wheel. In its raw form coral has a matt finish, but once it is polished it has a beautiful shine that looks marvelous in a variety of jewelry settings. The fewer the cracks, blotches, striations and holes, the higher the quality and the higher the price. Like pearls, corals are organic and are closely related chemically; both consist of more than 90 percent calcium carbonate. Corals come in a variety of colors: red, white, blue, brown and black. The most popular are the red hues of pale pink and salmon. Corals have a hardness of only 3.5 which makes them softer than any other gemstone material. If you wear a coral be careful with cosmetics, hot water or bright light. Keep your coral pieces clean with a soft, damp towel being careful not to scratch the surface.

• There are 6,852 islands in the nation of Japan. Its capital city Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world with a population of over 30 million people. There are 109 active volcanoes throughout the islands, more than any other country. Its location at the junction of four tectonic plates makes Japan vulnerable to powerful earthquakes and tsunamis. The March, 2011 earthquake, which registered 8.9 on the Richter scale, was the cause of nearly 16,000 deaths. Japan has a 100% literacy rate, one of the world’s highest life expectancies, and a remarkably low crime rate.

• Pearl attended a women’s college in Lynchburg, Virginia, then returned to China shortly afterward to care for her ailing mother. After marrying an agricultural economist, the Bucks held teaching positions at China’s Nanking University. • The couple welcomed a daughter, Carol, in 1921, who was a victim of Phenylketonura, or PKU, a genetic disorder that left her profoundly mentally challenged. Carol’s specialized care required large amounts of money, and the Bucks’ financial situation became so perilous that Pearl, a born storyteller, began writing to earn extra income. In the 1920s, she published essays and stories in several magazines. • Times were tense in China in the 1920s, and in 1927, she and her husband narrowly escaped a violent battle known as the Nanking Incident. They were rescued by American gunboats, and spent a year in Japan before moving back to a turbulent China.

THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Safer Holiday Lighting Q: Please remind your readers that when hanging up holiday lights outside, to be careful when setting up and working on ladders. A: That’s an important point to remember, and thank you for sending it. Setting up outdoor lights and displays can be hard work, and it’s easy to forget a few basic safety steps while hurrying to get strings connected and secured in place. Here are some things to remember: • Always check overhead before setting up ladders, using poles or other equipment, and make sure power lines, tree branches and other hazards are not in your path. • When planning outdoor displays, include the layout of extension cords and other electrical equipment in your design, so they are placed away from frequently traveled paths. • Use covered GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlets to reduce the risk of fire and shock, and be sure to not overload circuits. • Check all the light strings you plan to use, and make sure they’re rated for outdoor use, are not frayed and have no burnt bulbs. • Don’t work alone: Have a helper to brace the ladder, help unravel light strings and so on. • If you plan to place decorations on the rooftop, make sure you secure yourself with a safety harness and rope. HOME TIP: Consider replacing traditional Christmas lights with LED lights. They cost more, but last longer and save a lot of energy. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. 3rd Army, dies from injuries suffered not in battle, but in a freak car accident. He was 60 years old. Descended from a long line of military men, Patton graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1909. • On Dec. 22, 1956, a baby gorilla named Colo enters the world at the Columbus Zoo in Ohio, becoming the first-ever gorilla born in captivity. • On Dec. 16, 1960, two airliners collide over New York City, killing 134 people aboard the planes and on the ground. A miscalculation by the pilot of the United flight put his plane directly into the path of a TWA Super Constellation. Christmas presents carried by the planes’ passengers were strewn all over the streets. • On Dec. 20, 1989, the United States invades Panama in an attempt to overthrow military dictator Manuel Noriega, who had been indicted in the United States on drug-trafficking charges. Noriega’s Panamanian Defense Forces were promptly crushed.

