• Archaeologists general divide prehistoric eras into three ages – the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age – named such for the material used for making implements and weapons. During the Stone Age, stone was fashioned with a sharp edge or a point, with the oldest known stone tools excavated from several sites in what is now Ethiopia. The Stone Age is divided into three sub-eras, the Paleolithic era (early), roughly 70,000 to 20,000 B.C., the Mesolithic era (middle), 20,000 to 7000 B.C., and the Neolithic era (new), 7000 to 3000 B.C. The period of the Bronze Age is considered to be from 3000 to 1200 B.C., and ushered in the use of copper and tin with the alloy bronze in the manufacture of tools and weapons. The Iron Age occurred between 1200 and 600 B.C., when the harder and tougher iron replaced bronze. Cultural changes accompanied the difference in metal, as newer agricultural practices, religious beliefs, and

artistic styles evolved. Decorative designs on ornaments and pottery became prevalent. Blacksmiths were hammering items into shape, advancing away from the Bronze Age’s method of casting. • According to Greek mythology, there are several stages of human existence on Earth. During the Golden Age, the first race of mortals, dubbed the golden race (meaning good and noble), was created by the gods and held conversations with them. There was an endless abundance of food and no need for agriculture. This age was characterized by peace, harmony, and prosperity. The mortals lived to an old age while maintaining their youthful appearance, and eventually died very peaceful deaths. The Silver Age followed, with the mortals described as foolish and immature, who refused to worship the gods and goddesses. According to mythology, this so angered Zeus, he destroyed the silver race. The mortals of the mythological Bronze Age were hardened and tough, caught up in wars. This race was undone by their own violence. The Heroic Age was the period of heroes who fought at Troy. In the Iron Age, pain and evil ran rampant, with humans living in toil and misery, and with no shame over wrongdoing. • The period of European history from the 5th to the 15th centuries is referred to as the Middle Ages. It began after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the abdication of Romulus Augustus in the year 476. The early Middle Ages were called the Dark Ages, lasting until about 1000, during which time there was a drastic deterioration in cultural development and the economy, as well as an increase in wars. The part of the Middle Ages commonly known as the Medieval Period, began around 1000, and continued until the Renaissance began in the 16th century. Gothic art and architecture appeared during this era. •

The goal of the religious wars known as the Crusades during the Middle Ages was to restore the holy places in Jerusalem. Pope Urban II begged Catholic armies to go to war against Muslim forces in the Holy Land.

• The Age of Discovery started in the early 1400s and continued to the 1600s. Also called the Age of Exploration, it was the time when Europeans began travels in search of new sea trade routes to what they thought were the East Indies. The Portuguese and Spanish dominated the exploration – Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Balboa, Cortes, Ponce de Leon, and, of course, Columbus were the leaders of the more well-known voyages of discovery. • When the Earth undergoes a long-term reduction Continued on page 7

We live in a world full of microbes, pollens, parasites, insects, environmental poisons and whatever lurks outside your house. Even totally indoor pets are exposed to the outdoors by people bringing things home on their shoes, cloths and body. Knowing that your pets are constantly exposed these outdoor villains, it is wise to take precautions to prevent giving your pets diseases. The first example is potting soil and plants added to the great indoors. Contaminated soil with intestinal parasites has been reported in 20-25% of soil samples examined by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Cats playing in plant soil are exposed to roundworms, microbes, decaying plant material and toxic elements. Many plants can be toxic to humans and cats so know which plants can be poisonous. Walking in grass, crossing paths with a sneezing cat, stepping in dog or cat feces, picking up a flea or tick are just a few things that can happen throughout the day that you can bring home. If it often said by pet owners, my cat stays indoors and he does not need vaccinations, deworming, or other preventive medications – Wrong! Your cat can sometimes be at greater risk because it is assumed that there are no risks at all. Indoor cats don’t need vaccinations! Isolated humans and animals appear to be more susceptible to outbreaks of seasonal diseases because they are not exposed to small amounts of microbes every day in the environment. When high risk viruses become epidemic (flu/colds with humans or upper respiratory disease/feline distemper with cats) spreading to indoor populations can be a huge threat. Examples: Primates in zoos (apes, monkeys, lemurs, chimps, etc.) are isolated in cages or behind glass but when a human flu or cold epidemic strikes an area the zoo primates often get the diseases. People who cross paths with sick cats or where sick cats have been can bring that virus home on their shoes to give it to their indoor cat. Have you ever been checked out by your cat when you arrive home – the cat sniffing you coat, shoes and briefcase or purse. Wham – they are exposed! If you have concerns it is best to talk with our nurses at Cat Specialist to setup a good preventive health program for your cat(s). “An ounce of prevention is worth an pound of cure.” – Ben Franklin

There is an old Egyptian legend that says Tourmaline has a wide variety of colors because, as it made its way up from the center of the earth, it passed over a rainbow. In so doing, it took on all the colors of the rainbow. Indeed, if you like a variety of color in your gems, you will love Tourmaline. Even the name “Tourmaline” helps to define the gem as it comes from two Singhalese words “tura mali” which loosely translated means “stone with mixed colors.” There are Tourmaline gems from red to green and from blue to yellow. They often have two or more colors in a single stone. Some Tourmaline changes color when taken outdoors and then changes again when brought into artificial light. No two Tourmaline are exactly alike so you can probably find one to meet a variety of your personal needs or moods. The wide color spectrum of Tourmaline surpasses that of all other precious stones. In ancient times magical powers were attributed to this stone. Today it is considered the gemstone of passion and friendship. Some believe that if you give your beloved a Tourmaline that your love will be miraculously enduring.

Home Improvement THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta

It’s more than just plumbing. Safety. Security. Comfort.

EDITORS: If column runs long, cut fifth graph that begins “If you pick the ‘redo’ option, ...” Fitting New Tile Around Toilet Q: I need to replace some cracked and chipped tile in the bathroom. Some of it was shaped to fit around the base of the toilet. Is it difficult to shape replacement tiles in the same way? -- Sarah S., Fort Worth, Texas A: For first-timers, cutting ceramic tile to fit takes a bit of practice. At the home-improvement store, grab a few extra tiles of the same type as your replacement tiles, along with a tile cutter and a scoring tool. Practice cutting tiles in half, then in quarters, working to get a smooth break by first scoring along the cutting line (drawn with a pencil) across the top of the tile, then making the final cuts with the tile cutter. Next, practice cutting tiles to shape. For an arc, you may need to score deeper -- repeating along the cutting line a few times -- and then score down the middle of the arc before cutting. Working from a template can make things a bit easier. If the chipped tiles haven’t been removed, place as many of them back in place as possible. Trace the outline of the tile on a piece of paper, and use that trace as the template. If the tiles are too badly damaged, use as a template, mark the contours of the toilet pedestal base on a sheet of paper. Now let’s look at fixing the damage. Keep in mind that this repair works best if just a few tiles are damaged. If the damage is extensive, consider redoing the entire floor. If you pick the “redo” option, use the opportunity to look at how the toilet is set. In newer buildings, flooring is placed all the way up to the flange (the mouth of the wide drain pipe that the toilet base is set on) rather than cutting it to fit around the toilet base. If it’s practical, you may want your replacement floor to do the same thing. This would require removing the toilet and perhaps adding an extension to the flange so the toilet base fits securely on the newly raised floor, but it may be worth the extra effort. To replace the damaged tiles, tap a chisel gently along the edges to loosen the grout and then try to lift the tile. If it’s stuck, place the chisel edge in the center of the tile and tap it with a hammer until the tile cracks. Then, pry out the pieces, being careful not to mar the surrounding undamaged tiles. Once the damaged tiles are up, brush away the debris. This is a good time to inspect the underlayment (the flooring underneath the tile, often a plywood sheet) for water stains, swelling or other damage. Contact a flooring professional if you detect a problem. Replace the damaged tiles with new ones that closely match the old ones. (Take one of the removed tiles to the home-improvement store to match them.) Make sure to buy a few extra, in case your initial cutting efforts don’t work. Score and cut the new tiles to fit the spaces left by the old tiles. Working one tile at a time, coat the bottom with a thin layer of grout or tile adhesive. Press the tile into place, as close to the toilet base as possible. Once they’re set, apply grout generously to the spaces between each tile (about a 1/8 inch gap), using a wide putty knife to work in the tight area. Wipe away excess with a damp (not wet) cloth and let the tiles set for at least 24 hours. To finish, scrub tiles with a lint-free cloth, soap and water to remove the hazy layer of excess grout. Dry completely, then apply a thin bead of silicone caulk between the toilet base and the edges of the tiles.