When I began looking for a replacement job, I wanted to be my own boss, call my own hours, and have employees. Sounds crazy right? I wanted to have a REAL opportunity, not one where, I had to spend lots of money in startup fees and or a garage full of expensive inventory that resulted in and little real income. The opportunity had to be offering real products that produced REAL results, not just promises. The company needed to have a management team with extensive experience in relationship marketing; a company that builds strong teammates, with training and motivation to assist brand partners.
The company needed to be in a growth cycle, at their peak NOW and not years in the past. COMPUTER REPAIR TIPS: Nerium International meets all of these requirements and is making record sales of Nerium AD in their two Recovery and restore are two methods to put your years of business. The results are proven with third computer back into working condition software wise party testing and 100’s of before and after pictures of when you have a disaster. There are major differences real clients. between the two, and to add to the confusion there are different types of recoveries. The anti-aging industry is booming with $80 billion in the US alone, and expecting grow to $114 billion in 3 A system restore resets the operating system and soft- years. Nerium is offering ground oor opportunities in ware to a speciďŹ c point in time when the restore point this vast and expanding market. was created undoing any updates afterwards. It will not restore any deleted ďŹ le and may or may not undo Visit my website to check out this opportunity, or for a viruses. Restore points may be created automatically free trial of the product. No strings attached: by the operating system or applications, but to be on jonette.nerium.com or call Joan at 303-882-7626. the safe side it is good to create them manually prior to installing new programs or updates. Keep in mind Please see our ad on page 1 of Tidbits! that restore points take up space on your hard drive so Before After delete older ones to save drive space.
System recoveries come in two basic avors initial and ongoing. Because new computers may not come with system disks the initial recovery point should be created right after you purchase your computer. Doing this will enable you to roll the system back to its original factory condition in case you want to sell the machine or just want to wipe it clean to give it to someone. You will need to purchase some DVD's to do this and some computer manufacturers can be fussy about the brand of DVD you can use. Just search recovery disk creation and follow the directions remembering to label the disks as they are burned. The recovery points created down the road, also called disk images, should be made periodically and prior to installing new software or making major changes to the computer so you can put the computer back the way it was prior to the changes. A disk image creates an exact image of your hard drive: applications, data, malware, viruses, etc. in other words EVERYTHING. If disaster strikes and the hard drive crashes you can buy a new hard drive, load the disk image, and be on your way. To do this you will need to purchase an external hard drive with a capacity at least the size of the one on your computer. Free software is available on the web for doing this task. One more thing, there is a very nasty virus out there that encrypts all of your data ďŹ les. A good antivirus application should catch it and once its done its dirty work you have to pay to unencrypt your ďŹ le. Be careful opening emails and attachments from unknown sources, and disconnect your backup drive between backups. Brought to you by: Ted Coker Computer Repair 303-841-5690

LEGAL NOTICES Millions of Americans will not have to pay their full health insurance premiums in 2014. How much they'll have to pay depends on their income. Many low to moderate income individuals and families will qualify for a subsidy to assist in paying for their health insurance they obtain through their exchange. Here in Colorado, that exchange is Connect For Health Colorado. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that 48% of Americans who buy individual or family health insurance today would be eligible for subsidies. They would receive an average of $5,548, which would cover 66% of the price. Here's How You Qualify: Anyone earning up to 400% of the Federal Poverty Line ($15,000)will be eligible for a subsidy. That range is up to $45,960 for an individual and $94,200 for a family of four. The lower your income, the larger your subsidy. For instance, those making $17,235 a year will pay no more than 4% of income, or $57 a month, while those with incomes between $34,470 and $45,960 will pay a maximum of 9.5% of income, or $364 a month. The federal government will cover the rest. Anyone earning more than $45,960 would be responsible for the entire tab on the ObamaCare health plan of his/her choice. In addition to premium subsidies, those making less than 250% of the poverty line, or $28,725 for a single person and $58,875 for a family of four, are eligible for extra subsidies to defray out-of-pocket costs, such as deductibles and copayments. When signing up for Obamacare, enrollees can apply for an advanced subsidy by estimating their income. Payments go directly to the insurer. Their subsidy level is then adjusted once they file a tax return with their actual income for the year. In some cases they may have to repay some of the subsidy if they underestimated or get a refund if they thought they'd earn more than they actually did. Enrollees can also opt to pay the entire premium up front and get a refund at tax time. To learn more about whether you may or may not qualify for a subsidy, contact Don Meyer at Associates Health Group, LLC 303-794-9101 or djmeyer63@gmail.com Please see our ad on page 4 of Tidbits!