IT’S BEEN AGES (continued): in surface and atmospheric temperatures, glaciers and ice sheets may expand. This is known as an ice age, or more accurately, a glacial age. Experts say there have been at least five major ice ages over the Earth’s history. They are probably the result of an interaction between very small changes in the Earth’s orbit, changes in ocean currents, and changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We can see the effects of glaciers across the continent – the Great Lakes and most of Minnesota’s and Wisconsin’s lakes were carved out by glaciers and filled up with melting water.

• The period between 1750 and 1850 was the Industrial Age, when dramatic advances in manufacturing, transportation, and technology produced powerful changes in the economy and culture. The introduction of steam power and improvements in mining created huge advancements. Manufacturing machines allowed mass production of goods. • The 1920s, commonly called the Roaring Twenties, was a time of economic prosperity and rapid industrial growth. Drastic social changes came along, including the growth of jazz music, which was so popular that the decade became known as the Jazz Age. The sounds of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and Benny Goodman dominated popular music. It was a time of breaking with tradition and turning toward modern technology. Young people took joy in shocking the older generation – women bobbed their hair and wore short skirts with silk stocking, taking on the nickname “Flappers.” The Jazz Age came tumbling down on October 29, 1929, with the crash of the stock market, ushering in the Great Depression. • We entered the Atomic Age when the first atomic bomb was detonated over Japan in 1945. The phrase Atomic Age was invented by a New York Times journalist named William Laurence, who was the official journalist for the U.S. Manhattan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapons. After witnessing the Japan bombings, he wrote a series of articles supporting the advantages of the new weapon. • Today we are part of the Information (or Digital) Age, characterized by our increases in technology and how we receive our information. We are also in the Social Age, which places more emphasis on people’s needs through various social networks.

• During the 17th and 18th centuries, the world moved into the Age of Enlightenment, a cultural movement promoted by the intellectuals of that time, such as Isaac Newton and Voltaire. They attempted to lead the world away from superstition, irrationality, and tyranny and toward knowledge through science and reason. It was based on faith in nature and belief in human progress, with hostility toward organized religion and monarchy. The “enlightened” believed that people were naturally good and would work to further the happiness of others.

Back to School Mouthguards ??

Q. What is a Mouthguard?

A. A mouthguard is a flexible appliance worn in athletic and recreational activities to protect teeth from injury Q. Why should I wear a mouthguard? A. Why NOT? According to the Academy of General Dentistry, “A mouthguard can prevent serious injuries such as broken teeth, jaw fractures, cerebral hemorrhage and neck injuries by helping to avoid situations where the lower jaw gets jammed into the upper jaw. Mouthguards are effective in moving soft tissue in the oral cavity away from the teeth, preventing laceration and bruising of the lips and cheeks, especially for those who wear orthodontic appliances. They may also reduce the severity and incidence of concussions”. A mouthguard can protect and conserve “what’s in your wallet” too. Q. Are “Back to School Mouthguards” important? Really important? A. Yes! Kids will be heading back to school very soon, and many will end up in various contact sports. According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation (NYSSF), every year there are 15 million dental injuries and 5 million teeth are lost to injuries. According to the American Dental Association, mouthguards help prevent over 200,000 high-school and college athletes from getting these injuries. Statistics from the NYSSF indicate that losing a single tooth can cost $10,000 to $20,000 over one’s lifetime to replace and restore that tooth! Q. Why don’t more students wear a mouthguard? A. Students may decide not to wear a mouthguard for a number of reasons: Not all schools Require wearing a mouthguard while participating in contact sports. Some that don’t fit properly, or are too big, can impair breathing (or feel like it). Cost may be a factor. Some kids just may “forget” to put their mouthguard in.