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver • It was American author Erica Jong who made the following sage observation: “Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn’t.” • Jon Bon Jovi is probably best known for his eponymous ‘80s hair band, but he’s also quite a philanthropist, working on behalf of organizations including the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity. In 2011, the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation opened a restaurant called JBJ Soul Kitchen, in which patrons pay only what they can afford, or can even volunteer in lieu of payment. • Those who study such things say that all mammals, from rodents to elephants, urinate for approximately 21 seconds. This now is known as the “Law of Urination.” • A poll conducted by Gallup determined that 42 percent of Americans believe that people are sometimes possessed by the devil. • Scientists unearthed frozen 30,000-year-old plant tissue from fossil squirrel burrows in northeaster Siberia. This would not be remarkable, except for what came next: Researchers thawed the seeds and planted them. The seeds germinated and grew, producing viable seeds of their own, making [SET ITAL]Silene stenophylla[END ITAL] the oldest viable multicellular living organisms. • If you die without any friends or family to attend your funeral, Amsterdam is apparently the place to do it. In that city, a civil servant will provide flowers and a poet will compose a eulogy in verse for those who would otherwise make an unaccompanied and unmourned final journey.

Reinvesting Dividends Can Be a Smart Move As an investor, you’ll eventually need to make all sorts of decisions — and some will be difficult. But there’s one choice you can make that can be relatively easy: reinvesting stock dividends. It’s simple to reinvest dividends — you just need to sign up for a dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP). Once you do, you won’t receive dividends directly as cash; instead, your dividends will be directly reinvested in the underlying equity. Be aware, though, that you may incur a fee when reinvesting dividends.
Cindy Rose
By doing some research, you can find companies that have not only consistently paid dividends year after year but also increased those dividend payments regularly. (Keep in mind that companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.)

By reinvesting dividends, you may be able to realize some key benefits. First, you’ll be building your share ownership, which can help you build wealth. No matter what the market is doing, adding shares can be beneficial — but may be especially valuable when the market is down. When share prices are low, reinvesting dividends — which don’t typically fluctuate with share price — can help boost your investment reach further, simply because each reinvested dividend can buy more shares than at the previous higher share price.
PALMER LAKE WELLNESS CENTER
While reinvesting your dividends clearly can be beneficial, you do have to be aware that, even if you aren’t receiving the dividends as cash, you will be taxed on them. But the dividend tax rate remains quite favorable — if you’re in the 25%, 28%, 33% or 35% brackets, your dividends will be taxed at 15%. If your taxable income is more than $400,000 (or $450,000 for couples), your dividend tax rate is 20%. If your adjusted gross income is $250,000 or more (for married couples filing jointly) or $200,000 or more (if you’re single), you’ll also have to pay a 3.8% Medicare tax on your dividends.

While taxes are a consideration when investing, they should never be the driving factor. Consider also that investing in dividend-paying stocks does carry some risk — specifically, the value of your investment may fluctuate, causing you to lose some, or all, of your principal. But you may be able to reduce the impact of this possible volatility by sticking with quality stocks as part of a diversified portfolio.

Consider this: It took investors 25 years to recover from the Crash of 1929 if they did not reinvest their dividends — but it only took them 15 years to recover from the crash if they did reinvest dividends, according to Ned Davis Research. And we’ve seen the same phenomenon in more recent years, too. Since 1987, according to Ned Davis Research, we’ve had three major market corrections: Black Monday in 1987; the bursting of the dot-com bubble from 2000 to 2002; and the bursting of the subprime and credit bubbles in 2008. The S&P 500 rose following those market corrections. Investors who stayed invested during those corrections had the opportunity to participate in rising markets. Those investors participating in a dividend reinvestment plan may have been able to buy more shares at a lower price. Of course, past performance doesn’t guarantee future results and the value of your stock shares can fluctuate, including the loss of principal.

A true Story from an Irish Sunday School Teacher. I was testing children in my Dublin Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. 'I asked them, ' If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?' 'NO!' the children answered. 'If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the garden, and kept everything tidy, would that get me into heaven?' Again, the answer was 'NO!' 'If I gave sweets to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into heaven?' Again, they all answered 'NO!' I was just bursting with pride for them. I continued, 'Then how can I get into heaven?' A little boy shouted out: 'YUV GOTTA BE DEAD.' Brings a tear to the eye, doesn't it?