Can Investors Learn from Yoga Followers? It’s probably not on your

calendar, but World Yoga Day takes place on Feb. 24. As more people have discovered its healthful benefits, yoga has grown in popularity. But whether or not you practice yoga, you can apply its lessons to other areas of your life — such as investing. Specifically, consider the following yoga-related themes and how they might translate into investment habits that may be beneficial:

Balance — If you observe advanced yoga practitioners, you will be amazed at the balance they exhibit during certain positions. But for serious yoga students, the idea of “balance” goes beyond physical movements and extends to a concept of life that emphasizes, among other things, an avoidance of extremes. As an investor, you too need to avoid extremes, such as investing too aggressively, too conservatively or too sporadically. By building a balanced portfolio, and by investing regularly, you can help improve your chances of making progress toward your financial goals. Flexibility — Among its many benefits, yoga helps people increase their flexibility — and greater flexibility results in fewer injuries and an increased capacity to enjoy many physical activities. As an investor, you need to be flexible enough to adjust your portfolio as needed while still following a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your individual goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Relaxation — For yoga students, proper relaxation is essential to achieving mental equanimity, emotional balance and inner strength. But relaxation doesn’t always come easily — even experienced yoga practitioners need to work at it. As an investor, you also may need to train yourself to relax because, given the ups and downs of the market, it’s not hard to become overwrought and make ill-advised decisions based on short-term events. Staying calm and maintaining a long-term view of things may help you make better investment decisions. Positive thinking — Our own thoughts and actions are largely responsible for creating our happiness and success, according to yoga teachings. And positive thinking can play a key role in investing, too. For example, if you were to constantly look at negative headlines, you might conclude that it is pointless to invest for the future because external events — economic instability abroad, political squabbles at home, natural disasters and so on — will just disrupt your plans. Consequently, you might decide not to invest, or invest in such a way that can make progress toward your financial goals difficult. But if you maintain a positive attitude, you may be more inclined to invest wisely for your future. Visualization — In yoga, visualization is often used to reduce stress. At any given time, you might find it difficult to relax, but you can use your imagination to see yourself — and put yourself — in a relaxed state. As an investor, you need to visualize your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, before you can define a strategy to help you work toward them. By seeing yourself where you want to be, you’ll be motivated to take the actions necessary to work toward getting there. Try putting the principles of yoga to work — they may help you become a better investor. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor. PRAYERS INC. PO BOX 260182 LAKEWOOD CO 80226 WE WANT TO PRAY WITH YOU WWW.PRAYERS-INC.COM Stop Throwing Money Away On RENT You might be surprised that you can own your own home for what you pay in rent. But it’s true. Take a home priced at $225,000. With only 3.5% down, your total monthly payment including Principal, Interest, Taxes, and Insurance is only $1500. And that is figuring 3.5% interest rate for a 30 Yr. fixed loan. Thomas Waggoner, a professional Realtor and his team at Keller Williams Action Realty in Castle Rock, have been helping renters become first-time home buyers putting their money into their own home instead of their landlords home. This is all possible because of the low interest rates now available. However, those rates started creeping higher in January and February. You might want to buy your own home but have put it on hold because of that big down payment required which you just don’t have. Well hold on a moment. First of all on that $225,000 home we talked about, the down payment is only $7875 which still might be out of reach for some. Well there is HELP! In Douglas County, we have a down payment assistant program for first-time home buyers who qualify. For information call the Douglas County Housing Partnership at 303-784-7857 Some home buyers are not sure if their credit score is high enough to qualify for a home mortgage. That is where your professional Realtor can help you find a qualified mortgage lender that can help you improve your credit score and become eligible for a lower percentage loan. There is another benefit of owning your own home and that is the tax savings you will enjoy that you don’t have renting. Most of your payment for your mortgage is interest. That interest is deductable on your taxes putting more money in your pocket at the end of the year. Now you know how to stop throwing money away on rent.
